THE COLUMBUS MUSEUM QUARTERLY MAGAZINE

WINTER 2016/2017

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Member,

I

am delighted to announce that the Museum recently acquired a major work by Romare Bearden, a collage titled Madeline Jones’ Wonderful Garden, created in 1977. A superb example by the artist, Madeline Jones’ Wonderful Garden has had only one previous owner, who acquired it from the artist. The work was included in a major retrospective, The Art of Romare Bearden, which the National Gallery organized in 2003. An article by Jonathan Walz, the Museum’s Director of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of American Art, in this issue of The Muse has more information about this important acquisition (see p.4). This past spring, Elizabeth Corn and Philip Brewer, longstanding members of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, became Life Trustees. Both have been wonderful champions and supporters of the Museum, and we are fortunate to count them among the Museum’s friends. In honor of their retirement from active service on the Board, I am pleased to announce that the Museum’s purchase of the collage by Romare Bearden has been made in their honor. Exhibitions opening this winter include The We of Me: The Chosen Families of Carson McCullers on view at the Museum as part of a city-wide celebration of the centennial of her birth. A Columbus native who wrote the classics The Mem-

ber of the Wedding, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, and Reflections in a Golden Eye, McCullers grew up on Stark Avenue in Midtown’s Wynnton neighborhood. She frequently turned to memories of the city in her books. The We of Me: The Chosen Families of Carson McCullers focuses on McCullers' family and friends and includes material that will be shown publicly for the first time.

The mission of the Columbus Museum is to bring American art and history to life for the communities of the Chattahoochee Valley.

2 THE MUSE WINTER 2016/2017

Additions to our staff continued this fall as Mary Lee Doughton became the Manager of the Museum Shop. She brings enthusiasm and great ideas for revitalizing the store. I invite you to stop by the Shop to meet her and see our new inventory. We will kick off the holiday season with our annual Master Circle Dinner, a beautiful event with tables designed by a corps of talented volunteers. The dinner serves as a thank you to our Master Circle, Collector Circle, and Director Circle members for their very generous support. No thanks can ever be sufficient, however, to express our appreciation for all our wonderful members, supporters, and volunteers. You make it possible for the Museum to continue to serve our community with programs and exhibitions, and we are grateful. During the holidays, our fall exhibitions will be on view, including Gordon Parks: Segregation Story; Reflections: African American Life from the Myrna Colley-Lee Collection; and Turning of the Seasons: The Moulthrop Family and the Chattahoochee River Dam Project. Please keep the Museum in mind as a great destination for your family and out-oftown visitors. May you have a wonderful holiday season with family and friends!

THE WE OF ME

The Chosen Families of Carson McCullers

T

his exhibition spotlights Columbus author Carson McCullers, the city she grew up in, and the people she chose to call family. Critically acclaimed since their publication, McCullers’ works offer insight into the physical and cultural landscape of early 20th-century Columbus, as well as the family and friends she knew there. Her evocative descriptions of the streets, buildings, and landmarks inhabited by colorful characters echo the paths and people that she knew as a child in Columbus. Love of her close-knit family and concern for the city’s social and political structures mingle in McCullers’ descriptions of her hometown. Upon her move to New York as an adult, McCullers entered a new world of cultural and intellectual tastemakers. Her intensely personal relationships, both platonic and romantic, created an extended family that exemplified “the we of me” that McCullers and her characters searched for throughout most of their lives.

OPENING RECEPTION

FEBRUARY 2 | 5:30 – 7:30 P.M. | FREE

Join us for a special gallery hop in conjunction with two other Carson McCullers exhibitions on view at Columbus State University's Main and River Park campuses.

Using original documents and artifacts from the collections of the Columbus State University Archives and the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, The We of Me examines McCullers’ childhood in Columbus, her circle of friends in New York, and the influence of these two different worlds in her writing. Much of the material will be on public display for the first time, including correspondence, photographs, and other items meticulously cataloged by the late Dr. Mary Mercer, McCullers’ psychiatrist and close friend who lived with the author for years. Curated with the assistance of Columbus State University interns, the Museum’s exhibition is part of a city-wide celebration of the February 2017 centennial of McCullers’ birth. ACQUISITIONS

Art Acquisition

MADELINE JONES’ WONDERFUL GARDEN

T

he Columbus Museum has long sought a masterwork by Romare Bearden, and we are happy to announce the acquisition of the handsome and important Madeline Jones’ Wonderful Garden, 1977. Romare Bearden is one of the most significant American artists of the twentieth century. His creativity exceeded the bounds of the visual arts to encompass musical composition, costume design, children’s literature, historical scholarship, and social activism. His collages, the medium for which he is probably best known, usually foregrounded African American experience, whether in the rural South or the urban North. In rec4 THE MUSE WINTER 2016/2017

ognition of his many contributions to American art – including the founding and running of Cinque Gallery, intended to encourage and foster emerging African American artists – President Ronald Reagan awarded Bearden the National Medal of Arts in 1987. Madeline Jones’ Wonderful Garden is an exemplary collage from the late 1970s, one of the most productive moments of the artist’s career. Of the thousands of works that Bearden produced during his lifetime, former National Gallery of Art curator Ruth Fine selected this collage as one of only 143 examples for the artist’s long-overdue retrospective (the show traveled to five venues around the

country from late 2003 to early 2005). In the accompanying exhibition catalogue, Fine remarked, “The conflation of woman and nature takes its ultimate form in Bearden’s many versions of Maudell Sleet and Madeline Jones and their effusive gardens.” Indeed, the theme, a celebration of fecundity and bounty, appears frequently throughout art history, from Botticelli’s Primavera to Childe Hassam’s portraits of Celia Thaxter tending flowers. The Columbus Museum’s piece is notable for its intricately cut-out elements and its heavily worked surface, comprised of almost every media for which Bearden is known: ink washes, graphite lines, and intentional scuffing. The work has an excellent provenance of a single owner, being purchased directly from the artist and remaining in that private collection until the recent sale to the Museum. Madeline Jones’ Wonderful Garden joins other collages in the Museum’s holdings by such expert practitioners as Benny Andrews, Radcliffe Bailey, Robert Motherwell, Jay DeFeo, and Robert Rauschenberg. The specific subject, a memory from the artist’s childhood days in Mecklenburg, North Carolina, felicitously makes an appealing connection to the renowned Olmsted garden that surround our Wynnton Road facility. The board of trustees and the staff are pleased to accession this outstanding work of art in honor of Life Trustees Elizabeth T. Corn and Philip L. Brewer, for their many years of service to The Columbus Museum. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES SECOND SATURDAY

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Cam Chandler, President Teen Advisory Group Museum Volunteer Since 2012

Cam is one of the Teen Advisory group’s founding members. As the president he also sits on the Museum’s education committee. He described his favorite part of volunteering at the Museum as the interaction with people. “I have been able to meet artists and spend time with archaeologists. I'm extremely thankful to the Museum for providing the opportunity for me to meet such a wonderful group of people from throughout the community, ” said Cam. Cam has assisted with several programs such as Fall Festival and Fantastic Fridays. He has also served as a tutor and teacher’s assistant for the Columbus Scholar’s Program the past four years. When asked about his favorite piece from the Museum’s collection, he responded, “Bo Barlett’s Homecoming is my favorite piece. One obvious reason is that I’m a senior at Columbus High School (CHS) and the painting is of a CHS homecoming bonfire. I also like the painting because I feel it’s a great representation of what it is like to grow up in Columbus. The painting shows the southern charm, the small town feel, and the traditions that are still a big part of growing up here.”
