Young at Heart in Westerville at Villa Milano happens July 18th, and Young at Heart in Hilliard happens a week later on Thursday, July 25 at the Makoy Center.

Orr made most of opportunity

By ANDREW KING ThisWeekNEWS.com At 62, Bob Orr had accomplished about as much as anyone could expect.

Orr had spent 43 years in TV news for a variety of networks, including roles as an anchor with WBNS-10TV in Columbus and on CBS News’ national broadcasts of major stories, such as the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks or the Boston Marathon bombing.

But in 2016, the newly retired Orr had one thing left to check off his list of accomplishments.

Despite his success in news, Orr always had dreamed of being a baseball broadcaster.

“My dream job was to be the play-by-play voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates,” he said with a laugh. “But I looked around and did the math and realized that for every sports job, there were seven or eight news jobs.”

After a year of retirement, however, a colleague from Philadelphia called to tell Orr he had a special opportunity for him. He said Orr couldn’t know what it was and wasn’t allowed to say no.

Orr committed, and his friend revealed that Orr would call two innings of a Philadelphia Phillies spring-training game in Clearwater, Florida.

Calling the game was difficult, and Orr wasn’t sure how good he was at it. But he loved it.

“It was so much fun,” said Orr, now 63. “As I was walking to the car that night with my wife, I thought to myself, ‘Well, that puts a button on it.’ That was the one piece I was never able to do. It scratched the itch.”

After a career filled with major accomplishments, Orr’s ultimate satisfaction after two innings of baseball was somewhat in jest. But the achievement just a year after leaving work sums up Orr’s view of retirement.

“People, I think, look at retirement as an end – it’s kind of a destination,” he said. “It’s nothing like that. It’s really kind of like your

next job. The fun thing about that next job, though, is that you set the schedule and you can kind of pick your spots – travel when you want to, do what you want to – and that’s a luxury no worker bee ever has. So I’ve approached retirement not as the end, but as the next phase. I’m loving it.”

Of course, it will be difficult for Orr to achieve more in his retired years than he did as a professional.

Many in central Ohio know Orr from his time anchoring broadcasts for WBNS-10TV from 1978 to 1985 and from 1988 to 1993. He also participated in the creation of the Children’s Miracle Network telethon in 1983, which he anchored for seven years.

“Those seven years of anchoring the telethon ... were great times because we were really able to do something I thought made a difference in the community,” he said. “I got very close with people at (Nationwide) Children’s Hospital and the staff there. ... The news was the news and that was the job, but the telethon was bigger than that.

It was making a palpable difference in people’s lives, and that was really special.”

In Columbus, he covered major events like the 1993 riot at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, where he was requested by inmates to hold a broadcast from within the prison to share their demands.

“It was very dramatic and a little unnerving, but it was obviously important,” he said. “We had dead prisoners and a dead guard.

The good news is that after we got involved and other people got involved ... the inmate takeover ended with no additional deaths.

So I always felt that was kind of a monumental achievement on behalf of a lot of different people.”

When he returned home after the “harrowing, dicey situation,” he had job offers from both NBC News and CBS News. He agreed to move to CBS and spent the remainder of his career – 1993 to 2015 – doing national stories.

“It was the same job but with higher stakes and greater pressure,” he said. “I wasn’t anchoring the news so it didn’t have that kind of lead-performance aspect, but it was a great journalistic opportunity. I always viewed myself as a reporter first and anchor second.”

At CBS, he started on the aviation-safety beat, covering a variety of plane crashes and other incidents. That led him to being a major part of the network’s 9/11 coverage.

Eventually, he became a homeland security and justice correspondent covering terrorism, counterintelligence, the Islamic State and more, which led to coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing, the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, and the theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado.

“It gave me kind of a leading view of major events,” he said. “It’s cliché to say it was a front-row seat to history, but that’s really what it was. Every time something major happened ... we would go into special coverage almost immediately and that meant I would be involved, usually in a hybrid anchor/reporter role.”

