#1 TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE
The most breathtaking drive in St. Lucie is along Melissa Adams State Road A1A, edged by our largely undeveloped beaches. You’ll be inspired to pull over at one of our many access points to feel the sand between your toes. Take your time and soak up nature’s beauty! Don’t forget to drive along Indian River Drive, too. Here wind-bent palms hug the cliffside roadway which follows the Indian River Lagoon from Fort Pierce all the way down to Jensen Beach. Sparse on traffic, this
state Scenic Highway boasts of one-of-akind-scenery.
#2 SEE ST. LUCIE BY BOAT
You absolutely must take at least one boat tour while you’re here. There’s a dolphin watch tour, a manatee kayak, and a jungle cruise where you’re likely to spot an alligator, as well as many other guided and “paddle yourself ” tours. St. Lucie is famous for fishing. You can choose from ocean sportfishing, calm estuary experiences or a plethora of freshwater fishing holes. But for quick fun (especially for the little ones), stop by the Fort Pierce City Marina and grab a cheap bag of fish food. Just outside the gift shop is a spot to feed the catfish just waiting to gobble up whatever you throw over the railing. Kids squeal with delight!
#4 FEST ON FRIDAY, SHOP ON SATURDAY
On three out of four Fridays in a typical month, you can enjoy a fabulous open-air concert, festivities, food and fun. Don’t overdo it though, because you’ll find an extraordinary arts and crafts market (a.k.a. “Farmers’ Market”) in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce every Saturday morning (starting at 8 a.m.). Where else can you shop for inexpensive one-of-a-kind jewelry andworks of art while eating a mouthwatering hot Falafel?
There are over 200 restaurants – and counting – in St. Lucie. With everything from local, fresh seafood to Thai food and everything in between (Jamaican, Cuban, Italian, etc.), you really need to eat at quite a few places to get a true taste of what St. Lucie has to offer.

Try Bangkok in downtown Fort Pierce or Blue Water Grill across the street from the ocean on Hutchinson Island. You’ll also find the best burgers in town at Archie’s. Dine under the stars on New York Strip steaks or crab cakes while enjoying live music at the West End Grill, or go for a culinary adventure at the Red Ginger Asian Bistro, then relax and have a drink at wine bar Vine & Barley or the Element Martini Bar, all in St. Lucie West. Other noteworthy mentions: Best seafood dining on the waterfront at Chuck’s Seafood, Thai Food Express (try the Dragon Roll) and Mangrove Matties. So many restaurants…so little time!

Practically next door you’ll find the Manatee Education and Observation Center, the historic Seven Gables House, and the A.E. Backus Gallery & Museum where you’ll find original works from the famed Florida landscape artist and Fort Pierce native A.E. “Bean” Backus, Highwaymen paintings and offerings from contemporary local artists.
GOLFING Great golfing waits for you a few miles down the road at the award winning Fairwinds or Edward G. Enns Indian Hills Golf Course. This 6555yard newly designed course is a favorite of newcomers and long-time residents alike. This challenging yet user-friendly new course features wide

The North Jetty on the north side of the Fort Pierce Inlet was one of the first surf spots in Florida Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, the waves in the St. Lucie area offer fun for all levels. There are various breaks, including beach breaks, reef breaks and point breaks. Fall, winter and spring are the best times to catch waves, as summer in Florida is notorious for flat spells. Fort Pierce is home to central Florida’s final surf spot, the North Jetty, exquisitely located in beautiful Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. Open every day at 8 a.m. — including holidays – the park charges a small admission fee ($3 for one person and $5 for two to eight people). The North Jetty on the north side of the Fort Pierce Inlet was one of the first surf spots in Florida. With consistent and user-friendly waves and a break that is spread out enough to provide waves for all, it’s also the first spot above the Bahamian Bank to receive south and east swells. Visitors from south Florida make it one of their first stops when searching for waves on a south swell. Low tide is the best time to catch it and it’s

