Dear CSG Community, At Columbus School for Girls, excellence is not a finish line but a practice of becoming.

Every day, our students step into classrooms, studios, stages, laboratories, and the wider world not to perform a polished identity but to grow into one. Here, excellence is cultivated through courage: the courage to try, to stretch, to iterate, and to become more fully oneself.

This year’s school-wide theme, “Elevate Excellence,” builds on that foundation. It reminds us that excellence is not perfection, it is formation. It is disciplined imagination, joyful rigor, and deep engagement with ideas, people, and possibility. Our girls learn that voice is something you build through practice, identity is something you grow into through reflection, and confidence is something strengthened through risk-taking and mentorship.

At CSG, we see this beautifully in the arts, where girls learn to experiment, collaborate, and express their inner lives through creative work. We see it in the Senior May Program, where our oldest students take their learning

off campus and discover that excellence flourishes when purpose meets opportunity.

And you see it across every division, where rest, reflection, and student belonging create the conditions for authentic learning to take root.

At CSG, we elevate excellence through possibility, through community and by giving girls space to become powerful. Our mission has always been to empower girls in their distinct potential, growing the kind of confidence that lasts: the kind born from voice, agency, and lived experience. We remain rooted in legacy and boldly focused on what comes next because when girls are given room to grow, they rise.

THE ART OF BEING A UNICORN At CSG, creativity reaches across campus

On a September afternoon, CSG’s junior class arrived at the Stratford Festival, a classical repertory theater company in Canada that focuses on Shakespeare.

The group had embarked on a busy trip: Their agenda featured three full plays— including Macbeth, which they recently studied in English class—as well as educational workshops, Q&As with actors and a bit of time to explore Stratford, Ontario. In formal discussions and casual chats over hotel breakfast, the students talked about how a feminist interpretation of The Odyssey and resetting Macbeth in a 1990s biker war presented the historic works in a new light.

“We try to give them a sense of what it means to see a play come along onstage,” says Dr. Meghan Hattaway P’33, Upper School Dean of Students.

“Even students who don’t think of themselves as actors get a chance to play around with a new form of expression or a new way to engage with a text they have to read in class.”

For girls developing their own creative practices, a two-day immersion in the Stratford Festival is a 5

chance to see inside what it takes to bring a play to life. But more universally, the annual field trip highlights CSG’s commitment to fostering personal expression, exploring identity and developing critical-thinking skills through the arts.

Whether a Unicorn takes up music, theater or visual art as her medium for artistic creation, the practice uncovers tools that will serve her throughout adulthood.

ACT I: FIND YOUR VOICE Arts education begins early at CSG, woven into the PYC and Lower School curricula. Students practice observational skills by drawing and explaining in real time what they see, or they simply move through space to the beat of their own drum.

Theater offers a point of connection to lessons of history and narrative. This year, the Form IV production features a collection of Yiddish, African, Indian and Eastern European folktales, building on a classroom unit about different cultures. Students also explore different stage roles, from acting to critical but invisible tasks such as running lights and managing costumes.

Bishara says exercises like these help students develop their capacity for empathy, emotional intelligence and collaboration.

“We don’t do anything alone in theater,” she adds. “It forces them to collaborate with people and to express emotions, and to learn how to recognize those emotions in a person’s posture and tone of voice.”

Last year’s Form IV play, “The Princess and the Princess,” told the story of two young girls—one poor and polite, one rich and rude—who come face-to-face on a narrow mountain path. Neither lets the other one pass. Everyone who attempts to help ends up stuck as well, until one princess decides to step aside.

Maleia Smith ’33 and Margot Hattaway ’33 played the titular princesses.

“It’s nice to be a different character,” Smith says.

“You get to express their emotions and be funny.”

As friends and classmates, it was sometimes difficult for the girls to play the role of arguing princesses.

Theater teacher Elizabeth Bishara ’00, P’35 encouraged them to imagine their character’s likes and dislikes, their preferred breakfast, how they might express their anger and other qualities hidden between the lines of the play.

“It helped me think like I was my character,” Hattaway says.

ACT II: DISCOVER YOUR MUSE As Middle School approaches, CSG students begin to develop individual artistic identities: choosing between theater or tech, zeroing in on a type of visual art or deciding which musical instrument fits their personality.

Students first rotate through musical ensembles in third grade, when every CSG student learns a string instrument with Agnes Becker, Director of Strings.

In subsequent years, musical opportunities expand to choir and band.

Learning an instrument builds on the playful music making of early elementary but now requires students to use their whole body and mind.