Since his retirement in 2015, Orr and his wife, Susie, have moved to Naples, Florida. He said the pair spend a lot of time traveling and recently visited Russia, Australia, New Zealand and Norway.

They also spend as much time as possible with their three daughters, Ashley Baker, Whitney Williams (both central Ohio residents) and Meg Bice, and their grandchildren Zoe, Zadie and Harrison.

And whenever he has a spare moment to reflect on his career, Orr said he rarely has any regrets.

“I feel very satisfied that I was given a great opportunity and did a great job, or at least the best I could, given my ability,” he said. “I worked with the most talented people in the business and learned something from all of them. I don’t take that lightly.”

White fondly recalls old days

By SCOTT GERFEN ThisWeekNEWS.com Longtime TV personality Chuck White is resolute in remaining young at heart.

Most days you’ll find him at the gym, staying fit, and he gives his mind a daily workout with constant reading and crossword puzzles. He also speaks French and Russian.

“Growing old is not in my vocabulary,” said White, who is best known for his time at WBNS-10TV, where he produced shows, anchored the news and served as the station’s director of community affairs for 30 years. “Basically, I want to do everything I can to keep healthy in this longevity that I’m experiencing.”

And, the 84-year-old wants to help others do the same.

The Worthington resident’s 50-year career at WBNS-TV sprouted from a conversation with his college roommate, Frederick Peerenboom, who is better known as Fritz the Nite Owl and was host for the “Nite Owl Theatre” at the station from 1974-91.

“He was working in the newsroom as a copy editor when he was drafted into the Army, and he said, ‘Chuck, why don’t you replace me at the station,’” White recalled.

“I said, ‘I don’t really want to go into television.’ Well, he talked me into it.”

White was one of Ohio’s first AfricanAmerican broadcasters, but viewers first became familiar with his voice on the 1960s children’s program, “Luci’s Toyshop,” which was hosted by Luci VanLeeuween and ran on the station from 1960 to 1972.

White served as puppeteer, co-producer and co-writer and also was the voice of the singing Mr. Tree, one of the show’s most beloved characters. Mr. Tree was 7-foot tall and slept most of the time. He could only be awakened with the “Mr. Tree song.”

“Whenever I do public speaking, and people find out that I was Mr. Tree, there’s this ‘ooh and aah’ you can hear all over the audience,” he said. “People remember the song, and they sing it.”

In his 50-year television career, Chuck White won three Emmy awards.

White was working in the film-editing department when he decided to audition for the show. Station program director John Haldi was so taken back with White’s ad-libbing and puppeteering that he was hired on the spot.

lessons with her puppet friends, Stanley Mouse, Wonder Witch, Dragon, Lamb and Pierre, which she designed and sewed.

White was the hand and voice behind the characters, except for Stanley Mouse.

Pierre was his favorite, he said.

VanLeeuween, who died in 2003, was best described as a female “Captain Kangaroo.”

At the same time, a show similar to

“Luci’s Toyshop” was being created in Pittsburgh — “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

“I loved doing that show, and I love bringing a little nostalgic humor to people who are growing older, but growing older gracefully,” White said.

Children always have been a focal point in White’s life. Not only has he raised three of his own, he also created the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon, which began in 1985.

“I think the first amount we raised was something like $300,000, and then we went on up into the millions literally,” White said.

According to 10TV, the telethon, which became the blueprint for other fundraisers, had received more than $10 million for the hospital by 2014.

White continued to make appearances on the telethon after retiring.

“I wanted to give back to this community because I enjoyed my years in television in this community,” White said. “That was my mother and father’s philosophy — always give back.”

Over the years, White also has been involved with Employment for Seniors Inc., which helps link those ages 50 and older with employment opportunities, American Cancer Society, Urban League and the central Ohio chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association for 20 years.

“My mother died of Alzheimer’s,” he said. “I know there’s some genetic link there, and I’m hoping I’m not going to get it. That’s why I keep myself mentally alert as constantly as possible.”

