Editorial Not the simplest equation:
Profitable growth as a goal – Change management as a challenge
T
he world economy is going through a time of increasing uncertainty. The US economy is still floundering and economic growth is also slowing down in developing countries. Even in China, the weak development of industrial production and exports is expected to lead to recovery measures. In Europe, depression has proved more insistent than expected in spite of the major support opera ons of the EU and the European Central Bank. Even major economic powers like France, Italy, UK and Spain are wriggling in their weakening economies, and the risk of infec on is threatening even Germany, the strongest economy in the EU. So far, Finland has managed fairly well in the interna onal economic turmoil. We should, however, remember that the welfare of Finland and the Finns depends on the compe veness of our industries, especially the export industry. In the 2000’s, the number of industrial jobs in Finland has decreased by a sixth as companies outsource their opera ons to countries where costs are lower. Our industrial founda on will disintegrate if we are not able to ensure a moderate pay policy, more flexible labour regula ons, and compe ve taxa on encouraging investments. The uncertainty of the world economy and the con nuous market turmoil bring more than enough challenges to companies as they develop their ac vi es, trying to forecast the changes that will affect their opera ng environment. Comatec has also had to think of ways to respond to the challenges of the con nuously changing opera ng environment. We are convinced that high-quality engineering exper se will be needed also in the future to solve problems related to logis cs, civil engineering, technology innova ons, environment, and energy economy. We at Comatec have a strong belief in what we do and a will to succeed in the changing world. Therefore, we have implemented an excep onally wide business development
programme, NewCom, in the Comatec Group during the past two years. In the programme, the emphasis has been on new opera onal models, systems and tools, exper se, and the development our personnel. We have also created a new exper se-based business line organisa on to be able to meet the most demanding special needs of our clients opera ng in the various industries. We believe that the exper se-based organisa on, which will take effect at the beginning of 2013, will strengthen our current partnership concept, which is based on long-term strategic client rela onships and high level of exper se. The new opera onal model will allow us to take on increasingly demanding project and design assignments and execute our mission of ”helping our clients to manufacture capital goods in a profitable manner”. Comatec’s strategic goal is profitable growth. The goal requires both organic growth and growth through corporate acquisi ons. This year, Comatec’s net sales have developed as planned and the number of personnel has increased by almost one hundred new employees. Comatec has strengthened its presence in northern Finland by acquiring majority holding in Oucons Oy. Oucons is renowned as an experienced project company. It has a proven track record in the design of demanding mass product transporta on systems, and consequently it plays an important role as a service provider in the mining industry. The acquisi on of Engineering Office Keijo Kärki located in Järvenpää will add to Comatec’s exper se in industrial produc on systems in the Central Uusimaa and the Capital areas. At the moment, the Comatec Group has 12 offices in Finland and one in Tallinn. I send all Comatec Group’s clients and partners Season’s Gree ngs and best wishes for the New Year 2013 in the words of the famous novelist Maxim Gorky ”When work is a pleasure, life is a joy! When work is a duty, life is slavery.”