“They have to read the music and process it. Their brain is making connections it doesn’t make in any other activity,” says Kristen Cook, Director of Bands. “It’s so important for their development.”

Cook says this is when many students develop an affinity for one group over another.

“They start to ask, ‘Who am I?’ ” she says. “Each ensemble and instrument has its own identity, and students start to identify as a band kid or a percussion kid or a viola kid.”

Tessa Steere ’26 started the piano at age 5 or 6, then played the cello before switching to trombone.

She is also involved in theater.

“I loved playing the cello, but during a combined concert, I heard the band play and I was amazed,” she says. “All of the instruments were so beautiful and blended so well together, and I wanted to be a part of it.”

ACT III: BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE As the junior class visited the Stratford Festival, CSG sophomores were strolling the Cleveland Museum of Art and taking in a performance by the Cleveland Orchestra. For some, it was a glimpse of possible futures as they refine their artistic craft.

As the Upper School art teacher, Susan O’Connor introduces CSG students to a range of traditional formats, encouraging them to find which speaks to them. She rotates each year between “dirty” media, such as ceramics and sculpture, and “clean” media,

such as painting and drawing. O’Connor touches on the history of each but quickly makes connections to contemporary artists.

Whether a career in the arts is on the horizon for any given student, O’Connor says the arts provide a multitude of life lessons.

“To generate curiosity and originality,” she says, “they have to learn to do things ‘the right way’ and then learn how to break those rules.”

“I love hearing about alumnae who are student artists or interior designers or fashion designers," she says, “but there are some who will never touch a paintbrush or camera again.

In her advanced portfolio and AP art classes, O’Connor helps especially talented students build a full body of work and submit to exhibitions and galleries around Columbus. These shows are a chance for young adults to get their feet wet in the professional art world and to begin to see how their work can live beyond the walls of CSG. Taylor Clingman ’26 remembers sketching her ideas in the Program for Young Children. She’s now creating her own themed work in AP Studio Art. Clingman plans to direct her creativity into becoming an architect, something she’s been able to explore at CSG. “In my advanced sculpture class, I’ve been able to create sculptures that bring life to the arts—whether it’s something that could be lived in, or something that seems to be alive itself,” she says. “Last year, I worked with Ms. O’Connor and Dr. [Stephen] Lewis [Upper School math faculty] to practice architectural sketching, dive deeper into point perspectives and study architects.”

“The hope is that we’re fostering an environment where the arts are accessible at any level, that they can appreciate art, and that they can walk into a gallery or watch a TV show and think about what they see.”

DRIVEN BY PASSION, SUPPORTED BY COMMUNITY Senior May Program Approaches Its Diamond Anniversary of Off-Campus Education

For nearly six decades, Columbus School for Girls seniors on the cusp of graduation have taken part in the school’s signature Senior May Program (SMP). In leaving campus to pursue a project that excites them, students learn new skills, of course. But more than that, they make new connections with people who want to help them grow.

Seniors start working on their SMP project in the fall, when they must meet benchmarks like securing a sponsor and proposing a project plan. These to-dos are more than a precursor to the experience; they’re an essential part of the learning process.

In 2023, she designed a rotation for 11 students, including her daughter Jacey Cassandra ’23.

Each spent time with 20 physicians across specialties, in addition to behind-the-scenes experiences at hospitals and medical schools.

Every physician was a CSG alumna or parent, proving the power of the school’s connective tissue. A group of CSG alumnae who are medical students took time to meet with the group and to share tips about making the most of undergrad!

“It was such a labor of love, and it was so worth it.

Many meaningful mentorships developed out of this program, and most of these students have remained in touch with these physicians after graduation,” Marya says.

SMP captures so much of what CSG is all about. Students follow their curiosity, work with passion, and learn how impactful mentorship can be. They discover more about their own distinct potential—and about the power of the community surrounding them.

Rose McLarty ’25 knew she wanted to explore the fashion industry when she started contacting potential SMP hosts last fall. She soon discovered that, even when she heard “no,” the outreach was still meaningful.

“Some of the most valuable conversations, ones where I was given the best career advice and support, were from the ones who were unable to offer me an internship at that time,” Rose says. “Through reaching out to a variety of people, I met some of the coolest individuals, gained mentors and overall learned so much about the industry and what a career could look like in fashion.”

Rose spent time with three different fashion businesses in the Columbus area: shadowing at the Abercrombie & Fitch headquarters; seeing how costumes are altered in the costume shop of BalletMet; and learning about sustainable fashion and small business operations at Pivot, a women’s clothing boutique owned by Nicci Hicks P ’32, a CSG trustee.

