A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT AND CEO Dear JFS Friends, Supporters, and Collaborative Partners, We hope this Annual Report to the Community finds you and your family members in continued good health. JFS is very excited to welcome its new Board President Allison Kates. The Kates family has been involved in many JFS leadership roles in the last two decades and it is an honor to have Allison take the helm. Every President has a priority during their 2-year presidency. Certainly, accomplishing JFS’ important mission and taking care of staff, volunteers and clients is at the top of the list. A secondary priority will be to enhance JFS’ work in supporting mental health and emotional well-being, including increasing access to services, fighting the stigmatization of mental illness and assisting our collaborative partners to advocate for more targeted funding at all levels including Government and Philanthropy.

We continue to answer the call to the most important social issues in our community. In the face of one of our country’s largest challenges - the lack of affordable housing - JFS has commenced an innovative Home-Share initiative that we know will help move the needle locally in a positive direction. The Home-Share pilot matches older adults living in single family homes with other older adults. JFS will also be looking at ways to match immigrant families with older adults needing caregiving, companionship, and assistance with maintaining a safe and affordable home.

We continue to answer the call to help with the resettlement of some of the most vulnerable of immigrants. In 2021 it was the Afghan Evacuees; in 2022 it was the Ukrainian War refugees; and in 2023 it will be the massive wave of Haitian Asylum Seekers coming to the safe haven of Massachusetts. These have been fast and furious operations made possible only because of great partners like The Shapiro Foundation, Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), Chestnut Hill Realty (CHR), local foundations including the MetroWest Health Foundation, Community Foundation for MetroWest, the Sudbury Foundation, the Mabel Louise Riley Foundation, DCU For Kids, TJX, Avidia, the Aliyana Foundation, the Deborah Monroe Noonan Charitable Fund, BJ’s Charitable Foundation, the Eastern Bank Foundation and many others, as well as many faith-based organizations that have stepped up in a major way to help us welcome these families.

The following Report will show the immensely positive impact JFS is making in the community, especially for the most vulnerable and economically challenged families amongst us. You will note this Report is briefer than years past and will only have a few printed copies in keeping with our Climate Change Policy. Note that every program will have a QR code to help you take a deeper dive in our work online.

With everything else that was occurring, 2023 was a year where we continued on our 5 year strategic plan and commences the second phase - program integration/enhancement, upgrading the JFS Brand through MARCOM efforts and continued hiring of highly talented professional staff needed for continued growth and excellence. The Whole Family/Whole Community approach of our new strategic plan involves the increased use of volunteers and continued growth in JFS’ ability to raise funds from local, state, federal governments and philanthropy.

JFS will remain a catalyst for social justice and a community convener and leader in Tikkun Olam (repairing the world); engaging youth and families in helping us do good in the community, fighting racism/antisemitism and other forms of hatred as well as climate change at the local level.

In 2024, JFS will broaden the scope of its Patient Navigator program to increase access to medical care to Veterans and their spouses living in Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC). Home Care and Geriatric Care Management programs continue to expand to respond to the increasing needs of a growing older adult population.

We are beyond excited to announce another new initiative, the JFS Center for Social Innovation. Launched in November 2023, the Center will be a non-profit community asset to help all of us in the social impact space, collaboratively and in coordinated fashion, innovate best practice solutions to the current and future challenges facing our community.

JFS is a great philanthropic investment for social good. JFS has a multi-year 4 Star rating (with a 100% PERFECT SCORE!) in Charity Navigator and is in the top 1% of over 9,000 non-profits rated by Charity Navigator.

Many thanks to our dedicated Board of Directors and our current donors and supporters. We invite others to join us - it is only with your involvement and generosity that JFS’ collective impact is possible. Finally, we want to thank our amazing professional staff and volunteers who have continued to go beyond the call of duty in responding to the needs of our clients and their families. They are our heroes.

JFS 5-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN - 2022-2027 GROWTH AND IMPACT JFS supports the needs of Metrowest older adults, immigrants and Jewish families through a number of mission-centric programs. With a focus on GROWTH and increased IMPACT, the 5-year Strategic Plan guides service integrity across all JFS programs to embrace a Whole Family/Whole Community service approach.

Individuals and families seeking JFS assistance now have access to a comprehensive, cross-program range of services to best meet critical and urgent needs as well as to assist in achieving long-term stability.