wCom Programme completed Comatec has just completed a major two-year development programme, NewCom, headed by Kari Kärkkäinen. The business environment and the clients’ needs and expecta ons change, and the aim of this development programme was to help Comatec meet the clients’ requirements be er than before. NewCom has already brought about concrete changes in our opera onal ac vi es. The final report has been handed over but rolling out the results will con nue for quite a long me. TEXT BY TAINA SYRJÄNEN
Engineer Kari Kärkkäinen joined Comatec in June 2004 as Engineering Manager in the Machinery Department. When the company grew, his area of responsibili es extended to mobile machinery. Since spring 2005, Kari has worked as Department Manager of the Mobile Machinery Department. As from August 2010 he also headed the NewCom Programme, which was completed in October 2012. The final report was handed over recently. Kari Kärkkäinen was in charge of the NewCom Programme all the me. In early 2010, the Comatec Board prepared the NewCom Programme and a funding applica on to be submi ed to Tekes - the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innova on. Funding was granted in summer 2010, and the programme was launched in August the same year.
– The total budget of the NewCom Programme was about EUR 700 000. The size of the follow-up investments in systems and development of exper se on the basis of the results of the NewCom Programme will be the same as the budget of the whole NewCom Programme or even bigger. We are therefore talking about an extremely significant investment in the development of the company’s ac vi es Kari Kärkkäinen states. – The NewCom Programme was based on the reassessment of Comatec’s strategy carried out by Comatec’s Board of Directors in autumn 2009. Comatec’s future goals include controlled and profitable interna onalisa on and growth by developing project management services to complement the company’s resourcing business ac vi es. The NewCom Programme supports our strategic goals, Kärkkäinen says. – The NewCom Programme was given two years to complete, and we kept to the schedule. – During the two years, I used about half of my working hours on managing the NewCom Programme and the other half on my tasks as Department Manager. – NewCom had 11 working groups, which operated as separate projects and completed their work at different mes. The par cipants also included a total of 13 external partners, both small and medium sized companies, as well as research ins tutes, Kari con nues. The NewCom Programme consisted of four major themes on which the work of the work groups was focused. The themes were as follows: development at the client interface, personnel’s
competencies and skills, development of data systems, and leadership and organisa on. – All in all, the development programme was a great success. We achieved about 95 percent of our original objec ves, and the rest will be implemented as follow-up projects a er the NewCom Programme, Kari adds. – The concrete results of the NewCom Programme include the crea on of a exper se map, analysis of the competencies, and plans for various coaching and training programmes, for instance coaching programmes for project managers. – The world changes, but we at Comatec have always believed in our exper se and the compe ve edge it gives us. Therefore, we also invest heavily in it, Kari emphasises. – We have analysed our internal data systems and IT architecture, and improvement proposals have been made to make them serve the monitoring of project ac vi es and repor ng be er than before. The NewCom Programme is completed now, but rolling out its results in the opera onal ac vi es will con nue for a long me. Followup investments will be made, and a significant renova on will be the new business line and exper se area based organisa on to be published on 1 January 2013. – A significant feature in this renova on, which is a result of the NewCom Programme, is that the objec ve of crea ng 30 new jobs was achieved. The number of new jobs created this year is 85. The renova on has given many new opportuni es to our employees.

As to the world of science, maybe the most interes ng scien fic instrument at CERN today is the world’s biggest par cle accelerator, Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which has been opera onal since 2008.
CERN is located near Geneva in Switzerland, on the French border. It is the par cle physics laboratory of the European Organiza on for Nuclear Research. During its 60 years of existence, CERN’s laboratory has been the place where most of the modern par cle physics phenomena have
In general, research at CERN focuses on ma er: how it was created and what forces keep it from falling apart. By colliding par cles at extremely high speeds, very close to the speed of light, the scien sts at CERN aim at repea ng the events that created the universe. These reac ons produce informa on on both fundamental par cles and on the whole universe.

On 4 July 2012 CERN informed the world of observing a par cle consistent with the Higgs boson with LHC . So far, the Higgs par cle has only existed in theory in spite of almost fi y years of research to discover it. The observa on is fairly certain even if there are s ll several uncertain es. CLIC (Compact Linear Collider) is a next genera on linear collider being implemented at CERN. It will be a 48 kilometre long structure of special precision. The first phase will be 13 kilometre long, and a er the second phase, the length will be about 48 kilometres. CLIC has been designed and developed since 1999. Its conceptual design was completed in 2012, and it is expected to be fully completed some me a er 2020. - The collider consists of approximately two-metre long modules consis ng of accelera ng

- The precision requirements of the module structure are extremely high. The tolerances are ght and the posi oning of the parts must be made at a micro-metric precision.
- We plan to start a follow-up project on the basis of Lauri’s master’s thesis with the aim of mass manufacturing accelerator modules in micrometer precision, states ArƩu LaiƟnen, Business Unit Manager, Expert Services.
- Thermomechanic modelling aims at establishing how heat expansion caused by temperature varia on affects the structure of the module and the mo on of the beam.
- The exper se of the companies that par cipate in the project focuses on modelling, manufacturing challenges, material technology, assembly design and soldering technology.
CERN has about 2500 regular employees and around 7000 researchers work there every year. More than one third of the world’s experimental par cle physics experts work at or cooperate with CERN. More than twenty European countries are official members in the organisa on. Finland became a member in 1991.
The most significant difference between the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is in the par cles that are collided in them. In CLIC, the purpose is to collide point-like electrons and positrons, whereas in LHC, it is protons that are collided. The size of

