A brand new year and new challenges for your club Update from President David Newman You are reading this newsletter about a week after our Executive Committee meeting on 22 January; the first for 2024. As you know, Bevan was Acting President over the Christmas-New Year period because I was away in South Island. And as always, never a dull moment. We had a staff resignation over Christmas, which has resulted in us deciding to contract out our accounting side of things; plus, we have now saved costs in this area of operation. Basically, nothing has changed payment timingwise, just a re-think in the operations area, of how things are processed. Your committee again discussed finance and our inability to make a profit. You recall The Future Options report, released prior to Christmas. This is why we need direction from you, the members, on 25 February at the EGM. Your committee has had to break a further fixed deposit, to be able to operate and pay our bills. This cannot continue forever. One day we shall run out of funds. I don’t want that to occur.

open on Tuesdays is to reduce and change. Patronage is very low as is turnover, on Tuesdays. Turnover and profit pay our staff and services.

Wednesday Raffle Nights are becoming very So, it is basically a commercial reason, why a huge change with ‘where and how’ the HBCRSA popular with a gentle increase in attendance; that’s great. And nobody has won the members operates, must occur. draw for a while. Your committee is working on those options Being there, means you are in the draw as we see them, now. To me; we need to sell, move somewhere, smaller maybe, high visibility, and able to claim, but you must have that membership card and be financial. high pedestrian count and so on. On a positive note, entertainment costing has been reviewed and is continuing. But hours

Club reports Golf Club Seventeen golfers represented the Hibiscus Coast RSA on Sunday, 21 January at the RNZAF golf course in Whenuapai. It was a very hot, muggy day! The greens were quite fast and out of bounds pegs surrounded the course. Many balls were lost over to the runway where you are not allowed to cross past the boundary to retrieve them.

Auckland District RSA tournament trophy won by Onehunga RSA. Well done to HBCRSA in 2nd place Craig Burgess and Dave Bolton.

There were 94 golfers in the field and six Auckland RSA’s playing for the trophy. Our top four golfers for the day were Craig Burgess - with an incredible 48 Stablefords, Dave Bolton - 40 Stablefords, Paul Thompson and Bruce Forward - both with 36 points. This gave us a team total of 160 for Hibiscus Coast RSA. Lionel Lester deserves an honourable mention. He had a great game of golf and earned 47 Stablefords on his course handicap. Unfortunately for him, the tournament capped the handicaps at 36 so his Sableford score dropped considerably. Well done to all of these golfers who had a great round. Dave Bolton also won $100 for his closest to the pin shot on hole 13. Our team came second, behind Onehunga RSA with their total of 168. The four golfers from HBCRSA each received $50 for their win. Congratulations on coming second again - asthe winning RSA has to organise the following year’s tournament, 2nd place is just right.

Our next month’s tournament will be held at Wellsford with a 10am tee off. The cost is $40 which includes food afterwards. Carts will cost $35 - please book your own if you require one. The date Is 18 February. Please text Tex on 027 490 3274 to sign up. If anyone is interested in playing the National RSA golf tournament this year, it is being held in Napier from 2-6 November. https://www.hbcrsa.org.nz/ RSA Golf Committe

Women’s Section Our next meeting will be the AGM which will be held on 6 February 2024 (Waitangi Day) starting at 1pm. We look forward to seeing all of you at this meeting. A reminder that we will be hosting the Purple Poppy Day on 17 February 2024. This event remembers and honours the animals that have served (and still do serve) in war and conflict. It promises to be an entertaining and enjoyable day. Page 8

We know that this year, as in the past years, our monthly meetings will be great opportunities for our members to come together to have a chat with friends, to November be entertained withwinner a variety of Jacket speakers and musical talent,Wylde and to enjoy a Debbie lovely afternoon tea. Hopefully you can all come to the February meeting. Jennie Champion Secretary

Snooker The Snooker Club Christmas dinner was held at the RSA. The 19 members who attended had a great time and were impressed with the excellent standard of the meals. The Big Break Contest for 2023 was won by Charlie Lagor with a break of 54.(see photo on right) In our first week back in 2024 Colin Ross beat this with a break of 56 and the following week Charlie beat that with a 64 break!! The Snooker Handicap Pairs 2023 has finally been completed. Congratulations to Alan Wardle and Kayden Chea (see photo) who beat Dale Rowley and Tony Farr 4-1. The Snooker Handicap Singles final for 2023 will be played on 2 February. Snooker club nights will continue on Thursdays, starting at 6.45pm.

Newcomers are very welcome. John Perris

Club Captain

Indoor Bowls Happy New Year to you all. We ended our 2023 bowling year with a luncheon which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. THE PIG, which is a collection box taking 10c from any player who has the misfortune of either taking the kitty off the mat or bowling the incorrect bias during games over the year is tallied up and all bowlers had an opportunity to have a guess of the amount collected over that time. The bowler who is fortunate enough to guess the closest to its contents receives $10, This year it was Han. After a good break despite some very hot temperatures, it’s been great to start the New Year with high numbers of bowler’s keen to get back into it despite the heat, in fact a good number of players are staying behind after play to support the bar for a social cold bevy before heading home. To those few members we have not seen back yet whether it is struggling with the heat, are currently unwell or are fortunate enough to be still away on holidays we look forward to seeing you back soon. Page 9

To any new members of the HBCRSA we are a social club and if you are past bowlers wanting to pursue past interests in a social club or in fact never played and feel you might like to give it a go you are more than welcome to join us on a Tuesday (except first Tuesday of each month) and a Thursday names in by 12.30pm ready for a 12.45 start. If you would like more information feel free to contact Bob Hill (Club Captain) on 027 339 9683. We do ask if any bowler is only going to play 2 games on any day you make the committee aware before the draw is done on that day.

Indoor Bowls Cont’d Dates to remember: A reminder to all bowlers there will be no bowls on 6 February. The indoor bowls AGM will be held on Thursday 7 March at 12 noon. Please give some thought into whether you might like to join the committee. The board for names to be put up will be accessible on bowls

QUIZ HOUR with Alan Come along for something new - It’s Fun On Wednesday 7 February 4-5pm here at the Hibiscus Coast RSA, there will be something new for all of you. It is free and open to everyone. The first 30 minutes there will be an individual musical quiz, with the winner taking home a prize. You will be given pen and paper and you can mark your answers to 25 questions. This week will be songs from New Zealand, so good idea if you do your homework. The next 15 minutes will be a good old-fashioned singalong with “Going Bananas”. Rest assured you will certainly know the words to these home-town favourites. The final 15 minutes, DJ Alan will be taking your requests or you may want to have a little boogie on the dance floor. The restaurant will be open at 5pm with delicious meals at affordable prices, the raffles begin and then there will be the members draw at 6.30pm with $1600 up for grabs. Hope you can make it. It sounds like so much fun. Contact Alan Reeves 027 244 8714 for more information
