Letter and ruling
from Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, Shlit"a:
I was asked, "where is the proper place for matonos le'evyonim?"
and I replied that I give to Kupat Ha'ir, since they distribute to the desperately poor, the Gabba'im are like Rabi Chanina ben Teradyon, and they distribute to all circles. That is where matanos le'evyonim should be given.
and that is where one should give matanos le'evyonim" Chaim Kanievsky

Purim – Don’t Lose Hope By Rabbi Berel Wein The current spate of anti-Semitic attacks, op-eds and boycott movements serve to remind us that Amalek is alive and thriving as usual. There was a short period of time a few decades ago when many Jews were lulled into thinking that all of this baseless hatred and nastiness was a thing of the past. Even the most naive among us today realize that this is unfortunately not the case. Therefore, remembering Amalek is a relatively easy commandment to fulfill today – one need only read the newspaper or listen to the radio or TV or view the internet to meet Amalek face to face, live and in person. How to counteract and deal with Amalek has been a continuing and never-ending problem throughout Jewish history. Apparently, no satisfactory and permanent solution to the problem has ever been found. Perhaps that in itself is the basic lesson of the commandment of remembering Amalek. We have to remember that the problem is constant and continuing and that it has remained insoluble for millennia. We should not be surprised or even overly discouraged by its sinister presence in our lives and world today. We must do everything possible to combat it but we should always remember that it is not given to pat solutions or wishful thinking. It is apparently part of the Jewish condition – our very terms of existence. The story of Purim is the story of Amalek contained, but not completely defeated and destroyed. Haman is hydra- headed and has always had disciples and followers. Haman and his sons were thwarted and hanged but that did not prove to be much of a deterrent to all of the Hamans that have followed throughout history. In terms of the destruction of Jews, Hitler was far more successful than was Haman having killed six million Jews in five years of hate and terror. Yet Hitler destroyed Germany completely as well, with far more Germans than Jews being killed in that terrible and tragic war. So again, one would think that the lesson of Amalek would have been learned by now. But the reality of Amalek is that it defies logic, self-interest and history and its lessons. Purim is our only hope in containing Amalek. Purim is always hidden, unpredictable, surprising and unexpected. Yet it is also a constant in Jewish life and history. The survival of the Jewish people remains as the miracle of all history and that miracle is omnipresent in our current world. The existence and accomplishments of the State of Israel is an offshoot of this constant and continuing miracle. Israel and its achievements give us a sense of Purim every day of the year. The miracle may not be superficially visible but it is certainly present and alive. The Talmud’s statement about the inability to distinguish between Haman and Mordechai is indicative of the mystery of Purim. Purim is not always what it appears to be at first glance. It is the hidden part of Purim that fascinates and confuses us. Our salvation is always unexpected and many times defies any form of human wisdom and expertise. Purim tells us never to despair or lose hope regarding our current difficulties and uncertain future. It is easy to fall into a funk when viewing all of the difficulties that surround us. Purim preaches to us that such a dark attitude is inconsistent with Jewish faith and Torah values. That is why the rabbis stated that only Purim is the only eternal holiday on the Jewish calendar. We will always need Purim and its message to continue to function and achieve. For without Purim present and operative, we fall into fearing that Amalek may yet, God forbid, triumph. So let us rejoice in the knowledge that Purim is here with us and all will yet be well for the nation and people of Mordechai and Esther. Low or mid? Sharp stabbing, or dull aching? According to statistics, sooner or later, 8 out of 10 of us will experience some back pain. Let‘s set the record straight about what you may have heard: MYTH: ĂĐŬ ĞdžĞƌĐŝƐĞƐ ĂƌĞ ŬŶŽǁŶ ƚŽ ƌĞƐŽůǀĞ ŵŽƐƚ ďĂĐŬ ƉƌŽďůĞŵƐ͘ FACT: Strengthening the abdomen, especially isometric (planks) is known to protect the back from injury, as well as resolve most back problems. Have a competent trainer show you how. MYTH: ƚƚĞŶƚŝŽŶ͊ ^ŝƚ ƵƉ ƐƚƌĂŝŐŚƚ Ăƚ Ăůů ƚŝŵĞƐ͊ FACT: Sitting or standing too straight for long periods of time can lead to muscle strain. If you‘re not naturally postured, take breaks a few times a day, letting your back curve slightly. Take walks. I recommend not sitting for longer than 20 minutes at a time unless you‘re part of the audience. MYTH: ŽŶ͚ƚ ůŝĨƚ͘ FACT: The average man shouldn‘t attempt to lift anything heavier than 55 lbs and woman - 35 lbs, but it‘s a matter of how. Get close to the object, turn your feet out, bend your knees (squat) and lift holding object close to you with your head up and chest tall. Avoid bending or twisting at the waist. Don‘t lift higher than 90° (not past shoulder height). FACT: The more pounds, the more likely pain. As you may guess, extra pounds puts stress on the back as well as on most of your joints. HAMENTASCHEN CHALLAH Ingredients: • • • •
5 large onions 6 cloves of garlic ¼ cup olive oil salt and pepper to taste
Instructions: 1.
