Happy Birthday, Canada!

still brown and showing the checkered pattern of recent transplanting. Though Expo's site was already beautiful, we could only imagine how great it would be in another month. You were always conscious of water. The river surrounds the islands. Boats and ocean-going ships passed close by. Several lakes had been created and canals interlaced the entire grounds. Huge parks had been included in the site planning as well as innumerable and delightful rest areas, usually on the banks of the canals. Even with the large and unexpected crowd on the first Sunday, there was never a sense of being crowded on the grounds, only in many of the pavilions and the express stations.

On the plus side was the excitement of pre-opening.

The bustle of last minute construction, fighting the deadline. The remarkable transformation of the last few days that climaxed an incredible schedule that the Canadians had set for themselves-and met. Though few judgments had yet been made, and many of the citizens of Montreal had seen little or nothing of the actual site, one could feel their growing awareness that out there in the river was something of which they could be very proud.

Much of what we saw then is now history. Current and future visitors to Expo will undoubtedly get other, perhaps different, impressions. Some things like the season and the inevitable modifications based on experience will actually be different. Reviews, ours and others, will make evaluations, create preconceptions and guidelines

One hundred years. 1867- 1967. Our neighbors to the north are really celebrating. Acoss the entire 5,000 miles , from the province of Newfoundland to the Yukon Territory, it's a year filled with festivities and special events.

In Montreal , they're throwing the biggest party the world has ever seen. There's Expo 67; and The World Festival is offering a fantastic program of performing arts, spectaculars, sports ·and folkloric entertainment drawn from the best six continents can offer.

The Centennial Year, if you're not that familiar with Canadian history, commemorates the British North American Act of 1867 that gave birth to the modern parliamentary state of Canada. Three provinces were involved in the original confederated nation: Canada (now Ontario and Quebec), New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Manitoba joined in 1870, British Columbia in 1871, Prince Edward Island in 1873, Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1905 and Newfoundland in 1949.

Expo is great. We sincerely recommend it as worthwhile and relatively inexpensive. Despite the fact that we were working hard, compelled to move fast, make judgments and record impressions, we still found it extremely enjoyable. It would be great to go back again-as just spectators on a more leisurely schedule.

There were both advantages and disadvantages in seeing Expo when we did. On the minus side, it was still cold. We darn near froze on the open minirail trains; but the rising temperatures over the first weekend and a balmy Sunday portended warmer and perhaps hot days to come. Trees were just beginning to bud. for later visitors. Many comparisons have been and will be made between this and the late New York fair. We saw that, and at the same relative period in time. Expo is something else, with a different emphasis and a different feeling. In beauty, quality of planning and execution, and even in preparedness for the opening, New York had litt_le to compare with this.

We were fortunate that Vance Jonson could arrange his busy design schedule to cover Expo with this editor.

CA readers will recall his brilliant issue on Denmark in 1963, his evaluation of all phases of Danish design and its importance to the economy of that country. Vance also reported the New York World's Fair for CA.

MONTREAL DIARY Because they refiect a specific time period, and because they may offer supplemental information and insights to our major article, I have excerpted the following from my working notes-a kind of abridged Montreal diary.

April 22-23 (weekend before Expo): In Montreal to judge Canadian show. Good show, loaded with Expo ads and promotion. Nearly everyone here seems to have had some kind of involvement in Expo.

Saturday eve: First view of Expo, from top of one of Montreal's new skyscrapers. Spectacular. Surprised that it is really that close to downtown Montreal. Fuller's dome was easiest structure to spot. Could recognize some other

Sunday: Rode Metro. Really impressed. Stations are all different and all good looking. Train is quiet. Pneumatic tires. Carl Regehr (Chicago designer and Graphica 67 judge) shot transparencies. Will ask for some to convert to black and white for CA. Monday, April 24: Judges invited for tour of Expo site. Taxied to entrance, saw new stadium and theater.

