THE COLUMBUS MUSEUM QUARTERLY MAGAZINE
SUMMER 2019
LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear Member,
I
f you are looking for interesting and enjoyable summer activities for you or your family, The Columbus Museum has much to offer. First, we are excited to debut two adult programs, Yoga at the Museum and a summer book club. The ever-popular free summer concert series will be back, this year featuring new art-making activities and guided tours of the Museum, as well as music by the Fort Benning Maneuver Center of Excellence Jazz Band, the Bonaventure Quartet, and Rabbitfoot. Fantastic Fridays and summer camps will return, offering live performances and art making for children. The Columbus Museum recently acquired two important early twentieth-century paintings through the generosity of donors, Portrait of a Young Woman by Cecelia Beaux and Sunrise at Mid-Ocean by Thomas Moran. Born in Philadelphia, Beaux was a leading portraitist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who also was the first woman to be on the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Moran was a leading landscape painter of the period, known for his brilliant depictions of the Grand Canyon and for evocative seascapes, exemplified by this new acquisition. The
Museum is very grateful to the donors of these outstanding paintings. Exhibitions opening this summer include Talk of the Town: Conversation Starters from the Permanent Collection, which features groupings of rarely seen works from the collection. On view in the Woodruff Gallery, the exhibition should spark conversation as viewers discover connections between

the works. In the Museum’s Third Floor Galleries, Miss Georgia: 75 Years in Columbus, will present the history of the Miss America state pageant in our region. The second annual presentation of Farm to Table(aux), held April 6, was even more fun and delicious than last year’s event. Nearly 300 people came to see tableaux vivants of works of art from the Museum’s collection and enjoyed gourmet farmto-table cuisine created by Chef Rusty Hamlin, Executive Chef for the Zac Brown Band. We are grateful to event co-chairs Kathelen Amos and Eliza Brewer and for our wonderful team of volunteers, without whom the event’s success would not have been possible. Participating restaurants and chefs, as well as the volunteer designers and performers for the tableaux, created a memorable evening, and we thank everyone who made Farm to Table(aux) such a wonderful event!

T
he words “Miss America” have traditionally conjured images of beauty, style, and grace. For 75 years, Columbus has been part of that legacy as the host of the Miss Georgia Pageant. This exhibition honors the event ’s local history, beginning in 1944 when the Columbus Jaycees, a community service organization, agreed to be the new organizers of the state pageant. From a one-night outdoor event in Memorial Stadium to its longtime home at the Three Arts Theatre and now at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, the Miss Georgia Pageant has made its mark in the city of Columbus. Beyond the women throughout the state who have traveled to the Chattahoochee Valley to compete, this exhibition spotlights the longtime 2 volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who
have made the Miss Georgia Pageant come to life year after year. Three former Miss Georgias will also receive special attention through gowns, crowns, and other memorabilia: Miss America winners Neva Jane Langley (Fickling) in 1953 and Betty Cantrell (Maxwell) in 2016, as well as Columbus native and Miss America 1st runner-up Chasity Hardman (Smith) in 2009. In addition to the glitz and glamour of the onstage pageant, the exhibition will also examine the women’s platform issues and the
working advocacy efforts in which Miss America and Miss Georgia contestants engage. This exhibition is generously supported by Metro Power and Dr. Billy Kendall. It is also made possible in part by the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau and Columbus Cultural Arts Alliance.

EARLY 2OTH CENTURY WORKS JOIN COLLECTION
W
ith the recent addition of five paintings to the permanent collection, The Columbus Museum has strengthened its holdings by artists working in the first third of the twentieth century. Ranging in date from 1900 to 1930, these pictures will 4

help broaden and deepen the stories the Museum tells about American art. A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, William A. Harper created Landscape (Brittany) (fig. 1) on his first trip to Europe in 1903–1905. Two years later, he returned to the Continent, where he sought out and studied with the American expatriate impressionist Henry O. Tanner. Harper died from tuberculosis at age 36, making mature works like this picture quite rare. From an artistic family, Thomas Moran made his reputation as a Hudson River School painter and printmaker known for depictions of the American West, Venice, and seascapes. Sunrise at Mid-Ocean (fig. 2) reveals Moran’s peripatetic lifestyle as well as his obsession with English painter J.
M. W. Turner, especially apparent in the expansive sky with the roaring sea below capturing and reflecting the sun’s light. The Museum’s canvas is part of an informal series in which the artist depicted atmospheric conditions at various times of day from aboard ship on his many Atlantic crossings. Like Thomas Moran, Cecilia Beaux grew up in the Philadelphia region; as a mature artist she taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for many years. Although today Beaux’s society portraits are not as well-known as those by John Singer Sargent, the painter was highly regarded during her lifetime. Portrait of a Young Woman (fig. 3) depicts an unidentified sitter in quiet contemplation. Her finely rendered facial features suggest a thoughtful intelligence.
3
Jerome Myers’s Corner Mart (fig. 4) is anything but quiet. It is a charming early example of the artist’s favored subject: bustling New York, particularly areas where new immigrants tended to settle, like the Lower East Side. The composition is filled with incident 5
and makes a striking companion to permanent collection favorite Henry Schankenberg’s West Side, a contrasting glimpse of well-heeled Midtown Manhattan. In its depiction of the lower classes in a dignified manner, Corner Mart shares a similar ambition with William Edouard Scott’s Wash Day, Alabama (fig. 5). Like William A. Harper, Scott pursued individual studies with Henry O. Tanner in France. In 1915 George Washington Carver invited Scott to the Tuskegee Institute. The trip inspired later travels throughout the South, where the artist looked for African American subjects, such as the central figures on this working farm, who convey resilience and confidence.
The Columbus Museum is grateful to the many donors who have entrusted us with the gifts of art featured in this spread.

HISTORY ACQUISITIONS
INTERPRETING CARSON 1
I
n conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Carson McCullers’ birth in 2017, The Columbus Museum undertook a concerted effort to acquire artifacts related to the life of the renowned Southern Gothic author and Columbus native. McCullers had been underrepresented in the Museum’s collection, making this an ideal opportunity to better our interpretation of this literary legend. McCullers began writing her debut novel The Heart is a Lonely Hunter while recovering from illness in her hometown. It was an instant smash, turning its 23-year-old author into an overnight sensation in 1940. Her work 1. The Member of the Wedding lobby card, 1953, Gift of Dr. Carlos Dews G.2018.4.1 | 2. on The Member of the Wedding languished for years as she sought to “solve” the story’s plot, which she finally did while running down the streets of Brooklyn Heights, chasing a fire truck with her roommate Gypsy Rose Lee. It was published in 1946 and also met with immediate success. The Museum was pleased to recently purchase two first editions of these beloved works, enabling us to present them as they would have been first discovered by readers. Both of the aforementioned novels eventually became movies, introducing McCullers’ work to new fans around the world. Two gifts to the collection enable the Museum to share this broader legacy: the donation of two promotional lobby cards for 1953’s The Member of the Wedding and the original soundtrack album for The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, released in 1968. The Museum
thanks Dr. Carlos Dews, as well as Tom and Michelle Westmoreland, for their thoughtful donations. Befitting our multidisciplinary mission, the Museum was also pleased to acquire four images of McCullers by artists who are well represented in the American art canon. These photographs, which made their debut in the 2017 exhibition The We of Me: The Chosen Families of Carson McCullers, present the author at various stages throughout her life, captured by photographers such as Irving Penn, Carl Van Vechten, and Louise Dahl-Wolfe. 4
