A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT AND CEO Improving Social, Academic and Health Equity is at the forefront of all efforts and impacts.

Dear JFS Friends,

We hope this Report to the Community finds you and your families in good health. What an unprecedented year 2020 has been. At JFS, we began the year with a major transition in leadership due to the retirement of

long-standing CEO Marc Jacobs. At the same time, we restructured the executive leadership team in order to

enhance services to accelerate social, academic, and health equity. Little did we know in January what the months ahead would bring.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, JFS once again showed its strategic value to the community, due to our continued ability to be nimble, innovative, and able to pivot quickly to respond to emergent needs. JFS’ response to the

pandemic has been enormous. The pictures you see on the top of this page and throughout the report tell a story of JFS becoming the safety net for thousands of individuals in the community when no government assistance

existed in an accessible and expedient fashion. JFS’ usual 5,000 individuals served per year drastically increased

40% to over 7,000, as we worked collaboratively with CJP and other partner organizations to ensure no individual or family was left behind. Despite the loss, anxiety, and overall grief the pandemic has brought to our community,

we have been amazed by the generosity, courage, and desire to help from donors, supporters, partners, volunteers, and staff. The cover picture says it all. Jewish students organizing and stuffing backpacks for children in need in Metrowest. We thank them and all of those who have made our past, current, and future response possible.

The pictures on this letterhead illustrate the profile of many of our most vulnerable clients. Maria and her son

Pablo. Maria is a hard-working immigrant single mother who became jobless due to the pandemic. She was not

eligible for public benefits. JFS, through some generous foundation donors, kept a roof over their heads, provided basic needs, and kept them safe.

The second picture depicts bags of groceries and toiletries/hygiene products we have distributed since March at

the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Framingham. To date, we have distributed over 60,000 meals and over 80,000 units of basic-needs products. We have also distributed educational materials for students at home, and information translated into Spanish and Portuguese to keep the immigrant community informed of important health access and pandemic updates.

Cognizant of their high-risk status for COVID-19, caring for isolated, older adults in our Jewish and broader community has remained a priority. JFS has delivered some 8,000 meals and other essential items to

these vulnerable community members, and JFS will continue to be there for them as we weather this pandemic storm.

As we look into 2021, JFS is well positioned to continue to provide assistance specifically to three core groups: vulnerable immigrant families with young children, the Jewish community, and isolated older adults. JFS has taken steps to remain financially stable in order to focus on the most at-risk

populations in Metrowest. JFS will commence a five-year strategic planning process in 2021, and we will be

looking for input from you, our trusted supporters, partners, and friends. We will ask you to join and assist us in identifying how we can be of service to the community in the most relevant and impactful manner.

JFS will continue to strive to reduce poverty, enable older adults to remain safe and independent, enhance

equity within the immigrant community, and be a leader and community mobilizer of Tikkun Olam (efforts to repair the world and community). We do all this important work by harnessing the power of volunteers and collaborative partnerships. JFS will continue to increase its role as a community

convener, bringing faith and non-profit organizations together to forge a future agenda of good. We recently formed a Committee on Anti-Racism and Fighting Antisemitism to tackle systemic hate in our community and to ensure collaborative, action-based efforts in Metrowest.

We are incredibly fortunate to have a Board of Directors that is committed to the work of JFS. Our board members continually look for new and innovative ways to go beyond governance and be actively

involved in both problem solving and accelerating initiatives. You will start seeing an increase in marketing and communications as the board focuses on JFS’ branding and community-wide awareness, with the goal that JFS will no longer be known as “the best kept secret in greater Boston.”

JFS continues to be a great investment for social good and has a multi-year rating in Charity Navigator of 4

Stars. JFS is in the top 1% of over 9,000 non-profits rated by Charity Navigator. We thank our current donors and supporters, and invite others to join us as your involvement and generosity make JFS’ collective impact possible.

Finally, we want to thank our amazing professional staff and volunteers that have gone beyond the

call of duty in responding to the needs of our client families during the pandemic. They are courageous and our heroes.

Fighting to reduce poverty in the Jewish community Before COVID-19, each day case managers in the Family Assistance program responded to urgent calls from individuals and families in financial crisis and worked with them to stabilize and move towards self-sufficiency. As the pandemic has unfolded and jobs have been lost due to health concerns or business shutdowns, calls for help have drastically increased. While the world holds its breath waiting for a vaccine, JFS is holding on to hope, providing critical financial and emotional support and ensuring that basic needs are being met.

Programs Include: Intensive Case Management, Emergency Financial Assistance, Lucy and Joe Press Food Pantry, Holiday Assistance, Information and Referral, Ready for Success Employment Support

Social, Educational and Supportive Programs

Improving safety, social engagement and access to medical care for frail older adults Most vulnerable to the health implications of COVID-19, frail and low-income older adults have been the hardest hit by the pandemic.