Boarded Expo Express in Cite du Havre. First stop was Habitat, still under construction. Wild. Gave varying impresion from different views. Wondered what it would be like in the middle of a city. Stayed on Express to end of line, learned this transportation will be free. Train crosses channel to south end of first island, Ile SainteHelene; then to second, Ile Notre-Dame; runs back of this and across channel to La Ronde area on north end of Ile Sainte-Helene. Huge park in the middle of island.

Realized how big and impressive this exposition was.

Much bigger than New York.

Returned to German pavilion for lunch. Crowded.

One of few restaurants already open. Rode minirail.

Fabulous innovation. Great to see and orient with site.

Runs around pavilions, under Quebec pavilion, right through U.S. pavilion. Surprised here. Saw Clark Gable pie, taxi, idol, flag patterns, chutes at top, then out. Hard to figure. Wished I could have made press conference on Sunday.

Went to press conference and party in Russian pavilion. Loaded with things. Talked to Russian guides.

Young, friendly, proud of their country, anxious to talk about it. Sad note: cosmonaut was killed that morning.

were concenfrating on group of beautiful girls in stunning outfits. Found out they were models in Russian fashion show ..

Decided to cancel two-day run to New York and spend more time on Expo coverage. Called my wife and told her to fly to Montreal. This was too good to miss and might not be able to get back later.

Monday evening: Montreal club dinner. Great people. Met many more who had been involved with Expo. Planned to get back and do homework on Expo Guide and other material. Wound up in swinging Montreal discotheque. Great city. Bilingual speech adds tremendously to charm. Wished I'd had time to brush up on my French. Embarrassed to try; embarrassed because I wouldn't.

Tuesday morning: Drove around Montreal with Regehr and his wife, Elaine. Beautiful city. Great natural setting of hills and rivers. Wonderful old buildings, generally very good new architecture. Went up to Mont-Royal Park. No cars allowed. Rode hansom cab up to Chalet-Observatoire. Magnificent view overlooking park, McGill University, downtown Montreal, St. Lawrence River. Montreal is bigger than I had expected.

Book says Greater Montreal is 2,600,000, fifth largest city in North America, which would put it behind only New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Mexico City.

Finally got to homework. Read Expo Guide and became aware of quantity of film being featured, how much it had affected design of many pavilions. Made notes on Expo background. First sanctioned exposition in North America. Canada received go ahead in November 1962 when Russians relinquished their prior option for 1967.

Ambitious plans called for two islands in St. Lawrence River. One was only half there, other was nonexistent.

48,000 feet of concrete retaining walls. Excavation for new 15Y2-mile subway supplied 15 million tons of rock and earthfill, balance acquired by dredging the river.

New orthotropic bridge, 2,265 feet long, 94 feet wide.

Place des Arts in Montreal has three halls, largest with Dick and Jean Coyne in La Ronde area.

3,000 seats, garage holds 850 cars. Somehow the energetic Canadians accomplished these incredible preparations in the short time allowed.

Special laws have been passed and strong controls set up to prevent gouging of Expo visitors. Should be effective. Taxi driver told me he had considered fixing up a room to rent but now had doubts that he could charge enough to make it worth his while. Very reasonable priced student accommodations are available at universities and colleges. For information or aid in getting Expo accommodations contact: Logexpo, Canadian Corporation for the 1967 World Exhibition, Administration Pavilion, Cite du Havre, Montreal, Canada Telephone: Montreal 397-8397 Wednesday: Applied at Expo press headquarters for credentials. Crowded with reporters from all over the world. Despite my neglecting to have advance clearance, authorities were courteous and friendly, processed my application quickly. Wandered around Expo grounds and rode minirail, getting familiar with locations, taking shots of last minute preparations. Amazing change since Monday. Exciting to watch site snap into shape. Still cleaning up loose ends in most pavilions. Telephone pavilion was

open, saw Disney film in "Circle-Vision 360°:' Interesting presentation technique.

Experienced some difficulty with Expo map, key numbers and numerical index. Not too bad to locate name of a pavilion, murder to fin~out where any specific pavilion was. Bought another map with alphabetical index. Tired of shuffling maps and looking in indexes.

Wrote names on one map and threw other away.