Development of intelligent motion control – latest technology In the past few years, Comatec has made significant investments in a new area of exper se, intelligent and energy-efficient mo on control. Mo on control is an area of exper se that deals with the development of the power transmission systems of mobile machinery by means of various techniques, for instance digital hydraulics. The u lisa on of digital hydraulics in mo on control applica ons is a new research area worldwide. Intensive research only goes back a few years, but the first applica ons have already been produced, and several new projects are underway. A few concrete projects have already been implemented in e.g. the paper industry. TEXT BY HEIKKI HARRI
– We are con nuously on the lookout for new ac vi es and ways to develop our client services. The purpose of our Mo on Control Exper se Centre is to provide our clients with such services that few of them would be able to develop themselves, says Arto Timperi, Engineering Manager at the Mobile Work Machinery Department. – It is quite certain that the new digital mo on control methods will bring significant changes to working with mobile work machinery in terms of both their opera ng principles and economy, he con nues. Comatec has recruited a group of the best in the industry in the whole country. Finland is one of the leading countries in the whole world in the

A conference on mo on control and digital hydraulics was held in Tampere in October. The conference was par cipated about one hundred experts from around the world. During a break, Comatec’s Jukka-Pekka Uusitalo (le ) and Hannu Vihtanen (right) had a chance to talk to Professor Rudolf Scheidl from Austria. area of mo on control research and development, which means that Finnish experts in the industry are among the best in the world. – The fact is that the most advanced research takes place in two places. One of them is the Tampere University of Technology, Finland, and the other is the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. Mo on control and digital hydraulics research naturally takes place also in other universi es, but not at such a large scale as in these two universi es, Arto Timperi adds.
”Win-win” – For clients Comatec’s exper se brings several advantages. The first, of course, is that the clients need not make such investments in the
development of mo on control exper se themselves as they would have to without an external partner. Instead, they can concentrate on their core exper se, i.e. the development of more and more customer-oriented machines and the op misa on of new technologies in the construc on of machine parts, Arto Timperi emphasises. On the other hand, Comatec is able to serve its clients in an op mal manner by offering its own special exper se on a long term basis. This exper se is part of Comatec’s core business. The modelling, simula on, measurement and analysis services provided by Comatec bring addi onal value to its clients. – For the clients, coopera on also means decrease in design costs, as
design is carried out in an efficient way u lising the best prac ces, resources and tools. It is therefore quite probable that the delivery schedules of the projects will be shorter, Timperi emphasises and con nues that another benefit to the clients is that Comatec is also able to help them be er in backlog situa ons. Coopera on also brings benefits to Comatec: – Profound coopera on with our clients in their projects brings new knowledge to us, as well. Digital mo on control is s ll in the early phase of its life cycle, and all the par es involved in its development learn new things and gain new perspec ves. This, if anything, is a pure win-win situa on, Timperi states.
ExperƟse centre of five experts The Mo on Control Exper se Centre established by Comatec has five Finnish top experts working in it. Apart from Arto Timperi, the other team members are Jukka-Pekka Uusitalo, Hannu Vihtanen, Vesa Aarni
and Suvi Westerlund. Vesa Aarni is located in Kuopio, the others in Tampere. – This team is able to offer our clients such mo on control exper se that is not available anywhere in Finland, Arto Timperi assures. The work of the Exper se Centre is naturally supported by our other experienced automa on and hydraulics experts. In addi on to exper se, Comatec also offers its clients strategic partnership based on mutual trust and confiden ality. – Our Mo on Control Exper se Centre is fairly new. Our aim is to strengthen and diversify its ac vi es in the near future. We will also develop networkbased coopera on with new partners. This means that Comatec will have something completely new to offer to its clients. We will apply the research results of the latest technology in a client-oriented manner, especially in view of cost efficiency, Arto Timperi states.

In intelligent moƟon control, the principles of digital hydraulics are observed without forge ng tradi onal analogue hydraulics: a modular structure allows a simpler hydraulic system in which the varia on of hydraulic components is minimized in a cost efficient way. Intelligent control makes it possible to adjust the procedures in an energy efficient way at an op mal point for the applica on concerned.

