TIGHT HAMSTRINGS?
Live better, feel better, be your best self.
Sharon Green (248) 730-6006
Personal trainer, group fitness, and senior fitness specialist.
Do you ever notice older people walking with bent knees?
One main reason for this to occur is shrinking hamstrings. Hamstrings are large muscles located at the back of your legs. They are connected with your pelvis to your lower leg and serve as a rubber band that brings power to your muscles when walking, running, and doing tasks. As we age, our hamstrings shorten, which prevents us from standing properly and walking with an excellent posture.
Prolonged sitting and lack of physical activity can contribute to tightened hamstrings even in the younger population.
Here is a simple hamstring stretch you can do yourself to prevent bent knees or to restore them:
Lying Hamstring Stretch
Lie on your back and use a tie or towel to hook the center of your foot (not the wide part of your foot), then straighten your knee to stretch easily. Stop lifting leg just before knee feels ready to start to bend. You will feel this stretch behind your knee. Hold for 30 seconds. Release. Repeat. After specific sessions, you may notice amplified flexibility with your movement.
