Shavuos RABBI CHAIM DOVID GREEN
T
he Maggid of Dubno was famous for answering all questions with a parable. Even when he was asked why he always answered with parables! Here is the answer he gave. “Truth was walking about town but everyone was scared to look at him. Wherever he went, people screamed and ran away because he was completely naked! Along came his friend named Parable who told Truth that if he wanted to be accepted, he would offer him a suit of clothing. That is what happened. Parable gave Truth a suit so people would be more comfortable in his presence.” The Maggid was once asked why there is a need for the two Jewish Holidays of Simchas Torah and Shavuos as they seem to have the same function. Why don’t we condense them into one grand Holiday? He answered with one of his most famous stories. Once there was a King and Queen who were without children for many years. In desperation they visited an old wise man who gave them a potent blessing with one caution attached. If the child would be a girl, no man must see her until her wedding day, lest she die! When the
Sinai was a mountain of commitment, aspiring to an ocean of deep love and profound understanding. Queen gave birth to a baby girl a secluded island was prepared for the Princess to live on where she would be raised in the finest royal style with all female educators. When the Princess came of age, the King approached a handsome nobleman and offered his daughters hand in marriage. “Sure” was the response, “let’s meet her!” After the King explained that his daughter was not to be seen before the wedding day, the nobleman declined. Time after time the King was confronted with the same frustrating reaction. “Let’s see her!” “If not, then how do I know what I’m getting myself into?” continued on page 32

continued from page 30
Finally, the last worthy man told the King that he was greatly honored by the offer. If the princess had the attributes of her royal parents then he would be delighted to marry her even without seeing her till the wedding day. A date was set and the whole world was invited to the celebration. Everyone came to dance and rejoice. A marvelous time was had by all... except the groom! He was overcome with anxiety. He had hidden his inner fears over not having even met his bride. Even after the wedding he remained apprehensive. He anticipated that, although she was beautiful, somehow her ugly side would eventually surface. After months of happy marriage, he came to appreciate more and more profoundly, her wonder, beauty, charm and wisdom. Each day another wondrous facet was revealed. The Prince then became upset that he had withheld himself from joyful expression at his own wedding. He approached the King and admitted that although now he was delighted beyond measure, at the time of the wedding he had been filled with inner turmoil. A decision was made that a new party would be arranged. All the guests would be invited back but this time only one person, the Prince himself, would dance to express his supernal delight. The Maggid of Dubno explained that when the Torah was offered to the world there were questions about it’s contents. However, when the Jewish nation was given it’s turn to answer, there was a clear consensus that they were committed to do even before understanding all it
contained. The goal, though, of total trust was not yet complete. The mind can know what the heart cannot yet accept. After living with Torah and experiencing what King Solomon described as “All it’s ways are pleasant and all it’s paths are peace” (Mishlay), then the Jewish nation is ready on Simchas Torah to express intense joy over The Almighty’s precious gift. A great Rabbi asked a group of his students who were preparing . for marriage, “On what do you base your marriage?” They unanimously agreed, “On love and understanding!” The Rabbi corrected them saying that although their sentiments are correct, they would not be able to build a marriage on love and understanding because they as yet neither loved nor understood their respective brides. Love is something that grows with understanding and the experience of sharing. Love and understanding are goals, not basis. The foundation of a marriage is a total and absolute commitment to arrive at the mountain peak of love and understanding. Similarly, the basis of our relationship with the Almighty is in this awesome initial step: to act...to learn...perchance to understand and therefore love. Sinai was a mountain of commitment, aspiring to an ocean of deep love and profound understanding. As the entire Oak tree resides in the acorn, so is the whole of Jewish destiny in the seed of that initial commitment from which we can continuously grow and to which is constantly referred to as a wedding day! Good Yom Tov!
The foundation of a marriage is a total and absolute commitment to arrive at the mountain peak of love and understanding

