After saying many, many nice things about her longtime friend and former co-worker Norma Harper, the 2016 Young at Heart Senior of the Year, Sue Bartley thought of one more: “I’ve always said to Norma, ‘In my next life I want to come back just like you.’ I used to say that all the time, and I meant it.�

Harper, a University District resident who doesn’t like people knowing how old she is, admitted in a recent interview that she’s no stranger to awards for her myriad volunteer efforts. These include ones over the years from the ADAMH board and Makea-Wish Foundation. She received a 1991 Columbus Dispatch Community Service Award and is a 2002 inductee into the Senior Citizen Hall of Fame.

And she’s the leader for more than 20 years of a Mexican folk-dance troupe.

That’s how Carol Wigfield of Delaware came to know Harper. Originally, both participated in a folk-dance program at the Whetstone Community Center, but a man named Bill Stewart began teaching some of the participants Mexican folk-dance steps, and a separate group was formed. “When we were younger we did a lot of festivals,�

Wigfield said. “Now we do mostly rest homes because most of us are in our 70s and 80s.�

Protect your joints and prevent pain Joints play vital roles in the human body, forming the connections between bones and facilitating movement. Damage to the joints can be especially painful, and that damage may result from conditions such as osteoarthritis or gout.

While not all joint pain is debilitating, the discomfort of joint pain is such that it’s wise for adults to take steps to protect their joints with the hope of preventing joint pain down the road. Recognizing that joint pain can negatively affect quality of life, the Arthritis Foundation (AF) offers the following joint protection tips to men and women. • Forgo fashion with regard to footwear. When women choose their footwear, fashion should not be their top priority. According to the Arthritis Foundation, three-inch heels stress the feet seven times more than one-inch heels and heels put additional stress on knees, possibly increasing women’s risk for osteoarthritis. Though heels may be fashionable, the risk of developing joint pain is not worth making the fashion statement. • Get some green in your diet. A healthy diet pays numerous dividends, but many may not know that a healthy diet can help prevent joint pain. Green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and parsley are high in calcium and can reduce age-related bone loss while also slowing cartilage destruction. • Shed those extra pounds. If you start including more healthy vegetables in

your diet, you might just start to lose a little weight as well. Such weight loss also can help your joints, as the AF notes that every extra pound a person gains puts four times the stress on his or her knees. The AF also notes that research has shown that losing as little as 11 pounds can reduce a person’s risk of osteoarthritis of the knee by 50 percent. • Hit the pool. Swimming is a great full-body workout and can be especially helpful to the joints. The buoyancy of water supports the body’s weight, reducing stress on the joints and minimizing pain as a result. If possible, swimmers already experiencing pain should swim in heated pools, which can help relieve pain. While you can still benefit from swimming in pools with colder temperatures, cold water may not soothe the joints like warm water can. • Take breaks at work. Many people develop joint pain thanks to their jobs.

If you spend all day sitting at a desk or standing on your feet, try to find a greater balance between the two. Joints can grow stiff from sitting all day, while standing throughout your work day can stress the joints. Take a short break every 30 minutes to stand up and walk around if you spend most of your day at a desk. If you stand a lot at your job, stop to sit down for a few minutes once every half hour.

People always ask Norma Harper how at her age—whatever that might actually be—she stays as active as she does and continues to do so much volunteer work, including serving on the Wexner Medical Center service board. “The more you do for other people, the less you think about yourself,� the native of Painesville, West Virginia, replied—and it’s something she says often.

Harper grew up mostly in the Buckeye State, including on a farm near Johnstown from the seventh grade on. She eventually was one of 14 children, 11 of them girls; 10 are still alive. “God’s been good to us,� Harper said.

Harper went to work for Ohio Bell in

Columbus for 15 years after graduating high school.

She next became a secretary at Ohio State University and remained there for 31 years.

That’s how she came to know Sue Bartley. “When I first met her, we just kind of clicked,� the Mount Gilead resident said. “We worked together and finally got to be good friends. You could never find a better work partner than Norma. “We’re not blood sisters, but she has always been like my sister.� “She’s very outgoing, very loyal and protective of her family,� Wigfield said. “Family is definitely first with her. “The dancers are her family, also.� “I didn’t think I was getting any other kinds of awards,� Harper said. “This really surprised me.�

Jim Clements helps local car show and community grow with volunteer efforts

By Nisey Sebak Nominator The Vintage Auto Club of Delaware, Ohio is honored to nominate Jim Clements because we know he is ‘Young at Heart’! Even though he retired six years ago he has maintained a full time volunteer commitment of being the leader of the “The Blast From The Past Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show� in Delaware, Ohio each July. This year on July 23, will be the 23rd annual “Blast� and over the years this event has raised and donated over $250,000 to OhioHealth Hospice.

Without Jim at the helm of 100 plus volunteers and making the majority of the community connections, this event could never provide the donations, nor the pleasure to the thousands of families and individuals that come out each year.

Not to mention the economic impact this day has on the merchants of Delaware.

As with many annual events, Jim starts the minute one year’s event is over to begin organizing the next year’s car show.