These days, White is taking a slower approach to life and enjoying what the world has to offer. He and his wife, Bernice, a retired nurse, are world travelers, having been to Iceland, Cuba and all over Europe.

However, he always enjoys getting in front of an audience.

“I’m looking forward to seeing people who grew up with me. … I hope I bring a little humor and a little light to the day,” White said. “With all the negative things we have going on today, we need a little bit of levity.”

Fisher answered early call before switching gears

By ANDREW KING ThisWeekNEWS.com As far back as third grade, Ann Fisher knew she wanted to be a print journalist.

“When I was growing up, radio was kind of not cool; it was TV, but I didn’t care about television either,” she said. “I wanted to be a newspaper reporter. Back in the olden days, nobody thought that newspapers would ever be endangered.

Every city had a couple. That’s just what I wanted to do and that was my big dream.”

More than 50 years later, Fisher is doing the “not cool” thing. She’s one of the most recognizable voices in Columbus radio thanks to her show, “All Sides with Ann Fisher.”

And despite not being a newspaper reporter anymore, Fisher, 61, thinks her third-grade self would be happy with the career she’s had.

“I think third-grade Ann would get it if she had all the facts,” she said with a laugh. “She’d feel really proud that I did pursue my dream and I achieved it. I did good.”

Pursuing her journalism degree at Michigan State University only reaffirmed Fisher’s desire to write for newspapers.

In one class, she had an “old radio guy” as a professor who she said didn’t like her because she was so obviously uninterested.

“I didn’t even want to be in the class,” she said. “I didn’t want to do any broadcast work.”

But by the end of the class, that professor was telling her she should get into radio. She still wasn’t buying it.

“In the end he said, ‘You might actually be good at this,’ ” she said. “I said, ‘Well, I’m never going to do it, so it doesn’t matter.’ ” For the first 30 years of her career, that sentiment seemed true.

Fisher started her career working for the Grand Rapids Press writing “everything but sports” before moving to the Toledo Blade for a nine-year stint covering state government. In 1998, she joined The Columbus Dispatch and worked a wide variety of jobs including coverage of Appalachia, writing editorials, editing and working as a columnist.

But in September of 2009, she realized she was ready for a change.

After some shuffling at the paper, she heard that Fred Andrle, who she saw as “sort of a legend,” was leaving his radio show and that WOSU was looking for someone to replace him.

She talked to a friend who told her she could get hired, and she took her shot at changing careers. Looking back on it 10 years later, Fisher said she wasn’t sure of the change even as she was going for it.

“I didn’t want to (move), but I was glad to have the opportunity,” she said. “It was a financial risk, and I still haven’t recouped it, but for all I know I’d be making less if I had stayed.”

The transition to radio was not an easy

one, and Fisher said it took her months to feel comfortable.

“The culture change and the technology was so foreign to me,” she said. “I think I was in a zombie mode for about six months, just not having the same daily deadline but also having more of a deadline than ever before called live radio.”

In her 50s after a wellestablished career, Fisher wasn’t just getting used to a new workplace and new colleagues, she was changing fields entirely.

“I didn’t just change companies; I changed technologies – that was a huge thing,” she said. “That was exhausting. But I’m glad I did it. I made the change, I took a huge pay cut and it was a big culture change for me, but I never regretted it. I think when you go into journalism, one of the enticements is learning something new all the time. I’ve got that in spades.”

Now, Fisher is as confident as ever that she made the right choice.

For others who are considering the idea of a career change in their 50s, Fisher said she would encourage others to pursue that growth.

“It was a risk,” she said. “But I don’t think it’s bad to take risks. If you’re calculated with them, they can make your

life more interesting and give you different paths didn’t know you had.”

And for some, like Fisher, taking that risk can mean a new and unexpected challenge and passion.

“At a time when people are sitting on their haunches or falling back, I got the chance to step up,” she said.

