Winter Preparedness Tips Make sure that your car is ready to take on the snow, ice, and cold  

Tires Check the tire pressure and wear on your current tires, and your spare. Bald tires are dangerous in slippery conditions. Battery Batteries die more frequently in the winter. Older batteries are particularly susceptible. Be proactive, get your battery tested for free at local O'Reilly, AutoZone, and many tire stores. Antifreeze Antifreeze, also known as coolant, is essential for your engine in the winter. It works to keep it from freezing. Always make sure that your coolant levels are full and that there aren’t any leaks in your coolant system. Windshield Wipers In the winter your wipers need to be in tip-top shape in order to keep your windshield free of snow, ice, and other dirt that gets kicked up from the road. AutoZone and O’Reilly Auto Parts will install wipers for free, even in the cold. Washer fluid Always keep wiper fluid topped off. Salt and sand from the roads can get kicked up onto your windshield making it hard to see. We recommend keeping an extra bottle of fluid in your car. Lights Make sure that all of your exterior lights are properly functioning. Remember to clear snow and ice off of your lights before hitting the road. Gasoline level Try to keep your tank at least half full. This helps keep accumulated water from freezing inside of your fuel pump and also allows you to keep your car on and the heat running if you get stuck. Defroster and Heat Make sure to check that both of these systems are properly working in your vehicle before weather conditions make them a necessity. Did you know that your AC system is used in the winter to remove moisture and fog from the windshield? Winter Supplies Make sure that you have in your vehicle: Scraper/Brush, Flashlight, Water bottle and a few nonperishable snacks, Cell phone charger, Gloves, and a Blanket. 

Heel Slides

By Sharon Green , CPT

If you have a knee injury, you may worry that exercising could cause more pain. But the opposite is often true. Strengthening the muscles above and below your knee and increasing the range of motion in the knee joint is the best way to recovery and to prevent further injuries. A safe exercise I recommend is heel slides. You can try heel slides lying down or seated depending on your needs. Each one will target slightly different muscles. Here's how: Sit on the floor or lie on your back with your legs extended in front of you. Slide your heel along the floor as close as you comfortably can towards your buttocks. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds. Slowly slide back to the starting position, straighten your knee a bit harder, pressing the underside of your knee towards the floor with strength. Tips: Work up to 3 sets of 10 repetitions. Use slow, controlled movements. Avoid fast, jerky movements. If needed, use a strap or towel around your foot to assist with the movement. Place a plastic bag under your heel to allow it to slide easily across carpet or a bed. Wear socks or place a towel under your heel if you’re using a hard floor. If you're lying down, press your low back into the floor or place a folded towel under your low back or tail bone for support. Engage your core muscles to avoid arching your back. You may feel slight pressure or a sensation in or around your knee, but you shouldn't feel pain. If you do, stop and contact your doctor. Mrs. Sharon Green is a certified personal trainer, senior fitness specialist, and group workout instructor through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, NASM. To join a group workout or to receive a free fitness assessment, call (248) 730-6006. cpr/aed/first aid & insured.

Our open letter to the community, We, the undersigned health care professionals in our community, are deeply disturbed by the information contained in an advertisement published in the October Community Links touting Ivermectin, Vitamin D, Zinc, Vitamin C and Quercetin as measures that the advertisement claims to have been “proven effective” both “in preventing COVID-19 infections” and in treating “corona at all stages.” While the vitamins they recommend are likely harmless, Ivermectin is not recommended by the FDA or the CDC due to potential risks and lack of proven efficacy. The advertisement makes absolutely no mention of immunizations which have been shown to be highly safe and effective in preventing severe disease requiring hospitalization and even more effective in preventing death. It makes no mention of monoclonal antibody therapy which has been proven to prevent progression to severe disease in patients with risk factors. It makes no mention of isolating those who are ill to prevent spread to others. We feel that using the therapy recommended in the advertisement and ignoring the accepted medical recommendations put the public at risk and therefore we feel obligated to speak out. An open letter to 53 health care professionals: You recently issued an open letter to denounce a Community Links advertisement that touted ivermectin, vitamin D, zinc, vitamin C, and quercetin as “proven effective” measures to prevent and treat covid. We, the anonymous authors of this letter, wish to respond, not to defend any or all aspects of that ad—which we agree contained several errors and exaggerations—but to pose some questions and provide you (and the community) with information that you may not be aware of if your medical knowledge only comes from “approved” sources. As health care professionals who have earned the respect of your community, it behooves you to be fully informed on the latest medical science, including minority opinions, before discouraging potentially life‐saving preventions and treatments. To that end, we pose the following questions: Regarding the Safety and Efficacy of Ivermectin and Other Non‐Approved Therapeutics 1.

Are you aware that ivermectin (the human version, obviously) is included in the NIH’s list of “Antiviral Agents That Are Approved or Under Evaluation for the Treatment of COVID‐19”? The NIH does NOT recommend

against the use of ivermectin. NIH’s official stance is that it does not recommend “either for or against the use of ivermectin for the treatment of COVID‐19” but it recognizes that trials are ongoing.

s Skillet Chicken Caramelized Onion

linking our table to yours... INGREDIENTS For the Caramelized Onions 2 tablespoon margarine 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced

INSTRUCTIONS To caramelize the onions, heat margarine over medium low heat in a heavy ovenproof skillet. Add the onions & cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until they are a deep golden color. Remove from pan & set aside.

For the Chicken: 1/2 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1/4 teaspoon thyme 1/4 teaspoon allspice 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 lbs. chicken thighs with skin (4-5) 2 tablespoon oil 3/4 cup dry red wine 1/2 cup chicken broth 2 cup red California grapes parsley for topping

To make the chicken, preheat the oven to 400°. Mix the flour with all 5 spices & dredge each piece of chicken in the flour mixture, shaking off the excess. In the same pan as the onions, heat the oil over medium high heat, fry chicken skin-side down for a few minutes until golden brown; flip & cook for a few more minutes. Transfer to a plate (it’s okay if not fully cooked– it will finish in the oven – as long as it browned on the outside). Turn the heat down to let the oil cool off a bit. Add the wine & then add the broth & simmer until the mixture has slightly thickened. Add the onions & chicken to the pan (skin side up) & bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven, add the grapes, baste & bake for another 5-10 minutes. Top with parsley. Serve with a green salad, bread, quinoa or rice.
