IN PREPARATION FOR YOM TOV...

CARBON MONOXIDE IS SILENT,ODORLESS, Deadly

• Check that you have working carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

• It is recommended that every home have at least one UL-listed carbon monoxide alarm near all sleeping areas and outside individual bedrooms.

• Extreme caution should be used with gas ovens that are left on for long periods of time (ie Shabbos, Y”T). Carbon monoxide can climb to dangerously high levels in a very short time.

• Being that on Shabbos and YT gas ovens tend to be left on for extended periods of time, be sure to leave a couple of windows open.

• If multiple members of your family are experiencing the following symptoms: lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea and the like, IMMEDIATELY get to fresh air and seek medical attention!

Wishing everyone a healthy sweet new year!

KASHRUS ALERTS by Rabbi Beryl Broyde

by Rabbi Beryl Broyde

A Service of the COR of Greater Detroit

THE FOLLOWING NEW SODAS are Kosher-pareve (no symbol required):

 VERNORS BOSTON COOLER Limited Edition

 MOUNTAIN DEW INFINITE SWIRL

Rabbi Beryl Broyde Kashruth Product Helpline 248-559-5005 x103 cor@cordetroit.com www.cordetroit.com

THE FOLLOWING NEW SLURPEE SYRUPS [FCB] and FOUNTAIN DRINK are Kosher and pareve (no symbol required except where noted). The label on the syrup box in the back of the 7-Eleven store should be checked to verify the brand and flavor, unless that particular store has store level Kashrus certification of its Slurpee machine(s):

 MOUNTAIN DEW INFINITE SWIRL FCB Limited Edition

 FANTA ZERO SUGAR DELICIOUS HIBISCUS & BERRY FCB

 NERDS STRAWBERRY FCB with HKA symbol

 POWERADE XTRA SOUR GRAPE SHOCKER FCB

 POWERADE GRAPE BLITZ Fountain Drink

7-ELEVEN SLURPEES at 13 Mile & Greenfield are no longer certified by the K-COR / Vaad Harabbonim. 7-Eleven Slurpees at Lincoln & Greenfield [all three machines] and 11 Mile & Coolidge [only the left machine] remain certified. ICED COFFEES at Lincoln & Greenfield [Mocha Latte and French Vanilla Latte] are certified Dairy, not Cholov Yisroel.

DAVE’S SWEET TOOTH TOFFEE is no longer certified by the K-COR / Vaad Harabbonim and is not acceptable even when bearing the Council’s K-COR symbol, due to Kashrus violations. Corrective action is being implemented.

BIGGBY COFFEE in Lathrup Village is a non-Kosher establishment, as are all Biggby locations. No products or equipment can be considered Kosher except for products in their original sealed packaging bearing a reliable certification.

SKITTLES CANDIES: At this time, some - not all - Skittles ca ndies are certified Kosher pareve even without the OU symbol. To determine the status of a package, look at the ink-jetted code on the back. If the second line contains the letters WAC in the 6th, 7th and 8th digits, and the Best Before date is June 2026 or later; or if the second line contains the letters YRV, regardless of date, then it is OU certified. Eventually, the OU symbol will appear on the packaging. - Note that Skittles Gummies and Skittles Pop’d candies are not certified.

ZWEET CANDIES/Galil Brands: Not all Zweet candies are Kosher. Some varieties, including Insanely Sour Belts in Strawberry and Rainbow flavors, Pumpkin candy, and possibly others, are not Kosher and bear no Kosher marking. Some varieties, including Gummies Vampire Teeth, are available in both Kosher and non-Kosher versions, and have been found mixed in the same bin in stores. Carefully check the back label of every package for the Kosher marking. As a further assurance, check the ink-jetted code on the package - the second line should begin with BDMC = Beth Din Minchas Chinuch.

TROLLI GUMMI POPS are no longer OU certified, and new packages do not bear the OU-D symbol. Packages still bearing the OU-D are certified. Check each package.

