For these activities, for the long and eventful life he’s lived and for his “optimistic view of life, Wesley Glen neighbor Corene Grube nominated Spires for the Young at Heart Senior of the Year Award. He was recently named the 21st annual recipient of the honor from ThisWeek Community News. The award is sponsored by the Modlich Monument Co. and was started by Suburban News Publications. It was taken over by ThisWeek Community News when the two organizations merged in 2012. The Young at Heart Festival for seniors again this year will be a standalone event. It will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, July 23 at the Aladdin Shrine Center, 3850 Stelzer Road – one of the final public events at the northeast Columbus location before the Shrine Center is relocated to Grove City. The festival will feature more than 35 vendor booths and activities with ongoing entertainment. A full day of entertainers is scheduled, with new acts going on every 25 minutes. New this year is an Activities Zone with games including Name that Tune and bingo, take-home crafts, prizes and other giveaways. Senior of the Year committee and making repairs for other residents in the workshop at no charge, other than for materials. Fresh from a water aerobics class with neighbor and nominator Grube, Spires recently looked back on all the volunteer work he has done over the years, and in some cases, continues to do. He remains active with the St. Vincent DePaul Society at Immaculate Conception Church, and has been since 1985. He helps the group prepare sandwiches once a month for a homeless shelter, Spires said. For many years, Spires made regular visits to a nursing home in Worthington, where he placed first his mother, then his mother-in-law and still later, his father-in-law. Even after the last of his older relatives died in 1982, Spires said he continued to stop in to see residents he had gotten to know and to meet new ones. He had to give that up two years ago. Two years ago also marked the end of almost two decades of service as a volunteer ombudsman for nursing homes in central Ohio. Spires also was a Red Cross volunteer for 17 years, traveling frequently to help out at major disaster sites around the country. Spires logged 10,000 hours as a volunteer at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital and helped out with a food stand for 29 years on the route of the annual Tour of the Scioto River Valley bike ride. kparks@thisweeknews.com

How to avoid growing bored in retirement From the moment young men and women first walk into the office for their first day as a working professional until the day they officially retire, the notion of planning for retirement is never far from their minds. But when the day to hang up the briefcase and donate all those business suits arrives, some retirees wonder what to do next. Some retirees know exactly how they will spend their days when they no longer have to work, while others who decide to play it by ear may find themselves battling boredom. For those among the latter group, it’s important to understand that many retirees find themselves bored once they no longer have to focus on a career. Jobs keep men and women busy and provide a sense of purpose in their lives, so it’s understandable that retirees feel bored once those jobs are no longer a part of their lives. But just because you no longer have an office to go to every day does not mean life cannot

be as fulfilling or even more fulfilling than it was when you were still working. You just need to find something to avoid succumbing to retirement boredom. • Work part-time. Though it might seem odd to start working right after you retire, a part-time job can provide the type of structure you have grown accustomed to without all of the responsibility that comes with a full-time career. Part-time jobs can range from consultancy work that makes use of your professional experience to something entirely different like landscape maintenance at a nearby golf course that gets you out of the house and enjoying the warmer seasons. Whichever you choose, make sure it’s something you find fun and interesting. • Embrace a new hobby. Working professionals often say they wish they had time to pursue a hobby. Now that you are retired, you have all the time in the world to do just that. Whether it’s perfecting

your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it. • Get in shape. If retirement boredom has started to negatively affect your mood, one great way to conquer your boredom

and improve your mood at the same time is to start exercising. Exercise is a natural mood enhancer. When the body exercises, it releases chemicals knowns as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. In addition, regular exercise has been shown to reduce stress,

boost self-esteem and improve sleep. Working out at a gym also is a great way to meet fellow retirees in your community, and the energy you have after exercising may give you the boost you need to pursue other hobbies. • Volunteer. If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet like-minded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom. Retirees who love to travel can combine their passion for volunteering with their love of travel by signing up to work with an international relief organization that travels abroad to help the less fortunate. Upon retiring, many retirees initially find themselves coping with boredom. But there are many ways to avoid the restlessness of retirement.