Ganahl has weathered an enjoyable career

By KEVIN CORVO ThisWeekNEWS.com Like many children, veteran central Ohio meteorologist Jym Ganahl wanted a day off from school and became frustrated when the promised snow did not accumulate in his hometown near Waterloo, Iowa.

“I was 12 years old, and I would get mad at the TV weather guy (from the station in Waterloo) for not getting it right,” said Ganahl, 70.

Ganahl is a familiar face in central Ohio as he continues in his fifth decade of keeping viewers informed about weather and occasionally sharing anecdotes such as his Iowa childhood.

“But I always want to know about the people I meet,” said Ganahl, who still follows the advice of his father to avoid speaking about himself.

Ganahl acknowledged that while viewers often ask him about things he’s shared on air he always strives to direct the conversations back toward them.

Ganahl is the on-air meteorologist for WSYX-TV Channel 6 for the noon broadcast with Terri Sullivan.

“Terri is great to work with; we have a great rapport,” Ganahl said.

But he is also known to many native central Ohioans for his time as the evening meteorologist for WCHM-TV Channel 4, from 1979 to 2016, often interrupting primetime broadcasts to report on tornado threats and other dangerous weather that typically occur in the late evening.

Ganahl also was the on-air meteorologist on WNCI 97.9-FM for 40 years while at NBC; today he is does the same for WTVN 610-AM and WCOL 92.3-FM. His first turn on air came at another NBC affiliate, KWWL-TV in Waterloo, where Ganahl was hired weeks after graduating from high school in 1966.

“I walked into the TV station (in Waterloo) and told them I could do a better job than who they had,” Ganahl said.

By fate, that weatherman already was leaving the station, providing Ganahl with an opportunity.

“They liked the idea of a 17-year-old kid and gave me a try.”

During his time at the Waterloo station, Ganahl also served in the U.S. Army.

After Ganahl’s enlistment, the Army learned he had a college degree in meteorology and assigned him to a helicopter unit where he gave weather briefings to pilots, a job he continued with the Iowa National Guard until

1976. In the era before hospitals had MedFlight, the Iowa National Guard would transport those critically injured to hospitals.

As many viewers know, Ganahl loves snow.

“I love winter,” both for the beauty of snow and ice, Ganahl said, but also because it is less hectic to report on snow systems than fast-developing summer storms.

However, it was an iconic winter storm — the blizzard of 1978 — that played a role in Ganahl’s arrival in Columbus.

He was interviewing for a job as Chicago’s WGN-TV when a colleague in Detroit recommended him for the job in Columbus at NBC-4. “(Columbus) had just had back-to-back hard winters, and I was from upper Midwest; they wanted someone from cold-weather climate that really understood these blizzards,” Ganahl said.

After coming to NBC-4, Ganahl become connected to the community in other ways.

He taught science at St. Agatha School in Upper Arlington and also for a gifted program taught in summer at Ohio Wesleyan.

Ganahl also performed in the cast of Tecumseh, an outdoor drama in Chillicothe, and for Shadowbox Live, a comedic troupe.

In September 2016, he retired from WCMH-4 but said he felt “lost” and within a year began exploring options which led to his hire at WSYX-6 in October 2017.

Inviting Ganahl back on air was “a no-brainer,” said Jamie Justice, news director for WSYX-6.

“I had an opening for a meteorologist, and Jym was the first person to come to my mind. He is a legend in Columbus so I picked up the phone and called him,” Justice said.

“He told me he wasn’t ready to retire, and I told him I wanted him to be a part of my team.”

“I felt lost like many do when retiring and that I had lost my purpose. Thanks to Jamie for finding me,” Ganahl said.

FEATURED PERFORMERS

Vaud-Villities has lasting talent

By KEVIN CORVO ThisWeekNEWS.com You’re never too old — or too young — to perform with Vaud-Villities.

The Broadway style variety show is the longest continuously running variety show of its kind in the United States, having performed as a nonprofit arts organization in central Ohio for the past 77 years, said Steve Darke, former cast president and current marketing co-chairperson.

