Turn to Me By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob As Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur approach many of us are feeling a heightened sense of anxiety. But before we let this feeling paralyze us let us think about the gift that the month of Elul brings. It calls to us, declaring the message from Hashem: “Ani Ledodi Vedodi Li, I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me,” words of intimacy and connection. This is a promise that the Yemei Hadin, the days of judgment of Tishrei, are preceded by an entire month in which Hashem draws us close, whispering to each of us every day that He loves us. Imagine the following scenario. A parent and child get into a serious argument and things are said by the child that are very hurtful to his father. A few days go by with no contact between the two of them. The son knows he has crossed a line and that his actions did damage to the relationship, that there are real consequences, painful ones, for his behavior. He knows too that he needs to take responsibility and apologize, but he’s too scared. Scared that his father will reject him, maybe even abandon him, and stop loving him. The child is stuck, unable to face his father, and himself. After a few days of painful silence the father calls his son. He makes no mention of the terrible argument or the tension that is heavy between them, but instead simply states: “I’m just calling to say I love you.” And then he calls again the next day with the same message and continues to call day after day for a month communicating warmly his genuine caring for his child. It is obvious that within this context of parental love the prospect of saying “I’m sorry” becomes less daunting and very doable. As we move closer to Rosh Hashana it’s natural to feel some trepidation about the 10 SEPTEMBER 2013

judgment that these days represent. The prayers themselves are often scary, reminding us that so much is at stake, and so much of great importance is being decided at this time. And we know that fear can act as a barrier to feeling the intimate relationship that exists between each of us and Hashem that is at the heart of the Elul-Tishrei season. One may worry, “how can I face Hashem, it’s too scary asking forgiveness yet again, for the same mistakes I confessed to, last year?” The month of Elul speaks to us “Ani Ledodi Vedodi Li.” It’s as if Hashem is reassuring us, “don’t’ be frightened, My beloved, our relationship is a close one. Yes, of course, you must take responsibility, repent, and be involved in all the steps of the Teshuva process, but don’t be scared. Calm yourself and remember the message of Elul, we’re close, it’s going to be alright. I’m here, just turn to Me.” It’s so important for us to learn from Hashem, to walk in His ways. Look what Hashem does to make it easier for us to return to Him. A whole month of I love you. What about those people in our lives who have hurt us? Perhaps a difficult child, one’s spouse, or a former friend. And yet we know that it hurts them so much to feel the distance and the coldness. Can we reach out with warmth and caring to smooth the way for them to do what they must do, taking responsibility and apologizing? It’s so worth it. And it makes Hashem proud. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought. TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

KOSHER ALERTS In response to many questions about the kosher status of Dunkin’ Donuts products sold in terminal 3 of O’Hare airport, we wish to advise that the products that previously came from a certified source now come from a noncertified source and the cRc has no information on their status. The cRc has found an increase in the number of insects present in heads of red cabbage. In response, the cRc has adjusted its policy regarding heads of red cabbage and is now requiring that the first four (4) layers of leaves be removed and discarded. The rest of the head should then be rinsed, followed by a cursory inspection to rule out obvious infestation. This policy is in force until further notice.

JEWISH HUMOR ItÊs funny because we say so!

Heavenly Intervention Mrs. Friedman, the third grade Hebrew teacher, needed some supplies from a supply cabinet that was seldom used and was secured with a lock. She didn't know the combination, and called Rabbi Weinstein to give it a try. Rabbi Weinstein placed his fingers on the lock's dial and raised his eyes heavenward for a moment, confidently spun the dial and then he opened the lock. Seeing how impressed Mrs. Friedman was with this demonstration of faith, he smiled and confided, "The numbers are written on the ceiling." 22 SEPTEMBER 2013