also great for longboarding and beginners when it’s small. If a decent size swell is hitting, you will find the local experts ripping, so grab a beach chair or just plop down in the sand to witness some quality surfing. As you drive further south on A1A, St. Lucie offers numerous other surf spots along the coast. There are many paths and park entrances along the shoulder of the road. If there’s a north swell hitting, you can expect waves at nearly every access point. Some more popular spots include Walton Rocks and the power plant.
SURF LEGEND The surf scene in St. Lucie isn’t “in your face,” with over-commercialized billboards and Disney-esque surf shops on every corner. It’s a laid-back, friendly surf town that still maintains an old school surfing vibe. Local legends like Charles Williams, shaper of Impact Surfboards, will tell you that Fort Pierce has become a major surf spot in southern Florida – where the water is warm, the locals are friendly and the waves are consistent and great for all levels of surfing. PROBST LIBRARY Nestled in the PGA Historical Center, the Probst Library is one of the best libraries of golf in the world. Named after Col. R. Otto Probst, a South Bend, Indiana engineer who began collecting golf books and periodicals in the 1920s, the Probst Library features over 6,000 hard-cover books,
3,000 handbooks and yearbooks, and 600 volumes of periodicals, including every issue of PGA Magazine since its inception in 1920. You will find golf books from 1700s and periodicals from the 1850s that cover everything from equipment and instruction to records and The Rules of Golf. Next to the Probst Library you’ll find a room with rare golf books. Among them is the Scottish Acts of Parliament of 1566, which has the first recognizable reference to golf. The historical document refers to the prohibition of golf in 1457 by James II. Why? Because it prevented subjects from training in archery – a main defense mechanism of that era. The Treaty of Glasgow reversed this, and, consequently, James IV – grandson of James II – had clubs made for himself and began to play the game of golf. WATCH OUT FOR THE ALLIGATORS! “Alligators aren’t the main draw,” joked Captain Dana Wade of River Eco-Tours, the longest running tour boat in St. Lucie, speaking about why people flock to cruises,“we see alligators every time.” First Mate Deena Wade corrects: “Well, there was one time we didn’t spot any alligators – but it

was very cold and very rainy.” Once in 10 years – pretty good odds that river cruisers will spot those four-legged creatures that inspire so much interest and fascination.

That’s not all you might see if you take a 90 minute “jungle cruise” with the Wades. Common sightings are also turtles, birds and wild hogs. In fact, the variety and number of wildlife spotted on cruises never cease to amaze its passengers. “We have people who have gone to Egypt to see ibis, for example, and they end up seeing more ibis on our cruise than they saw in Egypt,” said Captain Wade. “Our passengers tell us it’s the best cruise they’ve ever been on.” Captain Wade and his first mate Deena Wade offer the only cruise for exploring the jungle-like backwaters of the “real Florida” – Florida in its natural state. Savannas Preserve State Park Out of the still sunny afternoon, a Bald Eagle swoops through the pines, over the marsh, and snatches a pickerel from an Osprey’s talons. It happens so quickly and gracefully that the lily-spotted water remains quiet; an alligator continues lounging on a muddy bank. From their kayaks, a family takes in the action – and enjoys the water’s quiet peace as it returns. Few places can act as a refuge for both nature and people -- Savannas Preserve State Park is one of them. A 6,000-acre ribbon of wilderness stretching 10 miles, the Savannas is an invaluable freshwater marsh system remnant. This wild yet peaceful place is a refuge for some of Florida’s rarest species and most compelling natural ecosystems. Visitors are drawn for a variety of reasons, but all leave with a similar feeling: that they’ve experienced a rare, often-forgotten corner of “the Real Florida.” Explorers One and All, Big and Small A great way to begin is with a visit to the Education Center. Hiking, Biking & Horseback Riding Over 15 miles of multi-use trails offer great opportunities for exploring. Two self-guided walks introduce visitors to the flowers, trees, plants and critters of the pine flatwood ecosystem. Choose between a .5-mile loop and a 1-mile-long loop. Birding Over 170 bird species have been spotted in the Savannas. Some, such as the endangered Florida Scrub-Jay, can be found few other places in the world. With six distinct ecosystems, a variety of birds abound. Kayaking Canoe and kayak is the best way to explore the basin marsh, one of the Savannas’ most unique features. Guided trips are offered on Thursday and Saturday mornings by appointment, or launch your own boat at any time. Nature Appreciation Extremely wet some years and completely dry in others, this unique ecosystem has many plants and animals found in few other places. Anyone curious about flowers, grasses, birds, insects or reptiles can quickly immerse themselves in new discoveries.