Vaud-Villities will perform at each of the Young at Heart Festival events, July 18 in Westerville and July 25 in Hilliard.

“This is the third year we have performed for a Young at Heart audience and we are excited to do so (again),” Darke said.

Performing at each Young at Heart Festival event is VOCALities, a traveling vocal performance group made up of Vaud-Villities cast members that performs throughout central Ohio in support of Vaud-Villities community outreach and engagement mission. The VOCALities group sings a mixture of choral oldies and current music.

What sets Vaud-Villities apart from other variety performers “is the quality of our home-grown singing and dancing talent, the family-oriented entertainment and the inclusive cast environment,” Darke said.

The current cast of Vaud-Villities is

about 100 people ranging in age from 5 to over 80, said Karen Miller, marketing cochairperson for Vaud-Villities.

Some cast members have been performing with the group for more than 50 years, Miller said.

The story of Vaud-Villities began in 1943 when 27 vocalists from Lowell Riley’s First Community Church men’s glee club resolved they wanted to share their performances to larger audiences.

Lowell arranged for the group to perform on stage at Upper Arlington High School, and the performance was so well-received that encores extended past midnight as the story goes, Darke said.

Building on the success of the group, Lowell added the church’s Cloister Choir of high school girls and an orchestra of local musicians, Darke said.

By 1947, the cast had grown to more than 200, Darke said.

Ten years later, a women’s glee club was added and a growing number of alumni from the Cloister Choir returned to perform, Darke said.

The cast continued to swell, and the venue was changed to Veterans Memorial Auditorium in time for the 20th anniversary of Vaud-Villities in 1962.

Arts Center welcomed the troupe as its new home.

Vaud-Villities’ season consists of four major events: a spring show which is a traditional two-act performance, a summer kids’ camp that teaches children about theater and performing, a summer cabaretstyle performance and a holiday production to end the year.

Vaud-Villities next full stage production is “Finding Christmas,” featuring creative director Cabot Rea, from Dec. 6- 8.

Vaud-Villities also is always seeking additional talent and have open auditions each January and September. The next audition is Sept. 25.

Bob Orr spent more than four decades in broadcasting before retiring in February 2015 from CBS News in Washington. On his way up, Bob spent 12 years in Columbus as a reporter then anchor with WBNS 10TV, where he helped Ohio authorities and negotiators end the deadly siege at the Lucasville Correctional facility. Shortly after the prison riot, Bob joined CBS News, covering the transportation beat and serving as the network’s Justice and Homeland Security correspondent. Orr led all CBS coverage of international and domestic terror plots and major law enforcement events. He was a primary contributor to special event broadcasts of momentous stories including the 2013 bombings of the Boston Marathon, the 2011 death of Osama bin Laden, and the 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Orr is the recipient of four national Emmy awards, three regional Emmy awards and the 2014 Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Silver Baton.

Jerry Revish delivers the nightly news to Columbus viewers as anchor of the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. editions of 10TV News. He has been an award-winning reporter for WBNS-TV since June 1980. Jerry has also been inducted in the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

He’s especially drawn to the quirks that make Columbus what it is, people with a passion they can’t stop talking about, and recording the milestones in his family’s life. Sometimes he spouts off on the big issues of the day, but more often he looks for the little things that others might not notice.

At age 12 I was irritated with TV forecasters missing the weather for snow days at school, so I studied why that was happening. At age 17, before starting college, I walked into a TV station in Iowa and told them I could do this job better. They hired me for 6 nights a week during my college years at the University of Northern Iowa and now 52 years later - yep 52 years - I love being able to continue my hobby, not a job, with WSYX/FOX28.

I actually retired on my 50th anniversary of doing weather but was so bored and depressed for the year after I just knew I had to do it again. Almost 70, I still feel 17 bringing weather folklore and knowledge to everyone.