Recommended immunizations for those age 50+ Routine immunizations can keep people safe and healthy. Certain vaccinations can prevent diseases from producing symptoms, while others can lessen the duration of an illness or make conditions less severe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that the elderly are more likely to die of a vaccine-preventable disease than other age groups. The immune system begins to decline as we age, so the body can benefit from the disease-fighting boost provided by vaccinations. Individuals at any age should discuss immunizations with their doctors, but it’s a particularly important conversation for those age 50 and older. Vaccine schedules and recommendations may vary depending on where a person lives, but the

following immunization recommendations are offered courtesy of the CDC. • Influenza: An annual flu shot can help prevent the nearly 36,000 deaths that occur due to flu each year in the United States. The flu vaccine is designed to combat the current strain of flu, so it is recommended anytime between September to March, which is the prime flu season. People age 50 and older should opt for the injection rather than the nasal form of the vaccine. • Tdap: This vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis and is especially necessary for people who have close contact with young infants. Pertussis, or whooping cough, can be passed on to youngsters and make them very ill. If you’ve never received a Tdap vaccine, the CDC suggests

getting it at least once. Individual tetanus boosters should be received every 10 years. • Pneumococcal: Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by the pneumococcus bacteria. It can cause pneumonia, blood infection, ear infections, and even bacterial meningitis. This vaccine is given to

adults age 65 and older or to younger adults at their physiciansÕ discretion. • Hepatitis A: Individuals with medical, occupational or lifestyle conditions, such as healthcare workers or people with chronic liver disease, may need a two-dose series of the hepatitis A vaccine. Adults who are avid travelers to various parts of the world that may bring them in contact with animals or people who do not receive the same course of immunizations may need additional vaccines. Speak with a doctor about which immunizations are recommended before travel.

Summer Insulation

5 Reasons You Need Insulation this Summer By Carolyn Dix, Dispatch Media Group

We often associate insulation with keeping our homes warm in the winter. But did you know it also helps you stay cool and comfortable at home in the summer? Dominic Leone, a contractor with Gale Insulation – Masco Contractor Services, shares five ways insulation can benefit homeowners during the summer months.

1 Keep your cool While insulation keeps the heat inside your home during the winter months, it also helps keep heat from getting inside your home during the summer months. “Insulation has a year-round effect on the temperature of a house,” Leone said. And when it comes to beating the heat, “the attic is definitely the first priority,” he said, noting that temperatures in the attic can reach upwards of 120 degrees in the summer. Proper insulation and ventilation will help keep your attic—and as a result, your home—cooler during the summer heat. An energy audit can help you determine if there is proper insulation in your attic to help you keep your cool.

2 Get comfortable There are few things more annoying than fighting over what temperature the thermostat is set at when one person is sweating in one room, and one person is shivering in another. The solution may just be insulation. Leone noted that in two-story homes, one floor—usually the top floor—is often warmer than the other. If you live in a large ranch-style home, you may notice different temperatures in different rooms or in different parts of the house. This happens when insulation is not evenly distributed through the walls or in the attic. “The air conditioner cools a home more evenly when insulation is evenly distributed,” Leone said. So if you find yourself at odds with family members over the thermostat this summer, you may want to check the insulation.

Charting New Courses in Senior Care There’s no doubt about it, senior care has come to mean something very different than it did even ten years ago. Today’s seniors are more active, are living on their own longer and are taking an active role in managing their healthcare needs. In Columbus, four centers operated by Peregrine Health Services have kept pace with these new demands, offering seniors a healthcare experience tailored to their very needs. Whether looking for short-term rehabilitation following a hospital stay, assisted living or longer-term skilled nursing, you’ll find the care you need in a center that’s conveniently located in your community. As a locally held company, not a national chain, Peregrine has built strong relationships with the region’s major healthcare systems and within the physician community. This independence further allows us to remain nimble and flexible in meeting the exacting needs of the seniors and families we serve. Learn more today by contacting one of our centers directly. Our admissions specialists will answer all your questions and help you schedule a tour.