SMP is able to facilitate such eye-opening experiences because of community members who support the soon-tobe graduates. The roster of hosts includes CSG alumnae and parents, local business owners and far-flung connections who welcome students.

“There are so many parents and alumnae out here willing to give a helping hand!” says Marya Goldberg Cassandra ’92, a dermatologist who has hosted students several times at her clinic, Signature Dermatology.

SHE ALSO WILL PAUSE CSG sets a priority on rest and reflection

At Columbus School for Girls, faculty and staff are committed to discovering and nurturing each student’s distinct potential as a learner and a leader. One way we pursue this is by prioritizing rest and reflection within the academic day.

Research shows, and our experience has confirmed, that such an emphasis helps young people strengthen their sense of self and identity, especially when it is introduced at the earliest stages of learning.

Reflective exercises such as journaling or guided reflection empower students to connect with their inner selves as a method of clarifying values, beliefs and goals. All the while, young people foster emotional growth and resilience, laying the groundwork for confident self-awareness. Greater empathy and coping strategies also result.

Sleep, the most tangible and essential form of rest, is directly tied to nearly every aspect of our health and well-being.

This is an age of sleep deprivation, and studies have linked insufficient sleep in children to several worrisome trends: decreased working memory, impaired decision-making and increased vulnerability to mental health challenges.

But rest can recharge a young body, even without REM cycles. Our Program for Young Children (PYC) dedicates 11 11

an hour of each afternoon to quietude. This is not simply “nap time,” although students may elect to snatch 40 winks.

Instead, the purpose is to normalize and routinize rest. As youngsters lie quietly on their mats, their brains are taking stock of the class day and processing all that information.

A rested child is a happier child — and also a healthier one: The ability to regulate emotions and interact positively with others is tied closely to how rested one is.

Just as the PYC makes a habit of rest, it also does the same with self-reflection through a regular practice it calls “body routine.”

Tammy Pedon, a 3/4 teacher in PYC, defines body routine as allowing children "to take a moment to listen to their body, reflect on what and how they are feeling, and then make decisions based on those feelings and needs.”

This self-assessment may coincide with — or lead to — a bathroom break, but it could just as easily happen during lunch, at recess or other times.

“Even as adults,“ Tammy adds, ”humans are often taught or expected to ignore when our body lets us know what it needs.”

too, if they like, through small changes at home.

For example, introducing a Question of the Day practice could promote great conversations. “If you could pick up a skill at an instant, what would it be and why?”

“If our pet could talk, what do you think they would say?” “What characteristics make a great friend?” Such open-ended questions can be as silly or as serious as one wants. Try it over dinner or just before bedtime.

Or, a family could embrace a weekly Screen-Free Evening that places a puzzle, a board game or a craft as the focal point. As everyone works together, the moment is ripe for sharing idle questions, observations and jokes.

As with rest time, body routine serves to create a habit without explicitly drawing attention to it. In these moments, reflection is happening — quietly, naturally and often without the students even realizing it.

The practices of PYC are expanded in Lower School, where morning meetings, journaling and sharing in class are tools to help students process experiences and emotions. These routines lift up both curiosity and introspection as values that active learners embrace.

At Columbus School for Girls, we recognize rest and reflection as foundational for children, part of the architecture that supports their growth toward becoming self-assured, thoughtful young adults. Deciding in their own minds the things that matter is how CSG students become empowered to thrive, not just succeed.

Lower School faculty model reflective thinking by engaging in open-ended conversations and asking thoughtful questions. Each student is encouraged and empowered to contribute to the rollicking discussion.

The Lower School balances increasing academic demands with opportunities for unstructured play, through two recess periods each day. These provide the space for creativity, problem-solving and social interaction. Studies show that free play enhances cognitive flexibility and executive functioning, crucial elements for academic success.

The common road through both divisions is educators embedding reflection into everyday interactions.

A NEW ERA OF EXCELLENCE Evolution of the Upper School Delivers Empowerment and Pride

For generations, Columbus School for Girls’ Upper School has stood as a cornerstone of academic excellence, leadership, and opportunity; a place where young women are challenged to think deeply, act boldly, and lead with purpose.

That legacy has not only endured but expanded: In recent years, a new era of excellence has been marked by innovation, collaboration, and joy. The Upper School today reflects the very best of CSG’s mission: empowering girls to discover their distinct potential as learners and leaders.

“School should be a place where hard work and joy live side by side,” Upper School Director Scott Parsons says. “The academic program has always been a strength at CSG. What we wanted to do was make sure students connected that with a sense of excitement to be part of this experience.”

