Dear Member,

S

ummer is a wonderful time to take a break from the heat and visit The Columbus Museum to view the collections and special exhibitions and to attend one of our many programs. Fantastic Fridays, offering free performances for families by musicians, actors, and storytellers will be back in June and July. One-week summer camps also return during June and July, with each week focusing on a different theme and age group. We also will have a free monthly summer concert series on Thursday evenings in June, July, and August.

Four new exhibitions open this summer, including Civic Spirit, presented in the Galleria Cases. The exhibition looks at the growth of civic-minded organizations in Columbus from the 19th century to today. Works by Columbusborn artist Martha Clippinger will be on view in the Leebern Gallery, while the Woodruff Gallery will present profile portraits. In addition, From Flying Aces to Army Boots: World War I and the Chattahoochee Valley and Close Up: Cinema along the River continue on view in the Third Floor Galleries and the Legacy Gallery, respectively.

week we had strong art sales. We are grateful to the 80 artists who contributed a 10” x 10” work to the event, with proceeds going to educational programs, and the many volunteers who planned the gala, luncheon with Rebecca Wood, and made it possible to hold a weeklong sale. Thank you!

If you have visited the Museum recently, you probably noticed that the front entrance has a new work of art in the fountain. We installed Kindred, a stainless steel sculpture by Atlanta artist Andrew T. Crawford, in late March. The many generous contributions that we received in memory of Mark D. Porter, past president and longtime member of the Board of Trustees, provided the funds for this handsome, soaring work, including installation costs, repebbling the pool, and replacing the lighting.

Crawford, who has work at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, the Georgia Museum of Contemporary Art, and Highlands Performing Arts Center in North Carolina, stated, “…Kindred is based on the observation of the similarities and differences between natural and manmade forms. It finds its origin in objects that exist in environments that are not exclusively of nature or mechanical origins.” To everyone who made it possible for the Museum to remember Mark in a meaningful, tangible way, the Board of Trustees, staff, and I extend heartfelt thanks. Kindred will be on view for our community and visitors to enjoy for years to come.

M

artha Clippinger, who was born and raised in Columbus, is an important, nationallyrecognized emerging artist.

She earned a Bachelor of Art cum laude from Fordham University and a Master of Fine Arts from Rutgers University.

She has been awarded residencies from the MacDowell Colony, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and the Edward F. Albee Foundation. She also received a prestigious Fulbright Foundation grant in 2013–2014.

permanent collection speak specifically to the idea of “The South”: Anni refers to quiltmaking and Anni Albers, who taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina; vortex employs a peach basket, alluding to Georgia’s agriculture as well as migrant labor.

For this exhibition Clippinger will present a selection of work from the past five years as well as new items. The artist’s production currently occurs in two modes: a kind of hybrid painting-sculpture (apparent in Anni and vortex) and translations of her colorful two-dimensional designs into woven carpets. The project will demonstrate the artist’s connection to—and ongoing dialogue with the work of Alma Thomas and Eddie Owens Martin (St. EOM).

Portraits in Profile

L

ong before the “profile pic” and “profiling” gained common currency, artists employed visual representations of specific individuals from the side, rather than head-on or in three-quarter view. Indeed the ancient Greeks believed that relief sculpture originated when a young Corinthian woman traced the silhouette of her lover—departing for battle the next day—on the wall behind him. The Columbus

Museum, like many collecting institutions, contains a number of portraits in profile. This exhibition will highlight this subset of the larger genre. Based in the visual needs of legible authority in the ancient world, the format has remained a vital, if less common, mode for portrait artists up through the present.

