Have you ever noticed an exaggerated forward rounding of someone's upper back? You may have thought, "that will never happen to me." What you probably observed is thoracic kyphosis, which is a disorder affecting front-to-back curve of the thoracic spine. Your thoracic spine, as a mobile joint, is one that factors into many areas of the body where we hold the majority of our stress: neck, shoulders, lower back. This stress, combined with sedentary behaviors (seated positions for hours at a time, lack of exercise) can cause poor posture and function over time, and even turn into pain if left untreated.

The T-spine rotation which, if done a few times a week, will increase mobility, and also reduce damage.

HERE'S HOW: On all fours with hands under shoulders and spine in neutral position, place L hand on upper back or back of neck. Do not pull down or put pressure onto neck. Begin to rotate leading with eyes, head and shoulder down as far as possible toward floor, then towards R hand. Now in same position, reverse the motion leading with the eyes, head and shoulder rotating upwards as far as possible. Maintain position of R arm with elbow straight while moving upper body in both directions. Repeat 4 times, rolling through full range of motion before switching sides.

I like the T-Spine Rotation since it's dynamic, meaning movement is combined with stretch, so you can actually measure your progress by how closelly you can accomplish a full range of motion.

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350º and grease an 8x8" pan.

Combine the butter and sugars for the cake and mix until fluffy. Add the egg, oil, and vanilla and mix until combined.

Stir together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon and stir into the butter mixture, mixing just until combined. Stir in the chopped apples. Spread into the prepared pan.

Mix together the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla for the cream cheese layer and spread over the cake batter in the pan.

Combine all the streusel ingredients using your hands or a pastry blender until well combined.

Sprinkle over the cream cheese mixture.

Bake for about 45 minutes or until the topping is browned.

Can be stored in the refrigerator.
