Ralph Appelbaum Associates on board pre-Holocaust, and a business manager. In spite of the operation's scale, Appelbaum still manages to attend a majority of key presentations, personally supervise the progress of many projects and even keep a hand in design work. Between trips, he seeks the sanctuary of his home at the eastern end of Long Island shared with his painter wife, and teenage son.

In his late 50s, Appelbaum commands authority with a soft-spoken and courteous manner. A few years ago the New York Times unfairly dubbed him "King Ralph ," a nickname better suited for a megalomaniac than someone who seems more like the benevolent chieftain of a fiercely loyal tribe. Equal parts shaman, showman and salesman, Appelbaum remains firmly at the center of his enterprise. Which makes a parting blessing uttered recently by one of his clients, Venerable Dharma Master Hsin Tao Shih of Taiwan, even more poignant: "I wish you good health to stay strong. Location: Downtown Memphis, Tennessee.

Duration: Carbon 14 has existed in its cu rrent form since the winter of 2000.

Staff: Twelve.

Education: Principal Billy Riley has a fine arts degree from Memp his Co llege of Art with a concentratio n in papermaking and book binding .

Principal Stinson Li les has a degree in English from Rhodes College with an emphasis in medieva l literature . Principal Martin Wi lford spent numerous semesters at the University of Memphis studying a variety of subjects .

Cultural Influences: Everyone brings different influe nces to t he tab le, whic h is part of w hat makes the place a little nuts, in an inspiring ki nd of way.

But one influence we all have in common is Memphis. Creativity bubbles up out of the black soi l down here, and everyone we bump into seems to have a half-finished novel, an old letter-press or a garage band. The Memphis advertising scene is underrated, and shops all over town duke it out everyday with exceptional work for clients like the National Civil Rights Museum, Hard Rock Cafe Worldwide, International Paper, the Smithsonian Rock and Soul museum, the nation's leading minorleague baseba ll franchise and two national barbecue retai lers . The ba r is pretty high . Many of our influ ences are within ten blocks of our office .

Environment: Our env ironment is inspiri ng and relaxed . Giant fine-art pieces, natu ral wood and low-slung leather cha irs are designed to furt her inspire the team to expe riment and focus . The mood at Carbon 14 is equally inspiring . Nothing is more valuable than the fresh perspective of young creatives . We try to mentor them on technica l issues without limiting that unique app roach.

Philosophy: The mission and phi losophy are distilled in a short sentence we call "the po int ."

It reads simp ly, "At Carbon 14, we have a good time making people real ly love products." Consumers are building a stronger and stronger immunity to commercial communications, and more and more clients are realizing that thoughtful design is still a very powerful way to get in their heads . We' re focused on delivering the goods and helping clients have the courage to produce them .