This strength is evident: Enrollment in the Upper School has grown by 7%, school spirit has soared, and students express pride in calling themselves CSG Upper Schoolers.

Enthusiasm for global travel programs, new electives, and cross-disciplinary learning is on the rise.

Students are also offered many leadership opportunities, both in and out of the classroom. Yinan Chen ’26 says the challenging curriculum and supportive community helped prepare her to address the first annual Community Partners Breakfast, which brought together local female professionals and Upper School students for networking and conversation.

Speaking before a school event had long been a goal of Yinan’s since she came to CSG in Form VI. That first year, “when I saw the seniors give their speeches for the Thanksgiving program, I thought to myself, ‘Oh, how cool would it be if I could do that.’ For me to get the opportunity to give a speech was very rewarding,” Yinan says.

Parsons’s leadership also reshaped the school’s advisory program, a cornerstone of CSG’s focus on belonging and well-being. Students now remain with the same advisor for four years, meeting daily to start their mornings in connection and community.

Upper School Dean of Students Dr. Meghan Hattaway P’33 says the changes allow advisories to deepen their connections and for their faculty leaders to be the primary “knower” of those students. Every Middle and Upper School student now spends the first 10 minutes of each day with their advisory group. This Morning Advisory creates a daily touchpoint, in addition to the weekly touchpoint that the program already contained.

Advisory lessons are designed within nine categories “that map directly to what our students need when they need it—spanning academic advising, college & career readiness, wellness, belonging and inclusion, leadership and more,” Hattaway says.

This newly developed advisory curriculum connects with what we know is best for girls, fostering leadership intentionally, promoting dignity and inclusion with dedicated identity and responsiveness lessons, and reinforcing a commitment to the whole girl with wellness and community time.

Assistant Head of School Pam Hartshorne P'21 feels that consistency has benefited students: “It’s powerful to begin each day grounded in support and belonging.”

Hartshorne, the longtime director of CSG’s Middle School, and Parsons have built strong curricular alignment between the two divisions, helping to ease students’ transition into the Upper School.

“In history, for example, students now scaffold research projects throughout Middle School so that they’re ready for the rigor of Upper School work,” Hartshorne says. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the impact of that continuity.”

A capstone project now allows Form VIII students to conclude their Middle School experience by engaging in meaningful exploration, “whether that means exploring a theme, conducting research, or developing a creative project, without requiring a formal research paper unless she chooses to,” according to a letter sent to parents about the project. “These early conversations will help spark ideas and set the stage for a self-directed project that balances academic inquiry with personal passion.”

The new collaborations have also reached faculty, expanding their leadership opportunities as well. “Some of these systems existed before [my arrival], but clarifying roles and empowering leaders created a high-functioning, self-sustaining structure,” Parsons says. “Now, every student and teacher understands how their voice contributes to the whole.”

Through the Institute for Innovation and Leadership, Upper School students now have 20 new electives that allow exploration, including Global Seminar, Leadership Seminar, STEM Seminar, Design Thinking, Math-Making Fusion, and The Writing Community. Capstone projects through these

programs allow students to graduate as Distinguished Scholars and offer the potential to be published in scientific journals.

The preparation and results speak for themselves: half of the Classes of 2025 and 2026 have been named AP scholars, 98% of CSG graduates are admitted to one of their top three colleges, and 50% of recent CSG graduates are pursuing STEM degrees in college.

“As a CSG Upper School student, I feel proud to be a part of a welcoming community that helps us grow, both academically and socially. Everyone here is working toward their own goals, and I’m constantly inspired by my friends and how driven they are. Being around such motivated and supportive people really allows me to grow and succeed myself. In my remaining time at CSG, I look forward to making more memories here and taking on new challenges,” says Olivia Ruanphae ’27.

That sense of growth is reverberating across different divisions. “There’s a sense of momentum in the Upper School now where Middle School students can see it and can’t wait to be part of it,” Hartshorne says.

For Parsons, the success of the Upper School is rooted in community. “This has always been a place with extraordinary potential,” Parsons says. “Our students are talented and driven, our faculty is deeply committed, and our mission to help girls lead and thrive guides every decision we make. The best part is, we’re just getting started.”

FROM THE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Fellow CSG Alumnae, My name is Van Wilson ’86, and I am excited to serve as the CSG Alumnae Association President this year.

Whether you’re in Columbus or miles away, there are plenty of ways to stay engaged with, give back to, and support the CSG community.

You’re warmly invited to join events such as Alumnae Weekend back on campus, the Alumnae Scholarship Walk (held both in Columbus and regionally), and gatherings across the country throughout the year.

