A CHATZOS PARTNER EXPERIENCE.

#528 YESHUOS
When I saw they realtor entering the next door condo with the same individuals that had come to look at it a few days earlier, I knew it was time to call Kollel Chatzos.
EVERY MIDNIGHT
the distinguished talmidei chachomim of Kollel Chatzos gather in locations across the globe.
Our only Jewish neighbors had relocated to Eretz Yisroel months ago, and they were having difficulty finding a Jewish buyer. It now seemed like these individuals would take up residence next door. Horrifying news from Eretz Yisroel was reaching us daily, and the thought of living in such close proximity to these individuals was downright frightening.
During the darkest hours, when the rest of the world sleeps, they immerse themselves in vibrant Torah learning, bringing zechusim and yeshuos to klal yisroel.
When the realtor confirmed that they indeed were about to sign contract, I immediately picked up the phone and partnered with Kollel Chatzos for a month.

From out of nowhere, a nice Jewish family materialized and expressed interest in the condo. Unbelievably, they are now in the process of closing on the house!
MONROE MONSEY ISRAEL
With one call to Kollel Chatzos, we went from dreading the arrival of unwanted neighbors to looking forward to living side by side with wonderful Yidden.

WARM IT UP/COOL IT DOWN by Sharon Green, CPT
Warm Up
A good warmup before exercise has several benefits: increasing breathing rate, raising muscle temperature, and increasing blood flow. Studies show that cold muscles are more prone to injury. If you do want to stretch before a workout, make sure you warm up gently beforehand. How should you warm up? Simply do an easier version of your planned activity. If you›re taking a jog or playing ball, spend a few minutes taking easy practice throws or walking briskly. Then work your way up to light aerobic activity like running or walking briskly.
Cool Down
Ahh, here’s the stretch. The best time to stretch is immediately following sports or exercise. That›s when your muscles are most warmed up and easily stretched. An exception is for muscles or tendons which are tight from a previous injury. A doctor may advise stretching injured areas first thing in the morning. If you want a pro to help you get started, consider getting a trainer to show you what to do. He/she can help you do each move right to get the best results. 6KDURQ *UHHQ LV D FHUWLÀHG SHUVRQDO WUDLQHU WKURXJK WKH 1DWLRQDO $FDGHP\ RI 6SRUWV 0HGLFLQH 1$60 ZKR RIIHUV WUDLQLQJ FODVVHV WR LQGLYLGXDOV DQG JURXSV RI DOO DJHV DQG DELOLW\ &35 $(' )LUVW $LG ,QVXUHG COMMUNITY LINKS

Studying Torah Prepares One for the Real World?? Torah Values By: Rabbi Berel Wein
Rashi points out for us in the beginning of parshas Vayetzei that Yaakov stopped at the study house of Shem and Ever for fourteen years on his flight from Eisav to his uncle’s house in Aram. This seems to be a strange stopover at first glance. How will the instruction that he received in the school established by Shem and Ever contribute to his survival and success at the house of Lavan, the master conniver and duplicitous character? The question is phrased in a more current if blunter fashion in the Talmud itself – of what value are the Torah students to society at large? To meet Lavan, Yaakov apparently needs to train in different forms of legal, commercial and worldly pursuits. Studying Torah is all well and fine, but how does it prepare one for the real world? This question is heard today in thousands of Jewish households and is a most vexing one. Our world today is one of Lavan compounded. Where does Torah study and Torah knowledge fit into our milieu, into solving our problems and difficulties, in facing down our enemies? Yet, we find that on the whole Yaakov was quite successful in the house of Lavan. He acquires his wives there and his children are born and raised there. He waxes wealthy in spite of all of Lavan’s efforts to cheat him out of his just payments and wages. What courses of study did he take and master in the school of Shem and Ever that enabled him to so succeed? I have always felt that the answer lies in understanding the place and goals of a Torah education in one’s life. Most people, especially those who view it from the outside looking in, think that Torah education is purely a matter of material covered, of knowledge of facts, of understanding complex and difficult Talmudical concepts and statements. In truth it is all that but it is much more. A proper Torah education, a study course at the school of Shem and Ever, is meant to impart life-long values and a world view in which to fit the events of one’s life in a proper and moral fashion. One has to learn how to deal effectively with Lavan but one has to be very cautious not to become Lavan in the process. Self-defense and protection of one’s own interests is part of the Torah value system. But pleasantness, sensitivity, faith in God’s justice and promises, and a willingness to tolerate and accommodate others (even unpleasant others) are also a part of the value system of the Torah. Yaakov enters the school of Shem and Ever to absorb the Torah value system that will allow him to survive Lavan and not to fall spiritually and become Lavan in the form of Yaakov. One of the most difficult tasks that faces Jewish society today is to remain a kingdom of priests and a holy people even when struggling with Lavan, Yishmael and Eisav for our very existence. Our schools have to teach Torah values and not be satisfied merely with knowledge, grades and test scores. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org