You may not realize it, but insulation does more than just help regulate the interior temperature of your home and keep it comfortable. It also helps control noise, Leone said. “It absolutely helps with noises like street traffic and railroads,” he noted. It also comes in handy when everyone is out and about enjoying the outdoors and having parties during summer months.

4 Winter woes Many people think of insulation as something they need in the winter, so they wait until fall to have it installed. But, Leone noted that if you have insulation installed during summer, your contractor is likely to have more flexibility to work around your schedule. “Contractors tend to get more backed up in the fall,” he said, “when everyone is rushing to get insulation ahead of the winter.”

5 Spending money It may seem counterintuitive, but shelling out the cash for insulation now can mean cost savings for years to come. “You get a significant savings on your energy bill, when you have proper insulation,” Leone said. “You are helping your wallet out.”

Entertainment line up Mexican Folk Dancers

Grove City Groovers

Director: Norma Harper

Director: Jean Hamilton

For the past 20 years, the Mexican Folk Dancers, a group of happy, well-seasoned, nonprofessional folk dancers, have been drawn to the musical sounds of Mexico. The group is also inspired by the costumes’ beautiful colors and the excitement of the music. They are a closeknit “family” of dancers that love folk dancing.

The Grove City Groovers have been performing together for six years. They are a group of seniors that enjoy dancing for fun and exercise. The group will get you moving with their toe tapping, upbeat, fun music and moves!

Grove City Western Squares Instructor: Bob Daye In April of 2002, several square dance couples met together to form a club which they hoped would take a new direction under the leadership of caller and club founder, Eldon Lovingshimer. The group motto is “It’s fun to have fun”. Thanks go out to Dave Stuthard who worked tirelessly as the club instructor from 2003 to 2010 and to Bob Daye who took over and is still giving his all to class instruction. Snack foods that promote better sleep According to the National Sleep Foundation, changes in sleep patterns are a part of the aging process. Many people experience difficulty falling asleep and then staying asleep as they age, and that difficulty can make men and women over 50 feel more tired during the day. But even though difficulty sleeping may be a part of aging, that does not mean men and women over 50 cannot take steps to improve their sleeping patterns. For example, certain snack foods may help to improve quality of sleep, especially when these foods replace less healthy snacking options. While men and women over

50 should always consult with their physicians before making any changes to their diets, the AARP notes that the following are a handful of snack foods that promote better sleep. • Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral with musclerelaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier. • Bananas: Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid

tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep. • Cheese and crackers: One more traditional snack may just help you get a better night’s sleep. Cheese and crackers contain tryptophan and carbohydrates, which can induce a better night’s sleep See SNACK FOOD on page 16

and help you fall asleep sooner. • Cherries: Cherries contain the sleep hormone melatonin, and the AARP notes that recent studies indicated that participants who drank tart cherry juice on a daily basis fell asleep more quickly and slept longer and better than participants who did not. • Hummus: The primary ingredient in hummus is chickpeas, which are loaded with tryptophan, folate and vitamin B6. Folate has proven especially beneficial to older men and women who need help regulating their sleep patterns, while vitamin B6 helps the body regulate its clock. • Peanut butter: Peanut butter is another snacking item loaded with tryptophan. Spread some peanut butter on a carbohydrate, whether it’s a slice of toast or some crackers, before going to bed, and you may enjoy a better, longer sleep. • Walnuts: Like cherries, walnuts contain melatonin, which can contribute to a longer, more restful night’s sleep. Walnuts also can help regulate stress, which is a leading cause of sleeping difficulty. Many men and women experience difficulty sleeping as they age. But the right foods may just help combat such problems and help men and women get a more adequate night’s sleep.

How to eat after 50 As people age, their dietary needs begin to change. Foods that were once staples of your diet as a youth may be restricted once you hit a certain age, while other foods you may have always avoided may now be necessary to fuel and support a healthy body. Eating healthy foods and exercising may not be enough to sustain health, as hormonal changes and other health effects as a person reaches age 50 can have a profound impact on his or her

nutritional requirements. The following are a few things men and women over 50 may want to consider as they look to eat a healthy diet for years to come.