Rode Metro back to city. Checked out of hotel and moved to the flat Alan Wilkenson, president of Montreal club, had generously made available to us while we were covering Expo story. Alan was very helpful in making contacts and getting information and we are very grateful.

Spent evening studying information I had accumulated.

Thursday: Vance arrived early. Went over my notes.

Got his press clearance and began serious work on story.

Started with minirail ride for his orientation. Free then.

Will cost fifty cents after opening. Well worth the price, may be crowded.

First stop was U.S. pavilion. Not open. Met Ivan Chermayeff and Jack Masey, USIA Chief of Design and Opening day celebration with daylight fireworks, brilliant formation flying. Lower left: map of lie Notre Dame with this editor's notes.

Operations. They arranged for us to get in. Dome is even more impressive from the inside. Hard to believe how much space it contains. Understand that a $400,000 air conditioning system and computer controlled shades that follow sun's path over the globe will combat summer heat and glare. Still quite a bit of work going on. Longest escalator I had ever seen went to top of exhibit. Not operating at that time. Climbed all the way (with rest stops). We were amazed and amused by fabulous collections exhibited. Political posters went back to early 1800's.

Any designer would flip over these, many other exhibits.

Pop art was really big. Dine painting was funny. Two rectangles of solid color, about 40 feet high, with notation that these were Sherwin-Williams Brilliant Cerise and Flame Red, or something like that. Wonder what they will do with these paintings when Expo is over?

Saw as much as we could. Many pavilions were still finishing up. Most were not open but, with press passes , we were usually able to get in. Sometimes, as in Labyrinth, we had virtually private film showings. Made it easy to work. I was beginning to get in shape. Vance's legs were aching that night.

Friday, April 28, Opening Day: Site was a beautiful sight. All night effort had completed the transformation .

People made a difference , gave it reality and added to the excitement. Biggest crowds were where we had guessed-the minirails and U.S. pavilion. Don't know if it was prominence of dome, advance and critical publicity in the press or plain curiosity. Probably much of latter.

Cuban pavilion drew bigger crowds than it deserved.

Effective daytime fireworks. Exhilarating to realize ''This is it and I am here'.'

Most of our experiences over the next few days are refiected in our Expo story. There are, however, a few additional comments and explanations that I would like to make.

We were working awfully fast, and we did have to make snap judgments and decisions. We had to see a lot in a short time and we had to allow the time to photograph what we selected to cover. Some of this, particularly the film presentations, was often a complex problem.

I continue to be amazed and delighted at what Vance did record on film, his sensitive eye for the detail or the view that expressed a feeling. I might also add that this is not the product of random and prolific shooting. We have printed nearly a third of his photographs.

There were many things we could not devote enough time to; and some things (as much as possible by predetermination) that we did not see at all. In some cases, such as the magnificent art exhibited at Expo, we felt that it would be adequately covered in other publications.

Three U.S. states had Expo pavilions.

In front of the New York pavilion, what appeared to be the entrance, was a carousel which we assumed symbolized fun and action. It moved very slowly, far too slowly for what there was to see-a few pictures reproduced in various techniques, spirals and op patterns in mostly lollypop configurations. The only place to get off was where we got on, the real entrance was elsewhere.

The carousel proved symbolic of the pavilion, it moved very slowly and went nowhere.

It's hard to say much about the Maine pavilion. It was Colonial (or something) architecture with content displayed in early storewindow. A model train ran in (and out) of the building presenting products of Maine.

The third was Vermont. The simple, striking architecture seemed to capture the character of the Green Mountain State. Inside, the displays were presented with taste and dignity, and very good typography.

The Cuban pavilion that I had mentioned earlier was one of the unfortunately low points of Expo. It was filled with dull, bitter, blatant propaganda. Strangely enough, it did begin to swing at night with music and slide projections on the walls of the cubistic structure. This only reinforced the awareness of how badly they had missed their communication opportunity.

work was chosen for Honours are American-owned , the boy-wonder agencies of Madison Avenue were represented only by Doyle Dane Bernbach who were honoured for their Tern shirt campaign.

