Former UA teacher receives ‘Young at Heart’ award By NATE ELLIS Helping comfort guests at a local hospital, providing meals to those who can’t venture out and sewing clothes for newborns are among the many activities that earned a retired Upper Arlington teacher the Young at Heart Senior of the Year award. For more than three decades, including 29 in the Upper Arlington school district, Carole Listiak helped develop young minds as a first-grade teacher. She retired in 1997, but by no means did she step away from her personal call to serve others. Listiak has volunteered to provide services to a variety of people and organizations on a nearly full-time basis. She was nominated for this year’s Young at Heart award presented by Resort Lifestyle Communities Stone Oak, by Dori McWherter, who works with Listiak at the American Cancer Society’s Discovery Shop in the Kenny Centre Mall in Columbus. AWARD Continued from page 2 furniture, home décor and other items that are resold to support the American Cancer Society. “Carole is a retired first-grade teacher,” McWherter wrote in her nomination letter. “Amazingly, she still keeps up with many of her former students. “Carole is such an energetic, caring person. I believe she exemplifies the ‘young at heart’ senior you are looking to honor.” McWherter noted that Listiak’s activities include yoga two evenings a week and nightly walks outside or on a treadmill. The nomination also pointed to Listiak’s volunteer work on Mondays at Riverside Methodist Hospital, where she delivers The Columbus Dispatch to patients and takes the “cookie cart” around to guests waiting for family or friends at the hospital. Additionally, McWherter said Listiak delivers food for Meals on Wheels and sews onesies and other clothing for newborns through the Touching Little Lives organization and for Nationwide Children’s
Hospital. This year’s award winner also is known as a dog-lover who owns rescue dogs and provides monogrammed towels for friends’ dogs. “I like volunteering and I like to meet with different people,” Listiak said, acknowledging moderate embarrassment from talking about herself. “I feel like I’m doing a service and I enjoy providing the service.” Listiak said she’s been volunteering at Riverside since 2006. She chose that hospital, she said, primarily because it’s her “neighborhood hospital.” Likewise, her Meals on Wheels service covers about 10 miles in neighboring Grandview Heights, and the Discovery Shop is just outside Upper Arlington. “Being a teacher, I had not done anything in the retail world since high school,” she said. “I thought that was a way I could serve and do something a little different.” Listiak, who politely declined the opportunity to share her age, said she became involved with Touching Little Lives and providing clothing to newborns at Nationwide Children’s because she believes in the cause. Those ventures also were opportunities to put one of her hobbies to good

use. “When I’m home, I sew,” she said, noting there are “dozens” of others who join her in delivering handmade items to babies at Riverside, Ohio State University Medical Center and St. Stephens Community Health Center in Columbus. While she enjoys the many thank-you notes she receives for the sewing donations, Listiak said recognition is the last thing on her mind. “I never think about that,” she said. “I just do it. When you get the thank-you notes, you know it reaches people.” Over the past year, Listiak and other volunteers worked diligently to fill a request from OSU Medical Center to sew scarlet and gray items, and she spent a number of hours baking desserts to support a bazaar at Children’s. She said she continues to take on new projects because she likes to help others, but she also feels
fortunate to be able to live an active lifestyle. “I like to be active,” she said. “I work out at the gym and I do yoga. I have a home and a yard I keep and I spend time walking my dogs. “I don’t know why. I just think the longer you live, you see things go on and you appreciate what you’re able to do.” Listiak said she will continue her volunteer service and her recreational activities for as long as she’s physically able. She added that she was “totally surprised” to receive this year’s Young at Heart award, but rather than basking in accolades, she hopes the recognition will inspire others to give of themselves. “There are a lot of volunteer opportunities out there,” she said. “I think anyone who chooses to would be able to find something to volunteer in that interests them.” nellis@thisweeknews.com

Considerations for adopting a dog as a pet Pets often make ideal companions. They are around when a person needs support, they can provide protection for those living alone, they’re always willing to lend an ear to problems, and many tend to offer unconditional love. Seniors facing an empty nest or the loss of a spouse may find pets can buoy their spirits. Studies have shown that seniors can benefit both mentally and physically from having a pet around.
Pets can alleviate anxiety, depression and boredom. While pets can provide comfort and companionship, they remain a significant responsibility. Seniors should find an animal that will fit in with their lifestyles. This is an important consideration for those seniors who travel frequently or have mobility issues. Those seniors who have decided that a dog will be the best fit can choose
among several breeds that may be a good match for their needs. When selecting a dog, consider both size and temperament. Smaller dogs tend to be easier to handle and will need less maintenance. They are easily carried and won’t take as long to bathe and groom. Smaller dogs also consume less food than larger breeds, reducing the expense of dog food and the hassle of wrangling large, heavy bags of chow.