Avoiding Arguments By: Rabbi Moshe Goldberger
[The Torah says:] “Do not be like Korach and his congregation” (Numbers 17:5). [On this, the Talmud explains:] “Anyone who promotes or maintains disharmony transgresses a Torah prohibition” (Sanhedrin 110a). Sometimes we attempt to display our superiority by correcting others and trying to prove they are wrong. We need to stop and ask ourselves, What is the purpose? Why argue with people and cause them discomfort and embarrassment? Maimonides writes in ‘Guide for the Perplexed’: “One should listen to other people’s words and not be obstinate... as it says: ‘Don’t stiffen your neck’ (Deut 10:16).” Knowing how to refrain from talking and how to avoid verbal dissension is a very valuable skill. The Sage Shimon ben Gamliel told us, “All my life I was raised amongst the Sages and I did not find anything better for the body than silence” (Avos 1:17). We are also taught to become disciples of Aaron, to always love and pursue peace (Avos 1:12). If you argue with and contradict others, you may win the battle sometimes, but you will never win the war, because the friction that develops may cause you to lose a friend. The more we argue with others, attempting to set them straight, the more they will try to assert themselves and their authority by fighting back. If, on the other hand, you admit the other person’s importance and leave him be, he will calm down, too. “A gentle response will turn back anger” (Proverbs 15:1). When you yourself are corrected, admit to the truth. Express your thanks for points brought to your attention that you did not think about. It is great to be saved from making a mistake. Torah Study When it comes to learning Torah, we do encourage discussions and disputes. When these arguments are for the sake of Heaven, as by Beis Hillel and Beis Shammai (Avos 5:20), they are ideal. Beis Hillel and Beis Shammai’s goals were to uncover the truth in God’s Torah, with respect to each other’s right to a different opinion. Korach, on the other hand, argued for the sake of his own honor. For attempting to destroy Moses, who was considered the foundation of the earth, he was punished by being swallowed by the earth. The punishment was extremely appropriate because Korach attacked Moses verbally, with his mouth, and the earth swallowed him by opening its “mouth.” The Talmud points out that Beis Hillel and Beis Shammai were always friendly and affectionate toward each other, and they did not refrain from marrying into each other (Yevamos 14b). We also learned that Beis Hillel was careful to listen to Beis Shammai’s view first and then to study their teachings carefully before voicing their own opinions (Eiruvin 13b). Because of these actions, the Talmud says that Beis Hillel merited to have the law follow their position in most cases. When you love and pursue peace, you are always a winner. (Continued on page 46)

(Continued from page 44)
Be Yourself Every person is obligated to say, “Because of me, God created the world.” (Sanhedrin 37a) What a stunning declaration! Do we truly understand this message, accept who we are, and recognize that we have the power to reach our goals? Are you happy with your life? Do you feel comfortable with who you are, or do you find yourself trying to conform to others and forcing yourself into a pattern that is not for you? Study your own personality and develop your individuality. We all have talents and skills that make us unique, but we need to develop them. No one can do it for you. As the Sage Hillel always said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?” (Avos 1:14). It is said that the biggest mistake people make when applying for a job is not being themselves. Be yourself. There is no one exactly like you. Each of your experiences in life are uniquely yours. God placed you in a certain family and a particular environment to enable you to become the best you. This concept can be applied as well to other people. Your spouse, children, friends, and coworkers are also unique people with unique personalities. Encourage every person to develop his maximum potential and not to imitate others. King Solomon teaches, “Educate the child according to his way” (Proverbs 22:6). With our children we have to be particularly careful to encourage individuality. Each child is his own person and must be taught this. Be yourself -- and don’t impose your will on others. Allow them to be themselves, too. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org