I also was in the Army after college and was named the Most Outstanding Scout and #1 Marksman with an M-16 rifle, received the Spirit and Honor Medal, and then was placed as flight operations with a helicopter unit with the National Guard. In 2009 I was inducted into the Associated Press Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

In the 1980s, I taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science and math at St Agatha School in Upper Arlington, then taught 9 summers with the OWjL program at Ohio Wesleyan University.

I love theater and spent 19 summers acting in the outdoor drama TECUMSEH, and am currently with the comedy rock and roll theater Shadowbox Live where I have been in 22 shows.

Steve Stephens, scheduled to appear at the Hilliard Young at Heart event, has been a Dispatch reporter for almost 35 years, covering everything from crime to politics to the Ohio State Fair.

He has been the Dispatch travel writer since 2004 and is now also the Dispatch home section reporter.

He is married to Dispatch garden writer Diana Lockwood. They have four children ages 13 to 30.

He also plays the ukulele, but won’t be bringing it with him, so don’t ask.

Parker delivers for those who need it most

By KEVIN CORVO ThisWeekNEWS.com The 2001 Nissan Frontier with 160,000 miles on its odometer illustrates as well as anything else the commitment of 82-year-old Shelly Parker to others in times of need.

For his efforts, the Gahanna resident was named Senior of the Year and will be honored July 25 at the Makoy Center in Hilliard during the Young at Heart festival, which is sponsored by The Columbus Dispatch and ThisWeek Community News.

Shelly and his wife, Miranda, coordinate and operate the food pantry at the East Side Grace Brethren Church in Blacklick. “We’re simply compelled to do it,� said Miranda, 67.

She said the couple’s faith has led them to do “what we are supposed to do.�

The Parkers, who have been married 23 years, began attending East Side Grace Brethren Church in 2015 and started to volunteer by distributing small bags of food the parishioners had collected.

Miranda keeps the pantry’s weekly schedule and distributions.

As the demand for services increased, more volunteer time was required and the Parkers obliged.

The church became an agency of the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, opening more resources and allowing it to accommodate the increasing number of people depending on its services. “I’m the coordinator, but Shelly is the brains and does all of the grunt work,� Miranda said.

That “grunt work� includes driving his truck from their home to a former Kroger warehouse in Grove City to load fresh produce and deliver it to the food pantry.

SENIOR OF THE YEAR Continued from previous page Every Monday, Shelly loads and unloads fresh fruit and vegetables that are distributed that day at the food pantry.

For example, on June 24, he picked up more than 2,400 pounds of fruit and vegetables.

Until a month ago when another volunteer started, Shelly did this on his own. His truck could carry 1,000 pounds; Miranda’s vehicle could hold another 500 pounds.

A U.S. Air Force veteran and the oldest of seven siblings, Shelly returns to the warehouse each Tuesday to pick up canned goods and packages, such as dry cereal, and delivers them for distribution on Thursdays.

“Move and transport; move and transport,� is how Shelly describes his days, adding that he is pleased to work alongside his wife and help those in need.

One week in June, the pantry served 142 families and 664 individuals. “Shelly is 82; he should have his feet up but he just can’t do that,� Miranda said.

A South Carolina native and retired industrial engineer who came to central Ohio in 1979 and has not lost his native accent, Shelly finds more ways to help others. “He’ll take a lawn mower someone is throwing away, fix it and give it to someone who needs one,� Miranda said. “He has always been so kind and generous,� said Marianne Langley, Shelly’s sister. “And he does all this, almost all the time, by himself.�

First runner-up: Jackie Stevens Jackie has been a volunteer at The Salvation Army in central Ohio since 2008. She began in the Christmas Cheer program, then became involved in the Material Assistance Program. Jackie spends about 20 hours per week in the pantry and social services department.

Second runner-up: Jim Caronis Jim is the founder and president of Operation Buckeye. Since its founding in 2005, Operation Buckeye has sent almost 50,000 care packages to service personnel deployed throughout the world. He also has volunteered in other capacities throughout central Ohio.