BEECH-NUT BABY FOODS are no longer OU certified, and do not bear the OU symbol. Older jars still bearing the OU are certified.

BASE CULTURE BREADS are no longer certified Kosher. Images on some websites, e.g. Amazon and Whole Foods, mistakenly still show the OU symbol.

CREPINI EGG WRAPS: Due to operational changes, new production of Crepini Egg Wraps is no longer Kof-K certified and will not bear the KofK symbol. Product currently in stores with the Kof-K symbol was produced before this change and is certified, and will bear a Lot Code of 300630 or lower.

IDAHOAN “ORIGINAL MASHED POTATOES” does not bear an OU symbol on new boxes due to a printing error, but is still certified OU Pareve.

TRADER JOE’S ORGANIC FRENCH ROLLS and TRADER JOE’S ORGANIC FRENCH BAGUETTE that bear the MK symbol [Montreal] are both still Pas Yisroel. There has been no change.

KRONOS PITA with lot codes 5160 and 5167 are not Pas Yisroel despite the cRc / Pas Yisroel labeling on the packaging, due to an oven maintenance issue.

Various types of SPECIALLY SELECTED brand BREADS at Aldi are made by various manufacturers with different Kashrus statuses; some with a reliable certification, e.g. OU, or Scroll K - P.Y. [=Pas Yisroel]; some without a reliable certification, and some with no certification. Check each product.

MANISCHEWITZ CHOLOV YISROEL PRODUCTS: Many Manischewitz chocolate and cheese products are mistakenly listed on a shopping website as Cholov Yisroel. Only Milk Chocolate Coated Matzo and regular Milk Chocolate Coins [not Crypto Gelt Coins] are Cholov Yisroel, when stated so on the label.

MrBEAST FEASTIBLES CHOCOLATES recently received OU Dairy certification, and are Kosher only when bearing the OU-D symbol on the packaging. Stores now have a mixture of product with the OU-D and product without. Check each package.

“THE ONLY BEAN” CRUNCHY ROASTED EDAMAME BEANS SNACKS have OU certification on several varieties. The Wasabi Soy Sauce variety, however, is not OU certified and does not bear an OU, but it is included in a Variety Pack that bears an OU on the outer box. The OU symbol on the box refers only to the certified varieties that bear the OU on their individual packages. [Note that some websites, e.g. Amazon and Meijer, incorrectly picture the Wasabi variety with an OU.]

TUMS ANTACID PRODUCTS:

 Only those Tums products that bear an OU or Diamond K symbol are acceptable. Some varieties are not certified and do not bear any symbol. In addition, some products are produced in both certified and non-certified plants, so that the same variety, even in the same store, may bear a symbol on some containers and not on others. Carefully check each container.

 Most of the certified products are pareve as stated on the label. However, Tums Chewy Delights contains milk and bears a DiamondK-D Dairy symbol. [Not to be confused with Tums Chewy Bites, which is not certified.]

SWEET BABY RAY'S SAUCES:

 Many varieties, but not all, are Kosher. Check each for the OU or OU-D symbol.

 SWEET BABY RAY'S BUFFALO BARBECUE SAUCE [“Buff-a-Cue”] currently contains milk, as listed in the ingredients, and bears an OU-D. This product may change to pareve in the future, and will then bear a plain OU. A Kosher website mistakenly lists this presently as pareve, and some shopping sites mistakenly picture this with a plain OU.

 SWEET BABY RAY'S BUFFALO WING SAUCE in retail size bottles is pareve and bears a plain OU. In the 1.5 oz., 2 oz. and gallon Foodservice sizes it is dairy and bears OU-D.

WISH-BONE DRESSINGS: Only those that bear the OU symbol are Kosher. Some varieties come in several versions, of which some are Kosher and some are not. Check each bottle carefully. Some current examples:

 THOUSAND ISLAND DRESSING - Only the “No Sugar Added” version is OU certified. Regular and Light versions are not.