The Wild West

“In western St. Lucie, that is” When some think of the “Wild West” they usually think of Texas, cowboys, horses, cattle, and wildlife. What if you discovered that in St. Lucie County there were thousands of beef cattle still tended by cowboys in the same tradition as done hundreds of years ago? Adams Ranch is one of the largest producing cattle ranches in Florida where wild deer, turkeys, otters, wildcat, coyotes, alligators and rare birds continue to roam this state as in the past. Florida has 1.7 million cattle worked by professional cowboys not seen by most of the beach going tourists. Ranching in Florida began long before there were cattle in Texas. Cattle were brought here first in 1521 by Ponce De Leon and by 1600 there were 20,000
head. Some of these cattle escaped which allowed Native Americans to raise their own cattle and today the Seminoles own ranches and tend to their cattle. The ranches are an important steward of natural land with grass, and trees producing oxygen, storing carbons, and retaining rain water as a water shed. Cattle also eat the under brush which keeps wild fires under control. The county benefits from all of these things while also producing food. Although unknown by many, this important contribution to the environment and the county is located on Adams Ranch in St. Lucie County where the “Wild West” continues. manatee center If you love the manatee, or you are just curious, this is the place you want to visit.
The Center overlooks the Indian River Lagoon, just west of the Atlantic, and Moore’s Creek, a freshwater creek that is a historical resting spot for these lovable creatures. In early 2002, it was estimated that there were a minimum of 3,200 Florida manatees in existence. A subspecies of the West Indian manatee, the Florida manatee is found in Florida’s springs, rivers and shallow coastal waters and in adjacent states. Go inside to the Center’s main display floor and classrooms which tell the story of the ancient manatee. Wander through to see a replica of a natural spring habitat that provides a home to manatees during the cold winter months and the butterfly garden with a brilliant display of color
including red, purple and yellow flowers. Get a look at some of the species that live alongside the manatee in the lagoon in the marine tank. You can catch an Indian River Lagoon Wildlife Boat Tour five days a week. Look for fish, birds, dolphins and, of course, the manatee, during the 90-minute tour. St. Lucie County Marine Center Featuring the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit Come as close to the underwater world as you can get – that is, without strapping on fins! The St. Lucie County Marine Center featuring the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit offers a window into the fascinating life beneath surface. Make no mistake, though – this is not your typical public aquarium. The constantly changing exhibit displays entire ecosystems, complex communities of organisms interacting in their own environment. The exhibit originated at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. In 1980, the first living model of the Atlantic coral reef ecosystem was put on display.

The A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery is located along the waterfront in beautiful, historic downtown Fort Pierce. It was established in 1960 by A.E. Backus, the preeminent Florida landscape painter, and a group of local art enthusiasts. When the museum first opened its doors, it was known as the Fort Pierce Art Gallery. At that time, it was simply intended to be a facility to show the work of local artists. Today, the museum continues to show the work of local artist and in more recent years has expanded to show work by artists from across Florida as well as from across the country. The museum also presents important nationally touring exhibitions such as a prominent Ansel Adams photography show and a legendary National Geographic exhibition. Having a significant permanent collection of A.E. Backus’ work though is what draws so many people to the museums every year. The Backus Museum features the nation's largest display of original paintings by A.E. Backus. The permanent collection presents a vibrant selection of Backus’ paintings encompassing the breadth of Florida landscapes as well as the development of his style and skill. Included in the display is the earliest known Backus, painted from 1918 when he was just 12 years old, as well as his last paint-