0DNH VXUH \RX JHW WKH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ WKH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV DQG WKH ULJKW IUDPHV 7KH ULJKW WHFKQRORJ\ How lenses are made have changed very quickly as technology has improved our abilities to create better progressive lenses. Digital lenses provide for a wider field of vision, greater accuracy of progression and clear peripheral vision. 7KH ULJKW PHDVXUHPHQWV With progressive lenses especially, millimeters make a difference. Is the reading part of the lens sitting at the exact spot that it should? Does the distance area begin too high or too low? Besides the measurements in the lenses, your posture needs to be taken into account. If your optical professional is not measuring all of the
areas you will be getting a less that optimum visual experience. 7KH ULJKW IUDPHV Most people think frames are all about fashion - how they look. While finding frames that suit you is important, finding frames that will enhance your vision by how it accommodates your lenses is even more important.

Q
Is it permissible to buy clothing, furniture, and household items during the days of Sefirah? I guess what I am trying to understand is how is Sefiras HaOmer different from the Three Weeks?
A
practice is to refrain from moving or making home improvements during sefirah, one should follow the principle of not deviating from family custom, as is true in all matters of Halachah.
Q
We have always kept the mourning restrictions during first half of Sefirah, but this year there is a family simcha that we would like to attend. Is it permissible for us to change our custom and keep the Sefira restrictions during the second half even though we have a longstanding minhag of keeping the first half?
From a halachic point of view, the laws of Sefirah and the laws of the Three Weeks are completely different. During the Three Weeks there is a restriction against reciting the blessing of shehecheyanu, but no such restriction exists for the days of the Sefirah. It is, therefore, permitted to eat new fruit in season and to buy new clothing, dishes or furniture during this time period. Still, there are some communities where shehecheyanu is not recited during sefirah. Some communities are even stricter and refrain from buying new clothes during sefirah altogether, even basics which do not require the blessing of shehecheyanu. Since these restrictions have valid sources — some can be traced as far back as the Rishonim — they should be upheld by the communities or families who keep these traditions. But those who do not have these customs are not required to observe them, as the halachah makes no such stipulations. One who was under the impression that it is halachically prohibited to recite shehecheyanu during sefirah, but learned subsequently that this is not the case, does not need hataras nedarim in order to change her custom and recite shehecheyanu during sefirah.
It depends where you live: If you live in a community where everyone follows one custom, then you may not deviate from the accepted minhag of your city. If, however, there is no one accepted custom in your community, then you are permitted to change your custom from year to year. In your case, however, it is unnecessary for you to switch customs: You may attend the family simcha even if you are keeping the restrictions of sefira during that time.
Q

A
We would like to renovate our kitchen. May we do so during the days of Sefiras HaOmer?
Renovating or moving into a new house or apartment during sefirah is permitted. It is also permitted to paint or decorate one’s home at this time. But, as we said earlier, if one’s family
A
Q
Is it okay to hold get-togethers or parties where music is not played, such as a Melaveh Malka or a women’s get-together?
A
There is no restriction against a Melaveh Malkah or a women’s get together during the days of sefirah if no music is being played. I have heard that it is better for women not to count Sefirah with a brachah. Is this true and if so, what is the source for this halachah? Women are exempt from counting the Omer, as they are exempt from every mitzvah which is time-bound. While it is continued on page 48

