The countdown to 2024 and an eventful year Update from President David Newman By now, most of you will have read my recent words concerning the planned Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) in the first quarter of next year. It will be held to decide on the future direction of the club. I am hoping that many of you have had a look at “Options for The Future” a report which your Executive Committee have received and was released to you all in the 27 November newsletter. If you missed it, you can pick up a printed copy from reception or the bar. From what the finance committee has gleaned from records over the last 14 years, we have never made an operating profit except for the year when you get to add in the one-off sale of the land to Melia Developments. In other words, we have been funding operating deficits from cash reserves or borrowing for that long. No business or club can continue like this. That is why we have called an EGM early next year. The date will be confirmed very soon. Already, I have received positive comments and few emails, mostly about joining with another club, including again the possible option to join with the Orewa Surf Club and their new build. Melia Developments, which purchased and are developing our adjacent piece of land are interested in purchasing the balance of our site and may offer to lease it back until they are ready if we want to stay on a bit longer. My personal opinion is that we must do something soon. It looks to me like a move and amalgamation with another group may be a good choice. So far, this may be with the Orewa Surf Club and their new build. Just think, right on the beachfront. But nothing is certain until we have that EGM and for that meeting to give the Executive Committee direction for the future. The bottom line is we need to generate a positive cash flow or die. This means more use of our premises. Vini Rangihaeata-Stockman joined us in late 2022 and was made club manager in July the next year. She quickly showed her experience and skills as operations manager to get us both safe and compliant. I have complete faith that Page 4

Vini and her team are managing and operating our RSA in a very business-like manner. She was recruited by Mike Bishara, who was our manager from July 2022 until June 2023. He is now standing back from that role, and formally consulting for a couple of days a week until the end of the year. When Mike first swapped his committee

member role to become manager we were looking for experience to help us come out of the Covid years. He has managed through numerous compliance, safety, maintenance and repair projects and, with Vini, has produced the great team of staffers we now have. The success of our restaurant was built with support from Vini and chef Ronnie and the

The latest project is the completion of our new ventilation system, just in time for what promises to be long hot summer. It was essential to maintain our annual Building WOF as required by law for public buildings and an essential component to ensure our insurance policies remain in force. As we get ourselves in the festive spirit, don’t forget our Monster Raffle draw on Wednesday 13 December along with our Raffle Night. It is sure to be a great night. Tickets on sale at the bar for $3 apiece. The loads of prizes from barbeques to TVs, and plenty in between, are growing quickly and supported with donations from generous sponsors like Bunnings and PakNSave. Please support them as they have supported us over the year with donations of everything from food to paint and hardware.

A family affair, chef Ronnie and his partner Gabby keep our members well fed replacement of five poker machines which were more than two decades old was achieved with financing support from United Gaming. We have just had a kitchen inspection, and retained our A Grade certification for the next 18 months. That is no mean feat.

The last day of the club is Friday December 22 – pop in to raise a glass to 2024 with friends at happy hour prices. I will be on leave from 19 December and back for opening day on January 9. Vice president Bevan Edwards will be the Acting President in my absence. Have a safe and happy Christmas - New Year. David Newman President

Monster Christmas Raffle Prizes will be drawn on Members Night - Wednesday 13th December Tickets from the Bar $3 Each Page 5

Our multi-award winning classes will introduce you and your baby (or babies) to a wonderful world of sensory delights where you can relax, spend quality time with each other and enjoy meeting other new parents. Each class runs for 60 minutes and you’ll never experience the same class twice. Baby Sensory has been running at the Hibiscus Coast RSA every Tuesday since 2020 and we have had more than 400 local families joining us since then. WHAT IS BABY SENSORY? Baby Sensory has been specifically designed for babies from birth to 13 months, to aid your child’s development. The classes are filled with an incredible variety of sounds, smells, sights, textures, music, dance, singing and more. We take you and your baby on an exciting sensory journey during the 10 week term. Our activities are designed to open your baby’s world to the delights of massage, movement, visual stimulation, music, instruments, sign language, textures, puppet shows and so much more!

Every week is different, meaning you leave class each week armed with new songs and activities to help entertain your baby and support their development during your time together at home. Please visit our website (see below) to find your nearest class and join in the fun!

HOW OLD DOES MY BABY NEED TO BE TO START? Our classes are for babies aged 0-13 months. We recommend starting whenever you feel ready and comfortable for an outing with your baby. Our classes are just as much for you, as they are your baby! All you need to bring with you is a small blanket and your nappy bag. We take care of the rest.