"This year, the Circle inaugurated the new category of Commendations. These are, in effect, the short list from which the Honours are chosen. The fifty-six advertisements, commercials and campaigns selected reveal the existence of new Davids among the Goliaths. Most remarkable of all, a tiny agency called John Collings & Partners, with virtually only three accounts to its name , managed to secure Commendations for each of the three-El Al Airlines, Russian Watches and the J ewish Chronicle.

"This is certainly an infant prodigy to watch. At the moment Collings go to the top creative consultants for their campaigns, but they are anxious to grow their own.

"Davidson, Pearce, Berry & Tuck is another small agency whose billing must shortly catch up with their reputation. DPB&T collected an Honour for a trade campaign for Thornber Chicks and five commendations for other campaigns.

"Among the Goliaths, neither Young & Rubicam nor Ogilvy & Mather show any sign of hardening of the creative arteries. Y&R collected both Honours and Commendations for both Heinz and Cadbury advertising.

O&M added fresh laurels to such heavily-decorated accounts as Milk, Standard-Triumph, Eggs and Schweppes.

"The hardiest perennial of all among London's 'creative' agencies-Collett, Dickenson, Pearce & Partnersran true to form with Honours for their Selfridges campaign and Commendations for Chemstrand/ Acrilan , and Quaker Oats/Chunky Meat. London agencies are currently waiting with bated breath to see what CDP will do with the Ford account which they recently landed. " One other agency should be singled out. The KMP Partnership has shot to fame in the last three years with a billing that seemed to double weekly. Malicious tongues which said that their talent for getting business outstripped their talent for creating advertisements, can now by countered with an Honour for Nikon Cameras and Commendations for Cunard and McGredy Roses.

"So much for gossip. Whither London creatively? We are still seduced by dazzling inventive ideas, such as DOP Shampoo sending a girl in an E-type Jaguar through a car wash with the bonnet down. We still like ads which are no fun for people who can't read , such as the Selfridges advertisements. We confidently produce some of the world's finest magazine advertising, aimed at an educated middle-class. We are less confident dealing with black-and-white in the mass-circulation dailies. And we are least confident with TV. Probably, nothing we do is quite as bad as the worst American commercials, but then nothing we do is quite as good as the best.

Expo 67 is a product of brilliant master planning.

Its site, two islands in the St. Lawrence Seaway, was created largely of fill dirt taken from Montreal's new subway system. This super-program reflects the kind of thinking which seems to have prevailed since Expo's inception four years ago. Its theme is based on the concept that what divides men is infinitely less important than that which links them together. Expo itself physically manifests this theme. Free trains link the islands, telephones and lockers are plentiful, rest areas and snack bars (with controlled prices) abound. One of the most welcome results of Canadian think-ahead philosophy is the electronic monitor system with boards that announce special events and warn tired visitors of excessive crowds at points around the site.

Organic architecture enhances containment In making a value judgment of Expo 's architecture it soon became clear that it is mostly excellent, especially the Canadian theme pavilions and other Expo commissioned designs. These avant-garde structures function well for their purpose and in their environment, but they are much more than just containers. They are organic forms which are vital and interesting in themselves, and thev are related by an obvious natural discipline.

Unpainted woods , rusting metals and natural concrete are blended together in geometric organisms which are sometimes more beautiful and e"ffective than their contents. Perhaps they will precipitate new standards to replace the architectural cliches which are the cityscapes of the world . The quality of the current architecture of Montreal , as well as the powerful concepts at Expo , could ind icate that the Canadians are already showing us the way .