 ITALIAN DRESSINGS - several versions are Kosher, and several are not.

THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS ARE CERTIFIED KOSHER DAIRY. Some labels mistakenly do not bear the D designation:

 ARIZONA WHIPPED PINEAPPLE ORANGE FRUIT JUICE COCKTAIL [OU-D]

 TOO GOOD GOURMET / GHIRARDELLI COOKIES - Chocolate Chip, Double Chocolate, Confetti [OU-D; missing D on front label]. (Sold locally at T. J. Maxx)

 SUPREMO ITALIANO SMALL CANNOLI SHELLS [KSA Dairy; mistakenly labeled Pareve]

THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS BEAR UNAUTHORIZED KASHRUS MARKING on some labels or images:

 MCCORMICK TARTAR SAUCE - unauthorized cRc symbol on images at online stores, e.g. Amazon and Walmart.

 RING POP GUMMY RINGS - unauthorized OU symbol. [Other Ring Pop items bearing the OU are authorized.]

 NUTSTOP brand LICORICE ALLSORTS - unauthorized cRc symbol. This product is not Kosher.

 HYSON PUFF PASTRY DOUGH SHEETS - unauthorized OU symbol.

 BUON GUSTO JALAPEÑO PEPPER SLICES - unauthorized KVH symbol.

 TOKIN’ CHEW HONEY - unauthorized OK and Earth K symbols.

RAW FISH It is preferable to purchase raw fish in a kosher fish store. If this is not possible, one must first make sure the fish is, in fact, a kosher species. The only reliable method of determining that a fish is from a kosher species is by inspecting its scales to be sure that they are the type that can be removed from the fish without ripping any flesh. (One notable exception is salmon where the flesh-color is unique and is considered a clear identifying mark of the kosher, salmon fish.) Secondly, the knives used to scale, eviscerate, fillet and/or cut the fish may have been previously used for non-kosher fish. To avoid this issue it is necessary to ask the store employees to clean the knife and work on a clean piece of butcher-paper. If this is not possible, there is basis to permit the purchase of packaged, pre-cut fish but it is necessary to scrub clean any surfaces that had been cut.

DAILY PLANK

Some of my clients complain of low back pain when they stand for long periods of time or perform other tasks. Isometric abdominal exercises such as planks will strengthen your core and likely reduce back pain by supporting spinal alignment.

Here's how:

Support your weight entirely on forearms and toes, with forearms positioned on a low ottoman or upholstered seat. Hold your body in a straight line: Elbows under shoulders, hips level without sagging. SQUEEZE your buttocks strongly. You will feel your tummy (abdominals) engaging. Pull ribs away from support. Push shoulders down (don't hunch). BREATHE even and slow. (CAUTION: You should not feel this in your back. If you do, check that you're pinching your buttocks together). Hold position 5-10 seconds. Slowly drop to knees. Rest. Repeat. Progress by increasing repetitions, moving this exercise to the floor.

ROASTED CARROTS with Pomegranate Seeds

Ingredients

1½ pounds carrots, rainbow preferred

3 Tbsp olive oil

1½ tsp za’atar spice blend

1½ tsp kosher salt

1½ tsp fresh ground black pepper

1 Tbsp pomegranate molasses

2 Tbsp pomegranate seeds

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to broil. Remove the greens if they are still attached to the carrots. Scrub carrots clean without peeling them. Split the carrots in half lengthwise (or quarter if necessary) so all the carrots are equal thickness. Place the carrots on a rimmed baking sheet.

2. Drizzle the carrots with the olive oil, sprinkle with the za’atar spice blend, salt and pepper. Toss to coat.

3. Roast for 8 to 10 minutes, carefully turning the carrots halfway through the cooking to make sure the carrots are charred on both sides.

4. Move to a serving plate. Drizzle pomegranate molasses over carrots and sprinkle pomegranate seeds on top before serving.
