FALL 2018

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Member,

F

all is one of the busiest times of the year at The Columbus Museum, and this one is no exception: we have two new exhibitions, three artist talks, the return of one of our most popular family events, and more! The opportunity to hear artists speak about their work and then talk to them about it is always enlightening and often uplifting. This fall I hope you will join us for three opportunities to interact with artists. Internationally renowned artist Mark Dion will speak about his work on September 13; on September 27, Eddie Dominguez will do a walkthrough of his ceramic work in Eddie Dominguez: Garden of Eden. The following month, photographers David Taylor, Jeremiah Ariaz, and Will Wilson will participate in an artists’ roundtable on Oct. 25th in conjunction with the exhibition, The Idea of West. Mark Dion’s talk and the roundtable are part of the Rothschild Speaker Series, made possible by the Aleen and Irwin Rothschild Endowment Fund. The Chattahoochee Valley’s public library system is one of its greatest assets, with seven branches serving the community. The Museum has collaborated with the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries in organizing a retrospective exhibition about the Mildred L. Terry Public Library, which opened in 1953 as the Fourth Avenue

Library. The first public library for African Americans in Columbus, it was renamed for the branch’s first librarian, Mildred L. Terry, in 1981. At its founding, the library was one of the few gathering places for African American residents and today continues to serve as an important community center and resource. The Museum is fortunate to have an outstanding works on paper collection whose scope and importance has benefitted greatly from many generous donors. In Match Up: New Works on Paper in Dialogue, an exhibition showcasing recent donations of drawings, prints, and photographs, curator Jonathan Frederick Walz, Ph.D., has placed these new

acquisitions together as pairs and trios. We hope that these thought-provoking “match ups” will encourage viewers to consider both expected and unexpected similarities and differences in the works. On Saturday, October 13, the Synovus Fall Festival returns to the Museum. This favorite annual event offers programs and hands-on activities for families, including the popular costume competition. We will once again offer a selection of art materials through the Trick or Treat for Arts Supplies activity. I hope you will bring a young family member or friend and join us for this wonderful free event. I am excited to announce a new special program on November 8, Art Collecting 101, a special seminar for people who would like to collect art and have questions about how to get started. Art Collecting 101 will focus on African American art. More information will be coming in a mailing in the fall. The Young Art Patrons have created a great new event: the Halloween Highball, scheduled for October 18 here at the Museum. Local bartenders will compete for top honors in the art of mixology, and attendees will enjoy hors d’oeuvres and live music as well. More information about this fun event benefitting the Museum is available on page 14. I hope you are as excited as I am about all these wonderful events, programs, and exhibitions. I look forward to seeing you at the Museum!

n 1947, Columbus’ African American residents asked city officials a straightforward question: When will a public library be available to us? Five years later, the Fourth Avenue Library opened as the first dedicated library open to people of color in the Chattahoochee Valley. Centrally located near the Liberty business district, Fifth Avenue School, and the Booker T. Washington public housing complex, the building became a community center for Columbus’ African American population, led for nearly 30 years by beloved head librarian Mildred Terry. This exhibition examines the history of this iconic gathering place from the library’s origins and early successes, through the dramatic integration of the Columbus public library system in the ‘60s and the threat of the Mildred L. Terry Public Library’s closure, to its many public programs and continuing influence today. Interviews collected by StoryCorps and the library during its Mildred Terry Memory Project in 2015 will be an integral part of the exhibition, as well as books, photographs, documents, and artifacts from the library’s archives.

his exhibition presents a selection of prints, drawings, and photographs that were donated to The Columbus Museum in the past two and a half years. Displayed in pairs or trios, these works on paper affirm and extend art historian Heinrich Wölfflin’s belief that bringing objects together, rather than studying them individually and without context, draws attention to similarities and differences in subject, media, and style. These visual parallels and disparities then help produce a more complex understanding of human cultural production. Since its inception, the internet has fostered “borrowing” words and pictures from their original settings and repurposing them elsewhere, such as a social media page, a meme generator, or a slide presentation. The World Wide Web contains a seemingly inexhaustible amount of writing, sounds, still images, and videos. Newsfeeds, online museum collections, and photo sharing apps are just a few sources of text and images that 1 then be joined in new combinations. can Inspired by the global phenomenon of “mashups”––digital remixes of two popular songs, often quite different in subject matter or musical style––Match Up invites viewers to reflect upon the power of juxtaposition and its role in our contemporary cut-and-paste culture.