We also welcome alumnae interested in volunteering—whether by joining a committee on the Alumnae Association Board (Networking & Communications, Development, Governance, or Alumnae Weekend), serving as a regional ambassador, or hosting a gathering in your current city. Roberta Yenkin Krakoff ’55 and Marcia Willcox McHam ’55 never stopped taking classes together. They have tried NYU and Hunter but have decided on Fordham College after 60 years. After years of history, both Great Britain and USA, this semester’s course is “What Happened to Art After the Renaissance.” Quite a change of pace. They continue to enjoy Off-Broadway theater and many different dance groups, and both ladies are still subway riders. They met at Main-Montrose kindergarten 83 years ago.

Rosamond Brown Vaule ’55 shares, “Those who saw me at our 70th Reunion may remember that I was struggling with mobility, but I got a brand new hip in early June. With excellent physical therapy plus determination, I am beginning to feel more like myself again. I spent a few gorgeous weeks on Cape Cod in late summer, am now able to drive, use a cane for long distances, have attended a couple concerts with friends, and even got myself to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts recently. My grandsons are now 5 and 7 so I’m still out of sync with my peers, but I feel so lucky to have them! I cherish memories of our CSG Reunion and send my love to you all.”

Esther Webster Summers ’55 shares, “Leaving Northern Michigan in mid-October with wonderful summer memories, first of our 70th together in Columbus and granddaughter Mira’s graduation from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, then a season full of my two Western families enjoying our Columbus Beach. Daughter Sarah, on her guitar, jammed “Wagon Wheel” with Mr. Wagon Wheel himself, Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show, son of neighbors here. The “grands” managed a lot of “hotdogging” in and off the Sunfish in gale-force winds! I also enjoyed visits with my brother Pete’s two sons and their families, embracing one nephew’s vacation goal of “finding 10,000 ways of doing nothing!”

Ann Blake Parsons ’55 reports, "I am doing fine … just keep exercising and that seems to help! I am looking forward to making it to my Michigan summer retreat next year."

Beatrice (Bobbie) Isaac Weiler ’55 reports that her brother Tom Isaac died suddenly in September in Colorado.

He was injured some 40 years ago in a swimming accident in Mexico, but then led a fulfilling and successful life. He was involved in city and county government and was a delegate to national Democratic conventions. A celebration of his life was held in Aspen in October.

Barbara (Barby) Boothby Thun ’56’s husband, David, recently drowned in the Atlantic Ocean. What a shock and terrible loss. Yet Barby, with her usual courage and grace, reported how proud she was of her son,Ted, as he helps her travel through this difficult time.

Judy Yenkin Brachman ’56, another amazing and accomplished woman, still serves as chairman of the Ohio Attorney General’s Commission on Aging. Judy is now on the board of and consultant to a new organization called The Village, which seeks to locate individuals who can serve any and all of the needs of Columbus’s elderly Jewish community.

Sue Andreae Brown ’56 has become involved with the Louisville Botanical Garden. Among other gifts, she and her husband, Hewitt, have contributed to the magnificence of the Yewdell Botanical Gardens by adding the gift shop and beautiful cafe.

Andrea (Andy) Smith Lorig ’56 still deals courageously with macular degeneration and other disabilities but maintains her love of life and sense of humor.

Class Rep Joanna (Joannie) Walz Foster ’56 shares, “I am always uplifted by talking to all of you. Despite being our age and having to meet the challenges of this time, all of you seem happy and optimistic.

“As for me, my husband, Jerry and I continue to adapt to our new environs. We must admit that the level of care manifested by our caregivers, medics, servers, housekeepers etc. is really awesome…and many are teenagers! We’re very proud of them. I have talked to all of you about your wonderful and accomplished children. We’ll try to talk about them next time.”

Judy Pass Redd ’57 shares, “My family has expanded by 1½ great-grandchildren: Baby Hudson is 2 months old, and Julian, who is 2, is expecting a baby brother in February. My grandson Spencer has been promoted to manager of his shift at FedEx. My son-in-law Will is recovering from heart surgery and preparing to retire. I am still in good health and hope to attend our 70th Reunion.”

Joanna Walz Foster ’56 shares, “Lucille (Lucy) Kirk ’58 and Nancy Walz Chinn ’58, cousins, chatted the other day and decided that the education they received while attending Columbus School for Girls was the best education they received in their lives…anywhere.”

Class Rep Carla Pollack Lane ’64 shares, “Andrea Alloway Ralston ’64 has moved to an apartment in Gahanna and is getting ready to visit her two BFFs in St. Lucie, Fla., for the holidays. She has started playing the dulcimer again, so she and her Florida friends will be making music together."