Chop the onion and garlic and saute in the olive oil until a golden brown. 2. Season with the salt and pepper and let cool. 3. Use your regular challah recipe and when ready to shape, tear off medium pieces of dough and form into balls. 4. Using a rolling pin, flatten the dough into a circle making sure it is not rolled too thin. 5. Spoon 1-2 tablespoons of the onion mixture into the center of the circle. 6. Pinch 3 sides together and form a triangle so that the filling shows through. 7. Place on your baking sheet with the filled side down so that it will not split open as it rises. 8. Let the filled dough rise and brush with beaten yolk and sprinkle with sesame seeds. 9. Bake as usual for a small challah and cool on a wire rack. 10. These may be frozen and reheated in a warm oven for 15 minutes before serving.

From Daf Yomi to becoming a Talmid Chacham “Learn. Review. Remember” And now you can track by app! The Shas Chabura learning and review program is a proven method used by thousands throughout the world committed to learning and knowing Shas. Many of our participants finish Shas once a year or once in 2-3 years. The key is understanding the function of Chazara-Review. Chazara is not only reviewing the past, but more importantly, building on the past, as Rashi teaches us in increase your -!#+*# )('&% $#"! )-,#%*. (Kiddushin 30a) understanding through review. The review program is based on scientific studies in long- term and short-term memory. Every day one learns the new Blatt and reviews what he learned yesterday, a week ago, a month ago, 3 months ago and then every year he reviews what he learned a year ago, each year .+% (0/ )'$/%# (., reviewing A Talmudo B’yado Calendar is provided to keep track of the daily Blatt and Chazaros. It is now available on a Shas Chabura App as well as on a Daf Yomi printout with the Chazara schedule. The key to success is getting familiar with the Daf (rather than trying to master the Daf) and increase one’s understanding with each Chazara, since by increasing one’s scope of Yedios Hatorah, one is able to increase one’s understanding of the Daf. This program is ideal for those who have 2-3 hours a day, in addition to their Daf Yomi shiur or Chavrusa.
Those who have only one hour a day (besides their shiur), can still benefit from our program, as follows: 1. Spend a half hour every day preparing the Daf with Artscroll to get a general idea of the Daf. (This is also essential for those with 2-3 hours a day to add to their shiur or chavrusa.) This will allow you to greatly increase your understanding of the shiur. 2. The next day, besides preparation and the shiur, spend another half hour to review yesterday’s Blatt with a Chavrusa, Artscroll or digital device. 3. If you have more time, review the Blatt from a week ago. 4. Have a notebook and write down every day an interesting Chazal or Halacha or Pasuk you gleaned from your learning. In 7 ½ years from the moment you start, not only will you be dancing at the Siyum Hashas for finishing, but you will have accumulated many yedios in Shas that will serve as a strong foundation to be able to begin a full review program. Endorsed by Gedolim worldwide including: Rav Y. S. Elyashiv zt”l, yb”l Rav Chaim Kanievsky, and Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky See the powerful video on our website
