This year we celebrate not only the accomplishments of the children and families we serve, but also the impact made possible when we come together to make a difference. Together we are the Common Hope family children and their parents in Guatemala, staff, volunteers, and you—our sponsors, partners, donors, and vision team members. We value education, hope and opportunity, and are willing to put our ideals into action to fight poverty with diplomas.

In 2018 another 160 students graduated high school, bringing our total number of graduates to more than 2,400. Their graduation makes it possible for their families to no longer live in poverty, as demonstrated in our updated long term impact study. Through your generosity, parents can build a better life for their family than the one they know today, commit to an education for their children that they didn’t have themselves, and believe that their grandchildren will never know the hardships of living in poverty.

Over the past 25 years our Antigua Family Development Center was built and lovingly used by thousands of children and families partnering with us. In 2018 we invested in much needed improvements, including a clinic/pharmacy renovation to better serve our families’ health needs, centralization of our education and psychology support programs, and a refresh of the Visitor Experience houses to provide greater context for the culture and geography of Guatemala for visitors. We explored innovations for our housing program and have implemented the use of glass windows and translucent roof panels in the homes we build, folding bunk beds for families to optimize space in small homes, and retaining walls for homes in precarious positions.

Every day our social workers, teachers, youth leaders, and the rest of our team delivered on their commitment to the children and families we serve.

In June of 2018, the Volcano Fuego erupted with devastating effect near our Antigua site. While our partner families were not directly affected, there were thousands of people nearby who lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. We received more than $40,000 in relief donations, and investments were made to assist both in the immediate aftermath and for longer term relief for those directly affected. We worked in collaboration with a number of other organizations to ensure that immediate needs were met for the municipalities directly impacted, that temporary shelters for families had water and psychological support, and helped build permanent homes for families where possible.

Common Hope ended the year on strong financial footing again in 2018. Revenues returned to normal growth following a significant bequest gift received in 2017, and we again utilized a portion of this gift for strategic investments.

Your impact changes the future for more than 14,000 moms, dads, brothers and sisters in Guatemala, and we are incredibly grateful for your continued investment in this life-changing work.

The opportunity to travel to Guatemala and experience our programs firsthand is how we share our mission. Now, new options that include a Vision Team Junior experience are a great way for younger students or families to volunteer and experience the culture and life of our families. In 2018, 25 teams traveled to Guatemala with Common Hope.

ONE-DAY EXPERIENCES

Step off the tourist trail. Common Hope now offers a One-Day Experience for those visiting Antigua who are interested in stepping off the tourist trail and taking a deep dive into Guatemala culture and volunteerism. Our free Pueblo Tour is offered on Mondays and Thursdays for a brief tour of a village and our Family Development Center.

This year, we are celebrating partners who have joined our mission to share hope and opportunity in their community and in Guatemala. In total, 29 partners are sharing the good work and the incredible power of working together.
