What is Dokdo?

Dokdo is the Korean oldest vol-

canic island consisting of two islands.

Dokdo has a long history from 512 (early 6th century) according to ancient documents in the history of Korea. Since Dokdo is economically and geopolitically valued, it was designated as Natural Monument No.336 in 1982.

Fishes

A large quantity of fishes live near Dokdo island such as Alaska Pollack, Salmon, Sharks, and squid.

Birds

Dokdo is a shelter where birds ranging about 160 kinds can take a short break.

Resources

A great deal of underground resources are buried there.

Seaweeds

Under the sea, seaweeds such as kelp, conch, and abalone live in various places, too.

This island should be called Dokdo.

In Korean, 독도.

Korea keeps maintaining this island for a long time. It is also geographically closer to Korea.

History proves that it is definitely a Korean territory.

We have ancient documents that had proved that before you brought to San Francisco Peace Treaty.

Korean residents are currently living in Dokdo. They live there because it is obviously a Korean territory and also they live there to protect Dokdo.

Dokdo is a Korean territory from a long time ago.

However, there has been a dispute over the ownership of Dokdo Island between South Korea and Japan.

No, this island should be called Takeshima. In Japanese, 竹島.

There was no issue with this island being a Japanese territory according to San Francisco Peace Treaty.

It is just history. As long as international laws agreed, it should be our land.

This dispute has been a huge political issue in Korea and Japan.

But,

the fact is that many foreigners don’t even know what Dokdo is.

Thus, having an impactful logo for Dokdo with Roman alphabets will help a lot more people to remember that the name of this island is Dokdo.

Why logo with Roman alphabets?

For those who can’t read or understand either Korean or Japanese orthography and those who can read French, other Europeans and any European derived languages, are able to read Roman alphabets. Providing a translation into Roman orthography can help them understand easily that the name for this island is Dokdo.

Font 1 Korea Dokdo 독도체

Korea Dokdo is a display typeface that was designed for Dokdo island by Yun Design. Display typefaces often have more eccentric and variable designs than the simple, relatively restrained typefaces generally used for body text. It also uses the same calligraphic style for Latin alphabets. It expresses naturalness of Korean calligraphy. This calligraphic style font is featuring Dokdo being a lonely but solitary island. Rockiness that comes from this Korean calligraphic texture expresses Dokdo being a rocky island as well.

Since Korea Dokdo is a display font, there is no serif. But it makes various feelings such as rockiness and Korean calligraphic style. As you can see lower-case ‘k’ above, it has long descender which illustrates the Dokdo island standing still in solitude. In lower-case ‘l’, it has a tail pointing outward which adds more naturality in the calligraphy. This typeface with changes in thickness (contrast) of the letters and with oblique axis add more fun to read.

Font 2 Chosun Gs 조선궁서체 Chosun Gs is a Korean typeface that was designed by The Chosun Ilbo which is a leading newspaper in South Korea. It is also considered the oldest daily newspaper in the country. For Roman alphabets, it uses a typical old style serif forms because it has similar characteristics with Chosun Gs in Korean. Just like Latin old style serif font, Chosun Gs was inspired by the Korean calligraphy. This calligraphy style back then was written by brush which expresses seriousness to the text.

Chosun Gs is an old style serif typeface that uses a sloping cross-bar on the lowercase “e”, double-storey of lower-case ‘a’ and ‘g’. It also has moderate stroke contrast which makes letters look balanced and natural. It is very classical, soft and easy to read when used in the body text. It has a little longer x-height, but shorter ascender and descender.

Korean beautiful island, Dokdo Old Style serif font dates back to the 1400s, and were inspired by hand-lettered writings of the day.

Hunmin jeongeum is a geometric sans serif typeface designed by EBS which is a Korea Educational Broadcasting System. It has almost no contrast, big counter, and rational axis which allows more space to look more open. Each alphabet looks like it is drawn in a square which is a traditional way to write Korean alphabets. For making logo for Dokdo, this typeface not only expresses Korean language vibe but also it makes it clear, and easy to read. But geometric sans serif fonts look modern and minimal.

This typeface was inspired by the traditional calligraphy of Korean letter, but it makes the logo look empty.

Also, there are linguistic and structural differences between Korean and Roman alphabets, when this font is used for English logo, it does not have as much Korean vibe to English logo as used in Korean logo.

훈 민 정 음 King Sejong

Hunmin Jeongeum which is Korean language was invented by King Sejong during the Chosun Dynasty (1393-1910). During his reign, King Sejong always complain about the fact that the common people, who were ignorant of thousands of complicated Chinese characters, were not able to read and write.

So he created 11 vowels and 17 consonents that can be combined together to create words.

Like Korean, they made English alphabets also look very squared with big bowl to look spaced.

After Sejong died, the Sejong Geography Book was created in 1454 which was the first records that directly mention about Dokdo to the literature. In the content, it says “The two islands, Usan and Muleung are located near the ocean next to Uljin-hyeon Jeongdong. Those two islands are not far away from each other. When the weather is good, we can see them from Korean peninsula. In Silla (57~935), it was called Usan island, it is also called Ulleung island now.

This logo contains red and blue colours which indicate Korean flag and it emphasizes Dokdo is a Korean island.