Lots of news from Abbie McClintock Crane ’64, some of it also musical. She remains active with the Seattle-area Viola da Gamba Society, which, she says, "keeps me striving to improve." She had a visitor this summer: Elizabeth (Liz) Rambo Lewis ’64 came from Colorado to visit her son in Seattle, and she and Abbie spent a day in the Bellevue Botanical Garden. Abbie went on an Adriatic cruise of Wellesley alumnae with her sister Carolyn and niece Allison.

"We had a lecturer on board, a professor of archaeology at Wellesley, who gave great lectures," she says.

This November, Karen Wise Jaffe ’64 will move to The Grandview, a senior residential community in Bethesda, Md. She says she is looking forward to maintaining her urban lifestyle and getting around town in spite of her low-vision disability: "I will have access to a pool and yoga classes, so if nothing else falls apart, I will be happy."

Joanna Walz Foster ’56 shares, “Miriam (Mimi) Walz McCall ’66 continues to live in Waynesburg, Ohio, where she loves the beauty of the farm, the friendship of her dozens of birds (she says she spends more on food for the birds than her own!) and the love and friendship of her friends and neighbors. Miriam sees a lot of her children and grandchildren who live on the East Coast. Last summer, she travelled with friends to Maine, her favorite place in the world. Then in October, she joined CSG friends Lynn Byers Barno ’66 and Susie Shepard Carr ’66 on another cruise in the Bahamas. Finally, on Halloween weekend, Miriam joined her nephew and cousins in Columbus for a fun, family gathering at Kristin Kirk Florey’s ’84 home.”

Susan (Susie) Clatworthy ’69 shares, “This past May, Jim’s daughter graduated from nursing school, then moved right into passing her licensing exam! Now she is a practicing RN in Massachusetts. Very, very exciting for her after all her hard work, and we are all so proud of her! As well as having her night job in the emergency department, she is now getting her BS in Nursing online from Salve Regina in Newport, R.I. Quite an accomplishment at so many levels!

Her son is a senior in high school and will soon be off to college. What a journey for both of them. Jim and I enjoyed a fun summer, golfing, boating and spending time with friends. Every day is surely a blessing. Just returned from visiting my sister Diana Clatsworthy Morgan ’62, her husband, Kent, and all their family. They are greatgrandparents now…so unbelievable! I remember when my niece was born in 1963. I was very proud to be an aunt at the age of 12 :) and so excited to tell ALL of you about it!

Dr. Candace Corson ’69 shares, “I am still loving Indianapolis and so thankful to be very near two of my four sons, my oldest and my youngest, who help me and my husband, now that my husband is disabled from an mRNA vaccine injury. We are thankful for our little garden, woods and kind neighbors, even though we are in the city. Just a lovely area we're thankful for and our little rescue dog, Mr. Feather, who brings much joy. One exciting thing is the development of a breakthrough probiotic, with prebiotic added, to feed the good germs, working together to help people of all ages in protecting and healing the gut and the micro-biome, helping the immune system and brain function. That's my continued work (25 years now) with the wonderful Juice Plus+ company and the newest product (probiotics) just launched across the United States. I'm wishing everyone in our beautiful class a beautiful autumn season!"

Leslie Huntington ’70 shares: “Classmates enjoyed watching a new movie together at the Drexel Theater, a lifelong destination. Because the movie was Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, proper attire included a fascinator hat. Anne Jeffrey Wright ’70, Sally Schmidt Austen ’70, Lesley Wilson Schaab ’70, Rose Coleman Kolar ’70, Beth Byers Sells ’70 and I do recommend the film and good popcorn to go along with it."

Class Rep Caroline Farrar Orrick ’72 shares, “Elizabeth (Betsy) Morris ’72 and I have been taking fly-fishing classes through a local club in San Francisco. We have taken clubsponsored trips to various rivers throughout California. On each trip we acquire new casting skills, new ways to tie on leaders and tippets, and many, many (many!) new flies. In March, Anne Garden ’72 and I joined a group of women who hiked part of the Scottish West Highland Way: 88.5 km over six days. I use the local standard of measurement for Scotland because I like to respect metrics of every country I’m in. Well...and because I can report that, while fishing the River Awe near Oban, I caught a 152mm brown trout. It sounds so much more impressive than six inches.

I’ve been enjoying spending time with my 20-month-old grandson Billy, who lives only a block away. Husband Bill has taken senior status as a judge but is still very active. Our oldest, Sarah, is now prosecuting felonies at the D.A.’s office in Santa Rosa; our middle daughter, Kaggie, is in charge of the Wolf Project here in California, working with UC Berkeley and Fish and Wildlife; and our youngest, Libby, is about to qualify for her Marriage and Family Therapist license."