ing, left unfinished at the time of his death in 1990. Visitors are encouraged to explore the permanent collection as well as the changing exhibitions for inspiration, education and enjoyment. florida highwaymen Imagine yourself driving along Florida’s scenic A1A highway in the 1950s. You spot a beautiful painting by the side of the road, perfectly capturing the beauty of an unspoiled Florida coastline or landscape scene in vivid, brilliant color. You stop. The painting’s canvas is cheap roofing material and the frame is made of white crown molding.
WHO ARE THE FLORIDA HIGHWAYMEN? The Highwaymen was the moniker given to a group of 26 African American painters who called Fort Pierce home. All men, saved for one woman, the artists sold their works along Florida’s Highways from the 1950s through the 1970s. One of the original group, Alfred Hair, studied under famed Florida landscape painter A.E. Backus. Backus’ influence spread to the entire group, recruited by Hair to paint as a means of escaping the more typical job of the time -- crating or packing at local orange groves. At that time, the artists had few opportunities to present their works for sale. So, they traveled to local businesses to sell their work in addition to setting up roadside galleries at various locations along highway A1A and Interstate 95.
Their work, like Backus’, depicted the raw beauty of the “real Florida,” natural landscapes unspoiled by the widespread development of the state. Their evocative scenes - bent palms over serene waters, brilliant sunsets, majestic ocean views, vivid red Poincianas and more - struck a chord with the public back then, and even more so now that natural Florida landscape has been eaten up by development.
WHERE ARE THE HIGHWAYMEN TODAY? Many of the Highwaymen who are still living responded to the demand by resuming their work, and their renewed popularity has continued unto the present day. zora neale hurston Fort Pierce is the final resting place of world renowned author Zora Neale Hurston, best known for her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. She lived out her final days here in St. Lucie’s oldest city, Fort Pierce, making a big impact on the community in a short amount oftime. You can trace her steps, see where she lived, worked, played and was finally laid to rest by following the Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail. Afterward you can explore her inner life and art in depth at the Zora Neale Hurston Branch Library. There you will find a sizable collection of her newspaper articles, posters, works and videos for your enjoyment and study.

History of the Sunrise Theatre For decades after its opening in 1923, the Sunrise Theatre remained the central place for the area’s cultural activities until it closed in 1983. In 1997, however, after an organized effort to save it by Main Street Fort Pierce (a major local redevelopment effort), the St. Lucie Preservation Association purchased and completely renovated the theatre. Today the Sunrise Theatre has been restored to its rightful place as St. Lucie’s cultural center.

Jewel in its Crown, The Sunrise Black Box Theater This comfortable and intimate venue holds 210 people in a theatre setting but it could be used for an event with no seats, to hold a dance or a cabaret with small tables for a singer or comedian. A black box theater, so named because the walls and ceiling are painted black, features flexible staging, basic technical support, limited seating, simple lighting and an intimate performance experience. Such venues first appeared in the 1960s and 1970s, right around the time street theater was big. Black boxes were abandoned warehouses, foreclosed restaurants or any open space. The more experimental the production, the better; and admission was often free but certainly less than at established theaters. The Sunrise Theatre Black Box's décor has a rough surface and high polish, pointing out the original 1923 terra-cotta block wall, state-of-theart finishing on the bar and new bathrooms, and the VIP high-tops with cushy barstools on risers.