Multi-screen films: a struggle between form and content Expo 67 is a film fair. This medium permeat~s the experience and has finally risen to top position in exposition communication. The difficulty is to find a single screen that delivers an honest, well-structured message. The median screen average is probably six, and ranges to an incredible high of 112 at the Czechoslovakian pavilion. Dramatic content was usually sacrificed, or substituted for,

by the gimmicky form of multiple screens, often more light show than cinema. Problems of alignment of image, synchronization, power failures and other obvious dilemmas diverted content (when it was present) into a blurred delivery of technically good stock footage. When we trie.d to recall messages, they all seemed to mesh in a potpourri of impressions. Audience reaction was minimal but seldom evidenced boredom. The frenzied interplay of images was augmented with such visual devices as views from heights, speed, children (disproportionately Negro), go-go dancers and more go-go dancers

repetitiously appearing in film after film. One notable exception, and probably the most popular film at Expo , was in the Telephone pavilion . This Disney film utilized nine screens for a 360 degree image in the circular theater. The message was a simple tour of beautiful Canada by car, boat, and helicopter and included sitting in the middle of a parade, a ski slope and a hockey game. The boat rocked and the helicopter was gentle. The only deliberate attempt to capitalize on the equilibria! involvement was a fast trip and a sharp corner following a siren wailing police car on Montreal streets.

1. These shots of the six-screen film at the Canadian Pacific pavilion clearly demonstrate the problems of form and content imposed by this cliche system. Note even the seventh division created by splitting one screen into two images.

2. Czechoslovakian pavilion theater leads with 112 screens that also move in and out of space while changing images. We observed that the burned out lights (average six to ten) actually contributed to the drama of this wildly exciting, contentless show.

1. Canadian Film Board used only two screens for their film; a vertical screen and a screen on the floor. In the Labyrinth theater, designed to conform to the film, viewers watched from four tiers of balconies on each side. A second film in another theater in Labyrinth used a conventional three-screen projection system.

2. Labyrinth maze. A fantastic room of giant glass prisms which create a psychedelic experience with softly flickering lights which go into infinity in all directions. We were deeply moved when we viewed this alone prior to opening day. Later, when jammed with people who were not interested in tuning in with the suggested meditation , the planned for experience did not happen.

Laterna Magi ca: film as a performing art The most exciting presentation we saw was Laterna Magica, a brilliantly creative, wildly humoroLtS Czechoslovakian theater that combined film, live actors and ballet into a unique artistic expression.

Authored by producer Alfred Radok and architect Josef Svoboda, it was initially presented at the Brussels World Exhibition. Since then, new material has been consistently added and Laterna Magica has toured many of the major cities of the world.

Because it charged admission , Laterna Mag ica was unfortunately located in La Ronde where the crowd was seeking amusements on rides and not in a theate r.

Also , Expo 's abundance of free film and entertainmen t was detrimental to paid admissions-even to the highly publicized " Hello Dolly. " On the opening days, the magnificent performance of Laterna Magica, much of it original material for Montreal , was played before an almost empty house.

offering a fulfillment of jealous suspicions. After much back and forth pushing, battling, interchange of characters, and objects, the chaos reaches riot proportions and attracts police and firemen .

1. Display in theater lobby.

2. Animated film where two sun bathers compete for sunlight through various cloud, water, umbrellas and other devices. At times the cartoon figures were off the screen and on dancers' umbrellas.

4. A live musician meets himself on the screen, in multiple form.

3. " First Czech Cinema," a silent film with the wife, a lover and a husband who returns unexpectedly from a hunting trip. Next, "Modern Czech Film ," Othello.

5. A mischievous dancer runs off with an artist's palette and he pursues her on the stage and in and out of three screens, up buildings, over rooftops, on high-wires, etc.

Sophistication or communication?

Sophisticated communication of "designer taste" can often be meaningless or even confusing to Ute majority of the audience. We found some of this confusion evident in many places, occasionally in big buncheswhich ~rings us to the U.S. pavilion. A high point of the exhibit, and of the entire fair, was the first realization that one was seeing the actual space capsules with their skins scorched from reentry.

Authenticity was the framework for the entire exhibit.

All of the dolls, duck decoys, political campaign posters and gimmicks, mousetraps, hand-made quilts, guitars, movie props, etcetera, were 100% genuine artifacts of American "creative" history. Even the super-king-size pop art retained the mood. Maybe a repeat pattern of Andy Warhol's portrait ain't that old, but it's pretty historical. The early viewers didn 't quite seem to grasp the fascination of it all. The Canadian and foreign press were quick to knock the exhi bi t (but also to praise Fuller's magnificent dome). Most

early U.S. reviewers tiptoed around it gingerly, not yet sure of where it was safe to leap. Now they're getting with it and delighting in the "soft sell" and "shock to the 'straights" whom they assure the only alternate was computers, Cadillacs and kitchens.

