SUSAN KEIG The popular concept is that red-headed women are not usually demure and soft-spoken. But Susan Jackson Keig is just that. Born in the South, her roots go back to the pioneers of Kentucky.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Susan also studied at Northwestern, University of Chicago and the Institute of Design. She has held various positions, from instructor of design at the U. of Kentucky, Hull House and the Institute of Design to working in design firms as a graphic designer and art director.

"I feel that as designers, we are rather a privileged group. The world is our office-literally no confines to what we might do, especially in conjunction with architects, behavioral scientists, urban planners and the government~' Over the past twelve years, Susan has been associated with Morton Goldsholl Design Associates. Along with her more commercially-oriented clients, she is also

working with an Audubon wildlife sanctuary and with the restoration at Shakertown at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, in exploring the environment by design that was a lifestyle for the Shakers.

Susan was the design consultant on the book "Art in Architecture" and is currently at work on the subject of environmental graphics for another book by the same author, architect Louis G. Redstone.

"I have felt the strangulation of the educational systems, sex discrimination, political inefficiency, social mores and cultural gaps, but I've never lost the sense of excitement. I'm busier now than ever, and enjoying every minute~'

Mrs. Keig has won over 100 awards in national and international competitions and is affiliated with several professional organizations. She was a member of the board of the Art Directors Club of Chicago and the first woman president of the prestigious Society of Typographic Arts.

She lives with her husband, Peter, a Scott, Foresman executive, and son J. J. in a Mies van der Rohe apartment in Chicago and has a second home at the Indiana Dunes.

"This could be such a great world if we could get back to basics-treat each person with the decency we all so very much need, explore the unrealized possibilities in every child, develop our senses to a higher degree and utilize the world's natural resources more effectively.

"This country has never honored its creative peopleits designers-by giving them authority. Perhaps designers could help solve the dilemma we are in, if given a chance.

Carol Moore At first glance, Carol Moore seems almost too fragile to contend with the corporate power, and on its home grounds at that. Doubtless, it was her background in mathematics and a two year stint computing technical statistics for an aircraft company that gave her the inner assurance as well as some sense of the corporate liturgy. Disenchantment with corporate life aircraft style brought her into a graphic design career. As a New York State University graduate she got her first training with a mini-ad agency and then came to her present venue, Corporate Annual Reports, Inc., a prolific producer of the annual corporate testament. Carol has to contend with the business beast in his lair and carry forward the message that there is a world of intelligent, inventive graphics out there.

Things come a little easier for a designer when she can cut a swath through the verbal thicket of financial, statistical, . profit and loss verbiage. Presently she designs for stock brokers, oil companies and yes- aircraft manufacturers. Her view of women in graphic communication is somewhat ambivalent. On one hand she believes a well-versed woman has something of an advantage. Call it surprise if you will. On the other hand, however, for some corporations to accept a woman as an equal "brings on a trauma something like a change of religion for a cardinal."

Anne Wallingford, before becoming an art director, began as a type director in an advertising agency. That means she got her grounding by making her male art director contemporaries look good. It would seem, professionally at least, that a young woman so trained might have some rather strong pro-feminist views. Not so- Anne, like many of her accomplished peers, looks at the designer's (art director's) problems with a certain sexual detachment. Biological differences, she opines, are not necessarily reflected intellectually.

True enough, the female experience differs from the male and may lead to different avenues of thought and solutions- but the differences are neither inferior nor superiorsimply different. If women do hear different drummers, the tune can be measured objectively. She does believe that some feeling for the product can bring forth the better concepts. Not always, but it helps. After several years at Wyse Advertising she is in place at the Lampert Agency where she has for openers- some industrial accounts.
