Daniel Kurtzer former U.S. Ambassador to Israel and Egypt

The Peace Puzzle:

America’s Quest for Arab-Israeli Peace Tuesday, February 25, 2014 7:30 p.m. The Berman Center for the Performing Arts Jewish Community Center, West Bloomfield Achieving peace in the Middle East may seem as improbable as putting together a puzzle with more than a million blank pieces. But in fact, possibilities for peace were often closer than anyone could have imagined - and still exist. Join us as Ambassador Daniel Kurtzer reveals the ways in which presidential administrations have (or have not) moved talks forward; the misunderstandings, ignorance and lost opportunities that have plagued the negotiations; and the true impediments to peace. Stolen Bread

RUCHIE WEISBERG, AUTHOR OF KADDISH FOR MY MOTHER

P

risons today cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Prisoners today, even those who have committed the most heinous crime, live in luxury compared to how horrendous and inhumane innocent Jews were treated in the concentration camps. In Bergen Belsen my mother was expected to do heavy labor, wearing the flimsiest of clothing regardless of the freezing weather. Her meal was a ration of stale bread and a small ladle full of thin soup. As a consequence, many women died of hunger; my mother was envious of them at times. Though we do not like to think that a Jewish woman was capable of committing suicide, many of them preferred a quicker death and threw themselves against the electrified wire fence. But, my mother was an Orthodox girl who believed in G-D and the sanctity of life. She later came to realize that this faith, however tenuous at times, is what gave her the will to survive. But again, she never asked questions for which she knew there could never be any answers. Why, why, why was a constant plea around the camps, but she quickly learned that G-D was not going to be forthcoming with his answers. This is what faith meant to her, anger certainly, but acceptance as well. A young girl who my mother befriended had somehow managed to smuggle in a little “luach”, a Hebrew calendar. “Chana, tomorrow is Pesach.” My mother was horrified, what would she do without her ration of bread? She would surely die of hunger or the Nazis would kill her for not being able to work at full capacity. She decided, even in the face of death, she would not defy G-D’s prohibition of eating bread on Passover. After all, she reasoned, He freed us once from slavery, perhaps keeping this mitzvah would bring her people freedom again! Did she really believe this? Who can really know? I am her daughter, but I by no means will ever be her equal. So, these questions, again, have no answers. In any event, she devised a plan where she would take her allotted ration of bread and hide it in her bunk until Pesach was over. Imagine, she would then have enough pieces of bread to sustain her for a while, a veritable feast. She later told me she used to have dreams of loaves of bread floating around her and she never got over her need to feed anyone who was hungry. Much to her disbelief, when Pesach was finally over she realized that her precious bread had been stolen. Her reaction was super human, she said to me, “Ruchala, someone must have needed it far more than I did, so I am sure G-D led them right to it”. I feel compelled to relate a post, posted by our nephew Rabbi Avrohom M. Alter, (it’s really a postscript to the story) that I saw recently. Some Rebbe in the camps, who is to date, anonymous, composed a heartrending tefilla to Hashem asking His forgiveness that he and his fellow Jews would be eating chametz on Pesach, in order to fulfill the mitzvah of survival: v’chai ba”hem v’shelo yamut ba’hem. It made me cry, had it been me, I know, that I would have probably eaten, being given the chance, a whole loaf, Pesach or not! My saintly mother, however, did not. This is by no means meant to cast aspersions on all those other “kedoshim”. But, just every once in a great while you come across a simple child from a simple village (who may not even have known of the mitzvah, “V’chai ba-’hem), who nevertheless, reached the loftiest spiritual height; that was my mother a”h. Last year, a few weeks before Pesach, I decided to do something That would be a z’chus for my mother’s neshoma. I contacted Rabbi Shaul Broner and asked him if he, as a representative of Matan B’seser, would distribute funds that I’d collected from family and friends to large families, so that their children would have new shoes for Pesach. I called this project the “ Y’SHOE-AH Foundation” in memory of Chana Bas Yosef. This year I’m starting much earlier. Anyone interested in being part of this project can Call Rabbi Shaul Broner @ (248)968-5646 and designate the funds you wish to donate for the purchase of new children’s shoes for Pesach. by Rabbi Beryl Broyde