C

olumbus residents today know the South Commons as home to the Civic Center and Golden Park, but they might not realize that the city was once surrounded by a public greenbelt. This exhibition utilizes maps, artifacts, and images to examine the former Commons areas set aside

by Columbus’ founders as public green spaces. The South Commons has been home to ball fields, race tracks, and other recreational pursuits since the city’s early years, but similar spaces also existed on the north and east sides of the city. After the Civil War, those areas came to house the first City Hospital, the first residences and schools available to freedmen, and the industrial area that included Golden’s Foundry and facilities for the Central of Georgia Railway, among others. Though the use of these common spaces changed, their purposes continued to benefit the public, whether providing healthcare, connecting Columbus to the rest of the country through rail travel, or offering formal education to African Americans. Even today, many of these areas

mirror their historic goals, bringing residents and visitors together in search of common ground.

CIVIC SPIRIT

AUGUST 12, 2017 – JANUARY 21, 2018 | GALLERIA CASES

U

sing artifacts from the Museum’s permanent collection, as well as objects from local residents and the Columbus State University Archives, this exhibition examines the growth of civic-minded organizations in 19th-century Columbus and their contemporary counterparts. Mirroring nationwide trends, fraternal organizations and local militia units in Columbus, as well as their female auxiliaries, experienced a significant increase in interest and social activities after the Civil War. This rise in civic organizations reflected

growing enthusiasm for philanthropy and so-called voluntary organizations. For African Americans, these groups were vital to staking claims as involved citizens ready to participate in a free society previously denied to them. The exhibition will also explore fraternal and civic organizations active in the area today, which continue to play a vital role in promoting a sense of community and civic philanthropy.

ACQUISITIONS

ART ACQUISITION

C

olumbus-born artist Amy Sherald creates monumental paintings of individuals she encounters in everyday situations, constructing new identities for them through the clothing they wear and the objects they carry. She explains, “I want people to be able to imagine life outside of the circumscribed stereotype, or identity, that can be controlled by many circumstances such as your environment, your parents, your friends, your skin color, your class, etc.

Imagination allows you to bend the rules of the temporal world. I just want [my subjects] to see that a more beautiful world exists beyond the confines of [the given] environment.”

Sherald graduated from St. Anne Pacelli High School in Columbus and received a Bachelor of Art from Clark-Atlanta University in 1997. She earned a Master of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2004, studying with renowned second-generation Abstract Expressionist painter Grace Hartigan. Sherald is known for creating skin tones in a range of grays, challenging our conception of how color has traditionally

signified race and how those conventions might be challenged. In 2016, her submission to the National Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition exhibition—for which there were more than 2,500 entries—was selected for the first prize; Sherald is the first woman to be so honored. That 2016 exhibition is now traveling to institutions across the country, from the Tacoma Art Museum to the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. Her work was also included in Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art, an exhibition organized by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and subsequently appearing at the Speed Museum of Art in Louisville. Dorothy Moss, associate curator of painting and sculpture at the National Portrait Gallery, describes Sherald as “an artist to watch,” and a recent flurry of institutional acquisitions, by the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the National Museum of African American History and Culture among others, seems to confirm this observation.

In late 2014, The Museum announced a new initiative aimed at increasing exposure for African-American artists.

This project, funded through the generous seed gift of $100,000 by patrons Dan and

Kathelen Amos, supports the acquisition of works exclusively by African-American artists. The Museum is planning a campaign to raise additional matching funds through various members of the Columbus community and beyond. The Museum is delighted to announce What’s different about Alice is that she has the most incisive way of telling the truth, 2017, as the first purchase from the Fund for African American Art.

HISTORY ACQUISITIONS Columbus in Times of War

R

ecently, the Museum received the only Confederate breech-loading cannon ever made, generously donated by the W.C. Bradley Company. The Columbus Iron Works on the banks of the Chattahoochee produced most of the Confederate artillery used during the Civil War. Engineer W.J. McAlister made use of the wheel shaft of the sunken steamboat John C. Calhoun to create this cannon as a poten-

tial defense for the city. However, its strong recoil in tests proved problematic even before Union troops broke one of its trunnions to render it inoperable after the Battle of Columbus in 1865. The cannon is still a unique testament to Columbus residents’ ingenuity and can now be seen near the Museum’s front door.