In year 2, significant progress has been made in the following focus areas: •

Creative and innovative ways to harness the power of volunteers have been deployed across multiple programs.

New collaborative partnerships have been established to increase access to resources and expertise.

•

To strengthen and widen the social safety net and fill service gaps, case managers are enlisting client family members, friends, neighbors, partner organizations, local government and other stakeholders.

•

Efforts to recruit community-representative Board and staff members, diverse in culture, experience and skillsets, have brought remarkable talent to JFS.

•

Responding to growing community concerns, JFS has taken the lead on Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) initiatives that fight racism and antisemitism and advance social, academic and health equity in our community.

•

Strategic steps, including broadening the donor base and expanding funding-source diversity, are being taken to meet philanthropic goals ensuring future financial sustainability.

The number of calls JFS receives from community members who are facing eviction and homelessness is on the rise.

The Framingham Senior Home-Share Program will increase options for older adults who have space in their home to rent, as well as individuals looking for a place to live that fits within their budget.

Employment Pathways for Refugees from Ukraine

Increasing Affordable Housing Options for Older Adults

As part of The Job Sponsorship Pathway program, which builds on the Biden administration’s Uniting for Ukraine program, JFS has partnered with several local organizations to provide Ukrainian families with end-to-end support along their entire migration journey. JFS’ expertise in resettlement is crucial to this collaboration, where each organization plays a role in helping to reimagine what the resettlement process can look and feel like for newcomers.

The Framingham Senior Home-Share Program is designed to increase housing availability and affordability in Metrowest communities by connecting individuals and families who have extra space in their homes with others looking for affordable housing to rent.

Partners include Bright Horizons, Alight, The Shapiro Foundation, Miles 4 Migrants, Talent Beyond Boundaries, Social Finance and Beth Israel.

A key component of this collaboration is wrap-around support provided by experienced JFS case managers who facilitate home-share applications and prospective home-sharers’ introductions; provide pre- and post-cohabitation coaching; coordinate/facilitate moving; and assist home-sharers with ongoing access to needed services, benefits, etc., to ensure housing stability.

Partners include the City of Framingham Office of Community Development, the Framingham Council on Aging Callahan Center and Nesterly.

Members of the JFS/Rashi Learning and Leadership Council completed a community service project of creating “Welcome Hampers” for JFS clients moving into new homes.

Students were encouraged to use their leadership skills to creatively engage others in collecting supplies for their hampers, such as clothing hangers, shower curtains and cleaning supplies.

Leaders are Not Born—They are Made

Taking Action to Address Climate Change

The JFS-Rashi Learning and Leadership Council convenes Rashi Middle School students to strengthen their leadership skills, execute social services programming, and to lead in Boston Jewish community endeavors and beyond.

In October 2022 the Board of Directors instituted the JFS Climate Change, Environment and Sustainability Policy which highlights key areas where JFS will take action to address these issues at a local level.

Students were selected to serve on the council for one year with quarterly modules. Each module consists of leadership skills training, with a Jewish learning component. During the pilot year, the students participated in Training to be Active Bystanders (TAB) and they increased their understanding of social issues and leadership skills through the “Welcome Hampers” service project.

Recognizing the urgency and committed to reducing our carbon footprint, in July 2023, JFS published a Climate Change Initiatives Report that highlights actions taken to date, including installing energy efficient lighting upgrades, switching to non-toxic cleaning agents and establishing partnerships to support these efforts.

Partners include Adamah, JALSA (Jewish Alliance for Law & Social Action) and Mass Power Forward.

JFS Center for Social Innovation Launched in November 2023, this Center will focus on developing new approaches to social challenges to effectively address increasing needs in the Metrowest community. Made possible, in part, by a generous donation from the estate of Susan Copeland (z”l), this Center will be an asset as part of JFS’ role as community convener with a focus on positive impact.

ANTI-POVERTY INITIATIVE: FIGHTING TO REDUCE POVERTY IN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY Assisting Jewish families struggling to make ends meet is a core mission of JFS, and in the last year JFS has seen more community members facing homelessness than ever before.

Divorce, job loss, and the death of a family member are a few factors that can quickly drive a normally stable household into crisis.

For Family Assistance client Barbara, an older adult who was living in emergency, temporary shelter, finding safe, long-term handicapped-accessible housing was nearly impossible.

