Dear Member,

I

hope this letter finds you and your loved ones well during what is turning out to be an extraordinary 2020.

As you know, The Columbus Museum is among the many extremely successful public-private partnerships that distinguish the Chattahoochee Valley. In times of emergency such as we find ourselves in now, we look to our public partner, the Muscogee County School District, for guidance. Thus, on March 16, following the District’s decision to close schools, we closed our doors as a matter of public safety to protect you, all visitors, our volunteers, and our staff.

The building may be closed, but our Museum is still open. Our talented staff is working hard on new virtual ways to learn and enjoy American art and local history through our website and on social media; their creativity in rising to this new challenge has been inspiring. We are also distributing art-making projects to students to ensure that a lack of access to computers at home never means a lack of opportunity to create and learn about art. We contin-

ue to learn how The Columbus Museum is much more than its building, and I hope you will find that our virtual museum is a great alternative for engaging with art and culture when you cannot be physically present. The virtual Columbus Museum will continue long after this health crisis has passed and the building has reopened.

The arts, cultural history, and museums are sometimes categorized as “extras,” as things that are not essential. During this time of unexpected isolation, that point of view is disproven on a daily basis. The arts connect us with each other as few things can, and they connect us with humanity as a whole, while we look to history for guidance in how to navigate our way through this unique time.

On a personal level, I have witnessed frequently throughout my career how much positive difference museums can make for an individual or group. To this day, the artist Amy Sherald talks about the impact that a painting by Bo Bartlett, which she saw on a school field trip to The Columbus Museum, had on her life, including her subsequent decision to become an artist. Students who participate in a field trip to the Museum or in one of our many outreach programs—including programs at the Housing Authority and pre-K art and literacy programs at Title 1 elementary schools—

create and engage with the world around them in new ways. Not all will become famous artists like Amy Sherald and Bo Bartlett, but their lives, too, will be changed for the better. Nor are these positive experiences limited to the young. Shortly into my tenure at the Museum, for example, I met a visitor who told me that she stopped by once a month to view Boat Installation by Dale Chihuly because it brought her such joy. Museums exist to create such moments of discovery and wonder.

You may have read the news that Wolf Kahn died on March 15 at the age of 91. A favorite artist for many in our community, Kahn is represented in the Museum’s collection with three works: a drawing, a painting, and a monotype. Kahn once made a wonderful statement about his work that seems particularly apt now, as we look to the arts more than ever for the bright future that lies just ahead: “I want the people looking at my work to feel a sense of all the possibilities of painting, and, through that, in life as a whole. When that happens, I feel I’ve accomplished something useful.”

Everyone at the Museum looks forward to the day—very soon, I trust— that we can welcome you back for an inperson visit. We have a slate of terrific exhibitions and programs that will be ready for you when our doors re-open. In the meantime, please stay well and happy, and thank you so much for your support and love of The Columbus Museum.

n the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Columbus Museum launched the Virtual Museum and the Virtual Museum for Kids online as a way to engage visitors who could not physically come to our building. The website features video tours of exhibitions, curator chats about objects in the permanent collection, interactive activities for families, educator resources and more.

One feature called “60 Seconds

with the Artist” lets visitors hear artists with work in the collection discuss their piece. The Museum also hosted an online event, Virtual Artist Talk with Photographer Lauren Henkin, one of the photographers with work in the current exhibition Documenting the Rural South.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS CONTINUE “Given our unprecedented current situation and the stress that it is causing families, we wanted to find a way to continue engaging with our friends living in Housing Authority communities. By providing simple art materials and activity prompts, we hope to alleviate some of the boredom and frustration that families are experiencing while still fulfilling our mission of bringing American art and history to life in our region. We are so grateful to MCSD and its Director of Nutrition, Susan Schlader, for working with us to distribute these activity kits.”

T

he Columbus Museum Education Department not only offers homebased art and history talks and activities but is also making the effort to continue programming offline as well.

In 2018, The Columbus Museum first partnered with the Housing Authority of Columbus, Ga. to bring art-making activities to youth living at Warren Williams Homes while the Museum’s curatorial staff was working on the special exhibition, Making Conversation with Warren Williams Homes. At the request of Housing Authority staff and residents, the art-making program expanded to additional housing developments.

Now called the Community Art Partners program, the initiative is funded by grants from the Rotary Club of Columbus, the Landrum Fund, and the City of Columbus Office of Crime Prevention.

The program offers a six-week class series for elementary age youth living in different Housing Authority communities. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented in-person workshops.

Thanks to a partnership with the Muscogee County School District, this program lives on. Director of Education & Engagement Lucy Kacir has delivered over 400 art supply kits and activities sheets for distribution to Warren Williams, Canty Homes, Chase Homes, and Wilson Homes through MCSD’s grab-and-go lunch program.

The Columbus Museum partnered with Muscogee County School District to distribute air dry sculpture activity kits and other supplies at Warren Williams Homes, Canty Homes, Chase Homes and Wilson Homes as an extension of the Community Art Partners program.

here is always something happening at The Columbus Museum! Learn about some of the new ways that our education department is making a difference in our community by bringing people together with art and history – and learn more about programs already in place.

