A service of the COR of Greater Detroit FERRARA CANDIES - LEMONHEAD, RED HOTS, ATOMIC FIREBALL, ETC. - Due to changes in manufacturing, some varieties of Ferrara candies will no longer be certified by UMK. Packages bearing the UMK symbol are still certified.

Please make sure to check each package for the UMK symbol WONKA GRAPE FLAVOR LAFFY TAFFY is missing the OU symbol on some of the smaller pieces (size 3 x 7/8 x 1/4), but is still OU certified even without the symbol. - - Please note that this applies only to the regular taffy type candy.

“Laffy Taffy flavored JELLY BEANS” are not OU certified, and do not bear an OU. KOSHER / NON-KOSHER CANDY ASSORTMENTS: Many “Variety” or “Party Mix” bags of assorted individually wrapped candies now in stores contain a mixture of Kosher and non-Kosher candies. The Kashrus status of each type should be carefully checked.

Consumers should be aware, however, that some of these assortments bear an OU or OU-D on the back of the bag after the ingredient listings of the Kosher varieties. This has led to much confusion among shoppers who did not discern that the OU symbol refers only to that particular variety, and not to the entire contents of the bag. We thank Rabbi Yosef Wikler of Kashrus Magazine for bringing this to the attention of the public, and showing the importance of a policy not to allow a Kashrus symbol on a package that contains Kosher and non-Kosher.

Following are some examples of these assortments currently in stores: • Hershey - Snack Size Jolly Rancher/Twizzlers Bites, Party Mix, and Spring Sweet Treats (50 count & 110 count) assortments all contain non-Kosher Jolly Rancher items.

[The first two bear a small disclaimer on the back, “This bag contains kosher and non-kosher items.”]

• Mars - Variety assortments (21 oz., 110 pieces & 175 pieces) contain non-Kosher Starburst and Skittles items.

CREAM OF WHEAT CINNABON INSTANT TO-GO CUPS contain sodium caseinate, a dairy ingredient, but were mistakenly labeled with a plain OK symbol without the D. DANNON STRAWBERRY FLAVOR NONFAT YOGURT and STRAWBERRY BANANA FLAVOR NONFAT YOGURT bear an unauthorized OU symbol on some containers. These products are not OU certified CEDAR brand frozen ITALIAN BLEND bears an unauthorized MK symbol.

NABISCO new CINNAMON BUN OREO SANDWICH COOKIES are certified OU Dairy, even though there is no OU symbol currently on the label.

FINISH brand JET DRY RINSE AID is OU certified, even if no OU appears on the label. cRc LIQUOR LIST UPDATE: The cRc has announced that in the March 18, 2016 Yated Ne’eman feature of “What’s New in Kashrus” on page 166, there was a column shift error where thirteen items that should have been listed in the “Newly Non-Recommended” list were inadvertently listed in the “Newly Recommended” list. These items start from “Napa Vodka” and end with “Yellow Spot Irish Whiskey”. The correct full list can be found at www.crcweb.org/LiquorList.pdf BICERIN LIQUEURS: The OU certifies Bicerin Originale Di Giandujotto Liqueur and Bicerin Original White Liqueur only when bearing the OU symbol. Miniature bottles of these products are currently being sold in stores without the OU symbol. The OU does not certify those miniature bottles, and consumers should not assume that they are Kosher certified products.

SNAPPLE REMINDER: Although most Snapple products are OK certified, some are not. Snapple FRUIT PUNCH and Snapple CRANBERRY RASPBERRY Juice Drinks are not Kosher and do not bear an OK. There may also be other Snapple varieties that are not certified, plus some that may be dairy or dairy equipment. Each bottle or can should be checked carefully for the OK symbol and its Pareve / Dairy status. Care should also be taken when purchasing variety packs, which may contain a mixture of Kosher and nonKosher varieties.

SWISS MISS CHOCOLATE FLAVOR HOT COCOA MIX bears OK-D certification only on three sizes: 28.5 oz. canister, 2 lbs. (32 oz.) for vending machines, and 1.75 Lbs. (28 oz.) for vending machines. Other sizes, including single serve envelopes, are not certified and do not bear OK-D. QUAKER GLUTEN FREE INSTANT OATMEAL in Original and Maple & Brown Sugar varieties is certified OU Pareve, even if no OU appears on the label..