that u lising digital hydraulics in the machines they manufacture is a profitable investment, state JukkaPekka Uusitalo and Hannu Vihtanen, the two newcomers in Comatec’s mo on control team. Jukka-Pekka and Hannu both belong to the few experts that we have in the field of digital hydraulics in Finland at the moment. The number of actors in the field is not very large in the
whole world, but Finland is one of the leading countries in the research and development of digital hydraulics. Both Jukka-Pekka and Hannu possess as long- me experience as one can have in this special field of exper se. When they were s ll students at university, they became interested in the world of mo on control and now it is their everyday work. – The star ng point is the analysis of
client needs. In Finland, the number of actors in the field is so small that finding poten al clients is not a problem. The clients are there, and our job is to have them involved to be able to offer them solu ons in the future, Uusitalo and Vihtanen con nue.
Intensive studies at the background Both Jukka-Pekka Uusitalo and Hannu Vihtanen studied at the Tampere University of Technology, which is one of the world’s top research ins tutes in digital hydraulics. Jukka-Pekka, aged 32, is a Doctor of Science in Technology. He started his studies at the Tampere University of Technology in 2000, completed a master’s degree in 2006, and con nued his studies towards a doctoral degree in the field of electrophysics and electromagne cs. In 2010, he completed a doctoral degree. The tle of his doctoral disserta on was “A Novel Digital Hydraulic Valve Package: A Fast and Small Mul physics Design”. – Research on digital hydraulics started at the Tampere University of Technology at the turn of the millennium. One of the observa ons
was that the valves were too large. My master’s thesis assignment was to study the reduc on of valves in coopera on with the electromagne c research unit of the university. The work con nued as a doctoral disserta on, Uusitalo describes. Jukka-Pekka’s research on mo on control and its development now con nues as Comatec’s technology expert in close coopera on with the clients. Hannu Vihtanen, aged 30, works at Comatec as a project engineer. He started his studies at the Tampere University of Technology in 2001 and completed a M.Sc. degree in automa on technology, with machine automa on as his major in 2010. Towards the end of his studies, he was engaged in research and development work at the Department of Hydraulics and Automa on of the Tampere University of Technology and his research work included the possibili es that mul -chamber cylinder technology offers for digital hydraulics applica ons.
system design and coding. – I hope my experience will be useful when we face new challenges. Our aim is to work with our clients and develop new energy-efficient approaches to mo on control on the clients’ own terms, Hannu Vihtanen states.
Comatec’s intelligent moƟon control uƟlises the best features of hydraulics Comatec’s vision is to u lize the state combina ons of both analog and discrete-valued hydraulic components in mo on control and power transmission. The variables to be op mised may be energy consump on, posi oning, simplicity of the system, fault tolerance, or a variable defined by the client.
Through his studies and work, Hannu accumulated extensive and diverse experience in mo on control design, modelling and simula on, prototype conceptualisa on, as well as control

Outokumpu’s Tornio plant is located in Räy älä at the mouth of River Tornionjoki on the Bay of Bothnia. The plant produces ferrochrome and various kinds of hot or cold rolled stainless or acid-resistant steel coils, sheets and plates. To double the produc on of ferrochrome, the plant has been expanded by building a new smelter and sintering plant. In 2011, Tormets Oy from Tornio was commissioned to implement a conveyor system for the whole ferrochrome produc on. In this project called F3 Project, Tormets’s partner in the design of the conveyor was Oucons Oy, with which mutual coopera on dated back a long me. TEXT BY TAINA SYRJÄNEN
– We chose Oucons as a partner for this project, because we knew we could count on their project exper se concerning ferrochrome and the sintering plant, says Tormets’s CEO Kari Rantamaa. – As a ma er of fact, also Outokumpu had a full confidence in Oucons’s exper se, and Oucons’s par cipa on in the project was a significant factor when the decision to commission the project to us was made.

Outokumpu, Tormets and Oucons have a long-term coopera on rela onship da ng back to the 1980’s, when the first conveyor projects were implemented. There was already strong mutual confidence among the par es that coopera on would work. – Everything has gone as planned. Oucons’s exper se has been highly valued, Rantamaa states. – Some of the belt conveyors
veyor system for a ferrochrome plant designed by Oucons were installed indoors, some of them outdoors. The widths of the belts vary from 650 to 2200 millimetres. The longest conveyor that transfers raw materials from the dosing sta on to the smelter is 307 metres long and the hois ng height is 57 metres. This conveyor, which was installed on a thermally insulated bridge equipped with a maintenance corridor, was part of the design project, Jorma Väänänen describes Oucons’s contribu on to the project. – Planning in the tender phase, during which Oucons Oy prepared the technical specifica ons, power and
mass calcula ons and component lists, took place in December 2010. – The actual layout and founda on design was started in January 2011, and most of it was completed in May. Work on the technical drawings of the first conveyors for the smelter was started at the same me, Jorma Väänänen con nues. The design work was carried out in teams of 4-6 designers and the work took about one and a half years.
– As to Tormets, the project has taken two and a half years, and there is s ll some work to be done, Rantamaa states. – In terms of me, extent and money, this has been the largest project that Tormets has completed in its history. In 2011, the value of the deal was more than our turnover, and the project has taken about half of our capacity for two and a half years.
Oucons’s share of the project, including documenta on, was completed in September 2012. By now, the new part of the plant is already in use.
