or oats, are not considered bread and need not meet the requirements of pas Yisrael. Important Note: While some of the products mentioned earlier need not be pas Yisrael, some of them—depending on their importance and on the method of their preparation—may be subject to the rules of bishul Yisrael, the laws restricting foods which were cooked by a non-Jew. Question: May one who lives in a community where pas Yisrael products are not available even during Aseres yemei teshuvah eat pas palter like he does during the rest of the year? Discussion: If pas Yisrael is available within an 18-minute drive from his community, he should drive there and purchase it. If pas Yisrael is not available within that distance, one should try to bake his own bread or bread-family products. If pas Yisrael is not available and one cannot bake his own bread, then he may eat pas palter. If one is on the road during Aseres yemei teshuvah, and he knows that within a 72

28

minute drive ahead [or 18 minutes back] there will be pas Yisrael available, he must travel that distance in order to obtain pas Yisrael. More than that he is not required to travel and may eat pas palter. Question: It often happens during Aseres yemei teshuvah that one forgets and prepares a dish containing pas palter (e.g., an ice cream dessert with cookie crumbs, etc.). May such a food be eaten during Aseres yemei teshuvah? Discussion: If the pas palter is recognizable, as it is in the above case, it is prohibited. If the pas palter is not recognizable, e.g., it dissolves, or all visible pas palter is removed, it is permitted, as long as pas palter is not the majority ingredient. [There is no requirement of shishim for this prohibition to be nullified.] If pas Yisrael items were baked in a clean utensil which was previously used for pas palter, the food may be eaten during Aseres yemei teshuvah.

Tearing Down Walls

and Building New Ones BY RABBI DR. JERRY LOB

Y

om Kippur is in the air. Just a little more time before we hear that haunting melody of Kol Nidrei, a prayer that involves the annulment of vows, ushering in this holiest of days. I once heard from a beloved teacher, that we begin Yom Kippur this way, expressing our understanding of the power of words because of the integral role prayer plays on this day. We will spend a good part of the next 25 hours using prayer to ask G-d for forgiveness, together with all the other requests we make of Him, regarding our hopes and dreams for ourselves and loved ones in the coming year. To pour out our heart to Hashem, we first need to acknowledge, by declaring Kol Nidrei, we recognize that we were not always careful enough with our speech, in fact, we often misused the power of words. Words matter, a vow creates reality, it has substance, and Halachic ramifications. The words we use affect others in profound ways. For example, in the way we talk to our children: “It’s so good to see you.” “I’ve missed you.” “I love you.” “We’re so proud of you.” Words which gently build a child’s budding confidence, words that nourish her soul, conveying the sentiments that she’s understood, accepted, and loved. Yes, words have power. They can create and build. But they can also devastate and damage. Words that cut, slicing through a fragile soul, such as: “You’re so lazy.” “You’ll never amount to anything.” “All you give me is aggravation.” When said by a parent these are words which can haunt a person throughout his life. Our words can build walls, walls that separate us from the people we care about, that separate us from others in our community, and can even separate us from Hashem. In Jewish thought we are told that this happens every time one sins. Each sin forms a brick in a wall, so to speak, a barrier, which divides us from each other, from Hashem, and from our very selves. And yet, just as our actions and words build words, they can also break them down. The force of a sincere apology, the dynamic of genuine repentance, can make the barriers disintegrate. Regarding our relationship with others, this does not necessarily occur right away, but over time, with the right words and attitude, demonstrating real regret, it usually will happen. “I’m really sorry, what I said to you is not true. I feel terrible about it,” goes a long way to repairing a relationship. “Please forgive me, I was wrong,” are words that are capable of initiating the healing process. Regarding our relationship

