ENGINEERING DESIGN – THE BIG PICTURE For those of us working in engineering design, the ability to tune into new frequencies, to be a visionary, is extremely important. We must be able to see things near and far – simultaneously. We must piece together the changes that have taken place in our industry, and understand the whole picture. We need sharp vision to see what is near, because our designs must be innovative, their implementation must work right away, and it must be possible to integrate them productively with what already exists. At the same time, far-sightedness is also needed – sustainable solutions, preferably ahead of their time. It is often said that 70 % of a product’s costs arise on the designer’s desk, even before the first purchasing decision. Well executed preliminary and detail engineering designs are the prerequisites for a successful project. Not a single train will move or ship sail without careful automation design, and behind each boiler plant and mobile machine there are thousands of working hours spent on innovative mechanics and structural design, as well as successful project management. Rantotek Oy, part of Comatec Group, is an energy sector expert with special competence in steam boiler plants and pressure vessels and high-pressure pipes for these, and other vessels. Rantotek is involved in projects from the decision to make a boiler plant investment through to commissioning.
