Blendon razes blighted home at gateway corner By JENNIFER NESBITT THISWEEKNEWS.COM

Considered a gateway to Blendon Township, the heavily traveled corner of state Route 161 and Buenos Aires Boulevard has been the focus of recent township improvements, with Ohio Department of Transportation grants being used to spruce up the area. The northeast corner remained an eyesore, however. The house there burned in a fire years ago and the rental company that owned it left it vacant and deteriorating, said Township Administrator Bryan Rhoads. When the rental company changed hands recently, the new owners began working with the township on its blighted properties, and possibilities arose for the property, Rhoads said. The property owner sold the quarter-acre parcel at 3636 Harbin Drive to the township for $5,000. The township demolished the house on the parcel last week. For the fall, the township will seed the vacant lot with grass, Rhoads said, but township officials have a greater vision for the property. “That intersection right there is a major gateway to our neighborhood, to Blendon,” Rhoads said. “This is another corner of that intersection that we could do extra landscaping.” Rhoads said township officials are working with architects now to develop an entry feature of a small “pocket” park on the property. Regardless of what happens to the site, Rhoads said he’s already feeling better about the highvisibility corner. A crew from American Demolition tears down this burned-out home at the corner of Buenos Aires Boulevard and state Route 161 on Sept. 24. Blendon Township officials hope to establish a small “pocket park” on the high-visibility corner. BLENDON >> A2 LORRIE CECIL/THISWEEKNEWS

Incumbents laud their City Council accomplishments

By JENNIFER NESBITT THISWEEKNEWS.COM

The four Westerville City Council incumbents cited the city’s accomplishments as evidence they should be re-elected during a candidates’ forum hosted by the Westerville Area Chamber of Commerce Monday, Sept. 30. Kathy Cocuzzi, Mike Heyeck, Jenifer French and Larry Jenkins touted the city’s services, economic-development efforts, infrastructure improvements and fiscal responsibilities as reasons they should continue in their posts.

Meanwhile, challenger Doug Rankin said he offered an alternative, pledging to fight the “external units” that inhibit government from the local level up. Asked what three things they would change about Westerville, all the candidates said Westerville already is a great place to live. Cocuzzi said she would make people more cooperative when dealing with controversial issues and more respectful of others’ opinions. “Sometimes in the past, we’ve had people take things personally against people when they’ve disagreed with

them,” Cocuzzi said. French she would make people more willing to contact the city when issues arise, because the city’s staff is Kathy Cocuzzi quick to resolve problems. “Occasionally, you’ll come across someone who is very displeased with something that has happened, but they haven’t reached out to anyone to say that they are unhappy,” French said. Heyeck said he would like to see improvements and growth in Uptown and private reinvestment on South

State Street. “Uptown is fantastic. It is the center of our city; it is the heart of our city,” Heyeck said. “But the Uptown is basically State Street, and there is a lot that can be done a block or two on both sides of State Street.” Jenkins said he’s eager to see construction of a hotel and conference center that have been in city plans
