But the fun doesn’t stop there — Zoombezi Bay has an exciting new attraction called Baboon Lagoon, the Safari Golf Club has completed its renovations, the Zoo is bringing the dinosaurs back for an action-packed second year, and the Wilds continues to offer amazing tours that let visitors travel to Asia and Africa without a passport!

As animal lovers and zoo directors, our lives have been filled with animals from the very beginning. Our children can’t remember a time before helping groom the goats in the petting zoo or being captivated by the striking colors of the fish in Discovery Reef. We’ve grown up at the Zoo and our families have too … we know a lot of you have done the same. Nothing makes us smile bigger than when we see people creating lifelong memories at our parks!

Stingray Bay is back for its third season. Last year, Epaulette sharks were added to the mix for an exciting twist.

The stingrays and sharks return to once again entertain and amaze.

The Stingray Bay experience encourages guests to interact with the Zoo’s school of cownose and southern stingrays. You will be able to watch these beautiful animals “fly” through the water, or dip your hand in and come in contact with these gentle, majestic creatures. You may also even have the chance to touch the sharks.

Epaulette sharks are a creamy brownish color and are generally nocturnal.

They are also known for being able to survive up to an hour with very little oxygen without suffering any ill effects.

They are by and large harmless to

humans and can be found in the shallow waters of coral reef areas off the coast of New Guinea and northern Australia.

Located in Jungle Jack’s Landing near Zoombezi Bay, Stingray Bay is home to more than 40 southern and cownose stingrays, two sharks and countless cleaner fish. Staff and volunteers monitor the 18,000-gallon saltwa-

ter pool, inform guests about the best ways to touch the animals and answer questions. Educational interpreters explain the role of stingrays, sharks in the environment.

Safe for all ages, the landscaped pool features a waterfall and a wide ledge for toddlers to lean against when touching the animals. The rays’ barbs have been carefully trimmed off their whiplike tails. This painless procedure is similar to cutting a human’s fingernails. The stingrays visit the center of the pool to rest.

You will have oceans of fun at the Zoo’s Stingray Bay.

Animal Encounters Village Opening for its sixth season, Animal Encounters Village (AEV) offers a distinct experience each day! Located in Jungle Jack’s Landing, right near the Zoo entrance, this one-of-a-kind, up-close and engaging animal attraction will thrill people of all ages.

Each day is different with new animals to meet. Stop by to be part of a flamingo walk, sloth encounter, tortoise walkabout or to catch a glimpse of some other AEV residents. Also, daily at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., you can get face-toface with one of our endangered African black-footed penguins during their swims.

You can purchase a pin at the Village to support many of the AEV animals and the efforts to save their species.

The Village opens Memorial Day weekend, so stop over for a special experience. Show topics change frequently and are held at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., seven days a week.

Animals on Safari

The Animals on Safari show brings you face-to-face with many amazing animals — ranging from a crawling warthog to a tightropewalking domestic cat! This choreographed animal show includes Cordy the boxer mix and Lola the bulldog — showing off their amazing skills while making it hard for staff to prepare for opening day at “camp.”

The show was created by worldrenowned animal trainer and Columbus native Joel Slaven, spe-

cifically for the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The most exciting part of this amazing show is that all the domestic animal stars are rescues, and many of them came from local shelters and rescue groups right here in central Ohio.

Opening for its fifth season, Animals on Safari never disappoints. Stop by to see the show at 12 p.m., 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. on weekdays, with the addition of a 6 p.m. show on weekends. Gates close promptly at show time.

SAFARI GOLF CLUB Experience a whole new breed of golfing at the Zoo

What do eagles, red-tailed hawks, whitetailed deer, albatrosses and minks all have in common?

For the sharp-eyed golfer, they are all sights that can be seen at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s Safari Golf Club.

Our goal is to make Safari Golf Club a championship, destination facility. During the past couple of years, Safari has upgraded its facilities by adding new, picturesque holes, realigning existing holes and substantially improving the level of maintenance, as well as paving all of the cart paths.

With more than 6,800 yards, we reduced the distances between the greens and tees, which has improved our pace of play by almost 20 minutes.

We worked with world-famous golf course architect Dr. Michael Hurdzan to develop five new holes, as well as three new greens and eight new tees. Each and every putt is a true test of skill.

In addition, we are making upgrades to our conservation areas to make them more attractive to all kinds of native fauna, including golfers.

But that’s not all.

Our pro shop features new equipment and apparel (featuring Nike and Titleist brands) to please even the most discerning golfer.

For added convenience, golfers can schedule tee times online anytime, and receive e-mail specials available only to our players.

Our service staff — from the pro shop to starters to player assistants — has undergone extensive training to make each player’s round of golf even more enjoyable. We have plenty of golf carts in our fleet so no one ever has to walk — unless they want the exercise.

At the Safari Grill, we’ve expanded and upgraded our menu to offer more choices at even lower prices including new varieties of beer on tap.

GOLFING EVENTS

In 2014, Safari Golf Club will again partner with the Memorial Tournament to bring its youth exhibition to Safari on Wednesday, May 28. This provides an opportunity for young players to see and learn from real PGA touring pros right at Safari Golf Club.

The Zoo will again host its own tournament, Jungle Jack’s Conservation Cup, a scramble guaranteed to provide fun, great food and gifts and exciting golf — and an appearance from our own Jack Hanna.
