"I like little things ," she says. "I paint to the size of the printed illustration. I use triple zero brushes. When I started my big oil painting, I thought 'I have to test my muscles, not just my knuckles. '" It's also a stretch of her future ambitions. As much as she enjoys illustration, Borda says her fantasy is to paint full time. ''I'm lucky to work with good editors, but it's not as satisfying as when I'm working for myself, free of the rules and demands of the commercial world. I miss the pure empiric of painting for myself. " â&#x20AC;˘

Left: " For this story in a teen magazine about the different types of popular girls, I imagined what each of the types would look like, and what the nuances were that distinguished them from each other. I wrote most of the copy, which I think helps provide a unified 'voice' in the words and pictures. " This illustration was for a story about an eccentric woman who lived on a barge i n Amsterdam and collected stray cats. I chose to highlight the poignant detail of the total number of tins of catfood consumed each day. This was my first commissioned gouache painting . "The Vital Visions brochure was for an exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum. This illustrated a story in the brochure by one of the artists who, as a child, humiliated a janitor by giving him a box of coal in front of an audience. I wanted to capture the purity of the aloneness of humiliation; and I wanted to emphasize that this person's breakdown was due to the implications of the contents of a little box. (The TV show was produced in Pittsburgh.) I wanted to capture the essential Mr. Rogers . So Mr. Roger's posture and face were important, but I also used some props to help describe him: his little wood -paneled set and his zippered sweaters ." California, and illustrator Michael Schwab teamed up on a poster to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the USA Junior Cycling Development. "A few years ago Giro produced a limited-edition, hand-painted Lance Armstrong ' Lone Star' signature helmet to raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which focuses its resources on cancer survivorship, " art director Judi Oyama said. "It was a huge effort and a great success, and everyone at Giro felt really positive about the project. Since that time, Lance has gone on to win four Tours de France and celebrate more than five years of living cancer-free. So I wanted to find another way to bring awareness to the LAF and Lance's achievements, and create something special for Lance's fans and cycling fans worldwide. I knew Michael Schwab was an avid bike rider and called him because his work seemed like a perfect way to capture Lance's style-clean, strong and classic. Michael responded with incredible enthusiasm and an amazing design that everyone, especially Lance, really loves. To date , we've raised approximately $40,000 for the LAF and USA Junior Cycling Development. Our goal is to raise $60,000 and we still have a few prints available. paign to generate awareness and donations for the Sausalito Fireboat Fund, " said art director Charlie McQuilkin. "With the recent economic downturn, Sausalito's city budget is hurting, so the firefighters themselves have taken on a fundraising campaign to buy a badly needed fireboat. Y&R started with the logo, deciding it had to be to the point and sum up the message. 'Sausalito needs the boat,' also serves as a nice punctuation, a way to drive home the more playful poster headlines. The stock photo of the blue water reinforces the aquatic nature of the headlines and it dresses up a project that had virtually no budget. The fund currently has pledges for nearly half their goal. The posters have proven to be very popular in town, in fact, one of our biggest problems has been that people keep stealing them. Exhibit Left: The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh heralded changes in services, attitudes and facilities with a branding/ identity overhaul. Landesberg Design and marketing team Red House Communications worked closely with Carnegie Library for over two years to investigate how the community thinks about and uses the library, and to determine how to put a fresh look on this on-the-move community resource. "The new symbol combines an L (library) with an i (information) , a simple solution for a simple message: the library is the source for information in every form, " said designer Rick Landesberg.

"Banners, vans, print materials and signage use bright, surprising colors to jolt perceptions that libraries are stuffy, obsolete, or unwelcoming. Juliette Borda's illustration on the new library delivery vans features funky library-users engaged with books , cruising the Web and listening to music. Singer/songwriter Tracy Chapman and Elektra Records

chose Midwestern communication firm Planet Propaganda in Madison, Wisconsin, to design the packaging for her new CD Let It Rain. To get a feel for the music, Planet principal Kevin Wade flew to San Francisco to spend time with Tracy in the studio. "The music is focused and personal, born from Tracy's dedication to the songwriting process, " Wade said. "It's also richly textural, with an eclectic range of instrumentation and sounds-gospel singers, lap steel guitars and vintage keyboards.

Making use of rich colors and textures as a backdrop for a solitary image of Tracy makes for a just-right package cover.

Simple but elegant script typography serves to capture the lyrical mood of the music within. was to refresh and revitalize the Barbie brand for a new generation of girls worldwide while maintaining the heritage of the brand," said creative director Maruchi Santana. "Through research, we uncovered the brand's most valuable positioning: for girls, Barbie is real, is fun, is fashion. The brand was relaunched in 150 countries worldwide with an evolved identity, packaging and merchandising system that could accommodate tens of thousands of packages in up to nine languages. Working with FAO Schwarz and Mattel, the first Barbie Experience store was designed featuring original music, a video wall, an interactive area and lifestyle photography. Girls and moms approve. Cultural Influences: Being inspired by artists like Frida Kahlo. Paul Rand. Tibor Kalman and Paula Scher when I was a student cemented my decision to become a designer. I loved the idea of bringing artistic sensitivity and design sensibility together. Today. I find inspiration by playing in the funkiness of city living. mixing in a bit of world travel. and refining the context of images I stumble across-either found or my own. Basically. I like to create design out of the drama around me .

Environment: My small office is in the old Jackson Square district, surrounded by buildings which predate the 1906 earthquake . The area has the feel of a small Parisian back street. complete with cobblestone walks and a seedy nightlife . In fact. my street was once the notorious Barbary Coast; now. in place of barkers and burlesque queens are antique shops intermixed with law offices and trendy cafes. Furnishings in my office include mid-century classics and glimpses of bright color derived from my stationery system .

Philosophy: Walking to work each morning. I pass construction workers. suited financial analysts. fash ionistas in stilettos and kids on their way to school. I often wonder what their stories are. where they came from and why they're here. In my work. I also search for the story behind each client. each product. Revealing this story. in a unique and engaging way. is what I find rewarding in design . That said. clever simplicity is how I hope my work is perceived .
