Il team che lavora al Design Center Ducati è una fantastica Babele culturale che mette insieme junior e senior designer di ogni parte del mondo, che sebbene svolgono gran parte del lavoro individualmente, sono accomunati da un unico obiettivo: dare vita a moto che abbiano un design tipicamente italiano. In Ducati, quando si parla di italianità, si fa riferimento a due caratteristiche. La prima si può riassumere nel binomio essenzialità e pulizia: sulle moto c’è solo 38

The team working at the Ducati Design Center is a fantastic cultural blend that brings together juniors and senior designers from all over the world; while much of their work

is individual, they share a common goal: to breathe life into Italian motorcycles of outstanding design. At Ducati, when we speak about ‘being Italian’, we have two characteristics in mind. The first can be summed up with the words ‘clean and essential’: the motorcycle should only have what it needs (anything superfluous is abandoned, so no frills, just clean lines). The second is compactness, in terms of both dimensions and the overall impression. A culture of beauty, then, based on elements that are of simple form, built with attention to detail and of outstanding quality. With the approval of the final draft comes a second stage that sees the making of a “Pre-Clay” 1:1 scale model, allowing us

The next stage, borrowed from the world of cars, is the clay model, which undergoes continuous manual modifications. It’s like witnessing a team of sculptors: once their work has been completed they deliver an object to be optically scanned. The wizards of virtual modelling (CAS) and mechanical design (CAD) then transform this into a set of threedimensional files. As the project progresses prototypes are built and tested to assess reliability and appeal with potential customers. At this point the motorcycle is a living, roaring reality. And the guys from the Design Center regularly go to the experimental department and look at it yearningly, remembering those 1000 days of drawings, dreams and discussions that magically ended the best way possible: as another unmistakeable Ducati. Even though the road towards production is still a long one…

All’interno della storica fabbrica Ducati di Borgo Panigale è attivo un laboratorio didattico interattivo di fisica interamente dedicato agli studenti delle scuole medie superiori realizzato in collaborazione con il Liceo Malpighi di Bologna. Qui (dove è stato realizzato il servizio moda Kids “I will be a Ducati Rider”) è possibile sperimentare, grazie ad alcuni macchinari interattivi appositamente progettati e realizzati, la concretezza dei principi fisici studiati a scuola e il legame tra questi e la progettazione di una Ducati da competizione. I professori di fisica di tutte le scuole medie superiori possono chiedere di utilizzare il laboratorio prenotando la visita sul sito Ducati.
Physics is nature’s art. A branch of science that, through the observation of reality, describes how certain natural processes occur. Ducati’s historical production plant in Borgo Panigale, Bologna, is home to an interactive physics lab wholly dedicated to secondary school students; the lab was established in collaboration with the Malpighi Institute of Bologna. Here (where the “I will be a Ducati Rider” fashion shoot was done), several specially built interactive machines allow students to experience the practical application of the physics principles studied at school and so understand the link between them and the design of a racing Ducati.
