Food for Thought RABBI YEHUDAH PRERO

T

here is a widespread custom that during Adar, people make and bakers bake three cornered filled cookies called Hamantashen. One year, on the day before Purim, Rav Yaakov Berlin, the father of the famous Rabbi Naftoli Berlin (the Netziv), went to the market to purchase this special treat in honor of Purim. He went from baker to baker, but no Hamantashen were to be found. He found this situation to be quite odd, and he therefore asked one of the bakers why no one had any Hamantashen. He was informed that the year had been one of a serious drought. The price of flour skyrocketed, and bakers were only able to afford flour for the Shabbos challah. Flour for any other purpose, including Hamantashen, was not even considered because it was so expensive. As soon as Rav Berlin heard this, he immediately called for all the city’s bakers. Once they were assembled he presented them with a large sum of money. Rav Berlin told them that the money was to be used to purchase flour so that they could bake Hamantashen. Why did Rav Berlin feel so strongly about having Hamantashen available? He explained that these special cookies had for generations been consumed during Adar. Being that it was a long standing tradition to have Hamantashen, and it is forbidden to annul customs, Hamantashen must be baked. Rav Berlin then explained how Hamantashen got their name. In Megillas 16

MarCH 2014

Esther, we find that Achashverosh had never rewarded Mordechai for his role in saving the king from a plotted assassination. However, one night, “the sleep of the king was disturbed.” On that night, Achashverosh was reminded that Mordechai had not been rewarded, and he ordered Haman to parade Mordechai around in royal fashion. This marked the beginning of the salvation of the Jews from the murderous scheme of Haman. The Yalkut Shimoni tells us that Achashverosh was not the only one who had his slumber disturbed that night. On that night, the “slumber” of our three forefathers Abraham, Yitzchok, and Yaakov was disturbed because of the evil that was to befall the Jews. They pleaded with G-d to spare the Jewish people from destruction. In the merit of the forefathers, Haman’s power weakened. When combined with the prayers and repentance of the nation, this merit helped saved the people from destruction. The word for “weaken” in Hebrew is “Tash.” Thus, the three cornered cookie, with each corner representing one forefather, is named “Haman tash,” “Haman was weakened.” The presence of this highly symbolic cookie was a long standing custom, and therefore, Rav Berlin explained, the custom must continue. When we munch on our Hamantashen, we should make sure that we properly digest the reminder contained within! Reprinted with permission www.torah.org. To Advertise 773.336.8225

Rabbi Doniel Neustadt, Yoshev Rosh, Vaad Harabbonim of Detroit cor@cordetroit.com THE MITZVAH OF MISHLOACH MANOS

Q A

Are married women and adult children obligated to send mishloach manos?

The obligation to send mishloach manos rests upon the individual; hence, a married woman is not exempted by her husband’s mishloach manos. A husband and a wife may, however, send mishloach manos together, as long as the mishloach manos is “double sized”, i.e., double the amount that either spouse would have sent individually. Some Rabbis hold that children over 13 — even those who are being supported by their parents — are obligated to send their own mishloach manos, while others exempt them since they do not own anything in their own right. Parents should educate their minor children in the correct performance of mishloach manos just as they do with every other mitzvah.

Q A

May mishloach manos be sent to a mourner?

The custom is that mishloach manos are not sent to a mourner during the year of mourning for his parents, or during the thirty days of mourning for other relatives. A mourner who receives mishloach manos need not return them, and the sender fulfills his mitzvah by sending those mishloach manos. It is permitted for a woman to send mishloach manos to the wife of a mourner or for a man to send to the husband of a mourner. While a mourner — even if he is in the middle of shivah — must send mishloach manos, he should refrain from sending “simchah items,” e.g., items that elicit laughter and merriment.

Q A

What is the proper amount and type of food that should be sent for mishloach manos?

Mishloach manos can be any combination of two kinds of food, or one food and one drink, or two kinds of drink. Although two pieces of the same food are considered as one food, the top (white meat) and bottom (dark meat) parts of a chicken are considered two kinds of food. Some Rabbis specify that the foods be ready to eat and require no further cooking, while others allow even uncooked foods to be sent. Ideally, one should send foods which could be eaten at the seudas Purim. Moreover, one does not fulfill the mitzvah properly if all he sends is a small piece of food, etc. since manos is defined as a portion which is considered worthy of serving others. Some Rabbis suggest that the minimum amount of mishloach manos is a meal’s worth, about 6-7 fl. oz. of food. Other rabbis require that one send no less of a meal (in volume) than one would normally serve a guest. A wealthy person who sends inexpensive items of food does not fulfill the mitzvah properly, for in order for mishloach manos to be considered as an expression of friendship, its cost must be relative to the sender’s wealth. Similarly, one who sends inexpensive food items to a wealthy person does not fulfill the mitzvah properly, since such items are worthless in his eyes and unappreciated by him.