(10 µg), according to Canada’s Food Guide. Without adequate vitamin D, bone strength and health can deteriorate because vitamin D promotes calcium absorption. Vitamin D also has other roles, including helping neuromuscular and immune function and reducing inflammation.

Vitamin D Both men and women age 50 and up have a reduced ability to produce vitamin D through exposure to the sun. Extra vitamin D will be needed from foods and supplements. Everyone over the age of 50 should take a daily vitamin D supplement of 400 IU

How to eat entary lifestyle. The best way to get fiber is through diet. Leave the skins on fruit and vegetables and choose whole fruits over juices. Whole-grain breads and cereals also are good sources of fiber. Dry beans and lentils can add a fiber boost. Always increase fiber slowly to determine your tolerance.

saturated fats. Nutrient-rich unsaturated fats can guard against heart conditions, protect against stroke, keep skin supple, and even help men and women maintain good neurological health. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in nuts, olives, seeds and fatty fishes. Increase protein According to Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as they age, men and women need more protein in their diets to maintain their muscle mass. The

amount of protein needed at a younger age no longer may be adequate. Look for lean sources of protein from fish and poultry. Beans are also a low-fat source of protein that can help fulfill daily protein requirements.

More fiber Eating more fiber can help with digestive and intestinal problems, such as constipation. Constipation can occur when fiber intake is not enough, coupled with a more sed-

a decrease in the energy required to maintain body weight, so caloric intake should be adjusted accordingly. More water As a person ages, his or her body may not signal it is thirsty as well as it once did, so it’s possible that you may not recognize when you are thirsty or dehydrated. The Mayo Clinic recommends around nine to 10 cups of beverages per day to remain hydrated. Eating healthy and changing one’s diet is important as a person ages, as dietary needs at age 50 may be quite different from what they were at age 30.

Fewer calories The National Institute on Aging says women over the age of 50 need between 1,600 and 2,000 calories, depending on how physically active they are. Men need between 2,000 and 2,400 calories per day. With each passing year there is

Home remedies for joint pain can provide relief Stiff, painful joints affect a vast number of people. According to the American College of Rheumatology, arthritis and other rheumatic diseases afflict roughly 23 percent of Americans. The number of people living with arthritis is expected to increase as the Baby Boomer generation continues to age. Treatments for joint pain and stiffness range from medication to physical therapy. Finding the right regimen may take some effort, including some trial and error. For those looking for treatments they can try at home, consider these homespun remedies. (Note: Check with a physician to confirm the safety of alternative treatments before adding herbs to or modifying your existing medications.) • Exercise more. Regular movement helps to maintain flexibility in the body’s joints. Those with joint pain may shy away from exercise, but they could be doing themselves a disservice. Low-impact exercises, like swimming and water aerobics, can work out muscles and joints without adding extra stress. Walking can replace jogging or

running, and yoga and pilates may be just the thing for deep stretching. • Lose weight. Joint pain is often tied to obesity. Losing just a few pounds can ease up strain on certain joints, such as the hips, feet and knees. Shedding weight can improve mobility and decrease pain and potential future damage to joints. Exercise goes hand-in-hand with healthy eating to lose weight. • Consider hot and cold therapies. Using a heating pad, hot shower or bath or an ice pack can work wonders on arthritis-related pains. Hot treatments will loosen up stiff joints, while cold therapy is best for acute pain relief. Do not apply hot and cold packs to the skin directly, as this can injure the skin. Wrap them in a towel first before application. • Include antiinflammatory foods and beverages in your diet. Explore the many different natural foods and herbs that are purported to reduce inflammation in the body. Ginger, turmeric, flaxseed, grape juice, and bromelain can alleviate inflammation and stiffness. Foods such as fatty fish and nuts high in omega-3 fatty acids

also will help fight inflammation. Blueberries, garlic, celery, and kelp should be included in diets as well. • Go for a massage. The Arthritis Foundation says regular massages can help reduce pain and stiffness and improve range of motion. The massage therapist should have experience working on people with arthritis. In addition, massages

should be performed by licensed physical therapists and guided by a doctorÕs recommendation. • Increase magnesium intake. Magnesium can alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.