Chris Davis ’72 shares, “Pictured is my new coaching challenge. He is not very good with a racket, but he loves tennis balls and he is very athletic. Never a dull moment when he is around. He will be 2 next month.”

Brenda Beavers H e n d r i c ks ’ 73 and Diana Reese ’73 visited London in May to enjoy Wicked and The Phantom of the Opera at the theater. They wrapped up their tour with the Horse Guards, then s aw England’s Diana Reese ’73 and Brenda Beavers Donkey Sanctuary in Hendricks ’73 visited the Donkey Sanctuary Sidmouth. Diana has in Sidmouth, England. been involved in donkey rescue for more than 20 years, both in California and in Florida, so participating in the sanctuary’s Donkey Week was the opportunity of a lifetime.

1974

The Class of 1974 joined CSG alumnae, faculty, administration and guests in the Unicorn Theatre on September 6, 2025 to celebrate the life and achievements of Mary Jane Trapp ’74, who passed away April 24, 2025.

The program featured hymns and the school prayer, a heartfelt tribute to the chapel tradition of the class’s school years together. Particularly poignant was the participation of Connie Bodiker ’55, who taught the class in Form III. Mary Jane will be deeply missed.

Molly Lazarus '74 shares, “I thought I’d chime in after the celebration of Mary Jane’s life. I’m so grateful I was here for the lovely service that Muffy Hamilton Parson '74 organized and led, with help from MJT’s wonderful friends here and in Cleveland. It was a heart-wrenching tribute to a remarkable life cut too short.

A reminder to cherish all we have every day. Life for me is full of love and adventure.

Our two daughters each have two kids—one in Seattle and Molly Lazarus ’74 at a family camp near one next door to us in San Yosemite this summer.

with my mom, who is doing well. In February we’ll go to New Zealand, Fiji and Australia! We are so lucky and excited!”

Stephanie Burchfield ’74 shares, “My youngest daughter, Melissa, graduated this summer from Washington University School of Law, and she’s now at Vorys law firm in Columbus! We are proud parents! My older daughter, Elizabeth, continues to amaze me with her independence and adventurous spirit. She’s been a travel nurse in PICUs (pediatric ICU) since right before Covid hit, and she travels around the country for each 3- to 5-month gig. When she’s not working, she travels solo all around the world. She’s up to 68 countries. I wish they would both eventually move back to the Northwest, but it doesn’t look promising. In January 2024, we moved my mom from her home in Westerville to a memory care facility in Seattle, just a few blocks from my sister’s home. Mom turned 98 this year. I love retirement, though I am still trying to carve out time to focus on a single volunteer activity, rather than the one-time events I’ve helped out with. Between moving from our home of 26 years to a new home just a mile away, to various travels with my kids and friends, to spending time in Seattle with my mom and trips to our property in Eastern Oregon, I feel a bit like a rolling stone. I do love my time at our new home in Portland, with a wonderful fitness center a few blocks away and mountains, waterfalls and ocean within a 60- to 90-minute drive for hiking, biking, bird-watching and strolls on the beach. Come visit me—I have extra rooms!”

Linda Freilich '74 shares, “I am well and happy and settled in Williamsburg, Va. We boat the Chesapeake frequently, we kayak, and there are tons of interesting places to walk around here. Rick says his favorite boating was in Tennessee. My boat’s name is Sea Y’all! Traveling the York River into the Chesapeake is a bit big and overwhelming: Turn right, I’m in the ocean; turn left, I am on my way to Annapolis. Isabella Zsoldos ’74 and I visit each other and have fun together. It is her turn to visit me for boating.”

lead an effort to build a center for addiction and suicide on campus. For those interested in mental health, our department recently launched the first-of-its-kind, statewide SOAR study, which focuses on identifying root causes and trajectories of mental illness and addiction. (Check out SOARStudies.org for more information.) It's been exciting to be part of that effort.”

Jennifer Poulton Rose '74 shares, “My son, Leo IV (we have to number him to avoid confusion with his father, Leo III, or grandfather, Leo Jr.), married Jess on May 24, 2025.

My mother, who turned 90 on May 12, was able to attend the wedding. Leo is a financial analyst, and Jess, who just finished her PhD. in forensic psychology, has begun a post-doc at Emory. Fortunately for us, they are living here in Atlanta. My daughter Elizabeth is an attorney in Atlanta and is pregnant with her second child, due in October. I’d love to see anyone who comes through Atlanta. Love to all.”