Barbara’s case manager worked tirelessly, hunting for vacancies and helping her fill out housing applications, and eventually was able to find her an affordable, one bedroom apartment in a suitable and welcoming community.

Through the JFS and CJP Anti-Poverty Initiative, Manager of Jewish Family Assistance and Healthy Aging, Abrielle Salloway works with clients who are facing homelessness and struggling to find safe and affordable housing, helping them move from crisis to stability.

SOCIAL, EDUCATIONAL AND SUPPORTIVE INITIATIVES: IMPROVING SAFETY, SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT AND ACCESS TO MEDICAL CARE FOR OLDER ADULTS Helping vulnerable older adults live independently in the community is a core mission of JFS. While most of us envision retirement as an enjoyable time, the reality for many is that it is a time of going without – not being able to afford essentials like food, rent or medicine, grieving the loss of companionship or meaningful interaction, suffering reduced functioning due to debilitating health conditions.

JFS provides a wide range of services to ensure these community members have the basics they need, and the care and support they deserve as they navigate the challenges that come with aging.

Services include: Case Management, Meal Deliveries, Wellness Checks, Social/Activity Groups, Health Screenings, Basic Needs Distributions, Holiday Assistance, Virtual Visitors, Geriatric Care Management, Virtual Support Groups, Patient Navigator, Homecare “WE SPEAK CHINESE AND RECEIVED HELP FROM JFS WITH DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS. COMPREHENSIVE, INTEGRATED ASSISTANCE: ADVANCING EQUITY AND PROVIDING SAFETY, HOPE AND OPPORTUNITY TO IMMIGRANT CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Advancing equity for immigrant families in our community is a core mission of JFS. Low wages, language barriers and limited experience with American systems are some of the challenges faced by today’s immigrant families. And, as JFS works to resettle refugees and others fleeing violence and conflict in their home countries, housing is the biggest obstacle.

For war evacuee Ilona, finding suitable housing was the first priority. Escaping the devastation in Ukraine, Ilona, a scientist and science journalist applied to come to the United States with her young son and work with the Heal Ukraine Group. When notice came that she was arriving within a few days, her sponsors called JFS because she needed housing. Working with a network of volunteers and community partners, JFS was able to coordinate housing and services, ensuring that they had the support they needed to build a new life in our welcoming community.

Ilona’s story is just one example of how JFS works to address the financial, academic and social needs of those most at risk. JFS’ innovative approach, which includes basic needs distributions, seasonal/ emergency clothing response, case management, financial assistance, resettlement services, citizenship preparation/application, employment support, English as a Second Language (ESL) and information/referral ensures that they have the basic essentials they need to survive and thrive.

JFS and the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Boston hosted a special screening of the award-winning film “My So Called Enemy” at Hebrew College, Newton to facilitate discussions that foster understanding and acceptance in response to an increase in instances of antisemitism and hate in the community.

With values deeply rooted in Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), JFS serves as an area convener, bringing together thought partners, diverse resources and critical capacity to a variety of initiatives that empower community members of all ages to join and take action to make our world a better place: •

Committee on Anti-Racism and Fighting Antisemitism – developing long-term strategies to address hate, discrimination and bigotry in our community, including Training for Active Bystanders so that citizens are equipped to interrupt harm as incidents occur

Jewish Emergency Management System – providing security awareness and emergency response coordination, training and expertise

Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Day of Service Projects – enabling volunteers to help those in need

•

Jewish Day School and Jewish Teen Initiative Programs – teaching lessons in service, compassion and gratitude

Temple Partnerships – engaging in collaborative programming, advocacy and community member support

Philanthropic Opportunities for Community Conscious Companies – mobilizing businesses and those employed in Metrowest who want to give back

THE POWER OF VOLUNTEERISM Volunteers are the lifeblood of JFS. They come to JFS looking for an opportunity to do good – what they find is a partnership through which they can have real and significant impact in the lives of those who need help the most.

Distributions of clothing and school supplies, holiday meal deliveries, wellness checks, assistance with medical appointments, English as a Second Language tutoring and acculturation support are just some of the ways volunteers fuel our work in the community. It is only through the Power of Volunteerism that JFS is able to make a difference in the lives of over 7,500 people each year.

When Haitian asylum seekers were relocated to Framingham, JFS took the lead in coordinating services and moving the families from emergency shelter to more suitable temporary housing.
