Bay Market Font: Integral CF Demi Bold Family: Geometric Sans-Serif Located: Off of Royal Ave and Bruce Street, beside the liqour store.
Our first stop in the Bay is the legendary “Bay Market”. This store has seemingly been around since the dawn of time itself. While the sign is plain, there is something to be said about simplicity. It gets the point across without beating around the bush or being too fancy for the subject. A convient store. There is clear emphasis on the word “market” made evident due to the weight of the font. It’s written in a Geometric Sans-Serif typeface whereas the “Bay” is more of a script which adds to this contrast.
Comunity Spirits Font: Bulletto Alto, potentially written in italics Family: Script typeface Location: just off of Royal Ave and Bruce Street in Horseshoe Bay
Community Spirits is fairly new compared to other shops in Horseshoe Bay. It first opened in 2016 and has been here since. The selection may be a little small for the more experienced drinkers, however theres enough of a variety for everyone else. I have always liked the logo as it is well balanced and the type adds to that, despite the low crossbars on the E’s and H. The store name is written in an almost itallic script typeface as the lines on the M’s are a tad slanted.
Horseshoe Bay Motel Font: Integral CF Demi Bold Family: Geometric Sans-Serif Located: Royal Ave, across the street from the liqour store Now if you were to look across the street from the liqour store, you would see the Horseshoe Bay Motel. Personally I have never stayed here. However, I think it’s a little worse for wear as of late. Regardless the sign is just as cool as ever. The barbed wire/thorn bush type at the top feels almost barbarian, which contrasts the very dull Geometric Sans-Serif font “motel” is written in.
Pudgies Pizza Font: TXT Antique Italic (Closest to the original) Family: Display Location: Royal Ave, beside a C-Lovers
There are two things that are assured in this life. Taxes, and Pudgies making some of the best pizza I have ever tried. The restaraunt has been open for roughly 25 years and is a Horseshoebay Landmark. If you’re ever in the area do yourself a favour and stop by. The sign is a blend of a transitional/display typeface. This font is appealing to look at as the balance between the thin and thick parts of the letters is very consistant. I also enjoy the very angry, tooth like serifs on the G, E, and S.
Bay Sushi Font: Comic Sans Family: Hand lettering (Very Causal) Location: Just down from Bruce Street and behind Pudgies Pizza
If you were to walk out the backdoor of Pudgies Pizza, and straight across the street you would find Bay Sushi. This Sushi restaraunt is notorious for it’s Comic Sans sign and highly varied reviews. Comic-sans can be described as a hand lettered typeface. Although much more casual. Despite the negative conotations behind comic sans, it is one of the most recognizable fonts in this day and age. In my mind this font adds to Bay Sushi’s image as it makes the store memorable. The uneven B, the childish forms, and ugly simplicity stick in ones head. The sign is unfortunatley unforgettable
Trolls Fish and Chips Font: London Heavy (closest thing to it) Family: Display Located: The corner of Royal Ave and Bay Street across the road from Starbucks. Trolls is a restaraunt/diner located off of Bay street. Next to the Ferry Terminal, it is probably the most well known aspect of Horseshoe Bay. The fish and chips are the reason you have probably heard of Trolls and part of the reason people come back to the Bay. The sign itself is somewhat off. The lowercase squished typeface look and slanted S deters me a bit. However it stands out amount the masses of other signs due to these factors. Not to mention the massive red letters at the front can be seen from middle of Howe Sound and act like a beacon for hungry travellers.
Bay Pharmacy Font: Cabernet JF Pro Family: Slab Serif/Display Located: On Bruce street just before the parking lot About three stores down from Bay Sushi is the local pharmacy. It is just off of Bruce Street. While it does look a little suspect, this pharmacy is actually a really good option if you need to quickly grab something, as it has all the essentials. The actual sign is very dull, however the banner they have near the back has really cool shapes and forms. The rounded serifs on R and the A are unique and stand out. The font is also well balanced and makes logicall sense. In that, the typeface looks like something a Pharmacy would use.
The Lookout Font: Worldwide Bold Condensed Family: Transitional Located: Just down from Bay Street, and to the right of the propellor The lookout is coffee shop located just down from Bay street and parked right on the waters edge. This was one of my Grandads favourite spots due to the amazing carrot cake, and view of Howe Sound. I really like this sign because of the carved out traditional lettering and the contrast between the wood and the letters. The wood also adds to the nostalgia I get when I look at it. I also enjoy the very long and sloped serifs on the T and L. The weight of the U however, throws off the balance a little bit. The sign has a transitional typeface with elements of display style fonts due to the weight of the letters and the exagerated serifs.
HSB Propeller Fountain Font: Bronzino Title Family: Transitional Location: At the bottom of Royal Avenue in the middle of everything
This Propeller monument/fountain located at the very bottom of Royal Ave. This statue is right in the middle of Horseshoe Bay, and the plaque can be found at the base of it. If you have ever walked around the bay, you will have seen it. On a sunny day it’s often surrounded by family’s drinking coffee and eating ice cream, the occasional busker, and flocks of seagulls. This is a transitional typeface as the certline of the O’s are vertical. I think plaques are faced with unique circumstances in regards to type. As they have to stay take natural forces such as rain, wind, snow etc. into account. This may be the reason there is very little change in the fonts used on plaques.
Revitalization Plaque Font: Bronzino Title Family: Transitional Located: Below Bay Street, beside the Propellor Fountatin
The last stop is Horseshoe Bay park and the Revitalization Plaque. Located just down from the propellor statue. This was put in to bring Horseshoe Bay into the municipality and help formalize the sale of products. This plaque is very well maintained as the gold is still polished. I like the contrast between colours aswell as the letters and numbers. The numbers of a front are interesting to look at aswell, the 3’s for instance have a really long bottom half but a squished top half. The R’s are interesting as they have an interesting serif on its leg. This type face has a very fluid feel to it due to therse elements.
Horseshoe Bay is a good place full of good people, good food and good vibes. Stop by sometime.