As supportive community programs were suddenly cancelled, many found themselves with little access to the outside world. JFS has identified those most at-risk and is providing life-saving services, ensuring no one falls through the cracks.

Programs Include: Case Management, Meal Deliveries, Wellness Checks, Healthy Aging, Healthy Partners, Allies in Aging, Virtual Support Groups, Patient Navigator, LGBT+ Ally Navigator Initiative, Warm Connectors, Homecare, Memory Café, Kesher, English as a Second Language (ESL)

Comprehensive Assistance

Advancing equity and providing safety, hope and opportunity to immigrant children and families Low wages, language barriers, a hostile political landscape and limited experience with American financial, legal and educational systems are some of the challenges faced by today’s immigrant families. During the long months of the pandemic as jobs disappeared, schools and childcare services closed and community programs ceased, many of these vulnerable families have struggled desperately, unable to pay their bills and keep their children safe and healthy. JFS has quickly responded, providing wrap around assistance that supports the financial, academic and social needs of those most at risk, sustaining them through catastrophic uncertainty.

Programs Include: Basic Needs Distributions; Case Management, Financial Assistance, Healthy Harvest, Weekend Nutrition, Children’s Clothing Closet; Resettlement and Asylee Services, Employment Support, ESL; Pathways to Academic Growth, Empowerment and Success, All Stars, STEAM Academy, Homework Dinners, Pathways to College Success; Information and Referral

Fighting to reduce poverty in the Jewish community

Donations to the Lucy and Joe Press Food Pantry provide emergency assistance to meet basic nutritional needs

For those already struggling to make ends meet, COVID-19 has pushed many into a tailspin of financial crisis as reductions in income and the suspension of services has led to diminishing resources and escalating debt. For others who have lost loved ones, the costs have been beyond calculation.

As desperate calls for help have increased, JFS has quickly responded, pivoting to meet the most urgent of needs.

In partnership with CJP, Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) and other local agencies, Family Assistance Network case managers are providing hope and relief - from intensive case management and emergency financial

assistance, to meal deliveries and wellness checks - that address immediate concerns and establish a foundation for the future, ensuring our community has the critical financial and emotional support needed to persevere through these difficult days.

Improving safety, social engagement and access to medical care for frail older adults

When the unfolding pandemic led to stay-at-home advisories and service suspensions, many frail and isolated older adults were trapped in their homes with no access to support or critical supplies such as food and toiletries.

Through collaborative partnerships with CJP, the Cummings Foundation, the Rita J. & Stanley H. Kaplan Family Foundation, Sanofi Genzyme, Baypath Elder Services, 2Life Communities, the Framingham Housing Authority, synagogues, senior centers and other community organizations, JFS has identified our neighbors most at-risk and retooled service delivery to ensure that these vulnerable older adults have the assistance they need to remain safe and healthy through the crisis.

COMPREHENSIVE INTEGRATED ASSISTANCE

Advancing equity and providing safety, hope and opportunity to immigrant children and families

The pandemic has had a devastating impact on the immigrant community. Already facing numerous obstacles to success - including language barriers, limited experience with American legal, financial and educational systems and a hostile federal administration – these community members have been hit particularly hard by COVID-19 school and childcare closings and business shutdowns. Those who were barely making ends meet are now barely surviving.

In collaboration with a vast network of community partners and funders, JFS is taking a multi-faceted approach to advancing equity in the immigrant community:

• Family Assistance:

2019 JFS volunteers advance academic equity at MassBay Community College

○ Weekly distributions: 60,000+ meals and 70,000+ personal care items and feminine hygiene products distributed through partnerships with Daniel’s Table, Hope and Comfort, Dignity Matters, the Framingham Public School system, Pelham Lifelong Learning Center and other community partners ○ Intensive case management: Working with hundreds, many of them single mothers with young children, to ensure a safe environment and helping them access necessary medical care and maintain lodging to prevent homelessness

○ Seasonal clothing response: Through the Children’s Clothing Closet and partnerships with Operation Warm and other community organizations, youngsters received thousands of items of clothes, shoes, jackets and other items to keep them warm and healthy ○ Education: Health and service materials provided to families in Spanish, Arabic and Portuguese

COMPREHENSIVE INTEGRATED ASSISTANCE continued • Academic: Shifting from school-based programing to supporting remote and hybrid

learning, JFS is working to ensure that students continue to gain traction in educational achievement: ○ Pathways to Academic Growth, Enrichment and Success: 300 mindfulness packets, 300 backpacks of school supplies and over 1,500 books provided to young students in the Framingham Public Schools system through contributions from The Rashi School, the Learning Express, Jodi and Ken Bring, Trinitarian Congregational Church in Wayland, Open Spirit/Nourishing Teachers and others ○ Pathways to College Success: Students in 3 business and marketing classes at MassBay Community College were mentored using virtual technology and 14 first generation undergraduates received one-on-one virtual mentoring to support academic and professional success

