from the desk OF SHARI BLINDT Dear friends, The power of hope perseveres despite the pandemic! Its power has never been more apparent than during 2020 and 2021 as we all navigate these uncharted waters of the pandemic in Guatemala, here at home, and across the world. 2020 was a challenging year, but Common Hope was able to continue serving our families in innovative and creative ways. Our staff and families came together as a community and quickly identified the primary needs to be addressed: food insecurity, connectivity, education support, and health care. We immediately transitioned both our Health Care and Social Work programs to tele-services, ensuring that families were connected to the resources they needed most. As schools, businesses, and transportation came to a close, our Education teams found ways to support students in their learning, even from a distance. We were able to build 14 homes in 2020 during first quarter, and by the end of 2020 had resumed service hours with safe protocols so families could continue to move themselves forward. We were unable to continue teacher training programs due to Ministry of Education limitations, but did remain in contact with schools to determine the resources our students would need to be as successful as possible with their distance learning.

Our students have not learned everything they would have hoped to during these two school years, and we will address learning loss in the coming years. We will continue to come together as a community to overcome the challenges created by this pandemic. Covid cases continue to be on the rise and vaccines are just beginning to be available in Guatemala. Keeping families, staff, and visitors safe and healthy is our utmost priority. Common Hope ended the year on strong financial footing in 2020. The generous response from each of you, in support of programmatic pivots to continue serving families through the primary needs our social workers identified, reassured our families that we would continue to be there for them despite the pandemic. In addition, Common Hope qualified for a fully forgiven PPP Loan, and combined with your generous gifts it allowed us to continue delivering our mission throughout the year. As always, we strive to continuously improve our programs and to use our resources wisely. Overall we served 3,155 students and their siblings in education in 2020, and with their families served in total more than 9,000 moms, dads, and children living in 27 villages in the Central Highlands of Guatemala. There is still much to celebrate, despite the challenges we face today. In this, our 35th anniversary year, we celebrate 214 high school graduates, who are the agents of change for future generations to come. More than 500 6th graders have completed their education at New Hope School in the past 15 years, and they are well on their way to completing their goal of high school graduation. The power of hope is real—and it is through your generosity that it’s ignited for the students and families we serve.

A STORY OF Perseverance short-term needs were met— bedding, clothing, school supplies, backpacks, dishes, hygiene necessities, and food. A short time later, the family moved into a new home built in tandem with a Common Hope Vision Team and the housing staff, pictured below.

Doña Gregoria Yool dreamed of a beautiful future for her children, a future that did not include the hard labor of working in the coffee fields—a life she knew all too well. In 2006, she and her husband reported a monthly income of $119 per month. They lived in a one bedroom home with dirt floors and cornstalk walls, had three children, and worked long days picking coffee. She learned of Common Hope that summer. Applied. Qualified. And, the Yool family began the partnership. Her son, Jose, was born with spina abifida. A condition not well attended to in Guatemala—where access to healthcare is limited at best. Thanks to Common Hope’s comprehensive approach, Doña Gregoria’s dream to get her children out of the fields was in motion. This supportive, “wrap-around” programming accompanies a family so that they can sustain their commitment to education. Seeing a child to graduation is a journey of many years and requires much more than a tuition payment and school bags of supplies.

Yool family pictured with vision team volunteers Seventh grade is a critical time in the life of a child anywhere in the world; in Guatemala, this transitional year is particularly difficult. Not only is school work getting harder and requiring more effort, but it is also a time when many young men leave school and go to work to help support family income. It is the time when the majority of their fathers stopped going to school. Jose, too, struggled in seventh grade. He joined Common Hope’s tutoring and homework support program and that helped propel him into his next years. Between educational support programs and a social worker guiding the way, Jose did not give up. And, guess what? Jose is on track to graduate this November despite the pandemic. Building a better Guatemala one child, one family at a time. ¡Felicidades! Welcome to the Class of 2021, Jose!