free music and talent festival Sunset Magic On the third Friday of each month, the Fort Pierce marina comes alive with the Sunset Magic Festival. This fun-filled music and talent festival brings people and families of all ages, race, and social backgrounds to meet and have fun in one place. The Sunset Magic Festival celebrates the diversity of the Treasure Coast and showcases the talents of our youth through music, art and games. Families can enjoy youth dancers, hot diverse music, international and local performing artists, board game challenges and more. Sunset Magic, Inc. is a non-profit organization that empowers local youth, towards career choices that include the performing and applied arts. It was April 8, 2009 – early in the morning – 350 miles off the coast of Somalia. The unthinkable happens: After a long and sustained attack, four Somali pirates hijack cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama. It’s the first time pirates have successfully seized a U.S. ship since the early 19th century. It’s also the sixth vessel to be attacked by pirates in one week. So far, pirates had managed to extort some 80 million in ransom in the previous year. The world held its collective breath and watched as the news hit the stations around the globe. Crew members had just completed anti-piracy drills the previous day. They manage to disable the ship just before the AK-47 armed pirates came aboard at about 6 a.m.

Fourteen members of the crew locked themselves into a compartment with the ship’s steering gear, while Chief Engineer Mike Perry – carrying only a knife – lies waiting for the pirates in the darkened engine room. When the pirates arrive, they find that they cannot control the ship. After a chase, Perry stabs the pirate’s ringleader in the hand and captures him. Captain Phillips, with the safety of his crew foremost in his mind, begins to talk to the pirates. Capt. Phillips negotiates with the pirates: use the Alabama’s lifeboat (the pirates ship was sunk) and take him as a hostage, leaving the rest of the crew safe. After a three-day ordeal – including an escape attempt by the Captain and one instance where the pirate was pointing a weapon directly at the Captain’s back – three simultaneous, deadly accurate shots were fired by the U.S. Navy SEAL officers into the heads of pirates, instantly killing all three. The lifeboat was towed in and Captain Phillips was free – and in good condition. This famous lifeboat, bullet holes and all, is now on permanent display at the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum. “This lifeboat represents a piece of living history: this is a modern artifact,� said Museum Curator Ruth McSween. lorida is the fountain of youth – or so thought Ponce de Leon when he landed in “la Florida” (translation, “flowery”) in 1513. Long before he arrived on the scene, however, others were already enjoying life in the land of flowers. Indeed, St. Lucie – once called “the Garden of Eden” by a nineteenth century settler – has a rich history dating back centuries before Christ. It’s a compelling story with various tribes of Indians, Spaniards, U.S. military, and early settlers – Florida crackers – who were determined to subdue the wild and wonderful territory.

The Very Beginning Ais Indians – The First Residents

As early as 2,000 B.C., the hunter gatherer Ais Indians (name given by the Spanish) inhabited what is now St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Brevard counties. The Spanish called the river they lived along the Rio de Ais (today, the Indian River). The bounty of food in the environment – rich with fish, shellfish, turtle, sabal palm berries, cocoplums, other fruits – and even snakes, alligators and whales – allowed the Ais to grow and flourish for many years. The Ais were adept divers and had a unique way of subduing and killing whales for food. Friendly with the Spanish, the Ais were also enemies of Spain’s enemies. Ais legends include shipwrecked sailors being killed by – as well as being taken in by – them. In 1605, the Ais Indians even sent warriors to assist the Spanish campaign against the French. By the early 1700s, however, the Ais Indians were in their final days due to slave raids from the settlers of Carolina and the imported diseases – smallpox, measles, even the common cold – of the Europeans. By 1711 – their numbers had diminished dramatically – to under 150 members with the final death of the tribe in the mid-1740s. Some artifacts live on, however. You can see some of the Ais Indians shell and stone tools and pottery on display at the St. Lucie County Regional History Center. You can also check out a real Ais Indian mound on Indian River Drive, about one mile south of the St. Lucie County Courthouse.

The Naming of St. Lucie St. Lucie as we now know it has a history dating all the way back to 1565, as our name is thought to have originated from Fort Santa Lucia, built at the Jupiter Inlet by the Spaniards in that year. Santa Lucia, whose name means “light,” was a revered patron Christian saint who died as a virgin martyr under the third century Roman emperor Diocletian’s persecution of Christians. Construction of the fort began on Santa Lucia’s feast day, December 13, 1565. Two years later, Pedro Menendez de Aviles established the “Santa Lucia” colony between Stuart and Vero Beach.