generally permitted for women to fulfill mitzvos from which they are exempt, Mishnah Berurah recommends that women who do count Sefiras ha-Omer should do so without reciting a brachah. He gives two reasons for this recommendation: 1. There is a reasonable chance that they will forget to count one day [since they do not go to shul where the counting is done together with a tzibuur]. 2. Generally speaking, they do not understand the meaning of the words [since in past generations, most women were not versed in lashon ha-kodesh]. Nowadays, when most women do understand the meaning of the words, many poskim are of the opinion that women should count and do so with a brachah, provided that their husband or parents remind them of doing so on a consistent basis. This was the custom of the women at the home of the Steipler Gaon, and women may follow that ruling. But this applies only to women of Ashkenazi descent; Sefardic women may not count sefiras ha-Omer with a blessing at all.
Q
What if I cannot remember whether or not I counted Sefirah last night. Must I assume that I did not, and stop counting with a brachah, or may I assume that I did count?
A
One who is uncertain as to whether he missed the previous day’s count, is permitted to count the remaining days with a blessing.
Q A
Is nail-cutting sefirah?
permitted
during
Yes, it is; only hair cutting is forbidden during sefirah. It is also permitted to tweeze eyebrows or eyelashes and to comb one’s hair even though some hair will get pulled out in the process. Married women may cut hair that is protruding from their head covering. In cases of necessity, e.g., for the purpose of a shidduch or sholom bayis, women and girls are permitted to shave their legs or remove facial hair.

D-TAG Detroit Technology Awareness Group
18877 W. 10 Mile Road, Suite 250F Southfield, MI 48075
248-215-0051
Dear Friend, th
On Monday April 28 , Rabbi Moshe Drew the head of Tag Global, came to Detroit from Lakewood, New Jersey. Over the last 4-5 years, under the direction and guidance of the venerated Mashgiach, Rav Mattisyahu Solomon Shlit"a, R' Moshe developed the TAG program, which has been successfully implemented in 25 cities across the globe. Rabbi Drew shared with us his unparalleled expertise, demonstrating the many solutions TAG offers its clients on a daily basis. Why TAG? As the world progresses we are all witness to the ever growing lure and dependency society places upon technology. Whether it is the accessibility the World Wide Web provides, the breach in morality promoted through social media programs, or the decline in healthy interpersonal interaction which is increasingly plaguing our world, its effects are widespread. Shul decorum, Shiurim/Classes, and even family time are ruined and lost due to the diversion these items create. We ought to recognize, however, that they can and must be used responsibly! What is TAG? TAG is a unique organization striving to provide solutions in the fast paced world we live in. TAG offers: Education, Advice, Solutions and Support. Be it simple content disabling, filtering, or navigating more complicated technological dilemmas and scenarios, TAG is available 20 hours a day for phone support aside from its regular office hours. The use of Client ID numbers in lieu of names, guarantees confidentiality. Call Before You Buy! TAG will provide you with expert advice when you’re looking for a new device. TAG provides the necessary knowledge, empowering the consumer to make an educated purchase. There is no fee for any of the services rendered by TAG; it is done totally for the good of the community! Local Office Now Open. The opening of a local office is an important step, strengthening our community. Many mobile devices are not accessible remotely, necessitating a local branch which is equipped to avail hands-on assistance to everyone. D-TAG will now provide the benefits and services that this exceptional organization offers, to our community. When and Where is D-TAG? 18877 W. 10 Mile Rd. Suite 250F, Southfield, MI. Sunday: 2:00 – 4:00 PM Wednesday: 7:00 – 9:00 PM Or call us at: 248-215-0051. TAG’s phone line is open 20 hours every weekday, from 4:00 AM until Midnight! Stop by during our local office hours, or take advantage of our phone support. D-TAG works with the client to choose his or her own level of protection, which D-TAG will implement. We all know that there are ways around any lock. However, to merit G-D’s divine assistance we must do our best. We then can Daven that Hashem bless us with success for ourselves, our families and our entire community. COMMUNITY LINKS

Jewish Humor Coach Epstein was having some trouble when he was coaching the Stars of David for the little league baseball team. At one point during a game, the Coach Epstein said to one of his young players, “Do you understand what a team is?” The little boy nodded. “Do you understand that what matters is whether we win together as a team?” “Yes, Sir,” the little boy said. “So,” Coach Epstein continued, “when a strike is called, or you’re out at first, you don’t argue or yell at the umpire. Do you understand all that?” Again the little boy nodded. “Yes, Coach, I understand.” “Good,” said Coach Epstein nervously. “Now, could you go over there and explain it to your mother?”

