Winter Preparedness Tips Make sure that your car is ready to take on the snow, ice, and cold  



Tires Check the tire pressure and wear on your current tires, and your spare. Bald tires are dangerous in slippery conditions. Battery Batteries die more frequently in the winter. Older batteries are particularly susceptible. Be proactive, get your battery tested for free at local O'Reilly, AutoZone, and many tire stores. Antifreeze Antifreeze, also known as coolant, is essential for your engine in the winter. It works to keep it from freezing. Always make sure that your coolant levels are full. Be careful to never open the coolant cap until the engine has cooled from running. Windshield Wipers In the winter your wipers need to be in tip-top shape in order to keep your windshield free of snow, ice, and other dirt that gets kicked up from the road. AutoZone and O’Reilly Auto Parts will install wipers for free, even in the cold. Washer fluid Always keep wiper fluid topped off. Salt and sand from the roads can get kicked up onto your windshield making it hard to see. We recommend keeping an extra bottle of fluid in your car. Lights Make sure that all of your exterior lights are properly functioning. Remember to clear snow and ice off of your lights before hitting the road. Gasoline level Try to keep your tank at least half full. This helps keep accumulated water from freezing inside of your fuel pump and also allows you to keep your car on and the heat running if you get stuck. Defroster and Heat Make sure to check that both of these systems are properly working in your vehicle before weather conditions make them a necessity. Did you know that your AC system is used in the winter to remove moisture and fog from the windshield? Winter Supplies Make sure that you have in your vehicle: Scraper/Brush, Flashlight, Water bottle and a few nonperishable snacks, Cell phone charger, Gloves, and a Blanket. 

Many seniors' biggest worry is falls. The risk of falling - and fall-related problems- rises with age. However, many falls can be prevented. Balance challenging activities are superior to anything else in helping people prevent falls. Countless studies indicate that there are 4 exercises to help improve balance and reduce the risk of falling. Here are 2: (Stay tuned for the next 2!) 1. Tandem Stance: Stand in a heel to toe position holding onto a stable object like a countertop. Try to let go. The more you practice, the better you'll get. Goal: stand for about 20 seconds. Bending knees slightly helps to engage more abdominal muscles which in turn will aid in control. 2. Single Leg Stance: While holding kitchen counter, lift a leg up, bending your knee. Shift weight over the leg you're standing on. If you're not shifting, you cannot perform this exercise. Once your weight is over the stance leg, let go. Goal: 20 seconds on each leg. Repeat over and over .

INGREDIENTS:

4 large corn on the cob or 1 lb frozen corn 4 tsp olive oil 2 Tbsp butter 2 garlic cloves , minced 1 large red chili or bell pepper, diced 1 large green pepper, diced 1 red onion , finely chopped 8 oz shredded Monterey Jack cheese (or cheddar, Pepper Jack, Gruyere, Provolone or Swiss) or other cheese of choice 1 jalapeno, finely chopped 8 oz cream cheese , softened 3/4 cup sour cream 3/4 cup mayonnaise 3/4 tsp salt 4 oz can green chilies, chopped 3 shallots or scallions, finely sliced

GARNISHES, OPTIONAL: Coriander or cilantro , chopped Green chilies or jalapeño , sliced Sautéed corn

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 320°F. Cut the corn off the cob. If using frozen corn, no need to thaw. Melt 1 tbsp butter then add 2 tsp oil in a skillet over high heat. Add half the corn and half the garlic. Cook, stirring (or tossing!) for 3 minutes or until corn is golden (golden = better flavor). Transfer corn to bowl, repeat with remaining corn. If the skillet looks dry, add a touch of oil. Add peppers and onion, cook for 2 minutes until softened. Add to bowl with corn. Add half the cheese into the bowl, then all the remaining ingredients. Mix, transfer to baking dish. Top with remaining cheese. Bake 30 minutes or until golden and bubbly on top. Top with garnishes if desired. Serve hot with corn chips! Chanukah