Wow, good for you! In that case, you may want a refresher on how many repetitions and sets is ideal to reach your fitness goals. Whether youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re using your body weight, (ex., lunges), or hand held weights, (ex., triceps extensions), hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a guideline to gradually work towards: For strength and power, three sets of 6 reps. For general muscle growth and toning, three sets of 6-12 reps. If youâ&#x20AC;şre striving for muscle endurance, two to three sets of 12 or more reps. Rest periods are recommended between sets, during which you can march or jog at an even pace for about 30 seconds. Remember, if something doesnâ&#x20AC;şt feel right, stop and check with a fitness expert.

It is a unique organization run by volunteers. There is no overhead. Every mailer, ad or program is sponsored. So 100% of your donation goes directly to help someone in need.

What is Matan Bseter Detroit? It is the Detroit Jewish Community's emergency relief fund for people in need. What is an emergency? It depends. We have people who come XS YW MR RIIH SJ EWWMWXERGI IZIR XLSYKL XLI] LEZI E NSF ERH EVI EFPI XS WXE] EžSEX ERH then one day there is illness or their car, their mode of transportation to go to work, breaks down and they need help. Sometimes people are forced to make hard decisions: pay for medicine or the mortgage? Pay for food or electricity? So when they get an eviction notice or an electricity shut down, we step in and help temporarily until a more permanent solution is worked out. The recipients are anonymous but I like to know where I invest my money. Can you tell me more? Some of the recipients may be your friend, your neighbor.

We divulge very little information because this is a small town and we want to avoid embarrassing anyone. But you are indeed correct, this is a sure investment and it will insure many dividends in Shomayim. So without giving names or particulars, can you tell me why I should prioritize MBD over other Tzedakas? MBD helps individuals or families in our town. If we don't help them, who will? No one is collecting for them in Lakewood or Jerusalem. We are their lifeline. It is also to follow the precept: aniyei ircha kodmin. When you give XS 1&( ]SY EVI JYP½PPMRK XLEX EHHMXMSREP QMX^ZEL Why is your tzedakah fund different from others? Firstly, we service members from all segments of the Orthodox community regardless of where they daven, send their kids to school. We are everyone's tzedakah. Secondly, we have B"H Yad Ezra and Tomchei Shabbos for food related needs. Rabbi's funds that are used at the discretion of each community. But we are a central Tzedaka to help for nonfood related expenses. We are also in the business of helping others since 1989. So if you have questions, ask us, we may be able to help . We are likely to have encountered the same universal problems before. I gave once but you guys keep coming back for more.

Why? We keep sending letters because the need is great and constant. We give Matanos La'evyonim and then a month later, Pesach comes around and we cannot turn away people in great need and say, we already helped you this year. Everyone is asking me for money and I have to give to everyone equally. How can you ask me to prioritize? Firstly, you WLSYPH RSX KMZI XS IZIV]SRI IUYEPP] 8LI ,EPEGLSW SJ 8^IHEOE EVI ZIV] WTIGM½G MR TVMSVMXM^ing the way one distributes his maaser and tzedakah. We help the struggling individuals and families of our town. It behooves us, Detroiters, to ensure that the family facing foreclosure in our backyard is helped before giving to myriads of individuals and institutions in other cities. Also our organization is endorsed by all the Rabbonim of the city. Talk to your LOR ERH [I EVI GSR½HIRX XLEX XLI] [MPP IRHSVWI SYV GEYWI When is the greatest need? We send a letter 3 times a year, in Elul in anticipation of the holidays of Tishrei, around Chanukah and before Purim/Pesach. However, the need is constant and we are grateful for people who pledge monthly. It allows us to know that money is coming in and we can help more effectively. I'd love to help but I dont make a lot of money. You don't have to give large sums of money to make a difference. Maybe you can pledge $10, 18, 50 a month? If everyone in the community pledges a monthly donation out of their Maaser, we will not have to turn away anyone. I don't even have $18 to give, what do you suggest? We can't tell you what to do. But here are heartwarming stories: One family brought Rabbi Broner a check and said, last night we were supposed to have pizza but instead we had noodles and here is the money we would have spent. Children came with a bag of coins and said they WSPH PIQSREHI SR E WXVIIX GSVRIV XS FIRI½X 1&( ;I LEZI WTIEOIVW [LS WYKKIWX HSREXMRK to MBD. People buy tribute cards and Purim cards. Symbolism Over Substance By: Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