New to the Museum

Gallery Scenes is a performance program that brings the Museum’s collection to life for visitors of all ages. With the help of talented local writers, directors, and actors, the Museum is creating one-of-akind theatrical performances that take place

right in our galleries! Look for performances beginning Fall 2020.

Mission: Museum brings together children ages 5-10 and their families to complete a new mission each month, beginning Summer 2020. During each mission, participants will explore the galleries through a series of activities where they use observation skills and work together with other explorers to make decisions to successfully complete their mission!

Outreach programs continue

Access for the Arts provides a specially designed museum experience for individuals

with early stage Alzheimer’s and their carepartners. Each month participants are invited to explore and share stories about objects in the Museum’s collection, followed by a related art making activity. More information, including future dates, can be found on our website.

For K-12 youth on the Autism Spectrum and their caregivers, ARTiculate is a monthly program featuring gallery tours, hands-on activities, and art making with a sensory-friendly focus. Fun for visitors of all ages, this is a low stress way to explore the Museum before it opens to the general public. More information, including future dates, can be found on our website.

ACTIVITY WATERCOLOR RESIST COLLECTION CONNECTION: LEE KRASNER, STILL LIFE, 1939

Lee Krasner painted this still life in 1939 with bold black lines. This style of painting is called a still life, which just means that the subject is an inanimate object and not a person or place. Still life paintings can include lots of different objects including flowers, skulls, food, and more. Take a few moments and look at the shapes and colors in this painting. What objects can you identify based on shape or color?

ACTIVITY 1. Gather your art supplies. You will need a black crayon, watercolor paint, a paintbrush, a water cup, and thick white paper.

2. Choose five objects from around your house and arrange them to create your own still life.

3. Use your black crayon to draw your objects. Focus on their basic shapes and draw those first with thick outlines. Once you have the outline of your objects drawn, decide if you want to add more detail or objects to your still life.

4. When you have finished adding details and objects, you are ready to start painting! Use your watercolor paint to paint your still life. Watercolor paint won’t cover wax crayon so you don’t need to be too careful as you paint.

MCCULLERS COLLECTION CONTINUES TO GROW

J

ordan Massee Jr., cousin of Columbus native and Southern Gothic author Carson McCullers and friend of playwright Tennessee Williams, grew up in an elite family in Macon, where he returned at the end of his life after several decades in New York City. Massee died in 2002, but his estate recently donated to The Columbus Museum four objects that are particularly insightful to help visitors understand important people and moments in McCullers’ life:

Dahl-Wolfe photographed Carson frequently during her early years in New York City, and this photo with her husband Reeves shows the writer in similar attire to her outfit worn in the Museum’s Dahl-Wolfe McCullers photo acquired in 2016. The back is inscribed “To our dearest cousins, Jordan and Paul/Reeves”

April 25, 1950. Avedon photographed both McCullers and Williams many times, but in 1950 he captured the two together in the midst of their decades-long friendship.

The Museum is grateful to the Jordan Massee Estate for this welcome donation. These photographs are the first objects in the collection to feature Carson McCullers with her husband Reeves, her longtime friend Tennessee Williams, and the guests at her most famous luncheon. The Vogue page is particularly fitting and can be displayed with the Penn photograph. This group continues to enhance the Museum’s collection of McCullers objects, including the recent donation by Michelle and Tom Westmoreland of a first edition of The Ballad of the Sad Café: The Novels and Stories of Carson McCullers.

DONATION HIGHLIGHTS SPENCER HIGH STUDENT’S CRAFTSMANSHIP

erome Robinson was born in Philadelphia in 1917. His parents Odie and Leola Robinson were both from Columbus but moved north shortly before Jerome’s birth. In Columbus, Odie had been an insurance agent, but in Philadelphia he became a studio photographer. Jerome and his younger sister Sadie lived with their parents until 1931, when their mother died at the age of 34 from peritonitis (an inflammation/ infection of abdominal wall tissue, often resulting from liver disease or a burst appendix). Jerome, 13 years old, and Sadie, 11, returned to Columbus to live with their maternal grandmother, Lizzie Rush.

Jerome enrolled in Spencer High School, and among his other courses, learned carpentry from Mr. D. Slater. Though Robinson later worked as a bartender and porter at various Columbus clubs, he continued honing his woodworking skills and created many pieces for his own home, as well as family and friends. Robinson made this magazine stand while he was a Spencer student. An inscription on the bottom reads “Jerome Robinson/10G/ Made in 2 weeks Dec. 18, 1934.” Robinson used the stand in his home for years.

Also included in this donation is a copy of the 1934 book The Story of Young Abraham Lincoln by Wayne Whipple. On the inside of the front cover, Robinson wrote: “Jerome E. Robinson/Tennis Champion/Three Consective[sic]/ Years 35, 36, 37/Pou Street Playground.”