A Spanish Shipwreck Creates the “Treasure Coast” In the early eighteenth century a famous shipwreck gave the tri-county region the name the Treasure Coast. At that time, Spain was sending an annual voyage with two fleets of ships to the Americas for gold, silver and other precious goods. On their return voyage, the ships would be heavily laden with these items. There were unexpected delays for the doomed return voyage in 1715. As the month of July closed that year, pressure was mounting to return to Spain after two years at sea. Royalty and merchants were clamoring for the money and goods. Thus the decision was made to set sail on the morning of July 24 – although hurricane season had started almost two months earlier, on June 1.

The weather was perfectly calm as the fleet set forth from Havana’s harbor on their way north up Florida’s east coast. In fact, the fleet enjoyed good weather for five days. Then, on July 29, long southeastern swells started to dip and roll the ship and the previously sunny weather turned hazy. Experienced sailors knew – these were the signs of tropical storm on its way. Midway up the coast of Florida by now, they had no way of knowing, until it was too late, that a powerful hurricane was bearing down on them. In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, July 31, 1715, the powerful winds drove the ships into the coast, smashing them into its rocky reefs. Over a thousand people were killed, about 1,500 shipwrecked, and millions of dollars in treasure was lost to the ocean floor. The estimated value of the fleet’s combined cargo? In 1975, about $86 million (the cargo would be worth much more today), according to historian Mendel Petersen’s book The Funnel of Gold. Although the Spanish set up salvage camps, and many treasure hunters since have found valuable ancient goods and medallions, many feel that treasure still lies beneath the warm seas of Florida’s Treasure Coast. The Seminoles Evolve Two key things happened that led to the naming of what is now the Seminole tribe: The Ais Indians entered their final days in the mid 1700s, and Florida was surrendered to Great Britain by the Spanish in 1763. After doing so, the Spanish took the remaining natives (few as they were) to Cuba. Native American tribes from other southeastern locations began to move into Florida to take their place. The Creek Indians from what is now Georgia and other tribes moved into Florida. Runaway slaves joined them – seeking refuge, some becoming slaves, some intermarrying – by the early 1800s. These people were called the Seminoles.

The name “Seminoles” is from the Spanish word “cimarrones,” which means “free people.” The Spanish called them this because they refused to be dominated by the Spanish or other Europeans. The Seminoles were to become the only American Indian tribe that did not sign a peace treaty. The tribe still exists today. In 1783, Spain once again regained control of Florida. Finally, they sold it to the United States in 1819.

A Time of War & the Birth of Fort Pierce
Now that the United States had purchased the territory of Florida, it became the scene of a power struggle between the Seminoles and the settlers, backed by the force of the United States Army and Navy. Thus, the early 1800s was the time of several wars between the United States and the Seminoles. The Second Seminole War was the most significant of the three wars. It broke out over the question of whether the Seminoles were to move West, out of their chosen homeland. The origins of the City of Fort Pierce, St. Lucie’s oldest city, also occurred during the Second Seminole War. The Seminoles had begun to attack the settlers in the mid-1830s which served to spark the second Seminole War in 1835. The United States sent the army into Florida territory to protect the settlers. The area was largely unexplored and unmapped so the Army hacked trails to establish connections between new military outposts in the wild. The hacked trails were later to become roads, used by settlers and even by people of today. On December 31, 1837, Benjamin Kendrick Pierce and his men, joined by Navy Lieutenant L.M. Powell, set up camp on the St. Lucie sea shore. Army Lt. Col. Pierce established Fort Pierce in 1837. (The remains of which can still be seen at the park on Indian River Drive). His mission was to select military depot sites along the Indian River.

