I am pleased to mark the 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), and to acknowledge its longstanding contribution to the Commonwealth’s professional and civic landscape.
Sinceitsfoundingin1965,theCAAhasplayedavaluableroleinfostering collaboration among architects across our member states. Its work has helped advance dialogue on sustainable urban development, professionalstandards, andtheimportanceofinclusivedesigninshaping resilient communities.
The CAA was a founding member of the Commonwealth Sustainable Cities Initiative, which has brought together a wide range of stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities of urbanisation. This work was formally recognised when Commonwealth Heads of Government adopted the Declaration on Sustainable Urbanisation in 2022 – affirming the importance of integrated planning, climate resilience, and equitable access to urban infrastructure.
The CAA’s role in helping to co-found the Commonwealth Youth for Sustainable Urbanisation (CYSU) network is equally noteworthy. With 60% of the Commonwealth’s population under the age of 30, this initiative reflects a vital commitment to ensuring that young people have a meaningful voice in shaping the cities of tomorrow. Their perspectives, energy, and innovation are essential to building inclusive and future-ready urban environments.
As cities continue to grow and environmental pressures intensify, the expertise of built environment professionals will remain essential. The CAA’s efforts to strengthen capacity, share knowledge, and support ethical practice are timely and appreciated.
On behalf of the Commonwealth Secretariat, I extend my thanks to the CAA’s leadership, members, and partners for their service over the past six decades. We look forward to continued partnership to support sustainable, inclusive, and well-planned communities across the Commonwealth.
Hon. Shirley Botchwey Commonwealth Secretary-General