Other recent acquisitions reflect a more recent chapter in Columbus’ military history: civilian involvement with Fort Benning during World War II. Concerns about security and potential sabotage led to the rise of photo identification badges for workers at both U.S. government agencies and civilian factories contracted to produce material for the war effort. At military installations, civilian employee badges provided a quick and easy means of identification as employees entered and went about their workday. Though the name of the woman pictured on this badge is unknown, we know that she came to work at Fort Benning from rural Pennsylvania, seeking a job after clothing factories in her hometown switched to defense manufacturing.

Wearing sweetheart jewelry denoted patriotism and pride in the service of a loved one. The unusual inclusion of a place name on this piece suggests that the sender purchased the pin at Fort Benning and then sent it to a woman in his life, or it might have been purchased by the wearer during a visit to the post. The wings and propeller signify the U.S. Army Air Corps, which had a significant presence at Lawson Army Air Field conduct2

ing training for the Parachute School. The first test platoon of American paratroopers was formed at Fort Benning in June 1940 and the Army Air Corps’ first airborne divisions were activated in August 1942. Another example of this unit’s influence in popular culture is the children’s toy Raggy Doodle, first manufactured

about 1943 and inspired by a similar British paratrooper doll. Raggy Doodle had a cloth body that came in various shades of light and dark brown, as well as a green camouflage pattern. Its parachute, printed with the words “Fort Benning, Georgia,” helped the toy slowly descend when tossed into the air.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Hariot Lippmann If you have visited the Museum Shop, chances are you have met Hariot Lippman.

She has been a volunteer at The Columbus Museum for nearly 30 years. Currently Hariot gives her time in the Museum’s gift shop on Thursdays.

One of her favorite things about volunteering at the Museum is meeting new people who have traveled from all over to visit Columbus. She also enjoys working with the Museum’s staff.

When asked about her favorite work in the Museum’s collection, Hariot gave three: Boat Installation by Dale Chihuly; My Daughter, Alice by William Merritt Chase; and Sara and Her Mother with Baby by Mary Cassatt. Hariot has seven great grandchildren, six grandchildren, and is a mother of two daughters.

She was an elementary school librarian in the Muscogee County School District for 30 years until her retirement. In her spare time Hariot loves to read and play bridge. The Museum thanks Hariot for her dedication to the Museum for so many years!

Join us for an evening alongside local artist Sally Bradley. Bradley was born in Columbus, Georgia. She studied at the University of Georgia, Monash University in Australia, The Art Students League of New York, and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Her work explores the ideas of memory and restructured experience through landscape and figure. Bring your creativity and open mind—we will provide the supplies and light refreshments. S: I’m a fan of art, people, culture, history and engaging events. I joined the Museum because it combines those elements into one big pot and serves up a variety of appealing experiences. I can’t think of anywhere else in the city that you can go to that offers what our Museum has on a regular basis. And I love the staff!

Everyone is helpful and friendly. I feel at home every time I walk through the door.

M: What is your most memorable experience at The Museum?

S: The trip to Bert Russo/Deborah Levy’s house and SCAD in Atlanta. It was my first trip with the Museum. I had so much fun. I was impressed by the personal Chihuly pieces, other collections and SCAD Atlanta. I learned so much in just a few hours. The funny thing is that I almost talked myself out of going. But I’m so glad I went! I knew that as soon as I got off the bus, I wanted to become a member.

M: Why do you think The Museum is important to the community?

S: The museum offers something for everybody regardless of ethnicity, economic class or gender. You can learn about an artist on your lunch break or listen to a live music band in the evenings. You can bring your kids to an interactive workshop or just walk around and enjoy the exhibits. With each experience, you leave with a sense of awareness and a new nugget of information.

Most of the events are offered at little to no cost, which is a big plus. Our Museum connects people to local artists/authors, living legends and rich history. I think these connections are crucial. They help us understand and respect our differences, making for well-rounded and open-minded individuals. These connections add to the strength and overall growth of our community.