Two days later that moved to the western side of the Indian river, approximately four miles south of the Fort Pierce inlet. They established Fort Pierce – a block house atop a bluff – in honor of their commander. The fort was active until 1842 when the Second Seminole War ended. During its life, the fort hosted famous Civil War generals Lieutenant William T. Sherman. In December 1843, the abandoned fort burned to the ground. You can still see the site and its remains in Old Fort Park along Indian River Drive. A replica of the fort and artifacts are on display at the St. Lucie County Regional History Center, along with a letter written by Benjamin Pierce. After the war ended, Fort Pierce became a permanent settlement. Eventually, in 1900, it was established as the City of Fort Pierce and is the county seat of St. Lucie.

Following the Second Seminole War the settlers turned their attention to industry. This was to come in the form of fish and fruit. In 1879, Captain Thomas E. Richards moved to the area. He remarked that the land looked like the “garden of Eden.” If that meant ripe for growing pineapples (and later oranges and grapefruits), he was right. He and other settlers began to plant the pineapples (called pines) and experiment with different varieties, such as Sugar Loaf, Egyptian Queens and Red Spanish (the most common). An estimated 2 million pineapples were growing just 10 years later. But that’s not the only claim to fame of the area. The waters of the Atlantic and the Indian River are especially bountiful with a wide variety of fish – not to mention ocean and wildlife as well. Settlers ate and sold the fish, the turtles, and the oysters. Mills Burnham shipped green turtles to Charleston, S.C. using wooden blocks to prop up their heads during shipment. Some settlers grew their own oyster beds. Oysters were sent by Colonel Titus to Titusville for the pur-

pose of seeding beds. The shells from the oysters were also used for roads. Fishing was a major business in St. Lucie by the turn of the century, in no short measure due to R.R. Ricou, who arrived in 1896. Eventually he had eight fish houses up and down the Atlantic coast of Florida. Fish dealers established numerous camps in Fort Pierce Inlet and along the Indian River. The fish industry employed many local residents.

Here Comes the Railroad In 1894, Henry Flagler extended his Florida railroad down along the eastern coast of Florida from its northern point in Jacksonville. Its tracks are still used today – see them as you explore Historic Downtown Fort Pierce. You can also step back in time as you step into the entrance to the St. Lucie County Regional History Center, which is a replica of the train station located along those tracks. The arrival of the railroad opened up the region to more people and provided for more industry and more jobs. Previously, most transportation – for people or goods – in and out of St. Lucie was by boat. Fort Pierce was designated as a division point by Mr. Flagler in 1911. After this the population exploded.

The First Store Comes to the Area “Everything to Eat, Wear and Use” – that was the slogan of the General Store. Originally, what is now the PP Cobb building was built in 1882 by the Hogg family and used as a canning plant. In 1896, Peter P. Cobb bought it and opened a General Store (Cobb’s General Store is still open today, though under new management!). Cobb also became the area’s first postmaster. You can view the antique post office boxes at the PP Cobb Building, open to the public in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce.

The building also featured a dock that Cobb continued to add on to until it extended 1200 feet into the river. Not only did steamers stop there, but Cobb’s dock is where residents came to gather and celebrate. And they still do, today. Marina Square, the location of Cobb’s dock, is active on weekends – and many weeknights, too –with festivities and festivals of every variety.
1900
The City of Fort Pierce is Established A petition signed by 26 men led to the July 1, 1905 formation of the City of Fort Pierce. It is also the county seat of St. Lucie. Edward Binney was one of the inventors and manufacturers of Crayola crayons. He also owned large groves of oranges and played a key role in St. Lucie County. He was the director of the St. Lucie County Bank and chairman of the board of the Fort Pierce Port Commission. Thanks in part to “substantial funding” from Binney, the east coast port of Fort Pierce opened in 1930. At the time, it is the only port between Jacksonville and Miami, a 300 mile stretch. He also built a large facility to store fruit prior to shipping. Today, the City of Fort Pierce still has a fabulous waterfront for all to enjoy, as well as quaint and charming historic districts with dining, shopping, and the historic Sunrise Theatre, fishing, boating, and museums and art galleries. The City of Port St. Lucie is Established Port St. Lucie was St. Lucie’s second, newest city. As late as the 1950s, what is now Port St. Lucie was untamed, virgin habitat with only a fishing camp and a few farms and business along the main corridor of U.S. 1. Enter General Development Corporation. General Development Corporation purchased thousands of acres for $50 million in 1958. One year later, they opened the first St. Lucie River bridge, opening up the city to automobile traffic.