The entire Seder ceremony is replete with symbolic gestures. We drink four cups of wine to represent four Biblical expressions of redemption. We dip and lean like kings to represent freedom, and eat bitter herbs to remind us about the bitter slavery. We also eat other symbolic foods that portray our Egyptian bondage: salt water to remember tears, and charoses, a mixture of apples, nuts and wine that looks like mortar, to remind us of the laborious years in Egypt.

The service is truly filled with symbolism - some direct, and some seemingly far-fetched - and all the symbols are meant to remind us of the slavery we endured centuries ago. But, why not take a direct approach? There are overt ways to declare our gratitude, and there are more immediate ways to mark the celebration. Why don’t we just recite the four expressions of redemption as part of the liturgy instead of drinking four cups of wine to symbolize them? Why don’t we actually place mortar on the table (problem of muktzeh not withstanding) instead of making a concoction to represent it? And instead of reminding ourselves of backbreaking work by eating horseradish, why not lift heavy boxes?

A Jewish intellectual in post-war England approached Rabbi Yechezkel Abramsky, who headed the London Beth Din, with a cynical question: “In reviewing our Hagadah service,” he sniped, “I was shocked at the insertion of , ‘Who Knows One’, a childish nursery rhyme, at the end. Why would the sages put a silly rhyme - ‘One is Hashem, two are the Tablets, three are the fathers,’ and so on, at the end of the solemn, intellectual Seder night service? It is very unbecoming!”

Rabbi Abramsky was not shaken. “If you really want to understand the depth of that song, then you must travel north to the town of Gateshead. There you will find a saintly Jew, Reb Elya Lopian. I want you to discuss the meaning of every aspect of life with him. Ask him what are the meaning of the sea and fish, ask him what is the meaning of the sun and the moon. Then ask him what is the meaning of one, of six, of eleven and so on.”

The philosopher was very intrigued. He traveled to Gateshead and located the Yeshiva at which Reb Elya served as the Mashgiach (spiritual advisor). He was led into the room where a saintly looking man greeted him warmly.

“Rabbi, I have many questions,” the skeptical philosopher began. “What is the meaning of life?” “What is the essence of the stars?”

Rabbi Lopian dealt with each question with patience, depth, and a remarkable clarity. Then the man threw out the baited question. “What is the meaning of the number one?”

Rabbi Lopian’s face brightened, his eyes widened, and a broad smile spread across his face. “The meaning of one?” he repeated. “You would like to know the meaning of one? One is Hashem in the heaven and the earth!”

The man was shocked. “What about the depth of the numeral five?”

“Five?” repeated the sage. Why five has tremendous symbolism! It represents the foundation of Judaism - the Five Books of Moses!” The rabbi then went on to explain the mystical connotations that are represented by the number five, and exactly how each Book of the Torah symbolizes a component of the sum.

The man left with a new approach and attitude toward the most simple of our rituals.

At the Seder, we train ourselves to find new meaning in the simple things in life. We teach ourselves to view the seemingly mundane with historical and even spiritual significance. We should remember that when Moshe saw a burning yet non-consumed bush, he realized that his nation is similar - constantly persecuted and harassed, yet never consumed. At our Seder, we view horseradish not as a condiment for gefilte fish, but as representative of our suffering. The Matzoh is no longer a low-fat cracker, but symbolizes the hardships of exile and the speed of our redemption. In addition, we finish the Seder with a simple song that reminds everyone at the Seder, next time you ask, “who’s number one?” don’t accept the answer: the New York Yankees or the Chicago Bulls - think on a higher plane! One is Hashem in the heaven and the earth!
