A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT AND CEO Dear JFS Friends, Supporters, and Collaborative Partners,

We hope this Report to the Community finds you and your families in continued good health. The following report will show the immense positive impact JFS made in the community especially for the most vulnerable families amongst us. 2021 proved to be a year where enhanced focused efforts combating COVID-19 on all fronts was absolutely necessary while at the same time we forged forward on a very important strategic planning process to help us guide JFS in our postpandemic work and our impacts for the next 5 years. A strategic plan has been completed which will guide JFS in collaboration with our community partners on our future directions. A comprehensive description of this plan will be sent in the coming weeks but we can tell you 3 major areas will be part of our new strategy: 1. Innovative Programming utilizing a Whole Community/Whole Family approach to enhance our impact in the Jewish, Older Adult, and Immigrant Communities.

2. Increased Marketing and Communications to let you know how, what, and the level of impact we are making and to increase the ease of access to our services.

3. Robust Efforts to increase resources and our long-term organizational sustainability.

The pictures on the front of our report show some of that focused effort against COVID-19. We are especially proud of our “Get the Vaccine” efforts in the immigrant community, our work fighting racism and Antisemitism, taking care of vulnerable adults, and providing leadership for social justice and Tikkun Olam in Metrowest.

A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT AND CEO continued Additionally, in partnership and collaboration with Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), Catholic Charities of Boston, Jewish Family Service of Western MA (Springfield), and many more partner organizations, JFS has committed to resettling Afghan Evacuees. As was the case with the Syrian Humanitarian effort of 5 years ago, it will require a large community based response to resettle families. Thank you in advance for helping us welcome these families into our accepting and inclusive communities.

The secret of our success continues to be our ability to harness the power of volunteers and collaborative partnerships. JFS will continue to increase our role as a community convener, bringing faith and non-profit organizations together to forge a future agenda of good. We are excited to report that we have trained hundreds of Active Bystanders and will continue to mobilize citizens to help us in the fight against racism and Antisemitism.

JFS continues to be a great investment for social good and has a multi-year rating in Charity Navigator of 4 Stars. JFS is in the top 1% of over 9,000 non-profits rated by Charity Navigator.

Fighting to reduce poverty in the Jewish community As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic persist, urgent calls to the case managers in the Family Assistance program have dramatically increased.

Calls from single parents who lost their jobs and are facing eviction, calls from family members struggling to manage funeral costs for departed loved ones, calls from concerned Rabbis about the wellbeing of community members who are in distress. JFS has stood with those who turn to us for help, providing critical financial and emotional support and working with them to restore stability.

Programs Include: Intensive Case Management, Emergency Financial Assistance, Lucy and Joe Press Food Pantry, Holiday Assistance, Information and Referral, Ready for Success Employment Support

Social, Educational and Supportive Programs

Improving safety, social engagement and access to medical care for older adults Most vulnerable to the health implications of COVID-19, frail and low-income older adults have been the hardest hit by the pandemic.

Many months without regular medical care exacerbated new and chronic conditions, and despite the availability of the vaccine, lingering uncertainty forces many to continue to self-isolate, deepening depression and loneliness. Pivoting services to meet changing needs, JFS has stood by these community members, providing life-saving and supportive services to ensure that no one falls through the cracks.

Programs Include: Case Management, Meal Deliveries, Wellness Checks, Jewish Healthy Aging, Healthy Partners, Allies in Aging, Virtual Support Groups, Patient Navigator, LGBT+ Ally Navigator Initiative, Virtual Visitors, Warm Connectors, Homecare, Kesher, English as a Second Language (ESL)

Comprehensive Integrated Assistance

Advancing equity and providing safety, hope and opportunity to immigrant children and families Low wages, language barriers and limited experience with American systems are some of the challenges faced by today’s immigrant families.

For those already struggling, job losses, school and childcare closures and program suspensions caused by the pandemic pushed many toward ruin, making it nearly impossible to pay bills and keep children safe and healthy. JFS has stood by these families, developing innovative solutions that support the financial, academic and social needs of those most at risk so they have the basic essentials that they need, even in the worst of times.

Programs Include: Basic Needs Distributions, Case Management, Financial Assistance, Children’s Clothing Closet, Resettlement Services, Employment Support, ESL, Pathways to Academic Growth, Empowerment and Success (PAGES), Pathways to College Success, Information and Referral

Assisting Jews struggling to make ends meet is a core mission of JFS.

While the reasons for coming to JFS are as varied as the individuals and families seeking help, each client receives the same compassionate attention, gaining access to a wide range of supports and services to address their immediate needs and plot a course to a better future.

The secret to JFS’ success: • Multi-faceted—from emergency basic needs and financial assistance to specialized, intensive case management that helps stabilize families and move them towards self-sufficiency.

Challenges: • Devastating medical diagnoses, mental health crises, job loss and extended unemployment, divorce, domestic abuse and death of a family member can quickly drive a normally stable household into emotional and financial distress.

• For those whose grasp on stability was already tentative, the stress, financial and health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have forced many vulnerable community members to seek assistance for the first time, driving the number of requests for help increasingly higher as the pandemic has progressed.