PRODUCE FROM ISRAEL is beginning to appear on the market. In addition to issues of Terumos and Maaseros, Israeli fruit may also pose an issue of orla; consult your Rav. Israeli produce commonly found includes tomatoes on the vine, bell peppers (red, yellow and orange), citrus fruit, persimmons, red pomelos and medjoul dates. Carefully check the sticker, bag label or original case of all produce for the country of origin. PASKESZ PREMIUM BELGIAN CHOCOLATE PAREVE HOLOGRAPHIC COINS have been recalled by Paskesz because they may contain minute traces of milk that can cause an allergic reaction in those allergic to milk. One such case has been reported. The label states “Made in a plant that processes products made with milk. This does not affect the product’s Kosher Pareve status.” Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800PASKES0. All DARRELL LEA LIQUORICE products are now OU certified as actual dairy and will no longer be pareve, due to a change in the manufacturing process. Products that have a “Best Before” date of 01 DEC 2014 and onward were manufactured after this change, and are dairy even if the label says pareve. YOPLAIT GREEK and YOPLAIT GREEK 100 YOGURT are now OK Dairy certified, only when bearing the OK-D symbol. Other Yoplait yogurts bearing a plain KD contain gelatin from non-Kosher animal sources and are not recommended. 7-SELECT STEAK LOVER’S FLAVORED POTATO CHIPS, sold in 7-Eleven stores, contains dairy ingredients, as indicated in the allergen statement and ingredient listing, but mistakenly bears a plain OU without the D on some packaging. SWISS MIX manufactured by Barcelona Nut Processing Co. mistakenly bears a Star-K symbol. In fact, it is dairy/non-Cholov Yisroel and should bear the Star-D symbol. AMERICAN FARMER POPPED CORN is available in two pareve varieties, that are labeled OU Pareve, and in two dairy varieties, that are labeled OU Dairy. A 24 pack assortment box, which contains both pareve and dairy varieties, incorrectly bears only a plain OU on the box. The individual bags inside, however, are properly labeled. 26

ORANGE JUICE: Consumers should be aware that many OU certified supermarket brands and other brands of orange juice bear an OU-D, due to dairy equipment, and should not be used together with meat. This includes such brands as Dairy Fresh, Giant Eagle, Kirkland Signature, Save-A-Lot, Stop & Shop and many others. Always check the label for the correct Kosher status. SANTA BARBARA PISTACHIO brand CHOCOLATE TOFFEE PISTACHIOS contains dairy, as indicated in the ingredients, and is certified OU-D. Some labels were mistakenly printed without the D designation. SETTON PROBIOTIC YOGURT TREAT MIX produced by Setton International Foods, Inc., was mistakenly labeled OK Pareve instead of OK Dairy. This product is dairy. HOLIDAY NUT TRAY 5032, produced by Hickory Harvest Foods, was mistakenly labeled with the OK Pareve symbol instead of OK Dairy. This product is dairy. CHEF’S QUALITY NON-DAIRY SOFT SERVE MIX in Vanilla and Chocolate varieties, in 36 lb. cartons, are certified OV-D Dairy and contain actual dairy ingredients, but erroneously bear only a plain OV symbol. NEWLY WEDS FOODS- JAPANESE BREAD CRUMBS, an industrial ingredient, with the product code of B63884 and a Lot Code beginning with MT, states cRc Pareve, but was mistakenly made on dairy equipment. For more information please contact Rabbi Yossie Landa at ylanda@crcweb.org. GARLIC – There have been recent reports of infestation, between the layers of the outer peels and between the inner skin and the cloves. It is recommended not to allow the peels to come in contact with food, and to wash utensils and counters after peeling. The cloves should be rinsed after peeling, and unpeeled cloves should not be used. To be added to the email list for Kashrus Alerts Detroit, send your email address to: kashrusalerts@gmail.com For questions, please leave a message for Rabbi Beryl Broyde at the Vaad Harabbonim Kashrus Information Line 248-559-5005 #103. LEARN TO BURN by Sharon Green TRUE OR FALSE: CARDIOVASCULAR ACTIVITY (exercises that raise your heart rate) BURNS MORE CALORIES THAN STRENGTH TRAINING (using weights). False. Contrary to long-held belief, strength or resistance training is – as new studies show – higher in caloric burn. In one University of Southern Maine study, participants burned as many calories doing 30 minutes of weight training as they did running for the same amount of time. Talk about burning, remarkably, using hand held weights boosts your metabolism for up to 36 hours after you’re finished your workout! It also builds muscle that will further increase your fat-burning potential in the long run. Beware of some “weighty” errors: 1. Improper Form: Prevent injury by having a health or fitness professional guide you in your weight training until you can maintain good form on your own. 2. Fast paced: Protect your joints and posture by slowing down. Depending on the activity, a pretty good rule is: 2 seconds up (contracting, or concentric) and 4 seconds down (eccentric). Weights are not usually paired with speed unless one is training with a coach to become an athlete! Please Note: All said, 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (a day for kids and 3 times a week for the rest of us) is recommended for maintaining a healthy heart. Of course, physical activity should be performed with the consent of your doctor. Sharon Green is a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine who offers classes/training to individuals of all ages and ability levels. Contact her at (248) 730-6006 or greensharonr@yahoo.com. CPR/AED/First Aid and Insured. 38