OY, IT’S BACK!
by Sharon Green, CPT
We may never truly appreciate our back and all it does for us -- until it starts to hurt. If you’re nursing back pain you’re not alone. 80% of the adult American population joins you in your suffering! Bones, muscles, and joints that make up your back are your body’s biggest support system. When any part of that system is weakened or injured, your back struggles to bear your weight. Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy back:
1. Don’t Slouch Practice good standing and sitting postures. It’s a mindset. If you have to sit for long periods of time, get up every 30 minutes or so to stretch your back. Turn your upper body in your chair, grab the chair back and rotate your head to look behind you. Hold that position for 20 seconds on each side.
2. Shluff Correctly Lying on your side instead of on your stomach takes about 55 pounds of pressure off your back. If you prop up your knees with a couple of pillows, it reduces pressure even more.
3. Use Those Muscles Every doctor out there agrees: Keep your back strong and limber by exercising it at least two times a week. Talk to your doctor before you start exercising as some exercises can be harmful.
4. Slim Down If you’re several pounds heavier than your doctor recommends for your height, losing weight is an important part of pain prevention. Begin by exercising, eating smaller portions and starting meals with fresh vegetables and a cup of water.
5. Bone Care Weight bearing exercise builds bones. Also make sure you’re getting enough calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorous.
6. Wear Proper Shoes Comfortable yet supportive shoes that cushion each step is crucial to back health.
7. Lighten Your Load Only carry what you need & distribute the weight of your bag on both shoulders to even out the stress on your back. When lifting heavy objects, bend at the knee, not the waist and avoid twisting.
8. Quit Smoking Smoking restricts blood flow to the discs that cushion and support your spine. Children of Hope BY RABBI DR. JERRY LOB
T
he “Sefira days”, the period of counting between Pesach and Shavuos, from the Exodus to G-dly Revelation and receiving the Torah, often evoke in me somewhat contradictory feelings. On the one hand, this is an intensely joyous time, replete with miracles, and incredible spiritual growth, leading up to a climax that continues to nourish us more than 3300 years later. On the other hand, we are taught that this period is a time of great mourning, the days during which the 24,000 students of Rebbi Akiva died, a devastating disaster not only because of the enormity of the loss of life, but also from the perspective of the great amount of Torah knowledge and wisdom that was lost. And yet, even as we ponder the tragedy, we can’t lose sight of an essential piece of the story. The Talmud tells us that Rebbi Akiva started over, teaching five students, and from these five great men the entire written Torah, the oral Torah, and all of its traditions were passed down to future generations intact. Stop and think about this for a moment. Rebbi Akiva’s life work was destroyed, and instead of giving up and giving in to feelings of despair, he rolled up his sleeves and began anew. Teaching Torah, guiding students, taking responsibility for Klal Yisrael, and giving us all a legacy of hope. I remember being in awe of my parents when I first realized what they had accomplished in a few short years after the Holocaust. Within seven years of liberation from Auschwitz my father z”l had come to America, learned a new language, married my mother (a survivor of the Budapest ghetto,) started building a family and
62
learned how to be a businessman. Both my parents lost so much, parents, siblings, many nieces and nephews, and yet rebuilt a family based on Torah values. When I was around 20, the age of my father when he was first taken to Auschwitz, I asked him how he could do it. How he could start over, work so hard, have children, not be scared, or in despair, or fall into a deep depression. He said something like “you do what you have to do and you trust in Hashem.” And then he smiled at me. In later years I realized that this is what it means to be a part of Klal Yisrael. There is always trust, there is always hope. We did it after the Churban, the destruction of our Holy Temple, and we did it after the Inquisition, and after the Crusades, and after the Holocaust, and after the Intifadas. We are the children of Rebbi Akiva. We are the children of hope. Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Chicago working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topics relating to psychology, relationships, parenting, education, and Jewish thought. COMMUNITY LINKS