52

with Hashem, our Torah promises that T’shuva breaks through all barriers. In June of 1987 President Reagan challenged President Gorbachev at Brandenburg Gate at the Berlin Wall. This wall separated East Berlin from West Berlin, communism from democracy and the wall was the symbol of the Cold War that existed then between the Soviet Union and the democratic world. Mr. Reagan turned to Mr. Gorbachev, gestured to the wall, and shouted what would be recorded in history as the words that officially ended the Cold War: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” I have this imagery in my head. Hashem stands right beside us in the days leading up to Yom Kippur, and especially on Yom Kippur itself, and whispers to each of us: “Tear down this wall, the wall that separates us and gets in the way of our closeness.” Hashem asks us to come home, feel the redemption of T’shuva, and jump into His arms, the arms of a loving father who wants nothing more than to hold us and comfort us. So, Yom Kippur is a time of using words to reduce pain, to bring healing, to reconnect with all those from whom we’ve grown distant, family, friends, community, the Jewish people, and Hashem. Piercing the barriers, tearing down walls. And then, we spend the next four days building new walls, not walls of division but rather walls of connection. The walls of a Succah, walls that don’t separate and isolate, but rather the opposite, walls that frame a family, make a home, in which we sit with our families, friends, and community. We sit there too, with our nation, the entire nation of Israel, past, present, and future, and most importantly, we sit in the Succah feeling the embrace of the Presence of Hashem’s Shechinah. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought. COMMUNITY LINKS

Call to Arms BY RABBI MORDECHAI KAMENETZKY

Yom Kippur, the ultimate day of repentance, has the Jewish nation simultaneously praying, fasting and asking for forgiveness. It begins with the somber, quiet, and melodious intonation of Kol Nidrei and ends with the entire congregation shouting Hashem hu HaElokim (G-d is the AlMighty) seven times after various requests of forgiveness. It seems that at the time when our strength is waning our greatest and loudest pleas are spent. Shouldn’t we begin the day with the strong requests for forgiveness and save the subdued prayers for when our bodies are weak from hunger and our lips parched from lack of water? Rav Eichenstein, the Ziditchover Rebbe, tells the following story: One Friday, a man entered the study of the Tchortkover Rebbe with a request that was very common in those days. “My son was drafted into the army,” the man began. “However, we have a way out. On Sunday, we are going to a doctor who will falsely declare him unfit for service. This way he will be spared certain misery, perhaps even death in that terrible army. Rebbe,” he asked, “I need your blessing that he evade the draft.” The Rebbe quietly told him that Shabbos was nearing and he could not concentrate on blessings. The man should return to him on Friday evening after his tisch (ceremonious chasidic table). The man did so. After most of the chasidim had left, the man repeated his request, almost verbatim. Again the Rebbe was non-committal. “Return to me after the morning service.” Unperturbed, the man noted that he would really like to resolve this matter before Sunday morning. Shabbos morning, after services, the man approached the Rebbe again. Calmly he repeated the predicament. “Sunday morning I am going to a doctor who will falsely declare my son unfit for military service. Please pray that we will evade conscription.” The Rebbe was not moved. Again, he deferred until the afternoon. At the third Shabbos meal, the scene repeated again, precisely the way it had the previous three times. “I understand that you are leaving Sunday 66

morning. Come back to me late Saturday night,” said the Rebbe. “By then I will have an answer for you.” By this time, his Chasidim’s curiosity was piqued. They had never seen their Rebbe so reluctant to mete a blessing, especially when it was one that would save a Jewish soul from the frightful Polish army. Saturday night a large crowd gathered as the man approached with his request. Frustrated and disgruntled, the man, once again, repeated his story, almost verbatim, for the fifth time. Immediately, the Rebbe sprung from his chair and began to shout. “What are you asking me? Why would one even try to evade the service of our wonderful country? How dare you ask me for a blessing of that sort? Your son would make a fine soldier for our country. I wish him the best of luck in the army!” The man quickly scurried from the room and left town. The Chasidim stood shocked and bewildered. Never had they heard such an uncharacteristic outcry from the Rebbe. “I will explain,” said the Rebbe. “The man was a fraud. He had no son, and if he did, he wanted him in the army. He was sent by the government to test our loyalty. Thank G-d we passed the test.” “But, Rebbe!” cried the chasidim, “how did you know?” “Simple,” explained the Rebbe. “I watched the level of intensity. From the moment he met me until tonight there was no increase in intensity nor feeling of desperation with each request. The moment I heard his request tonight and it contained no more passion or desperation than his first request on Friday night, I knew he was a fraud.” We stand a whole entire day in prayer, and end with a ne’ilah prayer, after nearly 24 hours of pleading. The litmus test of our sincerity comes as the heavenly gates are being closed. As the sun begins to set, our pleas should intensify. That crescendo assures our sincerity. It also should assure us a Happy & Healthy Sweet New Year. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org COMMUNITY LINKS
