Comments similar to this often come my way while assessing clients‘ musculoskeletal abilities. Crazy as it sounds, even the younger population (under 50) are disconcerted when asked to remain on one foot while attempting upper body activity, unless they play sports or work out regularly. Maintaining balance requires engaging in counterbalance activity. Strong core muscles are key.

The good news is, the average healthy individual can gain back full function with just a few exercises, such as this one, performed 3x/week:

While holding a chair back with your L hand, imagine that you are standing in the center of a clock, the number 12 directly in front of you, and the number 6 directly behind you.

Lift your right leg and extend your right arm so it’s pointing to the number 12. Next, point your arm towards the number three, and finally, point it behind you at the number 6. Bring your arm back to the number three, and then to the number 12. Look straight ahead the whole time. Now try reaching across your body, as if to catch a fly that‘s coming from number 9 on your left.

Repeat this exercise twice per side. The goal, of course is to let go of the chair!
