Parks tax extension rolls to win Major extension of bike path system, big addition to Community Center and more now on tap
By ANDREW KING THISWEEKNEWS.COM Westerville voters overwhelmingly approved Issue 24 Tuesday, Nov. 4, extending the cityâs PROS tax for parks for another 20 years. The âyesâ vote on Issue 24 renews the cityâs 0.25-percent income tax dedicated to funding parks and recreation facilities and maintenance, and sets the table for tens of millions of dollars in new facilities to be built over the next 25 years. For Westerville Parks and Recreation Director Randy Auler, the extension comes as a vote of confidence as well as an ability
to move forward. âI think itâs a testament to the work that council and staff have done over the years,â he said. âWe engage the community in everything we do, and they have ownership that way.â Now, he says, the department will be able to plan further ahead than in the past. âThe key to everything we do in Westerville is engaging the community in the process and doing effective planning,â he said. âThis gives us the tool to do the planning.â Councilwoman Kathy Cocuzzi said she was ecstatic about the vote outcome.
Gathered at Jimmy Vâs Grill and Pub in Uptown, city officials declared victory for Issue 24 before 10 p.m. âIâm very grateful to the city of Westerville for showing their support for our excellent parks system,â Cocuzzi said. âWeâre truly âa city within a park,â and our residents understand that.â The wide margin of victory, she said, was to be expected. According to final, unofficial vote results from the Franklin and Delaware counties boards of election, the issue won 60.2 to 39.8 percent in Franklin County portions of the city, and 66.3 percent to 33.7 percent in the Delaware

County portions. âIâm not surprised because our citizens truly get it,â Cocuzzi said. âWe engaged with them from the very beginning with the master plan and asking their opinion of what we need to do in the future. They all understood that and turned out today in support.â Like Cocuzzi, Auler said the vote speaks volumes of the communityâs support of the parks and recreation department. âThe city understands the value of parks system and where the future lies in terms of meeting their needs, and they came out to