Ark of Inclusion RABBI MORDECHAI KAMENETZKY

I

n the portion of Terumah the Jewish nation was tasked to build the Mishkan. Each one of the utensils is specified as to how it should be constructed, its width, its length, and its height. The type of material whether it was gold, silver, or copper, is enumerated and the details of its ornaments are provided. The procedure for the construction of each vessel is preceded by a command stated in the singular form: “And you shall make” “And you shall make a show bread table.” “And you shall make a Menorah.” “And you shall make an Altar.” The command is directed toward Moshe to delegate the construction. The Aron Kodesh, the Holy Ark is different. Its command is not stated in the singular form, rather in the plural. The Torah does not say and you shall make a Holy Ark, it states, “And they shall make a Holy Ark.” The commentaries ask, why was the command to build the Ark the only one that was given to a group? In a small shul in Yerushalayim, a daily Daf HaYomi shiur (Talmudic folio class) was held each morning before Shacharis. An elderly Russian immigrant attended the shiur. Quiet as he was, his behavior in the shiur intrigued the lecturer. He would never ask a thing. Often he would nod off. Sometimes, when the Rabbi quoted a particular Talmudic sage, the old man’s face would light up - especially when the Rabbi mentioned an opinion from a obscure Talmudic personality. This behavior continued throughout the summer. Always quiet, the man would sometimes nod off, and at other times he would perk up. Then winter came. The group of men would gather around the table in the frigid mornings huddled close as they would warm to the strains of the Talmud and the straining heater in the old synagogue. The old man never missed a class. One morning a rare snow blanketed Jerusalem. No one showed up to the shiur except the Rabbi and the elderly Russian Jew. Instead of giving his usual lecture, the

42

Rabbi decided he would ask the old Jew a little bit about himself. “Tell me,” he inquired, “I watch you as I say my shiur. Sometimes you look intrigued but at other times you seem totally disinterested. The trouble is I would like to make the shiur more interesting for you during its entirety, but I can’t seem to make out what perks you up and makes you doze?” The old man smiled. “I never had a Jewish education. I can barely read Hebrew. I do not come to the shiur for the same reasons that the other men come.” He paused as his eyes pondered his past. “You see, I was a soldier in the Red Army during World War II. Every day our commander would herd us into a room and put a gun to our heads. He commanded us to recite the names of every member of the Politburo. And we did. We learned those names backwards and forward. I come to this class to hear the names of every rabbi in the Talmud. If I cannot learn at least I will know the names of all the great sages! “That.” he smiled “is my Daf HaYomi!” Although the show bread table, the Menorah, and the Altar can be constructed by individuals -- the Ark that holds the Torah is different. One man cannot make it alone. It must be a communal effort. Just as the Torah cannot be learned by one man alone, its Ark cannot be built by an individual either. The Torah is given for everyone to learn and to experience - each one according to his or her own level and ability. Lighting a Menorah is a clear-cut ritual delegated to the Kohain. The Altar is used for the sacrifices brought by the kohanim. The Torah is for everybody. And each individual has his own Shas and Daf HaYomi. Each person has his share in Toras Yisrael. Everyone extracts something holy from the Torah. To some it may be extrapolative halachic theory, while for others it may be the refinement of character. And still for others it may be the names of Abayai and Rava. Reprinted with permission from www.torah.org.