The predominantly U.S. summer audience will be hip.

Much less has been said about a section of the British pavilion that is also designer taste. But the great humor and different target for attack may allow it to exist without explanation.

Featured film was a novel single screen, but the projection was divided into multiple images.

Only two exceptions we noted were: (1) a fashion show of surprising quality with beautiful models; (2) a dramatic device that resembled a plastic , spiraling fish spine and ran the entire length of the pavilion. A light would appear at one end and move rapidly along the display. Unable to determine what this symbolized , we asked a Russian guide if it might be lineal acceleration. "No," he replied.

"It's just there. You know ... uh, decoration."

Night alters Expo into an electric environment The difference is bigger than night and day because of the imaginative and prolific use of electric energy, and the supplemental effect of magnificent planning for reflections in the myriad channels , canals , lakes and pools that lace the exposition grounds with water.

Expo 67: 62 nations engaged in competitive communication Expo 67 is, reduced to simplest terms, an arena where 62 nations are engaged in the communication game. Its name is "How to Win Friends and Influence People"; and the skill of the players is as varied as the strategy. Unlike conventional media, the challenge of exposition design lies in its limitless possibilities. Designers, used to working within disciplines imposed by limited media, often fail to respond to the opportunities of exposition design. The lack of real breakthroughs into vital new concepts can only be explained as a psychological need to impose peripheral limits for comfort of the mind. Original answers to climate control, traffic engineering, clear communication of an idea to people of various languages, and stimulation of the many human senses have not yet been found.

We hope that future Expos will find creative solutions to these real problems and by so doing make a quantum jump into the future-of similar magnitude to the jump that Expo 67 has taken over all previous expositions. This is the challenge to the designers of the world.

Tern shirts take a timid step towards Carnaby Street.

The Circle announced the 1967 Honours List at a" dinner held at The Livery Hall of the Worshipful Company of Painters-Stainers. An innovation this year was the addition, to the eight Honours and the President's Award, of fiftyseven Commendations.

The Guest of Honour was The Right Honourable Lord Hill of Luton, Chairman of the Independent Television Authority. To his toast to "The Advertising Creative Circle;' a reply was made by Ronald Kirkwood, immediate past president of the Circle and creative director of McCannErickson Limited.

The Honours List was announced by Paul Best, copy manager of Young & Rubicam Limited. The awards were presented by George Pope, general manager of The Times.

The President's Award to Young & Rubicam Limited for a consumer press advertisement for Cadbury's Dairy Milk Chocolate was presented by Brian Palmer, president of the Advertising Creative Circle and a partner in the KMP Partnership.

Expo Promotion Ironically, Expo's strongest point of appealits lack of commercialism-increased the cost and problems of promotion. Unlike the New York fair, where the greater part of the advertising and promotion was supplied by the exhibiting companies, the Canadians had to support this burden themselves. A budget in excess of 22 million was appropriated.

Not that Expo is completely without industrial support, there are seven pavilions sponsored by individual companies and that many more that are backed by groups of firms such as the Pulp and Paper Industry. It is also reported that a thousand companies are participating in some form other than direct sponsorship of a pavilion. Though none of this is on the scale of the commercial participation that was seen in New York , it is bringing Expo more promotional support than was probably anticipated in the initial planning.

Early success was felt in Canada where research indicated the promotion had made the people aware and eager for Expo's opening. The sale of Expo Passports (season tickets) was surpassing expectations. But not so in the U.S. from where the planners had forecast that 56 % of the visitors were going to come. A survey in late 1966 revealed a general attitude of indifference. Much of the prime area of potential for Montreal was also the same area that furnished the bulk of the attendance for New York. These people had little cause for enthusiasm, and the survey warned that they seriously doubted that Expo would be really different.