• Citizenship: In response to a looming discontinuation of fee discounts and waivers, JFS worked with the Citizenship for New Americans Program (CNAP) to ensure that all eligible candidates met the deadline:

○ 77 citizenship applications submitted, representing 33 countries

With help from JFS citizenship specialists, Rabbi Danny Burkeman takes the oath to become a United States citizen, just in time to vote in the 2020 presidential election

○ 39 individuals assisted with fee waiver applications

○ 28 applicants took the oath to become United States citizens

• Refugee Resettlement: Despite a narrowing of channels through which refugees,

asylees and their families can safely seek sanctuary in the United States, in partnership with HIAS, ORI and JFS of Western Mass, JFS is continuing to work with new arrivals from around the world, providing comprehensive support that includes case management, benefits assistance, English as a Second Language, employment support and financial assistance.

Across the world, social and economic inequalities have exacerbated the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. With values deeply rooted in Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), JFS is bringing together thought partners, diverse resources and critical capacity to a variety of initiatives that empower community members of all ages to join and take action to make our world a better place.

• COVID-19 Relief - addressing the emergency needs of low-income single parent immigrant families, from providing food, personal care items and face masks to preventing homelessness, through assistance provided by funders such as the Shapiro Foundation and the Wolk Family Endowment for Individuals and Families in Distress • Jewish Emergency Management System – providing security awareness and emergency response coordination, training and expertise

• Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Day of Service Projects – empowering volunteers to help those in need

• Jewish Day School Projects – teaching lessons in service, compassion and gratitude • Temple Partnerships – engaging in collaborative programming, advocacy and community member support

MOBILIZING SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTION continued Committee on Anti-Racism and Fighting Antisemitism Announcing the establishment of the Committee on Anti-Racism and Fighting Antisemitism The purpose of this committee will be to develop long term strategies to address hate, discrimination and bigotry in our community in order to accelerate social equity and inclusion in our neighborhoods and across organizations.

The establishment of this community-wide initiative will enable diverse forces to take a united stand against acts of hate and violence when they occur.

VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES that impact and strengthen our community

JFS volunteers have risen to the challenges brought on by the pandemic and are fueling JFS’ efforts to accelerate social equity in our community, even during these most difficult times.

Pivoting from school-based programming to basic needs distributions and from in-class mentoring to virtual sessions, volunteers are ensuring that families and learners have what they need to continue to grow and stay healthy. From face-to-face activities and social groups to wellness checks and meal deliveries; from supporting in-office medical visits to coordinating telehealth appointments, volunteers are informing new intervention models that ensure vulnerable older adults may continue to age in place safely and with dignity. From in-person meetings to video calls, volunteers are providing guidance so that citizenship applicants may continue to pursue their dreams of becoming U.S. citizens.

The JFS Board of Directors is proud to establish the JFS Innovation Fund to honor Marc Jacobs’ retirement and his impact upon JFS and our community.

Two decades ago, Marc was the sole recipient of the CARLISLE Foundation’s 2000 Creative Entrepreneur Award for demonstrated leadership, creativity, vision and selflessness. As Marc said back then, “this award represents the collective body of my and JFS’ work and contribution to the community adds special value.”

Encouraging and cultivating new ideas, incubating new approaches, collecting and analyzing data and demonstrating impacts, creating deep and vibrant partnerships, experimenting with different solutions to accelerate social, academic and health equity are deeply embedded in the JFS culture.

To date, numerous initiatives have emerged, some successful, sustained long term or brought to larger scale, while others did not work but provided valuable lessons.

Marc and JFS have received prestigious social justice leadership awards as a by-product of taking courageous paths where others stepped back.

Dreaming and imagining, with solid research and design will be at its forefront.

JFS will have “test kitchens” encouraging a next generation of young leadership (both from within and from outside JFS) to bring their own creative and entrepreneurial spark to help build a kinder, stronger community and they will be encouraged and supported by seasoned mentors.

The JFS Innovation Fund will be a catalyst to ensuring continued experimentation and developing new solutions as needs change in our community, and in our society.

It is with great sadness that the board and staff of JFS acknowledge the passing of our dear friends Susan “Sue” Copeland and long-term Board Member and Treasurer Paul Rosenberg.

Sue’s passionate support and generosity for JFS programs supporting vulnerable children and their families will forever remain in our hearts and programmatically help families for many years with her generous legacy gift.

In Paul’s memory, the Rosenberg Family has established the Paul Rosenberg Memorial Fund to honor the over forty years of Paul’s unwavering commitment to those in need in the Metrowest community. This fund will ensure the continued administrative excellence of JFS and fund two yearly collegiate scholarships to students studying business or finance.

As we look forward, legacy giving will play a significant role in assuring that JFS can maintain the level of services needed to have major positive social impact in our Metrowest community.

A legacy gift to JFS can ensure that the agency has the resources necessary to meet future needs, maintain consistent program funding, expand financial resources and respond in the event of an emergency.
