PERFECT YOUR SQUAT

Sharon Green, CPT (248) 730-6006 greenfit613@gmail.com

Personal trainer, group fitness, and senior fitness specialist.

The best thing about squats is that anyone can do them! They work the large muscle groups in your lower body, as well as your core (tummy) and back. Squats are considered one of the best exercises for building overall functional strength.

Tips for Proper Form

• With feet shoulder width apart, keep chest high (as if you're showing your name tag)

• Push hips back as if reaching for a far-away stool (if you can't see your toes, your hips need to reach further back)

• Weight in heels: You can wiggle your toes

• Knees apart: don’t collapse inward

Begin with 2-3 sets of 8-12 squats per day and work up from there, adding depth and holding a heavy weight as you progress. (beginners keep a chair in front of you to hold onto for support, start shallow adding more squat depth as you progress).

PESACH SHOPPING NOTICE

Always check each individual label for Pesach certification. Non-Pesach items often have almost identical looking labels, and are sometimes inadvertently mixed in with Pesach items and placed in the Pesach section. Check also for possible Kitniyos or Matzoh Ashira status.

As advised by Rabbi Asher Eisenberger, at the time of bedikas chometz one person should be designated to go through the pantry, refrigerator, etc. to check that all products purchased for Pesach are in fact Kosher for Pesach and bear any required marking.

FOLGERS DECAFFEINATED COFFEE is no longer approved for Pesach. Product remaining from last Pesach is acceptable.

NESCAFE TASTER'S CHOICE DECAF INSTANT COFFEE with an OU, made in the U.S. and distributed by Nestle USA, is not acceptable for Pesach. Only the regular unflavored type with caffeine is acceptable for Pesach. A Kosher Information website and email that states to the contrary is incorrect.

PRAIRIE’S CHOICE NON GMO BACKYARD CHICKEN LAYER FEED, which is listed in the Star-K Pesach Pet Food Guide as suitable for chickens, has changed its formulation and now contains chometz as noted on the ingredient panel. It should not be used on Pesach and should be sold with the chometz.

SPINACH POTATO NEST BITES

4 large Yukon Gold Potatoes

1 tsp salt

¼-½ tsp pepper

2½ tsp garlic powder

2½ tsp onion powder

Preheat oven at 400ºF

4 tsp avocado oil

Cooking Spray

4 cups of frozen spinach, thawed (yields 2 cups cooked)

4 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Shred the potatoes, add ½ teaspoon of salt, mix well, and let them sit in a colander with a bowl under it for 20 minutes.

In a large skillet, sauté spinach in olive oil. Season with 2 tsp garlic powder, 2 tsp onion powder, and ½ tsp salt. Cook until most of the water has evaporated, 6-8 minutes. Set aside. Squeeze as much water out of the grated potatoes as you can. Season with ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp onion powder, ½ tsp pepper. Add 4 tsp vegetable oil and mix well.

Generously spray a 12-muffin tin pan with cooking spray. Arrange grated potatoes into each muffin cup, pressing against the bottom and up the sides.

Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until they start to brown slightly. Remove from the oven and set aside.

In a medium-sized bowl, beat the eggs, add a pinch of salt and spinach, and mix until well combined.

Evenly spoon spinach in each potato nest.

Bake for 10 minutes or until egg is cooked.

Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly. Carefully unmold each potato nest using a butter knife around the edges of the nest. Makes 12 potato nests