In two fantastic days together, we also went to the Franklin Pa r k C o n s e r vato r y a n d the Zoo. We enjoyed some amazing meals, too, but mostly we enjoyed reconnecting with each other!”

Tracy Swedlow ’81 shares, “I've released the first episode (https://www.tv-the-musical.com/episodes-music) of my original musical, TV, The Musical, now re-imagined as an episodic audio drama! It’s the first and only musical to explore the race to invent and control television, told through the perspective of Pem Farnsworth (who I was so proud to meet and interview), the wife and collaborator of TV’s visionary inventor, Philo T. Farnsworth. At its heart is the battle between Philo and David Sarnoff, the powerful head of RCA, as they fight to shape a technology that would define the 20th century—culminating in the Apollo moon landing, broadcast live on the very invention they struggled to control. I'm working on future episodes and hope to stage the show in SF, NYC or LA over the next year possibly.

Michelle Katz Grey ’81 reports sad news that her mother, Peggy Kaplan, passed away in August 2023 and her father, Stanley (Stan) Katz, passed away in January 2025.

Thrilled to share that Alyson Leeman ’81 retired at the end of July after 32 years in practice! She plans to take the kids to Morocco in October to celebrate.

Marla Krupman ’81 traveled through Vermont in October and got to spend time with Jennifer (Jenny) Brown Cohen ’81 (unfortunately they missed Shelagh Connor Shapiro ’81, who was traveling). It was the first time their spouses met, and they had a great time together. Jenny and Jonathan were five-star hosts: the group went biking, played pickleball, ate very well, celebrated Yom Kippur and saw a terrific concert at UVM (Alex Cuba).

Joanna Walz Foster ’56 shares, ”Sheila Foster Carder ’84 continues her exciting and unusual life. Having been interested in the welfare of the Earth her entire adult life, Sheila is now Director of Development and Community Impact for the Rogue Valley Food System Network. Sheila raises money and builds awareness about the importance of creating a thriving local food system. She says the work is fun because it brings together more than 20 organizations and businesses to help farmers thrive, feed hungry people, protect watersheds, build soils and reduce food waste. Sounds like something all communities should be doing. On a more personal note, Sheila is sending her daughter, Clarity, soon to be a high school graduate, off to Patagonia for a NOLS course climbing mountains and kayaking Chilean fjords. (Does the apple fall far from the tree?). Other news: Sheila is engaged to the love of her life, Brett Nixon, an Australian helicopter pilot. They will be living in the Outback (Australia) and sail the remote Kimberly.

Joanna Walz Foster ’56, shares, “Kristin Kirk Florey ’84 had a small family reunion when her cousin, Scott Montgomery, from Sun Valley, Idaho, flew his two children, Haley (28) and Clyde (25), from Vancouver, Canada to Columbus to attend an Ohio State football game. Kristin gathered together various Kirk relatives and had a great barbecue at her home.”

Audrey Cohen ’81 spent a month in Italy this summer visiting nine cities, including Venice, Verona, Lake Guarda, Lake Como, Florence, Sienna, Cortona and Rome. While it was unbearably hot in Florence, the food and the sights were fabulous!

Lindsay Lawrence Sears ’8 5 , Fe l i c i a G a r l a n d Jackson ’85 and Kelly Speakes -Backman ’8 5 spent a weekend in August together in the DC area with their spouses. They watched Lindsay’s daughter Emma Kelly Speakes-Backman ’85, Lindsay Sears play for Racing Lawrence Sears ’85 and Felicia Garland Jackson ’85.

Annabelle Lunt Mahoney ’16 received her M.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in May 2025, adding that to her B.S. in bioengineering from Clemson University. She is now a first-year emergency medicine resident at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. She recently married Jack Mahoney in Ravello, Italy, where Nicole Narcross ’16 and Erin McGuire ’16 stood by her side as bridesmaids, and seven members of her graduating class joined the celebration. After collaborating with the First Take production Ciara Latham ’23 working at the NBA team, she appeared in their Draft in New York City.

In August, she joined the College GameDay team back home in Columbus, for Lee Corso’s farewell episode at Ohio State. During the school year, Ciara is continuing her fellowship alongside her studies at Howard University.

This past summer, Ciara Latham ’23 began her fellowship with ESPN at their headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.

During her time, Ciara developed her skills as a multimedia journalist by writing, producing and filming original content. One of her first assignments was the NBA Draft in New York City, where she and her cohort created content Ciara Latham ’23 working at the filming of for ESPN’s Andscape.