They still envisioned the exhibitors as being primarily commercial with thinly veiled selling motives that would not warrant their serious attention.

It was also discovered that there was a definite

need to sell Canada. Too many of the Americans knew little or nothing about its climate, geography, food , exchange rate or even its largest city where Expo was located. The average conception of Montreal was a city of about 600,000, one fourth of its actual size.

New tactics were devised that resulted in some very bright advertising with headlines like: "This is the city. The fifth largest city in North America. The second largest Expo 67 trademark design by Julien Hebert. Basic unit is ancient sign representing man (vertical line with outstretched arms) .

Other ads, like the examples on the right, pushed the glamour of the international exhibits and the serious content available at Expo.

ln a TV advertising effort to~evelop an emotional awareness of the international environment that would be available, a series of commercials were devised that showed montages of life in several of the exhibiting countries. A celebrity, linked to the country being shown, invited viewers to visit their pavilion and Expo.

In the example at left, the camera opened on Moscow buildings, panned down and zoomed in on a walking figure as a voice asked, "Who in the world is he?" The man turned and replied, "Yuri Gagarin'.'

Then he went on (speaking in Russian with a translator) : "This year Americans can visit the Soviet Union by visiting Expo 67 at Montreal. In a spectacular exhibit of our country, you'll see something of our adventure in space, Soviet medicine, Soviet fashions, in fact all aspects of Soviet contemporary life-all reflected in our theme 'Everything in the name of man for the good of man: Expo 67 is your opportunity to see what the Soviet Union, the United States and 70 other nations are doing (then in English, with a big grin) for Man and His World'.'

Other commercials featured Victor Borge for the Scandinavian countries, Jam es Mason for Britain, Maurice Chevalier for France, George Jessel for Israel, Olivia deHaviland for Japan (where she was born) and Ed Sullivan for the World Festival of entertainment.

This approach not only imparted a flavor of authenticity to the appeal, it also overcame the fact that there was nothing yet to film in Montreal except the barely finished structures of the various pavilions.

Writer-producer Brian Hawkins of Cockfield Brown and director-editor Bob Schultz of TDF Productions spent nearly three months and flew 60,000 miles producing the films.

Each was photographed by a local camera crew from the country being depicted.

From the early reports, Expo attendance is exceeding the predictions.

Christmas card for Fairchild Semiconductor established some kind of record for complexity of preparation.

To give it a pertinence to the industry, art director Lawrence Bender and photographer Dick Steinheimer decided to incorporate the process used in production of integrated circuits on silicon wafers. Steinheimer facsimilated the production method with a conventional Omega enlarger by replacing the lens with a standard B & L microscope. The art was projected as a step and repeat pattern on a silicon chip (shown same size).

The wafer was then photographed through another microscope in a "dark field" picking up the striking interference colors. The final card was printed as a 240x enlargement of the wafer image. Story of art preparation using the wafer was told on back of the card.

by IBM Rochester's Design Center for the local Festival of Arts parade, was extremely light weight, inexpensive and effective. The base is % "ply on a frame of 1 x 8's. Posts are 1" electrical conduit. Panels are 1" styrofoam laminated between illustration board with masking tape sealing the edges. Very simple bearings permit the forms to rotate freely and randomly in the wind. 7 x 25 foot float is powered with a small garden tractor (including long exhaust system to prevent' asphyxiation and muffie engine noise) . 12" pneumatic wheels, fixed in rear and castored in front, gave adequate maneuverability. Directed by R. B. Wheeler, IDSA, structural design by Frank Wilkey, graphic design by Tom Coleman.

Five Special Merit Awards and twenty five Merit Awards were presented in the Ninth Annual Art Directors Association of Iowa exhibition. Shown here are· four of the five top winners, unfortunately prints were not available of the Award winning TV Commercial by Tom Warford. The Professional Artists Club of Minneapolis screened the entries reducing the number of finalists to 154 pieces from which Morton Goldsholl, president of Goldsholl Design Associates, Chicago, and Brent Copp, Freelance Illustrator from Minneapolis selected the Awards.