HISTORY ACQUISITIONS

COLUMBUS AND WORLD WAR I

A

s the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day on November 11, 1918, approaches, The Columbus Museum is proud to announce the acquisition of seven historical artifacts and one artwork related to World War I, all gifted by generous donors. Propaganda posters, and the artists who created them, played a key role in promoting patriotic messages during WWI. The engaging designs on these posters, produced by the federal Committee on Public Information, featured hallmarks of artists’ work during a period known as the Golden Age of American Illustration. Francis X. Leyendecker created illustrations for men’s clothing advertisements that set a new standard in American masculinity.

trenches. Richard D. Williams donated four works from his collection of early 20thcentury posters, as well as an ashtray created to commemorate the armistice. Columbus resident Colonel Charles Almon Hunt served 40 years in the U.S. Army around the world. During the First World War, he served in France as commander of the 18th Infantry, 1st Division and was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with palm, the French Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Silver Star with first oak leaf cluster. While in France, Colonel Hunt carried this Vacheron & Constantin pocket watch, one of 3,289 ordered by the Army Corps of Engineers from the Swiss manufacturer. Colonel Hunt’s stepgranddaughter, Sandra Strother Hudson, also donated the French map measurer he carried, which allowed military officers to quickly convert map scales. As part of the 2017 exhibition From Flying Aces to Army Boots: World War I and the Chattahoochee Valley, the Museum commissioned artist Danielle Frankenthal to create a site-specific installation. The work, entitled A War Room, contained paintings and sculpture inspired by the ceaseless cycle of war, suffering, glorifying, and forgetting. Her work considered soldiers’ lives during WWI and the 21st-century campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq while drawing on

her parents’ experience as Belgian refugees to America during WWII. The panel from A War Room now in the Museum’s collection prominently features barbed wire, recalling the ferocity of trench warfare. We appreciate the artist’s donation of her work, which helps the Museum continue to integrate art and history objects and interpretation.

T

he child of Italian immigrants, Joseph DiGiorgio was born in Brooklyn and spent most of his life in and around New York. He studied at Cooper Union and augmented his training with lessons from Hans Hofmann, regarded as one of the most influential American art teachers and colorists of the 20th century. DiGiorgio maintained a studio in the Bowery District of Manhattan but traveled across the country, creating heartfelt renderings of various

3

topographies. DiGiorgio worked in series, plumbing the full depths of his subjects; for example, he completed 200 renderings of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, 50 for each season. In the 1980s, he began to explore the Southwest. These sheets provide a glimpse of three different terrains at three different times of day: a canyon at high noon; an aspen grove at dusk; and a mountainous landscape at night. The Columbus Museum is grateful to the artist’s sister and nephew for this generous donation.

FORT BENNING RECEPTION BRINGS MILITARY TOP BRASS, SUPPORTERS TO MUSEUM

T

he new commanding general of the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning joined hundreds of visitors at The Columbus Museum to celebrate the opening of Fort Benning at 100. Major General Gary M. Brito gave remarks at the May 31 reception for the exhibition, which spotlights the 100-year history of one of the country’s largest military posts. The reception also highlighted the military-related From Swords to Plowshares: Metal Trench Art from World War I exhibition. “There is clearly an inseparable bond between Fort Benning and Columbus,” Brito said, “and it’s very clear to me that the seeds of prosperity have been planted for the next 100 years.”

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

WARREN WILLIAMS HOMES ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

P

eople are talking about an exciting new oral history project between The Columbus Museum and residents of the Warren Williams Homes public housing neighborhood. Making Conversation changes the narrative of a place often viewed through unfair stereotypes by bringing underrepresented stories to the forefront,” explained Rebecca Bush, Curator of History at The Columbus Museum. “The goal of Making Conversation is to change the narrative and share residents’ pride in their community.” The project was launched this past spring and will ultimately include a public art installation at Warren Williams and

an exhibition that will be on view at the Museum from December 15, 2018 to May 26, 2019. Making Conversation includes four phases: oral history interviews conducted by volunteers; resident dinners with brief historical programs; collaborative art-making activities for children and teens; and the public art installation, which will be created with resident input. The project team includes Bush, project coordinator Lila Stone, community engagement consultant Sherricka Day, and community outreach coordinator Kennan Ducey. The team has been meeting with Warren Williams residents to gather stories, impressions and pictures of growing up in the homes or in similar neighborhoods. The Making Conversation website includes a

blog and documents the project with video, pictures, and written stories. Residents are also encouraged to investigate their own history through genealogy resources such as Ancestry.com and desktop computers provided by the project. Bush is hopeful that the final products of Making Conversation – the exhibition and art installation – will bring people together across generational, racial, and socioeconomic divides. “This project will affirm that everyone’s story is valued,” Bush said, “and that the Museum and Warren Williams value and support each other as neighbors. The message will be clear that we are a community looking to a more unified future.”

This project is generously supported by the Knight Foundation Fund of the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley. FALL 2018 THE MUSE 9

Why are you members of The Columbus Museum?

We are members of The Columbus Museum because the museum is a local, regional, and national attraction for Columbus, and we want to see the Museum’s presence and collection continue to expand. I love how much the Museum offers to the local community, particularly the free events, and without the support of Museum members, those events wouldn’t be possible. What type of art do you enjoy?

My (Walker) favorite style of art is Romanticism. I am a huge history buff, and when I visited the Louvre, I fell in love with Eugène Delacroix’s paintings, particularly of the Napoleonic Wars. Kelsea and I both enjoy impressionist works, and of course, we love anything my mom, Debbie Garrett, paints, which are typically landscape oil paintings. What is your favorite Museum event?

There are too many wonderful events to choose just one, but I would say Let There Be Art, the concerts in the gardens, and the Master’s Circle events are some of our favorites. Thank you, Kelsea and Walker, for your continuous support of The Columbus Museum!