Within two years 250 homes were built in Port St. Lucie. On April 27 of that year, Port St. Lucie became a city. Fast forward almost 40 years later. Today, this thriving city has a population of about 175,000 and is home to the one-of-a-kind, world class PGA Village, Digital Domian Park (spring training home of the NY Mets and home of the St. Lucie Mets), and the Florida Center for Innovation. A 150-acre research park in the master planned Tradition community, the Florida Center for Innovation is home to the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies headquarters – as well as the Oregon Health & Science University’s Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute, the Mann Research Center, and a Martin Memorial Health Systems campus. You’ve come a long way, St. Lucie! And as history continues to be made, may you continue to evolve!

St. Lucie Village Step Back in Time
Along the Indian River, just north of Fort Pierce, lies quaint St. Lucie Village. This historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. You’ll find 35 structures of historic interest dating back to the late Victorian era. This quiet residential neighborhood is a remnant of the town that grew up around Fort Capron – built in the 1850s during the third Seminole War. Although the fort is no longer, a stone monument marks the site at 3105 North Indian River Drive. With a population of approximately 600 people, St. Lucie Village encompasses 460 charming acres. Some families have resided in St. Lucie Village for over 100 years. The roads – established in the horse-and-buggy days – haven’t been widened – even though there isn’t enough room for two cars to pass each other. Yet the residents wouldn’t change it for a thing.

Treasure Coast wine and beer enthusiasts are in for a special treat at Vine & Barley. Located in St. Lucie West, this wine & beer lounge offers wine technology not available anywhere else locally. The concept, imported from Italy, allows you to choose from over 75 wines. Simply insert your pre-paid 'Wine Card' into any wine bottle station and pour yourself a glass, half glass, or 'just a taste' of wine. I enjoyed a number of wines and found the system to be quite simple and addictive, with the majority of wines ranging from $10 to $20 a bottle. The average 'taste' ranges from $1 to $2, and full glasses from $4 to $7. Out of over a dozen tastes of reds and whites, I found several to be memorable and purchased a bottle or two to take home. If you have ever gone cross eyed trying to pick out a bottle of wine to take home, and wished you could taste it before you purchased it, well now you can do just that at Vine & Barley. Beer lovers will also find some prized offerings with 24 beers draft beers on tap, and at least that many in bottles. These are beers not readily found on tap on The Treasure Coast. Not sure what to choose for your first round? Try a 'Flight of Four' beers for only $5.95. One very nice 'Around the World' flight of beers to try would consisted of Dogfish Head 90 Minute (an Imperial IPA), a Chimay (a Belgian Trappist Triple), a Reisdorf (a light German Kolsch), and a Terrapin Wake 'N Bake (an Imperial Oatmeal Coffee Stout). The Terrapin was one of the more distinct beers I have ever tasted, with notes of roasted malt and oatmeal, a rich and creamy body, and a strong background of coffee. New to Vine and Barley are GROWLERS. If you find a beer on tap that you would like to enjoy at home, just purchase a refillable Vine & Barley growler and refill anytime you wish. Vine & Barley is a warm, friendly, and comfortable atmosphere with a granite bar, leather sofa and chairs, bistro tables and free WiFi. This is not your typical smoked filled room, where you scream over a loud DJ either. Indoors at Vine & Barley is smoke-free with a nice array of soft