Under his direction the event has grown from a medium sized car event to one that encompasses all of downtown Delaware with an annual average over the last three years of 700 plus vehicles. His energy and organizational skills have him being the main contact with the City of Delaware,

Grandview Jollysteppers and Worthington Strutters Instructor: Mary Bova-Ervin Since 1981, the Grandview Jollysteppers have been entertaining crowds with their enthusiastic line dance performances. The fun and energetic Worthington Strutters line dancers have been performing since 1989.

The group is also inspired by the costumes’ beautiful colors and the excitement of the music. They are a close-knit “family” of dancers that love folk dancing. How to determine if downsizing is for you As men and women retire or approach retirement age, many opt to downsize their homes.

Such a decision can save older adults substantial amounts of money while also liberating them from the hassle of maintaining large homes they no longer need.

Downsizing to smaller homes or apartments is a significant step, one that homeowners should give ample consideration before making their final decisions. The following are a handful of tips to help homeowners determine if downsizing to smaller homes is the right move.

• Get a grip on the real estate market. Downsizing is not solely about money, but it’s important that homeowners consider the real estate market before putting their homes up for sale. Speak with a local realtor or your financial advisor about the current state of your real estate market. Downsizing can help homeowners save money on utilities, taxes and mortgage payments, but those savings may be negated if you sell your house in a buyer’s market instead of a seller’s market. If you think the current market won’t get you the price you are hoping for, delay your downsize until the market rebounds.

Making new friends after a move Downsizing and other life changes often find seniors leaving their comfort zones to move to new neighborhoods or regions of the country.

It can be difficult to leave those comfort zones behind, especially when it means saying goodbye to close friends or family members. Establishing new social circles as a senior can be challenging. But with a little effort and the right attitude, seniors can meet new people and enjoy the excitement that comes with new friendships.

• Join a club. If you have a particular hobby or interest, rekindle it in your new location. Find a local gardening club, churchsponsored organization or fitness center where you can meet like-minded men and women. Ask the real estate agent who helped you relocate

to make suggestions on where to find community information and read community notices in the local newspaper.

• Get a dog. Dogs make great companions inside of the house and also serve as an ice breaker when you are outdoors.

Take plenty of walks and take advantage of opportunities for conversation when people come up to you to inquire about your dog. Explain your situation and you may make some new friends along the way.

• Volunteer your time. Many people make new friends through volunteering. Volunteer and you’re likely to meet people who share the same interests as you. Sign up with a favorite charity or volunteer at nonprofit events and look for familiar faces. Start talking to those

people you meet again and again.

• Participate in church events. Places of religious worship are often cornerstones of a community, and they frequently host different events to get parishioners or members together.

Read the bulletin and get involved in pot lucks, retreats, movie nights and other church-sponsored events.

• Work at a school.

Schools also serve as hubs of community activity. Volunteer or work for a local school and you will soon find yourself immersed in your community’s weekday hustle and bustle. This is a great way to meet people and learn more about your new neighborhood in the process.

• Host your own party.

Go out on a limb and plan a

‘new to the neighborhood’ party. Put invitations in neighbors’ mailboxes and invite everyone over for snacks and cocktails.

Remember, neighbors may

be just as nervous about new faces as you are, and a party is a great way to break the ice.

Change can be hard for people starting out in

new communities.

Medication mismanagement can be prevented OsteoStrong Columbus

Medication management is an important issue for seniors and their families. Failure to properly manage medications can threaten the lives of seniors, highlighting the emphasis families must place on ensuring seniors take their medications in strict adherence to their physicians’ instructions.

Polypharmacy, or the taking of multiple medications for different conditions, can be a potential health hazard for the thousands of seniors who must manage health conditions with prescription drugs.

Harmful drug interactions are a result of the confusion that can arise when seniors take multiple medications at the same time.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists estimates that more than 34 percent of senior citizens are prescribed medications by more than one physician, and 72 percent use medications they were prescribed more than six months prior.

Many people also have begun “pharmacy shopping” to save money. According to a study published in 2010 in American Nurse Today, 44 percent of men and 57 percent of women older than age 65 take five or more medications per week, with some taking as many as 10.

Medication confusion is one risk, but older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips.

• Keep a running list of medications.

Maintain a list of all medications being taken, noting both prescription and over-the-counter medications and any supplements and herbs. Provide a copy to

any new doctors you visit and any new pharmacies you patronize.

• Use pill sorters. Medication sorters can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication management. Organizers have daily slots and may also differentiate between nighttime and daytime medications.

• Understand why each medication is being prescribed. Ask your pharmacist and doctor to explain why each medication is prescribed. This information should be printed on the prescription label. Some drugs designed for one symptom may actually be used to treat other issues as well.

• Ask for help. Some seniors may benefit from friendly reminders from a loved one regarding when to take certain medications, especially if they need to take multiple doses throughout the day.

Cognitively impaired seniors may require the services of a visiting nurse or another caregiver.

• Recognize that not all medications are right for seniors. The American Geriatrics Society maintains a list of medications that older adults should avoid or take with extreme caution. Some drugs pose a high risk of side effects or interactions, while others are less effective. Discuss alternatives with your physician if you are prescribed one of these medications.

• Keep a medication diary. Record any side effects that occur and how the medications make you feel. Always bring up issues promptly with a doctor.

Proper medication management can help seniors avoid drug-related accidents or worse.
