ThisWeek Community News welcomes the public to attend the annual Young at Heart Festival, on Thursday, July 19 from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. at the Villa Milano, located at 1630 Schrock Rd., Columbus, OH 43229. The festival is perfect for boomers and seniors who lead active lives. Admission is free, parking is free and the event is open to the public.

This year’s festival is packed a chance to meet local celebrities, have some fun, join in healthy activities, talk with experts, gather resources and win some fun prizes. Attendees can meet, talk and grab a coffee with Dispatch reporters Tim May, Joe Blundo and Ted Decker, plus meet Columbus’ favorite weatherman, Jym Ganahl (check schedule for times).

There will be non-stop programs and entertainment on the Eldorado Scioto Downs Main Stage including dancing demo by Fred Astaire Dance Studios, Silver Sneakers, Seniors Got Talent competition, a Tai Chi demo courtesy of Ohio Living that attendees can join in, and presentations on good ideas about when and how to downsize your home and the early days of local TV by Chuck White including stories about Luci’s Toyshop.

Senior of the Year

Sams honored for service to others

By ANDREW KING ThisWeekNews.com Carol Ventresca is very aware that many people assume seniors and computers don’t mix. And for her, that assumption couldn’t be further from the truth.

As the executive director of Employment for Seniors, 4300 E Broad St., Columbus, Ventresca said “everything about our program revolves around the computer system,� and finds it frustrating when people are dismissive of seniors involved with technology. “When employers tell me older adults and seniors can’t do things involving computers, my first response is, ‘I gave out 5,000 job referrals last year, all via computers,’� she said.

And for Ventresca and the plethora of others who have been affected by his work, Gary Sams is the perfect example of the impact a senior can have when they harness the power of technology.

For his contributions, the Westerville resident was named Senior of the Year and will be honored at the Young at Heart event, sponsored by The Columbus Dispatch and ThisWeek Community News, on July 19 at Villa Milano, 1630 Schrock Road.

Sams, 78, is a retired electrical engineer who worked for AEP for 40 years. He said he “grew up� alongside computers, and has been fascinated by them since “their early inception.� “My career was in engineering,� he said, “but my passion on the side was working with computers.�

When he retired from AEP, Sams began a private consulting firm, helping clients – mainly other seniors and small businesses – operate and learn to use their computers.

After 17 years, Sams’ client list has expanded far beyond individuals and small businesses. He now serves as the network administrator for Employment for Seniors, works with the Westerville Area Resource Ministry and handles technology at his church, Bethel International United Methodist.

Despite the major impact he has, Sams isn’t paid at any of his three main positions. He serves on a volunteer basis and said he simply likes helping and learning. “I like helping people in whatever capacity,� he said. “So this is just a way to be of help to people.�

And for those organizations, Ventresca said, Sams’ work is invaluable. “We couldn’t afford ‌ to pay someone to do all the work he’s doing,â€? she said. “He makes sure that that computer system is the resource we need without impinging on our services and also mentors us in our roles so that we can be more efficient and be more effective. He’s not forcing anything down our throat. He’s teaching us gently.â€?

That gentle teaching method has become a hallmark of Sams’ work and is largely a product of how much he enjoys what he does.

Even with his long-time clients from his consulting business, Sams said he only charges a “nominal fee,� and largely does the work “for the fun and occupation of it.�

“But I don’t want people to feel like they’re a charity case by my working for nothing,� he said.

Sams said he doesn’t see what he does as a job.

White’s impact on community is long-lasting

For Angela Pace, a long-time anchor who took over as Director of Community Affairs, White’s influence outside the telethon was even greater. In her youth, she said she saw White – one of the few black men she could remember seeing on television – on her local channel and was inspired.

“I remember seeing a man of color singing and playing guitar on TV,” she said. “I was struck right there.”

It wasn’t until later when she realized that he also was Mr. Tree, who she said she remembered well.

