Dear Friends, As you may know, we choose a theme for each school year at Burr and Burton, a short and (hopefully) memorable phrase to keep all of us focused on what we can do every day to bring out our best. As l look back over the 2019‐20 school year, we could not have done better than to choose the theme “Honor the Effort.”

What a year of effort it turned out to be. When faced with a global pandemic, the Burr and Burton community responded with an outpouring of creativity, innovation, dedication, and generosity. Here are some examples: l In March, our teachers transitioned from in‐person to online classes in a mere 48 hours, carrying forward the momentum they had built throughout the school year.

To go from a fully in‐person school to an online school in a mere two days is nothing short of astounding. l Students had to make a similarly dizzying transition, and they not only succeeded in continuing their education, but produced online assemblies, pep videos, and even created an online production of Hair. l Rather than give up on Commencement, we conducted four days worth of graduation ceremonies, scheduling each senior for a walk up the path to the Seminary Building in cap and gown, accompanied by “Pomp and Circumstance,” for individualized diploma presentations. We also had a senior fire truck parade, and we capped off the festivities with an outdoor drive‐in ceremony at Bromley Mountain complete with a giant screen. l Throughout the spring, we continued preparing and delivering meals for low‐income students and families. We also opened up our kitchen to other organizations for food preparation since we know that hunger does not go into quarantine. l And, of course, donors from all across our community made all of this possible, rallying to help us provide opportunity and education for all no matter what.

Every year, we publish this Annual Appreciation Report, and every year, we are fortunate to have much to ap‐ preciate. This year is both the same and different. We are, as always, incredibly grateful for every gift acknowl‐ edged in the following pages, but we are perhaps even more mindful than ever that each monetary gift enables the Burr and Burton team to do what it does so well: invest time, care, and attention in our students.

To all who support Burr and Burton’s mission—whether through gifts to the Annual Fund, capital projects, specific programs, the endowment, The Gala, or through incalculable gifts of labor and love—thank you. We are truly honored by your effort on behalf of our students.

Dear Burr and Burton Community, Home is a place where they take you in and care for you no matter the circumstances. It is a place of love, safety, and security. That is what Burr and Burton has been to generations of students, through everyday difficulties and extraordinary challenges—a home full of encouragement, support, and dedication.

When the coronavirus hit last March, Burr and Burton was forced to close its doors for the first time since the flu pandemic in 1918. But because of an in‐ credibly caring and competent staff, we were offering online education two days later. That is a remarkable feat that asked so much of our faculty and staff, our students, our families, and, really, the entire Burr and Burton community. Being there for our students so quickly was an act of love and commitment.

Three months later, after a lot of thought and preparation, we were able to offer seniors something at least close to the graduation they deserved. From a parade through town and individual diploma cere‐ monies to a drive‐in Commencement in Bromley’s parking lot, their achievement was recognized and they knew the school community cared.

Now, Burr and Burton is open for this school year. An entire summer of hard work and preparation by faculty and staff is producing an in‐person school experience. It may look deceptively easy, but the preparation and continued hard work to make it possible speaks volumes about Burr and Burton Academy.

In the meantime, our generous community has continued to support the school financially as it al‐ ways has. This generosity makes it possible to meet our mission and is, in many ways, a thank you for the extraordinary commitment of our faculty, staff, families, and friends. Thank you for that support. It cre‐ ates a wind at the back of so many people pulling in the same direction.

Because I am stepping down from the Board, this will be my last time to look back at the achieve‐ ments of the prior year in my capacity as Chair. This is a bittersweet moment; Burr and Burton was a home for me as a student, but it has also been a home for me for the last nineteen years. I know that many would agree that those of us who love and support BBA receive far more than we give. Burr and Burton will always be in my heart and, as for thousands of others, will always be home.

A RTS BBA engages nearly every student each year in the process of critical thinking and creative exploration through the study of music, dance, drama, visual art, and media arts. We are proud to provide one of the most diverse and progressive sets of course offerings available at the high school level.

ATHLETICS Education‐based athletics is a powerful learning opportunity, marrying the practice of collaboration, perseverance, and reflection with the highest standards of performance and behavior. Our robust selection of teams and sports offers every student the chance to compete and achieve.

E XPERIENCE On and off the main campus, Burr and Burton students engage in place‐based education, whether based in the shadow of Mt. Equinox, in the fields at the BBA‐Dene Farm, in the woods at the Mountain Campus, or in opportunities ranging from internships to international travel. Generous private support keeps those experiences accessible to all.

The Burr and Burton endowment is a long‐term investment both in the school and its mission and in the specific programs and components supported by individual funds. Whereas current use support is spent in a given academic year, an endowment gift is invested, and only a portion of the income is spent, creating an enduring source of financial stability to serve future BBA students.

Named endowed funds may be established with a minimum gift of $25,000; gifts of all sizes may be made to the general endowment or to existing funds.

Unusually, Burr and Burton’s endowed scholar‐ ship funds, marked below with an asterisk, do not support scholarships to Burr and Burton, but to colleges and are awarded to graduating seniors annually at Scholarship Awards Night.

C HARBONNEAU TOURNAMENT The Manchester Country Club hosted twenty foursomes for the annual Jeffrey Charbonneau Memorial Golf Tournament.