ANTI-POVERTY INITIATIVE continued Family Assistance Case Managers Take a Comprehensive Approach.

When community members come to JFS for help, they gain an ally that will work with them through the most difficult of situations.

→ First, an initial assessment is completed to prioritize urgent needs. Immediate, short-term assistance

may include: ~ Bags of food from the Lucy and Joe Press Food Pantry or gift cards to local supermarkets. ~ Information about and referrals for specialized or ongoing support such as legal or counseling services or established food pantries. ~ Emergency housing support for clients who are homeless. ~ Assistance with transportation to important medical appointments or job interviews. ~ Holiday assistance, such as gifts so children can enjoy the celebration of Hanukkah, or gift cards to buy supplies for a traditional meal.

→ Next, case managers spend countless hours helping clients develop and execute on a plan to resolve the current crisis. This work may include: ~ Developing a budget and adjusting spending to reduce expenses. ~ Submitting applications for subsidized public housing. ~ Enrolling in public benefits. ~ Working with JVS to get a new or better job. ~ Negotiating with landlords or vendors to reduce costs or continue/ Volunteer Patient Navigator provide services.

As clients achieve each goal, case managers are there to guide them through next steps, and together they breathe a sigh of relief when the emergency has passed.

→ While most reach self-sufficiency, some who are vulnerable may need long-term support. For those who continue to need JFS, our case managers are here to respond. Support over time may be needed when: ~ A family member dies and the costs for a traditional Jewish burial are high. ~ A job loss leads to overdue bills and depleted savings. ~ A new or chronic medical diagnosis affects independence or self-care. ~ A spiraling mental health crisis leads to homelessness.

Improving safety, social engagement and access to medical care for older adults

Indoor bowling is one of the many activities JFS coordinates for older adults that encourage movement and friendly social interaction

Helping vulnerable older adults live independently in the community is a core mission of JFS. Challenges: • For older adults with limited resources, their retirement years are often a struggle as they balance a low fixed income with rising costs of living and medical care. Changing or declining health can affect quality of life, and as opportunities to engage with peers and friends diminish over time, feelings of isolation and depression often set in.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected these community members the most - emerging and chronic health conditions have worsened due to a lack of regular medical care, loved ones have been lost to the severity of the virus and, despite the availability of the vaccine, lingering uncertainty forces many to continue to self-isolate, deepening despair and loneliness.

While most of us envision retirement as an enjoyable time, the reality for many is that it is a time of going without – not being able to afford essentials like food, rent or medicine, grieving the loss of companionship or meaningful interaction, suffering reduced functioning due to debilitating health conditions. JFS stands with these community members, providing a wide range of programs and services that ensure they have the basics they need, and the care and support they deserve as they navigate the challenges that come with aging.

The secret to JFS’ success: • Multi-faceted—from preventative wellness programs to specialized, intensive case management that addresses the changing needs of older adults and their caregivers.

New arrivals are young families eager to build a better future who ultimately find themselves struggling due to language barriers, few job opportunities and limited experience with American institutions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to wreak havoc among those already vulnerable, creating additional obstacles due to disruptions in employment, childcare and educational systems.

For many of these families, often single parent households, assistance from JFS has meant the difference between being homeless and having a stable environment where children feel safe.

SEEKING SAFETY Many immigrants leave their homeland to escape violence.

Arriving with little, they are alone and struggle to survive.

When a refugee family is assigned to JFS’ Resettlement program, they work with a 24/7 support team that assists them in their journey to self-sufficiency.

The TAB program “helps participants recognize when they are bystanders, analyze situations, and evaluate the consequences for everyone involved. TAB heightens bystanders’ power. THE POWER OF VOLUNTEERISM Volunteers are the lifeblood of JFS. They come to JFS looking for an opportunity to do good – what they find is a partnership through which they can have real and significant impact in the lives of those who need help the most. From distributions of food, clothing and personal care items to academic and vocational mentoring; from wellness checks to assistance with medical appointments; from English as a Second Language tutoring to acculturation support – volunteers fuel our work in the community and it is only through the Power of Volunteerism that JFS is able to make a difference in the lives of over 7,500 people each year.

In 2019 in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, former Board Member Chester Black and his wife Diane brought their six children, their spouses and their 23 grandchildren together for a special Ready-to-Wear packing event at the Children’s Clothing Closet where they assembled orders for 23 families in need, putting into action their belief in the “Power of Volunteerism”

JFS proudly honors Chester and Diane Black with the Max Michelson Humanitarian Award.

These extraordinary community leaders have quietly made a significant imprint in the Global, Boston and Metrowest communities, leading by example to foster community engagement with their children and 23 grandchildren. STAFF continued HOMECARE The pandemic brought with it many challenges, and under the leadership of managers Adan Hendrie and Dámaris Medina-Hernández, with support from registered nurse Shashona Kaye, our dedicated homecare workers have worked without fail to provide homemaker and personal care services to our most vulnerable community members so they may continue to live in their homes— safely, independently and with dignity.