“There are grown people who can still sing the Mr. Tree wake-up song,” she said with a laugh. “There are those of us who are of a certain age range who grew up watching him. Years later, I found out he was Mr. Tree and several of the puppets on Luci’s Toyshop.”

Pace said it was a bit intimidating to step into White’s shoes when he retired.

She called him “instrumental” in many of 10TV’s long-term projects, and said people are often confused when she tells them she’s in his role now.

“He really has had a lasting impact on at least the non-profit world here in Columbus.”

White, 83, still is involved in the community and will be one of the speakers at the Young at Heart event July 19 at Villa Milano, 1630 Schrock Road. His newest love is traveling the world with his wife, Bernice, a retired registered nurse.

The couple recently traveled to Iceland, Cuba and all over Europe, and White said there are no plans of stopping any time soon, with trips to China and other places in the works.

“I don’t want to get old, but I know Mother Nature says, ‘Yes, you’re going to get old,’” he said. “I’m pretty much young at heart. I go to the gym every day, and I

try to do things that keep myself young.

I read constantly. I work puzzles. I speak Russian and French. I try to keep my mind occupied and do everything I can to keep myself young.”

Pace and White know each other well now, and Pace said White will go “drink for drink, story for story” with anyone of any age. People are often surprised, she said, when they find out his age.

But for her and others who know him well, Pace said White’s age is nothing but encouraging.

“He exemplifies what I think going into your golden years should be like – still having the energy, the curiosity, the willingness to embrace a lot of different people and ideas and philosophies and experiences,” she said. “I want to be Chuck White when I grow up.”

During his long and extremely visible career as a TV personality, administrator and creative mind, Chuck White has taken the phrase “young at heart” as a personal calling.

White is best known for his time at WBNS-10TV, where he served in just about every role at the station, including time at the news anchor desk, producing shows and serving as the station’s Director of Community Affairs for 30 years.

Perhaps his most well-known contribution, however, was to the show Luci’s Toyshop, a children’s program where White served as puppeteer, coproducer and co-writer. Among his many tasks on the show, he served as the voice of the singing Mr. Tree, one of the show’s most beloved characters.

“I was a news anchor, but I think most people remember me as Mr. Tree,” White said with a laugh. “He was a wise old tree who would give the weather and the temperature. He would also make wise comments that the children would follow. … Everyone remembers the song, ‘Hi there, Mr. Tree. Wake up, Mr. Tree.’”

And while he spent plenty of time making children smile on television, he spent even more time fighting for them behind the scenes.

While working in public affairs for 10TV, White was handed the task of creating the first Children’s Miracle Network Telethon, which began in 1985 and still is running today.

The model White developed was a success. He said it raised about $500,000 for Nationwide Children’s Hospital in its first year and became the blueprint for other fundraisers.

“We created a telethon that was used as a model of telethons across the country,” he said. “The other stations modeled theirs after ours.”

Despite retiring from 10TV in 2008, White still “makes an appearance” at the telethons. He said he’s as proud of that project as anything and is thrilled to have made an impact on the lives of so many children.

According to 10TV, the telethon had raised more than $10 million for the hospital by 2014.

“I have children of my own, and it’s important, I think,” White said. “When you have a child that goes into a hospital, you can’t help but have heart for a child.

Joe has been at the Columbus Dispatch since 1978 in a variety of roles. He currently lives in Worthington with his wife, Deborah. They have two children.

Ted Decker: 11:30am-12:30pm Ted Decker has been the Dispatch Metro & State columnist for two years. Before that he spent 10 years racing to crime scenes while covering police for the paper.

He has worked for newspapers in Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts, where as a college intern in Gloucester he helped with coverage what is now known as “The Perfect Storm.�

He lives on the Far East Side with his wife, two children, and neurotic Bassett/ beagle mix. He also owns far too many orchids.

