Becoming better at the end than they were at the beginning of the season was one of Millard South Softball’s goals, along with winning a state championship. As the team can now claim the program’s 6th state title, five of these being within the last 6 years, it is safe to say they achieved their goal. “I expected ups and downs from the season, but I wanted us to be better at the end than we were at the beginning.” said Steve Kerkman. Millard South was ranked number 6 going into state and their first game was against Kearney ranked number 3. However, the Patriots proved rankings didn’t matter, as they won the first game 12-4, run ruling Kearney and sending them to the losers bracket. Centerfielder, Rylie Unzicker, robbed a home run by making the catch while flipping over the centerfield fence to end the game early with a run rule. Marian was the next team in the way of Millard South’s main goal. The offense jumped on Marian early in the game putting multiple runs on the board. Marian fought back but couldn’t catch up to the Patriots. Another win for Millard South 14-6, advanced the team with 2 wins on to day two of the state tournament and guaranteed them at least one game on championship Friday as the tournament was double elimination. Millard South would now face Papio. Papillion La-Vista put two runs up on

the board early in the game but a grand slam by junior right fielder Peyton Glatter towards the middle of the game put 4 runs on the board for Millard South. The rest of the game remained scoreless for both teams giving Millard South the 4-2 win. The Patriots also earned themselves a spot in the Championship game. Early in the day Friday, Papio and Millard North battled to see who would play Millard South in the final. Papillion won the game and turned right back around to play the undefeated Millard South team. The Patriots scored first in the game, but had many defensive errors allowing Papio to jump ahead. Papillion took the win in this game but they had to beat Millard South twice for the state title. The next game would be Papios third game of the day. “We have been preparing for this moment all year. We are going to need ten runs to win this thing,” Kerkman told his team. In the second Championship game, Payton Huscroft started the Patriots off with a two run homerun giving the team confidence to keep scoring. Papio also scored and was ahead of Millard South until the following inning when the Patriots scored 6 more runs. Millard South played the full seven innings without any defensive mistakes and had twelve hits and a homerun from Taelar Solano. Taking the final win of the season 11-9, Millard South took their 6th state championship title back to Omaha. The team finished their season with 29 wins and 7 losses, but most importantly, state champions.
