Entertainment preview for the 42nd Annual Westerville Area Chamber Music & Arts Festival The Westerville Area Chamber is excited to showcase an electrifying lineup of musicians at this year’s festival. Our entertainers travel from throughout central Ohio to bring you tunes to keep your toes tapping and hands clapping all weekend long. The Heartland Bank stage, located in front of the Everal Barn, will showcase the following performances.
Rory Block performance will benefit the Westerville Scholarship Foundation— Get your tickets today! Heralded as “a living landmark” (Berkeley Express), “a national treasure” (Guitar Extra), and “one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists” (Blues Revue), Rory Block has committed her life and her career to preserving the Delta blues tradition and bringing it to life for 21st century audiences around the world. A traditionalist and an innovator at the same time, she wields a fiery and haunting guitar and vocal style that redefines the boundaries of acoustic blues and folk. The New York Times declared: “Her playing is perfect, her singing otherworldly as she wrestles with ghosts, shadows and legends.” Rory’s performance is $25 for general admission and tickets can be purchased at WestervilleChamber.com. Tickets benefit the Westerville Scholarship Foundation. Ticket holders will have a special meet and greet to follow the performance. Sponsored by Garber Connect and Henry Painting. Matthew Keeler and His Auspicious Gentlemen Matthew likes to shout the blues! He’d prefer a barbeque to a concert hall. He mostly plays Depression-era country blues and spirtuals, but does write a lot of his own stuff. Matthew tries to not get pidgeon-holed. For example, he’s been learning to play a bunch of folk dance tunes on pennywhistle and hurdy gurdy lately. Nothing flashy, just solid songs, song writing, and two feet shoved way down deep in tradition. Sponsored by TWC Pharmacy and Wellness Center, LLC.
Sarah Overdier Sarah Overdier began writing songs at age 14. She’s opened for multiple national acts such as Willie Nelson, The Steeldrivers, Donna The Buffalo and was invited to sing at the White House in 2001. In 2011 she was a top finalist in the John Lennon National Songwriting Competition, and awarded Ohio’s Best Young Artist by the Ohio Arts Presenter’s Network. A Michigan native, she emotes a folk-pop style that has obvious influences from the rural north country, and her new home, Columbus, Ohio. In addition to her solo pursuits, she also tours regionally with Columbus based all-female band, The Salty Caramels
The Salty Caramels On a clear night in the fall of 2012, four sultry women joined forces to create a sound never before heard in Columbus. The Salty Caramels were born with a sound so sweet and salty which would soon inspire audiences of all ages. Based in central Ohio, Molly Winters introduced Alabama native Paige Strickling to local musicians Sarah Overdier and Emily Ng. You can expect to hear a variety of instruments ranging from classic guitar, and fiddle to quirky suitcase drums and kazoos. As a collaborating four-piece, The Salty Caramels write original songs and play toe-tapping, nostalgic covers for an exciting and unique set. Over the past year, these four ladies have not only perfected their songs and sound, but also the full performance. Expect to enjoy great music, fun outfits and witty banter. With plans to take the music scene by storm, get ready to see The Salty Caramels. Sponsored by TWC Pharmacy and Wellness Center, LLC.
The Morgan After The Morgan After is a group of music lovers who get together once or twice a week in Westerville to play the music they enjoy. Much of which falls into the general categories of pop, rock, blues and folk, with occasional forays into jazz and cowboy music. Instrumentation includes a gallery of guitarists, one or more bopping banjos, a fantastic flute, dynamic drums and a hopefully harmonious harmonica. At past festivals they have featured songs by the Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, Jimmy Cliff, Neil Young, as well as several original compositions. What will be on the set list this year? Only one way to find out. See you at the Westerville Area Chamber Music & Arts Festival. For videos and more information visit www.morganmusictherapy.com.
Plaid Brixx Plaid Brixx is a pop-rock band from New Albany, Ohio. The band was formed in 2014 by Chris Duggan, frontman, songwriter and lead guitarist. The other performers are Mark Smith on drums, Cole Bradley on bass and Jared Sawaya on keyboard. Described as pop with a razor’s edge of rock and an aftershave of punk, their debut EP, Chemistry, was nominated as one of the Best Rock EPs of 2014 by the Annual Independent Music Awards. Duggan penned and produced all five songs on the album. Plaid Brixx continues to perform regionally and also played at CMJ in NYC in late 2014 and at SXSW earlier this year. Buzzfeed had this to say about their CMJ event: “There are 1,200 bands playing in every venue NYC has to offer ... and I’ve picked 37 that have me the most excited”—as featured in Buzzfeed: “CMJ A-Z: 37 Bands You Need To See.” Sponsored by Roush Honda.
The Select Phaze The Select Phaze is a classic/oldies band from Westerville. Members include Eddy Obbish on guitar, keyboard, harmonica and vocals, Ed Obbish on drums and vocals and Bill Obbish on
bass guitar. The music they play appeals to many generations. They have been performing at various festivals, clubs and campgrounds in central Ohio for the past several years. Sponsored by Village at Westerville Retirement & Assisted Living Center.
Jemntonic Isn’t it ironic? No it’s Jemntonic! Jemntonic “Pretty Front Porch Punk Folk Jam” originating in 2013 is an all-girl collaboration between Jessijem (guitar/accordion/vocals), Tonic Tori (standup bass, harmonies) plus lead viola percussion player the “N” Yoko. Since the band formed they have been working on creating catchy tunes with fun instrumentation and and harmonies. A poppy upbeat satirical take on most songs, while diving into meaningful folk jams on real life and love and struggle. Eloquently displayed passion and soul Jemntonic entertains crowds of all walks and ages. The Broadstreet Lineup Each member is a seasoned multitalented and multi-instrumental performer with years of experience and with well-respected resumes. They provide a memorable performance and give a fresh voice to the once-heard. A new movement to the once-danced sounds of old skool funk, jazz and the groove era. When you come to their show you will hear songs not heard on the radio; not seen on television nor typed into Google. You will feel and hear the voice of love, protest, war, freedom and lack of it. Come and feel the groove move your feet into doing the Funky Fast Bump with The Broadstreet Lineup! Erika Hughes & the Well Mannered Erika Hughes & The Well Mannered help define what “Americana” music is. Their sound is a distinctive combination of rock, country, blues and bluegrass that delightfully appeals to the senses. You can’t help dancing or tapping a toe to this gritty, foot-stomping sound. Erika’s original songs are filled with tales of broken hearts, adventure, life’s struggles and dreams. Her soulful voice brings life to her stories. Erika Hughes & The Well Mannered have been touring around Ohio and parts of the Midwest since 2012.