Jym Ganahl: 9am-10:30am

At age 12 I was irritated with TV forecasters missing the weather for snow days at school, so I studied why that was happening. At age 17, before starting college, I walked into a TV station in Iowa and told them I could do this job better. They hired me for 6 nights a week during my college years at the University of Northern Iowa and now 52 years later - yep 52 years - I love being able to continue my hobby, not a job, with WSYX/FOX28.

I actually retired on my 50th anniversary of doing weather but was so bored and depressed for the year after I just knew I had to do it again. Almost 70, I still feel 17 bringing weather folklore and knowledge to everyone.

I also was in the Army after college and was named the Most Outstanding Scout and #1 Marksman with an M-16 rifle, received the Spirit and Honor Medal, and then was placed as flight operations with a helicopter unit with the National Guard.

In 2009 I was inducted into the Associated Press Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

I love theater and spent 19 summers acting in the outdoor drama TECUMSEH, and am currently with the comedy rock and roll theater Shadowbox Live where I have been in 22 shows.

Tim May: 9:30-10:30am

Tim May has worked for The Columbus Dispatch since the fall of 1976. During his tenure at the paper he has covered high school, small college and medium college sports, and the Browns and Bengals from 1979-83. But he is most noted for his coverage of Ohio State football, which began in 1984.

Tim also has covered boxing (including Buster Douglas’ knockout of Mike Tyson in Tokyo), auto racing (including Bobby Rahal’s Indy 500 win in 1986), golf and even some major league baseball, among other assignments.

He has won several awards, including national beat writer of the year by the Football Writers Association of America in 2014 and the Ohio Sportswriter of the Year for 2017 by the National Sports Media Association.

He and his wife, Suzy, have raised two boys and a girl, several horses, dogs and even rabbits for a while on the place he calls Too Few Acres west of Hilliard.

Eric is a Vietnam vet serving from 1969-1970 and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantry Badge for his bravery. For over 40 years he has taken care of the Violet Cemetery in Pickerington. He pours the footers for military markers for veterans at no cost. “It’s kind of halfway between a business and a hobby,” he said.

But the satisfaction Sams gets from his work motivates him as well. He said he enjoys the “overall sense of accomplishment” he gets from the jobs, and enjoys seeing them through.

He also enjoys being able to look back on the progress both he and his clients have made. Sams remembers where his three major organizations were when he began and laughed as he recalled taking them “from the primitive to the advanced.”

“When I first started with them, I think all three of them had one computer with a dial-up connection through the phone line to an AOL account,” he said. “So I’ve helped them evolve from that to now, where you have network and servers and multiple computers and internet and all that.”

Along the way, Sams could be overbearing and get frustrated with his clients. But Ventresca said she’s never seen him “put the hammer down.”

Instead, she said, Sams is “one of the most wonderful people you could ever meet” and is the type to be

kind and helpful while he does his work.

“What I love about him most of all, from the first day I met him, is that he’s the kind of technical expert who wants to make sure you know what you’re doing with the computer system,” she said. “(He helps) you understand it and you know he’s there to be a resource.”

As a fellow senior, Sams said he knows he’s “able to relate with the older people” better than others in the field of technology and said he strives to make them comfortable.

“I have a number of individuals that I help out when they need help with their computers, and a lot of them are also retired people,” he said. “I have the advantage, I guess, that I tend not to talk over their heads like some of the younger guys might do.

“I tell people that, to me, what I do is more of a hobby than a business.

A lot of people put a lot of money into their hobbies.

People pay me for mine.”

While he loves to travel with his wife, Nancy – the couple just returned from a cruise – Sams said he still enjoys his work as much as anything.

He said he loves to “learn new things” and sees his technology career as the best way to “stave off seniority.”

And as the computers he works with continue to change, Sams said he’ll be sticking right with them, as he’s done since he was young.

“The technology is always advancing,” he said.

Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.

The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association.

Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain.

It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.

Exercise Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.

The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.

Quit smoking The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.

Eat healthy foods Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain.

These include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.

Consume caffeine Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-

being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.

In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.

Work the brain Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.

A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.

Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.