The Yools now had resources to address Jose’s condition and to support his academic achievement for the long haul. Plus, Jose had a sponsor, an advocate for a bright future. Seven years into their partnership, Jose and his siblings were continuing in school, when, just after Christmas, the family was working in the fields and a fire engulfed their home. Everything inside was burned. Common Hope was there. Within days, the family received 10 sheets of corrugated metal and all that they needed for a temporary shelter. Common Hope made sure their 3

the power of hope during a pandemic There was no such thing as “business as usual” in 2020. Covid-19 interrupted operations and life in ways that could never have been imagined. Guatemala went into a lockdown and nothing was left untouched by the impact of the pandemic. But, HOPE prevailed. The resilience of Common Hope families was ever more apparent. Families and Common Hope partnered, pivoted, and adapted. Common Hope developed a crisis response plan that focused on four core needs defined below. This work continues.

education support

CONNECTIVITY

Upon the close of schools, Common Hope pivoted to support at-home learning needs following the requirements of each child’s school. Two education kits were delivered to students, a Homework Hotline was managed by Education Support Staff, and the education team developed “Chispudos” or Sparks, an innovative strategy to connect with primary school students via Facebook.

Immediately it became clear that communication would be key in order to check-in with families during lockdown. Social workers conducted a series of interviews with every family to check in on their health, safety, emotional well-being, work status, food security and more. Many families do not have internet access or a computer in their home, so prepaid mobile internet and calling plans were provided.

Health care Health care is a priority in the midst of a pandemic. Any families that had health needs were referred to the Common Hope telemedicine line attended by the clinic doctor or Emotional Support Hotline in order to receive support from a staff psychologist. Clinic staff also developed a system and permission from the Ministry of Health to deliver medication for patients with chronic illness. Established telemedicine capability in Antigua; provided 2,082 telemedicine consults 7,417 medications were distributed to those with chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension Psychology staff fielded 349 calls to the Emotional Support Hotline

food security Food insecurity emerged as a core challenge for Common Hope families. Common Hope began delivering food including eggs, beans, rice, and nutritional supplements. Additionally, all families received seeds to plant their own gardens with radishes, carrots, and spinach. These vegetables have a high nutritional value and they can grow and be harvested very quickly. 5,803 Hope Kits for food relief delivered to families 300 pounds of seeds were distributed, enough to cover 37 American football fields! All 1,656 families received seeds to plant small gardens 866 families facing food insecurity received additional nutritional support

the power of community Celebrating 20 years at New Hope The New Hope community is celebrating two milestone anniversaries this year! Truly a celebration of el poder de la comunidad – the power of community! It was 1999 when the people of Guatemala survived a different disaster than the pandemic they’re facing today— Hurricane Mitch. After the hurricane, Common Hope supporters wanted to help families who had lost everything to mudslides in the ravines outside of Guatemala City. And they did. Today, 42 families call New Hope Village home, and New Hope Primary School serves nearly 280 children every year, preschool through 6th grade. Today, children from the neighboring villages of Tres Sabanes, el Durazno, and San Martin also attend New Hope school, growing the impact of Common Hope’s reach. The creation of New Hope village began as a relocation project 20 years ago. A community where families would become homeowners and neighbors naturally evolved into a place where education was the central focus, and where students now graduate with their high school degree at four times the national average. This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of making hope real for the original students and their families who bravely committed to partnering with John Huebsch and Renato Westby to create this new community. In addition, New Hope Primary School is celebrating its 15th anniversary and has seen 496 students graduate from 6th grade in that time! Today all 42 families have earned deed to their land and the title to their home. Their children are grown and have families of their own. At the community’s 20th anniversary celebration in June, Renato was reunited with many former students and was able to catch up with them.

He was struck by the positive impact New Hope has had on that first generation of students. “It is amazing to see the first kids who attended New Hope School. Today they are adults with kids of their own.” While not everyone had achieved graduation, the vast majority of them shared their success stories that night. Today they are mechanics, engineers, psychologists, small business owners, accountants, and more. These young adults are much more optimistic about their future, whereas 20 years ago, their parents were simply surviving day-to-day. “The biggest difference between the stories of these graduates and their parents 20 years ago was so clear… they had choices and opportunities. They can choose where to live, they can choose where to send their kids to school. Last Saturday I saw firsthand how DIPLOMAS truly made the difference for the students we serve,” Renato remarked. Over the past 15 years, New Hope School has celebrated 341 high school graduates. In celebration of this anniversary, a Pathway of Dreams will be installed to commemorate each graduate. The pathway is recognition and inspiration, achievement and motivation for all to be agents of change in their community. Looking to the next 35 years, Common Hope plans to continue to engage the surrounding communities in its mission, meeting the greatest needs as defined by the communities themselves. Together we are working to make high school graduation the norm and develop agents of change that can support their own communities’ growth so that poverty is a problem of the past.