The inscription references the former Pou Street School a few blocks from Robinson’s home on 23rd Street. At the time, no local tennis courts would have been open to African Americans, but Pou Street was a segregated Columbus city public school for black students, meaning Robinson and his friends could play there.

JOHN SINGER SARGENT, LORD WAVERTREE

J

ohn Singer Sargent, along with Thomas Eakins and Mary Cassatt, was one of the leading portraitists of his generation.

His ability to capture physical resemblance and psychological character produced some of the best known images in all of American art history, including Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau), 1883–84. Sargent is known for his loose brushwork and a style that traces its roots back to the painters Frans Hals and Diego Velazquez. Having gained an eye for social conventions during his peripatetic childhood and youth in Italy, Germany, and France, he was especially adept at conveying the idiosyncrasies of various societal and regional backgrounds through the poses, wardrobes, and moods he crafted for his sitters. Though acclaimed for his portrait paintings, in 1907 Sargent made the deliberate decision to stop accepting commissions for them so that he could devote more time to other projects, such as his mural cycle, The Triumph of Religion, for the Boston Public Library. Nevertheless, demand for his portraits remained high, and Sargent compromised by creating likenesses in charcoal. Through his deft, fluid use of line, Sargent continued to convey a sense of

each sitter’s personality as he had in his oil portraits. A recent exhibition, John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal, organized by the Morgan Library in New York and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., has given new attention to this important part of Sargent’s practice.

In this handsome and assured drawing, Sargent depicts William Hall

Walker, 1st and last Baron Wavertree (1856– 1933). Wavertree was the son of Sir Andrew Barclay Walker, 1st Bart., a wealthy brewer and Lord Mayor of Liverpool, and his wife, Eliza. A businessman and politician, Wavertree was also known as an owner of racehorses and as a breeder of polo ponies.

He helped establish the National Stud at his property in Tully, Kildare, Ireland. This venture was later taken over by the Irish government and became the Irish National Stud. Wavertree may have commissioned Sargent to create this portrait to help mark his late 1919 elevation to the peerage. In 1930, Wavertree presented the National Portrait Gallery, London, with a photographic reproduction of the sheet (NPG D37904) for its reference collection. Sargent’s command performance will be joining two other works on paper by the artist already in the Museum’s holdings—a Majorca watercolor and a sheet of preliminary sketches of female figures.

DAVID DRAKE, STORAGE JAR

B

orn around 1800, David Drake was an accomplished potter who is believed to have started training in ceramics manufacture early in life. He was enslaved by a family who owned pottery kilns in the Edgefield, S.C. area. While the kilns employed white Americans, they also utilized the effort of both free Blacks and enslaved individuals in order to increase manufacturing quantities and profits. Drake lost one of his legs in a railway accident in 1835, meaning he could no longer turn a potter’s wheel himself.

He teamed up with another enslaved man, who had crippled arms but sound legs, in order to continue production.

Drake’s highly regarded output often features an unusual element: the inclusion of carved words on the exterior of his finished pieces. On The Columbus Museum’s vessel, Drake’s signature extends downward from the mouth of the pot. This feature is extraordinary, both because at the time it was illegal for enslaved people to learn to read and write and because it is unknown how Drake attained these skills. After the Civil War, Drake continued his life’s work as a freedman, actively participating in the remarkable developments of the pottery industry that took place in South Carolina during his lifetime.

A

fter releasing his album Channel Orange and a letter online in 2012 describing his sexual orientation, elusive hip hop artist and New Orleans native Frank Ocean disappeared from the public eye. During his hiatus, Ocean took a deep dive into both the fluidity of his sexuality and his nuanced relationship with emotionality. What arose from his hiatus was the magazine Boys Don’t Cry and the associated album Blond, an expansive meditation on love, loss, and memory explored through an unexpected vessel: the personal vehicle.

From their place in muscle car magazines to hip hop music videos, cars have become common symbols of masculine status, wealth, industry, and power through the gendered performances of their owners. However, as evidenced by Ocean’s work, outside of this culture of performance exists another trend—one of private introspection and emotional depth. Drawing on the writings and music of Ocean as inspiration, AUTO/BODY explores the

emotionality found in cars in order to expand contemporary notions of bodies, identity, gender, power, and how

these concepts impact the formation of personal and collective memory of the American South.

Civic Engagement and You

STAY TUNED FOR OPENING DATES! | LEGACY GALLERY 1

O

n November 3, 2020, Americans will go to the polls to vote – not just for the president, but for a plethora of candidates and ballot initiatives at the federal, state, and local levels. This exhibition spotlights the history of politics and campaigning in the Chattahoochee Valley while also seeking to encourage civic engagement and voting in the 2020 election cycle. In addition to national notables like Jimmy Carter, the exhibition focuses on the history of service and voting at local and state

levels, encouraging visitors to consider the everyday importance of down-ballot races and special questions. Ongoing celebrations of the centennial of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote, as well as reflection on the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which more fully opened the vote to African Americans in the South, are both addressed. The exhibition features interactives and take-home material to help visitors more fully participate in the democratic process.