Common Hope wants to recognize these lead donors that had the leadership, foresight, and passion to help start a new community and school to serve families in need. Common Hope extends its gratitude to ALL donors to New Hope past and present.

Hope after a hurricane It was 1999 when Hurricane Mitch passed through Guatemala. At the time, Marvin and Yenedi Bravo Morales lived in the ravines of Guatemala. Covered, thick, wet areas with dense foliage, the ravines are hidden entities that give way to landfills that become residences; informal “housing” where gangs, violence, and the city’s poorest reside. A hard place to be. Even before Hurricane Mitch, Marvin and Yenedi were trying to find a way to a better life. Then the hurricane struck and they lost everything. The immediate need was housing. Enter Common Hope. The heartache of a hurricane would bring them the opportunity of a lifetime. Yenedi and Marvin and their baby on the way became two of New Hope’s first residents. Theirs is a story that demonstrates the power of Common Hope’s comprehensive approach. A house was one part of a bigger story. Neither Marvin or Yenedi graduated from high school. Education was a goal, not a given. Together Yenedi and Marvin built their home. Initial residents of New Hope didn’t have it easy—the location was remote and transport was difficult. A lack of water and electricity for the initial homes in the development meant hardship. But they were ready—and they were ok with the challenges. They were thrilled to be part of the Common Hope community, a community that would support their efforts to get their children through school and end the cycle of poverty they had always known. Their second child, Marvin Jr., was born with a rare condition that prevented him from walking. Thanks to Common Hope, Marvin was able to access therapy and the health care he needed. Marvin went on to graduate second in his class as a mechanic in 2020. Yenedi and Marvin Sr. credit Common Hope with their family’s happiness. Common Hope credits the Bravo Morales family for taking opportunity and hope and putting it to work for them. Their story is a perfect story of partnership and the power of hope. Their third child, Anderson, is a sophomore in high school. Their oldest, Dayana, is attending University and works as a secretary at a clinic in the city. Marvin Sr. is a mechanic and Yenedi serves on the community council at New Hope. It’s true. Yenedi and Marvin represent A Better Guatemala. Common Hope’s comprehensive approach mattered. And, together, we are building a better Guatemala. One child. One family. One community at a time.

As Guatemala, along with the rest of the world, continues to battle the pandemic, our priority has been and will always be supporting students on their journey towards high school graduation. The effects of the pandemic will continue to emerge and we are prepared to identify and address those that create challenges for our students to stay in school. Studies already anticipate significant learning loss among students in Latin America and other developing countries. Common Hope will address the emerging education crisis while also expanding reach to more students and growing programs to meet critical needs. It requires balance when growing and maintaining, innovating and creating. Common Hope’s mission to provide hope and opportunity and help entire families has never been more important.

reaching more students Growth is a constant in the Common Hope story and in conversation. Discussions around how to make the most of resources address scope, breadth, and depth of programming to ensure families, children, schools, communities achieve long-term success. In 20222025, Common Hope will welcome more students to the Common Hope familia.

updating facilities Managing the upkeep of a facility built over 30 years ago is no small feat. Ensuring safe water is a priority for the existing sites in Antigua and New Hope. Renovating spaces to accommodate new initiatives (when we started we didn’t even have computers) will ensure the spaces support the needs of the four core pillars: family development, education, housing and healthcare. And, finding ways to incorporate additional learning and practical experiences on campus is an initiative of the future.

growing programs Considering programming for the future is important to address trends and learnings. Considering programming in the face of a pandemic is critical. Understanding the impact of remote learning and leveraging the pivots to better serve students requires innovation and evaluation. “Traditional” programs are on the move and technology, dignified housing, and personal, customized educational support will grow in the future.

monitoring & evaluation Understanding learning loss will be paramount in Common Hope’s future. Dedicating space in the day-to-day to evaluating innovation and the impact of distance and hybrid classroom settings will determine how students and families consider and value education. Common Hope is committed to know what is pushing the lever in making up lost educational ground and keeping students in school.
